This left me wanting to see more.

"CBS Summer Playhouse" was a dumping ground for various television pilots that were never picked up by the network. I assumed they wanted to recuperate some of the cost to make the shows and, perhaps, they also wanted to see if the public had any interest in any of them once they showed them. One of the shows featured was "Whattley by the Bay"...a show that I was surprised at, as I liked it.

The show is about a workaholic day who is raising his scaredy-cat son. They decide to visit the father's hometown, Whattley, There, the father continues to be pulled by his job...and he scarcely has any time to relax. As for the boy, he loves the place. The show ends with them returning to New York...with the assumption that had it been made a series they would have, sooner or later, returned to Whattley to live.

I was surprised by this one. I've seen many of the pilots featured on "CBS Summer Playhouse" and nearly all of them were sitcoms. "Whattley by the Bay", in contrast, was more a family slice of life show...and one that seemed to have promise and was enjoyable. Too bad they didn't give this one a better try.
