You know what they say about basketball: Come for the sport, stay for the kiss cam.
At the final NBA playoff game between the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets Thursday night at Houston’s Toyota Center, one pair of Rockets fans got a little more than they bargained for when they were put on the infamous kiss cam during a break from play.
The woman immediately started laughing upon seeing herself and her pal featured on screen, as the fitting “What I Like About You” by The Romantics played.

Considering that Salmon Fishing in the Yemen stars Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt, wouldn’t it be stranger if it didn’t get picked up? Well, it’s found a home with CBS Films, as THR tells us that the company has acquired the Lasse Halström comedy for distribution — and at a hefty price of $4-to-5 million. After premiering last night to mixed reviews, a bidding war started over the film that centers on a fish scientist asked by an Arab Sheik “to do the seemingly impossible – introduce British salmon to the wadis of the Yemen.”
Based on the novel by Paul Torday, it’s scripted by Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire writer Simon Beaufoy. It sounds like a wholly inoffensive (if concurrently forgettable) affair, but the cast has me interested enough, so I think I’ll be willing to check the film out whenever it hits.

Paths Of Glory (Criterion) Stanley Kubrick’s 1957 antiwar classic put him on the map as a major filmmaker. Kirk Douglas stars in a true story about a French officer in Ww I who locks horns with the military’s top brass after his men are court-martialed for failing to carry out an obvious suicide mission. A perfect film, across the board, with fine support from George Macready as one of the most despicable martinet’s ever captured on film, Ralph Meeker, and Adolphe Menjou, all oily charm as a conniving General. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Audio commentary by critic Gary Giddins; Excerpt from 1966 audio interview with Kubrick; 1979 interview with Douglas; New interviews with Jan Harlan, Christiane Kubrick, and producer James B. Harris; French television documentary on real-life case which inspired the film; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 1.0 mono.

Fern Champion on Cameron DiazWe were working at New Line, casting 1994's "The Mask." The story that everybody knows now is that Anna Nicole Smith was the first choice because the men at New Line thought she was stunning. Didn't say she could walk and talk, but she was stunning. We needed someone to talk. The good news is Anna Nicole opted to do "Naked Gun 33 1/3." Oh, too bad. So Fern's back to the drawing board. I'm at my wit's end, because we had gone through all the top models and all the top actors, and nobody was pleasing New Line co-ceo Bob Shaye, executive producer Mike De Luca, and director and executive producer Chuck Russell.I called my girlfriend at the talent agency upstairs at the New Line building, and I said, "Is there anybody we haven't seen?" She said, "I have to tell you something: There's one gal; she hasn't done any acting.

As the San Francisco Independent Film Festival drew to a close yesterday, it bowed out with a final night time showing of Deadgirl, a controversial picture that challenges the audience's idea of sex and the coming-of-age. It's a nice bookmark to its opening night film, Somers Town, which is also about two teenage boys and a girl, but is at the opposite end of the spectrum. In between, we have films that are either full of life or apologetically cynical, completing a journey from the sweet to the depraved.
Here's a recap of the interesting independent films we had the chance to see.
