Luke and Brie Are On a First Date is a real find. I heard about this film through my exploration of the "mumblecore" movement that has been happening in the US for the last few years. But I must say that this film really takes the ideals of simplicity and story, put forth by previous mumblecore filmmakers, to the next level.
As you might guess, the story is a simple one. The title says it all. Luke and Brie, two twenty something Los Angelenos, are on a first date. But it's much more than that. Through superior writing, directing and acting, the viewer is reminded of their many first dates: the pain, the elation, the uncertainty, the speculation. You really feel for, and identify with, these characters. Everything about a first date is captured here in its simple minutiae.
The greatest thing about Luke and Brie is that it knows exactly what it is and isn't afraid to be just that. The movie was shot on no budget over the course of 5 days and it proves that you can make a really touching, honest, unpretentious film under terribly modest terms. That is a rarity to say the least.
This film is on the festival circuit so keep your eye out. You won't be disappointed.
