We open on a shot of Spacely Sprockets with a narrator identifying the building as "Spacely Sprockets." Thank you, narrator, but I can read. He goes on to talk about the long-lasting combative competition between Spacely and his rival, Cogswell of Cogswell Cogs, located next door. An on-going battle that included plots of driving one another out of business, but this time Spacely was determined to have the upper hand. He had recently acquired a state of the art machine known as the minavac, working on compressing objects of large matter and reducing them in size to expedite shipping and then to enlarge, or decompress, upon arrival at their destination. Spacely was all ready to test the machine out in front of Cogswell to make him cower in defeat, but something goes wrong while George attempts to fix the machine and instantly he's reduced to six inches. Cogswell witnesses, but doesn't cower in defeat, he laughs his fanny off and leaves. Worse yet, the minavac can't enlarge George because the enlarging unit is broken. It needs, of all things, a cog. This would not be a problem, had Mr. Cogswell not stopped all trading with Spacely, so getting a cog was out of the question. Spacely sends George home while he ponders a solution to their small, king-sized problem.
The family gets the shock of their lives when a tiny George comes home. Immediately he finds himself to be a misfit in his own house. He gets sat on by Astro, has trouble juggling his turkey leg (I thought they ate pills), and can't even drink of glass of milk without spilling the entire glass all over himself. Soon he gets a call from Spacely, and hopes it's good news. It isn't, but nor is it bad news. It's more along the lines of bittersweet. Spacely tells George that he has to sneak into Cogswell Cogs and steal a cog. Simple, right? Especially for a six inch tall man, correct? Let's hope so. Next morning, after falling several feet out of bed and taking a shower in the sink, George goes to Cogswell Cogs and creeps passed the inept guards and procures a cog. Suddenly, a giant, menacing Mr. Cogswell catches him and attempts to swat him like a bug. He traps him under a glass and holds him in the palm of his hand. Big mistake. See, George just happened to have a rather large pin with him, so he escapes Cogswell's greasy palm and gets the cog safely back to Spacely's, and is once again enlarged to his normal size. But Cogswell won't give up that easily. He disguises himself as a Viennese repairman and comes to "fix" the minavac, only Spacely can see through his disguise and then both men engage in a round of fisticuffs, standing right in front of the minavac, and as George watches, accidentally presses the reducing button, dragging the men through the machine and reducing them to six inches. Karma then kicks in as the minavac blows a fuse and it will take over a week for a new one to be delivered. So until then, Spacely and Cogswell decide to try beating themselves at cards *with* cards. So all was well again. Jane is happy to have a big husband again, Elroy and Judy are happy to have a father to look up to, and Astro delights in teasing George over his experience.
Pretty interesting episode. In my opinion, I always thought the least sinister of the two gear heads was Cogswell. If I were George, I'd go work for him instead since he seems a bit more easy going than Spacely. Mr. Spacely is just downright nasty. "The Little Man" is a good episode, but be prepared for slurs of bad size-related puns.
