Just wait for the last ten minutes.

Stirling and co are left a laughing stock when their first mission goes horribly wrong, to try to redeem themselves, they try again at Mersa Brega, albeit with a reduced number.

This was one immaculately produced episode, visually this was absolutely spot on, the scenes of a storm hammered desert looked amazing, the planes in the sky, even more so.

I hadn't realised just how good this series was going to be, this was another pretty awesome episode. We had the conception episode, the plan, here we had the failure, but like the phoenix from the flames, The SAS will now have a point to prove.

Finally we get some action sequences, and they are pretty awesome. The last ten minutes are incredible.

I am struck by the authenticity of it, it feels as though visually they've done what they needed to do, the airbase, costumes etc look terrific.

Episode 3 goes from strength to strength, flaunting the ambitious BBC series' high production values & showcasing its impressive ability to balance character with both grandiose scale & genuine moments of spectacle, now the hard work of introductory establishment & obligatory world building has been (mostly) completed.

Thus, this newfound freedom provides the extraordinarily talented Tom Shankland - (leading a fantastic crew) alongside his phenomenal DoP Stephan Pehrsson - with the much needed opportunity to really flex their collective filmmaking muscles here (an opportunity which they unquestioningly capitalise on), demonstrating what they're able to accomplish on screen whilst working together - when given the rare chance to artistically experiment - & it's truly a joy to watch them push themselves creatively, quite literally soaring to new heights. Consequently, audiences are gifted with beautifully shot & realised set pieces that boast both great direction & cinematography, culminating to form truly epic moments of dramatic television which help make this particular outing especially brilliant.

Not only that, but it's refreshing seeing the juvenility of the male ensemble accepted & addressed, rather rather glamourised or swept under the rug (& resultantly, inadvertently condoned / normalised through negligent representation); the team's comprised of deeply flawed male characters who are each acknowledged to be broken, emotionally stunted, volatile & troublesome in their own ways, possessing what are arguably considered as extremely problematic attributes (usually embodying the idea of "toxic masculinity"); the story therefore takes the time to remind audiences of this as their arcs progress & simply captures how the men just so happen to find themselves in an unfathomably odd situation where these antagonistic imperfections could be used to the UK's advantage & amusingly, actually beneficial for the rest of Western World (which would otherwise be harmed by them, during peace time), so I appreciate the conscientious depiction of their behaviours (portraying them rightly as chaotic anti-heroes, rather than inherently good) as they navigate their way through a surrealistic world that grows ever more incomprehensible with every passing day. Helps to maintain that sense of reality to provide viewers with a grounded perspective to fall back on, should they lose sight of what's important.

Let the games begin

Two episodes have introduced the characters and the situation.

The "gentlemen" of the newly formed SAS are seen as expendable by the intelligence operator who created them in fiction, in reality they initially also suffer appalling loss.

The pace has picked up now we are being shown the exploits of the new group. After the first, costly, setback they are joined with the Long Range Desert Group. Two sets of mad buggers become mutually supportive and devastate German and Italian airfields and supply dumps.

That devastation looks good on film - apart from the Hollywood explosions - all rolling flame and little blast, unlike it would look in reality. We have become so acclimatised to the spectacular orange flames that productions that show explosives as they should look appear dull in comparison. Much as a space epic without battle noise seems weird.

Anyway, that digression aside, the model work and CGI looks fairly convincing. And the desert - well that is a star in its own right, well captured by the DoP.

And now the games have been announced and the scores are chalked on the board it is apparent our David has a wee bit of catching up to do ...

The third instalment continues the trend of each episode being better than the last. With the groundwork laid out, "Episode 3" shifts its emphasis to its characters; the first half of this episode has a tone considerably different from the rest of the series thus far, one that is rather serious and genuine. Nevertheless, the episode doesn't stray from its usual course for long and quickly returns to style with the most action-packed episode thus far. Stellar work by Director Tom Shankland and the rest of the crew that worked on this episode. With the first three episodes out of the way, I expect it will continue to get more fierce and adventurous as it goes along; I'm excited for what comes next!

You do not have to be mad to be in the SAS but it certainly helps. As the lads go on their first mission and find themselves stranded far away from their target point.

There is no room for bickering, pragmatism and playing safe. After all their eventual motto will be Who Dares Wins.

Stirling might think that his unit are expendable, born to lose. Dudley Wrangel Clarke learns good news and for once he did not make it up.

A phantom group of men blew up an enemy airfield and quickly vanished. In this clash, there could be only one winner.

The pace certainly stepped up, there was loads of action and CGI explosions in the desert.
