Two weeks in a row where it's a masterpiece
raf-720593 June 2019
This episode is amazing, true raw talent in the voice acting department. It's gritty, sad, gut wrenching, and emotional all at once. It's something that needs to be recognized in the anime industry and something that this episode does perfectly. Seeing this adaptated in the anime leaves me shocked at how voice acting can make a scene 1000x better.

Beautiful composition
wasolop123 June 2019
Without divulging too much of the plot, I'll give a summary of what was so perfect about this episode.

There was a wonderful lack of fighting scenes this time round, yet tensions ran so much higher than ever. The lack of a soundtrack throughout the episode gave such an eerie setting you'd think someone was about to die (they do that a lot with this show). The production staff made a fantastic use of stills to summarise a plot point (see the very last scene) and still had some fantastically fluid animation to make sure you were always immersed and never taken away from the story.

The voice actors all did a very, very special job, even watching without subtitles I was able to tell what they were saying (bare in mind I don't understand Japanese) and I genuinely thought at several points that the VAs were put under physical pain to produce such terrifying and perfect sounds.

Hiroyuki Sawano was wonderful as always with his accompanying soundtrack, and did a great job rounding off the episode with the renaissance-like image at the end.

Very rushed review but I loved this episode, probably the best single piece of TV I've seen to date. 10/10

Nothing to say

It's perfect. Every plot. Every character. Every explanation. It's so tight and so well done that the only thing that I have to say is: masterpiece. Once more.

Storm between emotions and right decision.
ahmadyhadi3 June 2019
The voice acting here is god-tier , the scenario is twisted and satisfying , could get more complex from this plot and on.

What if I tell I can close my eyes and just listen to this voice acting as a podcast , would it be possible ? Yes , it delivered all emotions as it supposed to be.

Music here is another level , we are here talking about the the legend Sawano Hiroyuki , I'm speechless here.

Story : 10/10 Music: 10/10 Voice acting : infinity /10

Can't wait for the next episode to be released.!!

Amazing VA
liubao-934993 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is a little different in term of acting. The VA are great. I've no idea if someone will regret on the results but the choice has to be made in an instant. The VA lead us to understand this emotion. So I won't blame any character, it's just the cruelty of the world.

An exceptional, bittersweet season... i wish game of thrones s8 would be like this...
vault13-347-4853353 June 2019
The second part of season 3 is one of the best anime i have ever watched... this episode is the first of the aftermath of the battle but the lack of fighting is replaced with fantastic emotional scenes and incredible voice acting. I so much wish season 8 of game of thrones was bittersweet (as they promised) and well written (instead of not written at all) as s8 part 2 is...

Deserves a 10.0 as much as last episode's "Hero"
TheFirst018 April 2021
This episode was an emotional rollercoaster. Trying to see who they would choose to revive was nothing short of emotional considering they were two of my favorite characters, but it opened the question as to who they should really revive. This is like a classic episode of Game of Thrones of trying to see who is good and who is bad. A perfect episode that deserves as much merit as the last episode. How could I not know that an animated show would be able to pull so many heartstrings?

Hits like a truck

Why am I doing this to myself, I know every week is like being punched in the gut. No OST? No problem, the japanese VA cast come in and ruin your whole day with outstanding performances. Emotional rollercoaster. This and the previous episodes are such contrasts but represent the wide range of events that can occur in the world of Attack on Titan. Masterpiece.

Beyond Amazing
castillogcaro3 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
All Shiganshina Arc is incredible but the last 3 episodes, the 6 six months of waiting to see them when the manga was being published are the best of all the story.

This espefically... god, they knew how to treat it. The lack of soundtrack and just the sound of fire made it so tense.... Mikasa crying, Hange trying to make her see everyone has lost someone... Levi's gaze when he knows Erwin is alive and then... his sad expression knowing everyone sees him as a weapon and not as a human... wow.

This deserves without a doubt the best episode ever.

Voice actors, animators, director....everyone did an amazing job.

Attack on Titan continues to establish its place at number 1 of all time.
wtmjr-732883 June 2019
Emotional and hard to swallow, just like life we come to face difficult decisions and have to let go of things and people we love, respect and care for. Never knowing what will truly be the best for us in the future. Attack on Titan continues to tackles these questions and develop its story and characters is such a beautiful way. My hat goes off to these writers and artists. BRAVO!!!!!

Disappointing
matchington26 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So, exactly two things happened this episode. First, the scouts hesitated to kill their enemy (for the uptillionth time) and the enemy ended up making a miraculous escape (of course). You'd think they'd learn eventually. All that effort, all that time, all that tension, all that death, all for nothing since Reiner gets away anyway. I've now watched the Scouts try and fail to take Reiner down far more times than could have ever been actually interesting to watch. I was hoping this endless charade would actually reach a conclusion and they'd finally seal the deal, but no, Jean has to pipe up and say "oh but we can steal his power". Who cares? Eren has learned the armoring ability in only 2 months as stated in the show, if given enough time, he could certainly progress to be able to armor himself similarly to Reiner. Why take the risk? Oh, that's right, because Reiner has plot armor. Nice. Makes sense. The blow is made even more crushing since Reiner is saved by the Beast Titan - the OTHER Titan that our heroes had in their grasp and yet hesitated to kill and thus escaped miraculously. IE, the other Titan with plot armor thicker than the Armored Titan's skin.

Second, somehow Levi chose to give Armin the magic serum instead of Erwin. Not only is this senseless, as Erwin is the genius commander that practically built the Scouts into what it is at this point, and led them into countless victories, but it took over half the episode for them to make this decision. The show writers genuinely thought that I'd want to watch 10-15 minutes of Eren screaming about the sea and his dear friend Armin seeing the sea only for Levi to somehow suspend all rational thinking and give in to Eren's emotional plea.

Not only that, but how in the name of everything that makes sense is Armen still alive? Burnt to an absolute crisp, falls a distance of at least 100m, and somehow still breathing? And Erwin is in the same condition after being hit with a rock in the stomach? The plot armor for Armin has never been more obvious. Clearly the writer's wanted Erwin to die and Armin to leave. I would've been able to accept that far better if they didn't also make me watch an entire episode solely about deciding which one should live.

Honestly, I wanted to like this arc. I really did. It's the highest rated arc of the show by far, and these three episodes - Perfect Game, Hero, Midnight Sun - are some of the highest rated episodes of all of television. Perhaps I went in with expectations too high and that's why I'm disappointed. But when you watch episodes that are rated higher than the entirety of the Sopranos, Game of Thrones, all of Breaking Bad save Ozymandias, etc, you'd think that too-high expectations would be impossible. Yet here we are. An arc where one of the best characters of the series is sacrificed for nothing, and is replaced by roasted chicken with plot armor.

But hey, that's just my opinion.

The point where Attack on Titan stopped being and anime
Shmaden25 July 2019
You may be wondering why I say that? Is it because it's bad? Obviously not. My rating in the case of this episode just like in the case for every episode of this second part of season 3 is the maximum IMDB lets me give.

The reason I say that in the title is that this episode made me forget I was watching an anime and gave me the impression that I was watching a real show with real persons who shed tears, fought over decisions and eventually sacrificed something in order to achieve some sort of victory.

Victories don't come without any costs and sometimes in order to move forward we must leave something behind.

Amazing music, animation and especially Voice Acting (eng dubb, but Japanese is also fantastic) made this episode fantastic and along with the previous two episodes the peak of anime. Nothing else even comes close to it.

You cannot deny how this episode made us all in stressful condition, you cannot expect what is coming through the first 20 minutes. It's just outstanding structure and the Dramatic scenes are much more throughout this season. Amazing done. 10/10 for the S3 P2 E18.

Best episode of the show
maxglen16 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I think the whole Shiganshina arc is basically perfect but this is the episode with the most emotional depth and stakes. in this episode alone we got Erwin and Bertolt's actual deaths and the whole sequence with Levi and the syringe is harrowing and incredibly emotional. It just shows that yeah the action is awesome but without an incredible story and emotional core you have nothing. Midnight Sun puts a closer on a few characters and opens some pretty huge and scary doors for others. Even if I do adore each episode leading to this one, Midnight Sun takes the cake for my favourite quite comfortably. 10/10

Levi is humanity's strongest not only for being a perfect fighter and titan killer, he was also able to make one of the hardest choices a person could ever imagine.

Build Up Led to Masterpiece
ctennant-323923 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As a reader of the manga, and a regular viewer of Attack on Titan, I've watched the show for as long as I can remember, ever since it was released a long time back. I keep my interest in shows broad, as I watch many like Doctor Who, Sherlock, Rick and Morty, The Rookie, and much more. However, this season of Attack on Titan has been nothing short of a climax to a build up so far perfectly made. The first episode personally was a solid 9/10, but as each episode got exponentially better, I don't know how this episode could be topped, as I can't think of any other viewing experience worth noting that has been as perfectly made as this. The previous episode played off the previous perfectly, as did this one to that.

Spoiler: Armin dying in the last episode did not catch me off guard as I knew it was happening because I read it beforehand, but it still made me shocked, and this episode did more. The choice between saving Armin or Erwin was perfectly displayed, as each character had their own reasoning personally for choosing one or the other, and the lack of music made the situation feel heavier, but everything tied together will make every viewer still wonder if the choice made at the end was the correct one. The manga community is divided between Erwin and Armin, but the point of war and fighting against impossible odds is that not everyone gets a heroic ending, and not everyone goes out screaming with everything around them crying out their name, and this can happen to anyone in war. And I strongly believe this half season, this show, demonstrates that perfectly, as this episode has as well. This was truly an experience from one of the finest shows not just in anime, but in general.

Silence
tomararun3 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The first 20 minutes of this episode lack any form of soundtrack, and dare I say this has been the best use of a soundtrack ever. The silence in the background is as much a main character as anyone else here. They even went as far as including no opening song. And it was an exceptional decision. Having read the manga, I didn't expect this episode to hit me so hard. The voice actors blew me away with the portrayals of their emotions. When the soundtrack actually came in the last 4 minutes or so, it almost made me cry. One of the best episodes, and I am getting tired of saying this.

Frustrating and Dumb!
ahmadtavakoli-5536721 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Not only they wasted their chances to kill the human-titans, but Levi made the dumbest choice of century : choosing a scout over THE LEADER OF SCOUTS! And he did this dumb move after wasting time and not killing the beast titan.

I know their (dumb) reason : Getting their powers! Its like worrying about your cloths not getting wet while you are on death row! Its like wanting icing on your cake when you don't have cake yet! Almost all scouts are dead and they are worrying to get more advantage. Just kill them! All those people died so you can do that!

And they chose Armin because he had some wild guess and he wanted to see the sea! Instead of the visionary man who raised the scouts to the heights and achieved so much! Oh now I get it, Armin is a main character and they cant die.

This episode is a masterpiece! Last week we were treated to visual gem, with lots of production values. If last week episode had great voice acting, tonight's episode was beyond amazing. This episode shows that this isn't just one of the greatest anime series to date, but also one of the greatest TV shows out there.
