The rise of Gollum: His first kill

The original Spider-Man films could’ve changed the career of one Yellowstone star but he chose to turn down the offer. Tobey Maguire’s Spidey role was reportedly first offered to Wes Bentley, who now plays the despicable Jamie Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama. Bentley revealed that he rejected the offer since the comic book movies were not performing well at the time, especially with the two subpar Batman movies from Joel Schumacher.
Wes Bentley opened up about his Yellowstone role and the role that he missed out on
Before he turned down the Spider-Man role, Bentley became a promising young star with his role as Ricky Fitts in American Beauty. Bentley went on to star in other movies like The Hunger Games, Interstellar, and Mission: Impossible 6.

This year’s races for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress were over before they started. Robert Downey Jr. in “Oppenheimer” and Da’Vine Joy Randolph in “The Holdovers” took leads in the Gold Derby odds in their respective categories early in the season. They both went on to pick up Golden Globe, Critics Choice, BAFTA and SAG Awards. By the time the Oscars rolled around, there was a “near zero” chance of either of them losing.
In contrast, the lead acting contests provided considerably more suspense. Bradley Cooper in “Maestro,” Paul Giamatti in “The Holdovers” and Cillian Murphy in “Oppenheimer” were all looking strong at different point in the derby, before Murphy really exploded and ultimately won the Best Actor Oscar. And Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Emma Stone in “Poor Things” kept trading the top spot in the Best Actress odds. Gladstone finally reclaimed...

Since the Academy Awards were first handed out in 1929, only 23 Oscars have been awarded to performances given by Black actresses and actors. Hattie McDaniel made history for Black performers by winning for “Gone With the Wind” (supporting in 1939), while Sidney Poitier was the first male actor to prevail for “Lilies of the Field” (lead in 1963). Denzel Washington became the first two-time Black acting champion when he claimed victory for “Glory” (supporting in 1989) and “Training Day” (lead in 2001), with Mahershala Ali joining him years later for “Moonlight” (supporting in 2016) and “Green Book” (supporting in 2018). Halle Berry was the first, and so far only, Black Best Actress thanks to “Monster’s Ball” (2001). The acting category with the most Black winners is Best Supporting Actress, with 10 including recent champ Da’Vine Joy Randolph for “The Holdovers” (2023). Da’Vine Joy Randolph (‘The Holdovers’) becomes 10th Black woman to win Best Supporting Actress Oscar
Just as Gold Derby predicted, Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) has prevailed at the 2024 Oscars in the category of Best Supporting Actress. Earlier this awards season, the 37-year-old performer claimed victory at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, BAFTA and SAG Awards for her role as bereaved cafeteria worker Mary Lamb in Alexander Payne‘s comedy-drama film. This marks Randolph’s first career Oscars win on her first-ever nomination.

In the 95 years that they’ve been handing out Academy Awards, just 10 African-American actresses have won dating back to Hattie McDaniel’s famed supporting actress triumph for “Gone with the Wind” in 1940. Nine of those wins have come in Best Supporting Actress, with Halle Berry being the lone victor in Best Lead Actress for “Monster’s Ball” in 2002. Berry has expressed disappointment that no other Black winner has followed in her footsteps over the past two decades. But the truth is that while it was 51 years between McDaniel’s win and the second for Whoopi Goldberg in “Ghost” in 1991, things have improved significantly over the past few decades for African American actresses and actors in terms of winning at the Oscars in the supporting categories in particular.
This year, there are five opportunities for Black performers to take home an acting trophy spread across three categories: Colman Domingo (“Rustin”) and Jeffrey Wright...

Actress Mo’Nique claimed she has been “blackballed” from the entertainment industry by Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey – and she said she has an audio tape of Perry stating she is “difficult to work with.”
In an interview with football legend Shannon Sharpe on his podcast Club Shay Shay, Mo’Nique reveals she recorded a conversation over the phone between herself and Perry.
After the recorded phone call, Mo’Nique stated that Perry told singer Stephanie Mills he would only meet with Mo’Nique if her husband, Sidney Hicks, was not present. Perry requested a public apology from Mo’Nique and said that he and Oprah had nothing to do with the downfall of her career.
The drama between Mo’Nique, Perry and Winfrey dates back to 2009.

Mo’Nique delivered a viral interview on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast that garnered nearly five million views in 24 hours due to the Oscar-winning comedian’s blunt comments while talking about previous public spats with the likes of Tyler Perry, Netflix, Oprah Winfrey and more. In one of the podcast’s most quoted moments, Mo’Nique declared that her career might’ve been as successful as that of fellow comic Melissa McCarthy had she been given equal opportunities as her white contemporaries.
“If I was a white woman, do you know what my name would be? Melissa McCarthy,” Mo’Nique told host Shannon Sharpe. “If I was a white woman, my name would be Melissa McCarthy. Same track record! Five-year sitcom in syndication. The opportunities are not the same.”
McCarthy starred on the CBS sitcom “Mike and Molly” for six seasons and won an Emmy for outstanding actress in a comedy series.

BAFTA threw up plenty of surprises and snobs in their nominations lineups this year with Best Actress one of the most intriguing and head-scratching categories of the year. “Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone was snubbed while Annette Bening (“Nyad”) also didn’t make the cut. Both of those performers were nominated at the Oscars, however.
Instead, the BAFTA nominees for Best Actress are Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Margot Robbie (“Barbie”), Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), and Vivian Oparah (“Rye Lane”). Stone is the obvious frontrunner and the thespian at the top of our BAFTA odds chart for this category but one name in that list sticks out as a potential challenger: Oparah.
The British actress had a breakout year in 2023 with her role in Searchlight Pictures/Disney’s charming”Rye Lane,” which follows Oparah (Yas) and David Jonsson...

“I definitely felt a responsibility,” admits Lenny Kravitz of being tasked with ending the film “Rustin” with an original song. The Netlix movie follows the unsung story of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin (Colman Domingo) as he orchestrates the infamous 1963 March on Washington. Through conversations with Domingo and director George C. Wolfe, and a period of quiet reflection, Kravitz turned out the inspiring song “Road to Freedom” which soars through the end credits. It recently earned the artist a Golden Globe nomination. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The rock and roll icon sums up his songwriting process as “getting quiet.” “I waited for a couple days after I got the phone call because I don’t like to sit down. I prefer to wait to hear something that’s being transmitted. I’m just an antenna. That’s what my job is, to pick up what’s to be given,...

With George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin” out in limited release on Friday, Netflix has debuted an original song by Lenny Kravitz that plays over the film’s credits.
Called “Road to Freedom,” the track finds Kravitz backed by a “glowing choir,” according to a Netflix press release. The four-time Grammy winner is not just the singer of “Road to Freedom” but he also plays “drums, bass, piano, Hammond B-3, and tambourine.” The song also “features a guest appearance by fellow Grammy winner Trombone Shorty and longtime Kravitz collaborator and guitarist Craig Ross.”
Kravitz has never been nominated for an Academy Award in his lengthy career (he does have two Screen Actors Guild Award nominations as an ensemble member of “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and “Precious”).

Exclusive: Cord Jefferson’s feature directorial debut American Fiction is changing up its release plan, shifting from a November 3 limited opening to December 15.
The MGM/MRC theatrical release, which stars Jeffrey Wright, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, Tracee Ellis Ross and Skyler Wright and just won the Toronto Film Festival’s People Choice Award for the fest’s top film, is a scathing satire on the publishing industry and its treatment of serious works by Black writers. One of those writers is Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Wright). He travels back to his hometown of Boston to attend a book festival, but the turnout is low in favor of another book seminar with author Sintara Golden’s (Issa Rae) bestseller We Lives in Da Ghetto.
Originally, MGM planned to expand American Fiction on November 10 and November 17. Now following a mid-December release, an expansion is planned for December 22. Given the pic’s response...

In Cord Jefferson’s idea-dense “American Fiction,” no one wants to publish literary professor Thelonious Ellison’s latest novel. Thelonious — or “Monk” to his friends — has delivered a modern reworking of Aeschylus’ “The Persians” (hardly bestseller material to begin with), but all the industry can see is the color of his skin. The editors compliment his prose, but want to know what this manuscript “has to do with the Black experience.” In frustration, he dashes off a parody of the thug-life trauma porn the world seems to want, submits it to his agent, and suddenly, he’s the “man of the hour.”
If that sounds like the setup for a lit-world “Bamboozled,” then you might be surprised by how even-tempered the film feels. First published in 2001 (the year after Spike Lee’s confrontational satire came out), Percival Everett’s novel “Erasure” had fangs. Jefferson files them down — not necessarily a bad thing,...

Animated flicks don’t get the justice they deserve when it comes to the Academy Awards. So often, animated movies are some of the most original, memorable, and well-told stories of the entire year yet they are, more often than not, confined to the category of Best Animated Picture.
“Snow White and the Seven Dwarves,” “Fantasia,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “The Lion King,” “Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo,” “Wall-e,” “Shrek,” and last year’s Best Animated Picture winner, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” are just a handful of all-time classic movies that aren’t great animated movies, they are great movies period. Despite this, however, we have only had three animated movies in Oscars history that have been nominated for Best Picture.

American Horror Stories, a streaming series spin-off from FX’s long-running horror anthology series American Horror Story, began with a seven episode first season in 2021, and an eight episode second season followed in 2022. Both of those seasons had July premiere dates, but obviously that wasn’t the case for season 3. Instead, all four episodes of American Horror Stories season 3 are set to drop on the Hulu streaming service on October 26th, and its premiere is being promoted as a special Halloween event. Actually, they’re calling it a “Huluween event”.
Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck, the same duo that’s responsible for American Horror Story, this series is a weekly hourlong anthology that features a different horror story, some of which call back to the original series, in each contained episode. Obviously the “weekly” part of that description is being set aside for the new season.

Editor’s note: Jesse Andrews is author of the novel Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, which is one of five books pulled from the library shelves of high schools within the purview of Tallahassee, Florida-based Leon County Schools superintendent Rock Hanna, after the Leon County chapter of the conservative group Moms for Liberty petitioned the schools to remove the book because of the frank depiction of sex and gender identity issues. The others include Push, the Sapphire-penned book that inspired the film Precious; Doomed by Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk; Lucky by Alice Sebold; and Dead End by Jason Meyer. Still being scrutinized is an autobiography of tennis great Billie Jean King, because it discusses her sexuality. This has been an ongoing theme precipitated by policies passed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and legislative Republicans. DeSantis is running for president and probably figured to ride his brawl with Disney into the White House,...

Lisa Rinna is best known for playing the characters of Billie Reed on Days of Our Lives and Taylor McBride on Melrose Place… or at least she was, until she was featured on eight seasons of the reality series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. That may be what most viewers recognize her from these days. But Rinna recently left that Real Housewives show, and now Deadline reports that she has signed on to appear in an episode of the Hulu horror anthology series American Horror Stories.
The episode Rinna will be in is titled Tapeworm, and most of the filming of that episode was already completed before Deadline confirmed her involvement. That’s the only information that’s available at this time.

Mo'Nique is finally ready to put the past behind her, and by that she means her 13-year feud with Lee Daniels. In the midst of her return to TV, movies, and standup comedy, the comedian sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, published on March 8, to recap the years of her career after she won her 2010 Oscar for Daniels's "Precious" - a movie that also led to their public fallout.
It all started in 2009 in the run-up to Mo'Nique's big night at the Oscars, when, according to the comedian, she refused to do full-court press for "Precious" because she wouldn't be compensated to promote it during award season, per THR. At the time, Mo'Nique was hosting a talk show on BET and also wanted time to spend with her husband (and manager), Sidney Hicks, and her sons Shalon, 32, and twins Jonathan and David, 17. With Will Smith banned from attending the 94th Academy Awards after slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 ceremony, all eyes were on who the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would select to present this year’s best actress category. The honor went to Halle Berry, a best actress Oscar winner herself for “Monster’s Ball.” Berry and Jessica Chastain jointly presented the best actor and best actress categories.
Chastain won best actress last year for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” Last year’s winners for best supporting actor and actress, Troy Kotsur (“Coda”) and Ariana Debose (“West Side Story”), presented this year’s supporting actor prize to Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and this year’s supporting actress prize to Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All at Once.”) Smith was the only 2022 acting Oscar winner not to present a category in 2023.

Actress Mo’Nique has opened up about an argument with Oprah Winfrey over a 2010 episode on her talk show that involved her estranged family members.
After her Oscar win that year, Winfrey told Mo’Nique that her brother wanted to be on the show to “let her know how parents can watch out for predators,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
Mo’Nique’s brother had previously admitted to molesting her when she was seven and he was 13.
Mo’Nique said it was fine for her brother to make an appearance, but she was “horrified” to see her parents and another brother, who largely ignored the abuse, on the show.
Before the episode aired, she tried to get ahold of Winfrey to say that she wasn’t on speaking terms with her mother and that her family was only there for the money. She reached out to several people but could never get in contact with Winfrey.

Something could happen at the 95th Academy Awards that has never happened before: a remake of a Best Picture champion could win Best Picture. The movie in question is “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which initially won the coveted Oscar prize for 1930 and is now a hot contender to be named the best film of 2022. The Netflix remake, directed by Edward Berger, earned nine total bids this year: picture, adapted screenplay, international film, score, sound, production design, cinematography, makeup & hairstyling and visual effects. If it wins Best Picture on Sunday, March 12, 2023, it will become the 17th war movie to prevail.

Mo’Nique is opening up about her high-profile feuds. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 55-year-old comedian discusses both the origins and current standings of her public feuds with Lee Daniels, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry.
Everything started in 2004 when she met Daniels. The following year, she appeared in his directorial debut, “Shadowboxer”. From there, Mo’Nique says, she and Daniels “never stopped communicating,” all the way up to her starring role in the 2009 film “Precious”.
The film quickly earned critical praise and was part of the awards season discussion, something that Daniels, along with producers Winfrey and Perry, wanted to capitalize on. Mo’Nique declined to go on a press tour without being compensated for her time, and thus the rift began.
