Rinty is in a weight pulling contest at an Indian village. Gahewa is a gracious loser, but the squaw he likes, Lolumi, makes a fuss over Rip. Chief Cheronini tells Rust there is nothing like a woman for making trouble.
Rip gives Cheronini a gift but Lolumi takes it. And Chief Cheronini was right about women making trouble. Masters is informed Col. Parker's wife has decided a fort is no place for Rusty. She has decided Rusty needs a mother and she is planning on taking Rusty. Rusty says he is not going to leave Fort Apache or Rip. Rip says if he was married he could adopt Rusty, but he's not.
Rusty gets an idea. He and Rinty trap some wild horses. Rusty will use the horses to give to Cheronini so he can "buy" Lolumi. Rusty gives the horses to Cheronini claiming they are from Rip; Cheronini can return the gift by giving Lolumi to Rip. But Gahewa also wants Lolumi.
Col. Parker is upset that no one knows where Rusty is; and that's proof Rusty needs the care of a woman. Rusty appears and announces he has a woman. Rip wants to know who is getting married? You are Rip, Rusty says he has fixed everything. Col. Parker says Rip will marry Lolumi; it's good for peace between the Indians and the soldiers.
Rip is not happy with Rusty; and tells Rusty he has brought everyone close to war, and ruined Rip's life. That night Gahewa captures Lolumi. So now what? Rusty and Rinty go looking and find Gahewa and Lolumi. But Lolumi is beginning to like Gahewa. Through a diversion, Rusty rescues Lolumi, but Cheronini is angry and is promising war. Rusty manages to show up with Lolumi. Before Rip can officially marry Lolumi, Gahewa claims the right to fight Masters. Rip doesn't want to fight or worse, win the fight.
Only one happy is Lolumi that such a big fuss is being made over her. Rip wins, but Lolumi wants Gahewa. Cheronini is happy if Rip will allow Lolumi to marry Gahewa. Rip is really happy.
