Good morning
johno-2113 September 2006
I saw Ohayo at the 2006 Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films and it is a charming offering from Japanese director/cinematographer/producer and editor Shinya Okada. Miko Fukai and Chie Kinoshita co-star as a young married couple whose spark has gone out of their loveless marriage. They live in a cramped small apartment but sleep in separate bedrooms and go off in the day to work at their separate jobs. The only thing they do together is share and prepare meals. They are culinary artists in their kitchen but eat their meals in silence. Strange things start happening around the house. Shoes that are missing turn up. Items in the kitchen appear ready for use before they have to search the cupboards for them. This strange ghost-like force has some interesting consequences on their marriage. Amazing camera work by Okada as he takes the camera on twists and turns throughout the small cramped set. Satomi Ohyama narrates the relatively dialog-free film. Good music here too. Ohayo means good morning. I would give this an 8.5 out of 10.
