All that jumping!
ackstasis26 August 2007
This zany little stop-motion short has caused quite a sensation on the popular video-sharing website, YouTube, and it was with some surprise that I discovered that this apparently-"amateur" film was recognised as legitimate on the Internet Movie Database. This eligibility arises from the fact that the film has featured at two well-known film festivals: the Boston Underground Film Festival and the Riverrun International Film Festival. "Tony vs Paul" was written and directed by two first-time filmmakers, Paul Cummings and Tony Fiandaca, who also star as two former friends who engage in a wacky stop-motion battle through the countryside of Massachusetts, USA.

The film makes use of pixilation – an animation technique using live actors as stop-motion objects – which was made popular back in 1952 in Norman McLaren's short, "Neighbours." It uses the technique exceedingly well, with the characters' movements always seeming completely smooth, particularly when each man finds himself gliding a good one metre above the ground (an effect accomplished by continuously jumping into the air for each frame). According to the filmmakers, the film took two months to film and edit, and – stop motion being a relatively tedious process – you can imagine what sort of patience the two must have been required to have. The film's soundtrack, which is a catchy little techno tune, was performed by the third and final credited crew member, Christopher Donovan.

To be perfectly honest, there's really nothing significant about this film. The story is virtually non-existent, and it doesn't say anything important or incite any powerful emotions. However, it does demonstrate the commitment of the two filmmakers so very well, and some of the visuals can only be described as "cool." I look forward to their next effort.

Exceptional

I've seen a few shorts and TV commercials from back in the 60s and 70s that were done using the same sort of stop-motion technique, but this film outdoes them all and is simply amazing to watch. Paul Cummings and Tony Fiandaca wrote and co-directed this weird film AND even starred in it--what an accomplishment! Especially since it must have taken something like a bazillion pictures to piece it all together into this very artistic and clever film.

It begins with one guy writing a letter to an ex-friend--telling him that he hates him. Magically, the letter zips along the ground to the friends house and watching this process AND what happens to the letter immediately told me that this is no ordinary stop-motion film! What comes next is a long and very surreal fight sequence that just can't be described--you MUST see it for yourself.

Extremely well made from start to finish. The stop-motion was seamless, the music very appropriate and TONY VS. PAUL was a joy throughout.

A poignant snapshot of life in stop motion
dollzbaby9 September 2007
This graphic depiction of a friendship turned sour is more than merely a stop-motion fight: it is an exploration into our subconscious and, as a result, is a humbling take on today's society. I find it particularly powerful as I too was once in the situation we see in the film, and had not the grace to shake hands with my rival and glide into the sunset. It is because of this mistake in my life that I believe this film ought be shown to all children of a certain age, that age being 12.I have found that an intimate portrait such as this can greatly effect the way we view life, and the force with which 'Tony vs. Paul' has effected mine is unprecedented. The patience with which they persist in their laborious battle is to be admired, as is their grace and consistency - in flight and underwater. This film is like an early 'Bond' movie. Unconcerned with the societal constraints placed on filmmakers in this frightening age of cinema, the creators of 'Tony vs. Paul' have gracefully stripped us of our preconceptions and childish perceptions. An hilarious and current take on the world as we know it, with scene stealing performances by both eponymous characters. 10/10.

Try this tune as a mix: Klute: Lie, Cheat & Steal. Just watched the video with Pandora in the background and the above playing. Works an absolute treat.....

Very nice work by the way.
