Bus, train, plane. . . Car

I'm one of those fans who like to watch the planning more than the actual trip because getting ready is relatable. There's something about planning a trip shows a lot of funny stuff.

Fun Episode but Boy is Fred Cheap
mrogers18 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed the episode as it had a lot of classic moments. Deciding how to get to Hollywood was one of the biggest starting gags. With Lucy wanting to fly, then take a train, then the bus only to decide to buy a car as Ricky has to keep calling to make reservations all the while. Fun starting moment that set up the silliness of the episode right off the bat.

Then when we get to the moments inviting Fred and Ethel to come along with them in the car and this has mixed reactions for me and others. Ricky and Lucy want to see the country via car as they will be able to stop off where they want on the way from NY to California. This is great of course but they realize they have an empty back seat. Let's invite the Mertz's along. Well then the situation gets weird. And I wonder how this would all play in real life if someone was offering two friends to go along in their car for a week long roadtrip. Ricky is excited to have them along and realizes they can help with expenses like gas.. and then cheap Fred blows a gasket. And I'm not sure if this reaction is the right one.

Yes I realize Fred is as cheap as they come. But your best friend is offering you a trip across country and all you have to do is help chip in for some gas along the way? Sounds like a great deal and the right thing to do to me. What's worse is Fred and Ethel are about to storm out of the apartment all angry because they even suggested they pay for some of the gas along the trip. I didn't see it as wrong. If me and my family invited my best friends with me.. I would hope they would appreciate it and want to help with expenses since most of the rest I would help them with as I am inviting them. I just didn't like how this scene played out. It wasn't funny, it was a bit cringy to me. Fred is cheap yes, but he isn't broke. He could easily say "Yeah I'll help with expenses.. this is going to be a fun trip." instead it's all "The backseat is empty anyway." as a reaction. Just never liked how this scene came off. Yes Fred gets his later in the episode.

As we get to the part where they are getting the car, they leave it to Fred who says he can get a great deal on a Cadillac convertible. And of course he gets a car from the 30s that is falling apart and in horrible condition and smokes and coughs as he shows up. It's cool though that we get to see the outside of the apartment building here. This is the first time we get an outside view of their home. Sure it's weird with the painting backgrounds and all but a classic moment to see the home from outside on the street and the car situation is very funny. As it falls apart and gets worse as the situation goes on.

And the last moment with Lucy trying to con the guy Fred bought the car back from claiming they are looking for the exact car Fred is trying to return is a bit typical of the humor of the show. Amusing and obvious how it all ends up but still typical Lucy fare.

Fun episode and great to see the details of how their trip out to California played out. It was so much fun seeing the story lines as they developed in this season as we go from landing the role in the movie, to heading out to Hollywood, living in Hollywood and after almost a year there finally returning home. This is when I Love Lucy was really hitting on all cylinders. Fun episode. I just hate the Fred cheap moments. But again he got his when he gets conned into giving more money for the fake info of the Production Company that wanted the car.

Warning: Spoilers
Deciding which mode of transportation to take to California becomes problematic for the Ricardo's as Lucy keeps changing her mind on which one is better. Ricky however takes the blame something he said started this whole thing " I do "! Lucy isn't phased .

She decides they should go by car which they don't even own . It makes sense really. The Mertz's arrive and feeling down because they will miss the Ricardo's prompting Lucy to invite them. Fred had an idea for a car . He actually drives it back to the apartment building but when they all get in it for a ride it collapses! One of the funniest things I have ever seen! They keep trying to put it back together and something else falls off! They all send Fred back to the dealership to get the money back. Lucy tries to help Fred by calling the dealership and make a pitch for the car so Fred will get his money back. Sincere effort that doesn't go so well!

I Could Have Loaded It Better With A Pitchfork

That line is one of the best ever delivered by Vivian Vance's character Ethel! There was so much packed into this one episode that every time I see it I'm surprised all over again. "Oh, Mickey Richardson isn't going to be happy about this!"

Fred Is Cheap

This is a great episode, showing the Ricardos and Mertzes getting ready to make the cross-country drive from New York to Hollywood. The thing that always irritated me about this episode, though, is how cheap Fred is. He refuses to pay for half of the gas or even half of the car oil for the trip....yet he pays for his and Ethel's hotel for a month. It makes no sense. But then again, I guess that's television for you!
