So funny.

Tim is a very nice and very boring person and only bad things happen to him. His reactions to other people is my favorite part. They will say something crazy and he stays calm and says something hilarious. Love it.

This is just funny
Horror-yo10 August 2020
It doesn't take itself seriously at all, and never comes across as self-indulgent or forcing humor onto the viewer. It's easy comedy, not in the sense that no effort was put into it, but rather that even on your worst day, coming home after exhausting work, you'd still find enthusiasm for a quick episode. It's smooth viewing, funny and intelligible, and the story makes sense and is consistently straightforward yet fresh. The plots are funny and offer enough variety, but it's the specific situations in each episode that are at times hilarious. Tim is just doing his best not to be singled out, not to be noticed, and he somehow finds himself in the spotlight in the worst possible way every time.

One of the funniest moments I can remember is the very first scene and Dildarian (creator and voice of Tim) really did an excellent job capturing what the show was about in that opening scene to get the audience hooked. Other moments include any time some super exaggerated story is made up of Tim that makes him look like a miserable little creature, any scene involving Tim and his girlfriend Amy's family (the best by far being his phone call with the mom about the cook book), usually any moment involving the Boss and just the mere fact he's simply known as "the Boss", when he pretends he's got 'tell the truth' syndrome and verbally assaults everyone in the office under orders from the boss, most of the scenes with the priest...

The ridiculous, crummy animation is absolutely perfect given the type of humor in question, and you can tell Dildarian had fun with just the animation alone in certain scenes, for eg when Tim's on the bus and the old man challenges him to a boxing match and repeatedly slaps him in the face, and the scene lasts about 5 or 6 slaps too long on purpose. It's so underwhelming and flat it's hilarious to watch.

The animation is arguably symbolic of how exactly underwhelming and ordinary life is. How unimpressive, and flat (literally as flat as a child's 2D drawings) life is.

Funny show Warning: Spoilers
"The Life & Times of Tim," created by Steve Dildarian, is another show about a twenty-something New Yorker working at a monolithic corporation and just trying to get by without totally embarrassing himself.

Except this show is totally hilarious.

"Tim" is sort of like an animated version of those "The Most Awkward Boy in the World" comedy sketches (starring Zach Woods, now of "The Office" fame)... somehow, no matter what Tim does (or doesn't do), it's gonna get pretty uncomfortable. And incredibly funny. Just in the first season Tim somehow gets cornered into fighting an old man, and taking his boss's daughter to her senior prom.

The animation is a little... simple, like something you might come across on Newgrounds, but don't let that dissuade you. This is a cartoon in which the characters wear different outfits (but still have a consistent wardrobe/style), and one that has many little background details never mentioned, but that are sincerely pause-worthy, such as little posters and reminders hung up on the cubicles at Tim's work, or a sign on the wall of an AA meeting - a picture of a person "losing their lunch" in a toilet, with the caption, "You Need Help." There is also continuity between episodes, recurring characters, notable guest stars (Tony Hale, Trevor Moore, Lizzy Caplan, Cheri Oteri, Jeff Garlin, Bob Saget...), references to Wes Anderson and "Felicity," and many, many hilarious jokes.

"Tim" could be criticized for its use of vulgar situations (and language), but none of it is used gratuitously, or without creativity and originality. Vulgar? Yes. Tasteless, lewd, or uncouth? Hell no. A prime example is an alcoholic priest, a recurring character, and in the age of parish sex scandals, a skewed version of a new kind of archetype. Yet "Tim" does not use this character as a chance for a cheap shot at religious institutions. No, the priest's "wild" antics instead just lead to more opportunities for Tim to have to deal with awkwardness and embarrassment - what the show is about.

The Best New Show on TV
AnnaKarenin2 November 2008
I know that cartoons aimed towards adults generally don't get the attention they deserve, because they get written off as childish or don't capture interests as quickly as attractive/famous real-life characters can. But PLEASE, give this show a chance! I promise that just one episode of this show will have you hooked. I haven't laughed out loud this much since arrested development (R.I.P.) and the humor is similarly fast paced and, at times, absurd. The show is a half hour long, divided into two 15 minute episodes, which makes the show very watchable even for people who don't think they can devote an entire 30 minutes to a cartoon.

Everything about this show is hilarious--the scenarios, the dry dialogue, the buildup to inevitable madness, and the horribly drawn but wonderfully fleshed-out characters. The show follows Tim, who is frequently caught in admittedly outlandish situations, although they always seem to spiral out of control so realistically. He and the supporting cast of characters all have their own stand out performances, including Debbie the friend/hooker and Amy the girlfriend, who is perpetually disappointed in her well-meaning but just plain awful boyfriend. So before you write it off simply because it's an adult cartoon, watch just ONE episode. Hell, even watch one half of an episode. That's 15 minutes of your time that will quickly lead to you watching every episode, I promise.

Absolutely brilliant!!
waltschick19 March 2011
The only reason I even signed up and got a user profile on IMDb was so I could spread the word about this show. It is truly one of the funniest and most entertaining shows I've ever seen. WATCH IT!! Not only is it extremely funny, but the story line sucks you in. Each show consists of two fifteen minute segments and within a 30 seconds, the story completely draws you in. My wife said that the show is akin to an animated version of Curb Your Enthusiasm and she's right! The voices fit the characters perfectly and each charter is developed in a very believable way. I can't recommend this show enough!! Check it out! As far as animated shows, it blows South Park and Family Guy out of the water.

Fantastic new animation - An unseen gem - one watch and you're hooked!
jaykhunter20 November 2008
The Life and Times of Tim features just that; the day-to-day life of an ordinary 25 year old New Yorker, trying to talk his way out of horribly embarrassing situations. Tim really has the worst luck, and his dry, dead-pan excuses are the centre piece of this show.

I urge you to watch just one story (there are two per episode) as you'll be hooked. The writing is very good. It's a little surreal how things could go so badly but it lends to hilarious situations and dialogue.

Give it a chance, like Arrested Development, it won't be appreciated en masse during it's run.

With so many animations that are faltering in great humour (I rarely laugh out loud the Simpsons, Family Guy or American Dad any more - South Park still does the business from time to time) This show had me laughing really hard a few times per episode.

I've gotten everyone I've shown "Tim" to into the show, which is actually saying a lot. I really hope it gets a second season at least.

Enjoy watching!

"I'm not the back door guy."
chumpsteak29 April 2012
3 series & still nobody has ever heard of The Life & Times of Tim. It's not even released on DVD in the UK. If you want it you'll have to get it on import.

The humour is similar to Curb Your Enthusiasm with Tim getting into difficult situations (not always his fault) and then making them worse as each episode progresses. It's dry & understated, even when the situations become crazy. The characters are all brilliant, even minor ones such as Helen, Debbie or Stu's Dad. Tim's friends Rodney & Stu are idiots who invariably land him in trouble while keeping out of it themselves.

If you like adult cartoons, check it out.

I haven't laughed so hard at a Show for a while.
finnlife112 June 2013
So in Australia SBS is the channel with weird-as sit on late at night, IE; A cartoon about a lady bus-driver who sucks every passengers...yeah.

Anyway I was bored, it was 11:30 at night, and this show came on, I watched from the beginning, the show looked shaky at best, less than a minute in I was chuckling, it then turned into non-stop laughs for me, by the time I had recovered from one hilarious section, another hit me, I couldn't stop laughing, it was hilarious, the combination of terrible situations combined with dry humor/sarcasm at the ridiculousness of the situation makes this a great combination. It's like when your friend crashes his car, get's out and says "Well this is good."

10/10 Very dry, very original, very funny.

Awkward Funny
mailliwkooh10 March 2010
This show is different, thats for sure. It lacks the slap stick humor your used to when watching a cartoon. And you have to actually watch the show to understand it. Typical cartoons jump from scene to scene without really relating to one another. Don't turn it on in the middle of the show and expect to enjoy it like you would a Family Guy because you will have no idea what Tim is talking about. Its on HBO and it is only 30 min long with two 15 min sketches, so it's easy to miss a lot. So do yourself a favor and watch it from the start.

Tim always seems to find himself in awkward scenarios. Usually because he puts his foot in his mouth. He has good intentions and is a smart guy but is always surrounded by stupid people who misinterpret him.

Don't expect too much from this show visually. The art looks like it came straight out of a comic strip. I won't say this show is for smart people, but it definitely calls for a different type of sense of humor. It's no Simpsons, but it's not trying to be.

One of the Best (Adult) Animated Shows Out There

Each thirty-minute episode consists of two fifteen-minute segments.

The second season, currently airing on HBO, has a snazzy new opening-sequence, but is not lacking in any of the goodness mentioned above.

Predecessor to Ten-Year-Old Tom
SureCommaNot19 October 2022
The showrunners really found their rhythm with Ten-Year-Old Tom, which I'd rate at probably a 7 (not a must-watch, but still entertaining).

The predecessor is much more predictable. The falling action, for most episodes I've seen of the show, is basically the same thing over and over: Tim listens to other people, as they tell him to do stupid things, and even though those people don't know each other, they pretty much all take the same approach: convincing him to do the thing by spinning it into some sort of positive, usually concerned only with appearances.

If you like cringe comedy about a pushover character, you might still be annoyed by how repetitive this one is. Ten-Year-Old Tom might be more up your alley.

Great Funny Series
Erik-Movie-Reviews17 April 2021
This is one of the funniest shows on TV. It is amazing this Series creator has not gone on to bigger and better things. The writing is great, the delivery is great, and there are a lot of laughs in every episode.

This Series ended too soon. I hope he makes another series!

I Warmed Up to It
steven-brumley15 December 2008
I like the show.

It's humor is dry but that kind of humor matches my own.

It took a couple of episodes for me to get warmed up to it, but after that I really like it. I think it is my new favorite show.

The problem is, nobody that I know of has heard of the show. So, HBO needs to find someway to get the word out.

I am surprised that there is not more action on IMDb about the show. That goes back to the problem of letting people know that it exists. I think I am going to have to find out what the ratings are on the show. It would be interesting to find out.

If I could watch one show for the rest of my life...
potejd7 July 2019
Tim combines the awkward humor of The Office and Curb Your Enthusiasm. In fact, many voice actors have appeared on those shows, and Curb's most famous episode, "The Palestinian Chicken," appears to have been inspired by the Tim episode "Personality Disorder." It's the kind of show that will improve your sense of humor. Unfortunately, not too many people know about it b/c it currently isn't on HBOGO, and they didn't advertise for it very much when it was running. But anyone I introduced the show to now worships it. There's definitely a cult following.

I can't quite explain why it's good either.
GiraffeDoor28 March 2023
Sometimes it's just curious way some things just work.

The minimalist approach here makes the whole thing breezy and digestible and also more adorable.

The scenarios are genuinely creative and the mixture of live wire characters juxtaposed against smaller than life, Tim, made each episode pretty appealing.

Tim is refreshing as a character. He can be self absorbed and unfastidious perhaps but he is just trying to get by. Life for him isn't something he takes seriously enough to get passionate about but he has to contend with everyone else's issues. If everyone were life Tim we'd probably have no wars but if only some people are life Tim, everyone else would get angry enough to start them.

A dark show, really. I'm usually very averse to shows that think they can just end an episode negatively and call that comedy but I still got a lot out of this.

I don't like the ending of the whole thing but it's the journey not the destination.

One of the best cartoons for adults that's not a Seth MacFarlane show.
bramb60021 February 2010
I love shows with simple concepts. The show is carried by Tim, an ordinary 25 year old New Yorker who works in an office. He has the worst luck. Tim is always getting caught in horribly embarrassing and incriminating situations, that are the centre of the show. I would compare it to Curb Your Enthusiasm in the way that it brilliantly sets up it's scenarios, the build-up and the over-the-top conclusions.

This show is animated and usually people wouldn't be interested in watching new ones, fearful that it's another Seth MacFarlane show or a show that's trying to mimic the style of a MacFarlane show. The Life and Times of Tim is an adult cartoon that Seth MacFarlane has no involvement in. If Family Guy pushes the envelope, Tim goes even further. This is HBO we're talking about here, they have nothing but quality, uncensored programing. This is no exception. It also happens to be HBO's first animated series since Spawn. This is the best animated series in the last 5 years.

The animation isn't amazing. In fact, it's pretty awful looking, but that works in it's favor. It's not a very fast paced show, some people may even find it boring. They could show you the most boring office cubicle on Television because of the drawing style.

Like I said the show certainly won't be for everyone. If you need to be constantly entertained with non-stop action in your cartoons, than this won't be for you. If you are patient, like you have to be to watch shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, you should give this a chance. The second season just started and you can be able to jump in without having any knowledge about the characters. It's a huge strength for a show to be able to watch the segments in a random order. It's only a half-hour show and each story is 15 minutes, so it's not a huge commitment.

J.D. Seaton is a moron...
allhellblimey3 February 2012
Hi, I signed up for IMDb just so I could point out what an idiot j.d. seaton is. Let's see, for starters I imagine him as some bloated half-wit who drinks ten energy drinks a day and doesn't ever shut up his overly loud and abrasive voice and when he tries to be funny he laughs at his own jokes really loud because of his extreme insecurity as someone who isn't considered funny by anyone except the broiest of bros.

With that said, the only thing wrong with The Life and Times of Tim is that there aren't literally thousands of episodes. That's not to say the episodes don't have replay value, but really I wish I could watch new Tim material all day every day. I try to be more like Tim in every aspect of my life and I wish I could be a character on the show.

Underrated comedy; Hilarious
TheWhiteLodge7 April 2012
'The Life & Times of Tim' is an original, excruciatingly funny and all-round well executed show, not to mention painfully overlooked. Created, written, directed by and starring Steve Dildarian as the voice of Tim, the series explores the trials and tribulations of a soft-spoken young man named Tim, who lives in a New York apartment with his girlfriend Amy and works an office job for a company called OmniCorp. Tim continually finds himself in extremely awkward social situations, most of the time against his will and of no wrong doing on his part.

The writing is fresh and the dialogue comes off very natural, the comedic timing and chemistry between characters is pitch perfect, the animation is simple but subtle and charming, the swearing/vulgarity is used thoughtfully and is never excessive (though later seasons are more heavy on the profanity, merely an observation, not a complaint), there are so many well-developed secondary characters such as The Boss, Stu, Rodney, Stan, Marie, Helen and The Priest, who have their own unique traits and quirks that make themselves memorable and play off of Tim so well, not to mention the numerable guest appearances including Bob Odenkirk, Aziz Ansari, Alfred Molina, Bob Saget, Jeff Garlin, JK Simmons, Elliott Gould, Philip Baker Hall, Tim Meadows, Fred Williard, Rob Heubel, Will Forte, Lizzy Caplan, Bob Einstein and many more.

'Tim' ranks for me among the best comedies, such as Peep Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Party Down, South Park, Arrested Development, The Office UK/Extras, Louie etc and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys these types of shows.

It's true that this type of humour is not for everyone (the best humour never is); it's dry, awkward and inappropriate but if you 'get' this then it is just non-stop hilarity for the whole episode, laughing until it hurts. HBO has something special here and I really hope they hang on to this gem. I cannot recommend this show enough.

Two month-later edit: So yeah, of course HBO cancelled it, again. RIP 'The Life & Times of Tim', here's to hoping it comes back in some form or another.

Funny as hell!!!!
sum-rocks3 February 2012
When i first started watching this show i started at the beginning of the 3rd season and i was kind of lost. Why is that you might ask? Well it's because on top of all the hilarious situations that Tim gets himself into they all tie together into a great story. I believe the terrible animation actually adds to the humour of the show. Honestly though when a show is this funny i could care less about a story line but since they included it it is a fantastic compliment to a hilarious show. If you are age 16-30 i would highly recommend this to you (although women might not like the humour used in this show) and i pray that this show does not get cancelled cause I NEED MORE LIFE AND TIMES OF TIM!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best animated show you have never seen!
DacMeDarco22 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Slipping under the radar over the course of its three season run, The Life and Times of Tim never gained the attention many feel it deserves. Its sitcom setup and plot structure lend perfectly to the shows dry humour. Despite being fully animated, the show does not tend to stretch the boundaries of realism. It instead uses its animation helps to distance it from other animated shows and even live-action sitcoms. The show is perhaps able to be viewed as the animated counterpart of fellow HBO show Curb Your Enthusiasm.

The creation of the show was handled by Steve Dildarian, who also provides the voice for the titular character. Tim's friend Stu is voiced by Nick Kroll (The League, Kroll Show), who portrays the simpleton character with ease. The show also boasts some well-known guest stars over its duration. Included guest voices are Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul), Elliott Gould (M*A*S*H, Friends), Aziz Ansari (Masters of None, Parks and Recreation) and Billy Dee Williams (Star Wars Episodes IV-VI, Batman (1989)).

Although the show is not entirely ground breaking, it does have enough comedic substance to entertain viewers and even bring it above many other similar shows, especially animated. The writing helps provide an unconventional dialogue along with its dry and subtle humour. The humour of the show is perhaps the reason behind why it never achieved the mainstream popularity that it so well deserves.

All factors of the show work well with each other and culminate to become a fantastic and fun show, provided you can handle the rough and rigid animation. While it may bore some viewers and throw them off, it is all round a fantastic show with great jokes, albeit very dry. It is at least worth a watch to test the waters, the first episode or two would provide a necessary base of what to expect throughout the series.
