You know the worst part about these tech conferences where billionaires confidently strut across stages extolling the virtues of the latest technological breakthrough to a crowd of doe-eyed supporters? The fact that there's an almost cult-like refusal to admit that technology has any downsides whatsoever. We're firmly in the age of social media now and it's fair to say that this particular technology has come with its own set of unique flaws that, as Netflix's "The Social Dilemma" revealed, have the power to destabilize societal structures and produce wide-ranging negative social consequences.
When it comes to that last point, there's arguably no actor who could articulate it better than Anne Hathaway. The Oscar-winner, who will soon fall in love with a pop star in "The Idea of You," went through the social media wringer in particularly conspicuous fashion back in the early 2010s when the internet suddenly decided they hated her.

Like a peckish panda let loose in a showroom for bamboo patio furniture, the modern audience’s craving for true-life stories is seemingly insatiable. And like said ursine gnawing greedily on a flavorful teakwood club chair, nonfiction has been steadily gobbling up narrative filmmaking, with almost every major news item of the last 40 years being dutifully reimagined as a prestige limited series. And sure, projects like HBO’s Love and Death or Hulu’s The Dropout can help fill the void abdicated by the mid-budget studio drama, but where does that leave actual documentary movies—or documentary filmmakers for that matter?
While there’s certainly not an overabundance of industry support out there for emerging nonfiction filmmakers, there is at the very least the Film Independent Documentary Lab. And today, we’re thrilled to welcome seven new Fellows and six new projects to the 2023 Doc Lab cohort. “Documentary filmmakers remain...

As concerns for AI’s rapid growth circulate among almost every industry, Tristan Harris and Aza Raskin, contributors on the 2020 Netflix documentary-drama film “The Social Dilemma,” warn there is no “pull[ing] the plug” on the technology in an upcoming interview with NBC News’ Lester Holt.
In an exclusive clip of the interview shared with TheWrap, which airs Wednesday on “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” as part of NBC News’ ongoing “A.I. Revolution” series, Harris warns that the technology’s widespread evolution is happening so quickly that even the experts can’t keep up.
“The CEOs of the big AI labs are saying they can’t even keep up with the pace because people are inventing new improvements so much faster than their own understanding,” Harris tells Holt in the clip.

Despite Ken Jeong’s joke that “Netflix’s days are numbered,” the streamer just had its best-ever performance at the Emmy Awards. After nine years of nominations for the biggest prize of the night, Netflix has finally won not one, but two of the top honors with victories in Best Drama Series for “The Crown” and Best Limited Series for “The Queen’s Gambit.”
These two programs contributed significantly to Netflix’s best outing at the Emmys. Before Sunday night’s Primetime Emmy Awards, Netflix had a sizable trophy advantage over its closest streaming and premium cable competitors Disney+ and HBO with 34 victories from the Creative Arts alone versus 13 and 10, respectively. Across all four Emmy ceremonies, Netflix won a total of 44 trophies out of its 133 total nominations. Though its nominations tally dropped nearly 17% from last year when it had 160 nominations, it far outperformed itself year-over-year in terms of victories, topping its 21 wins last year.

It really is Netflix’s world, and the rest of the TV industry is just living in it.

“Boys State,” “Dick Johnson Is Dead,” The Social Dilemma,” and “76 Days” all won Emmys last weekend during the Creative Arts ceremonies, but they share another distinction: They are the last documentaries able to win a statuette from the Television Academy for the same nonfiction film that successfully qualified for Academy Award consideration.
The Television Academy shut down the controversial practice of awards double-dipping earlier this year, decreeing that, beginning in 2022, any documentary placed on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences viewing platform for Oscar shortlist consideration, “will be deemed a theatrical motion picture and thus ineligible for the Emmy competition.”
The straightforward rule is expected to have major awards-season ramifications for documentaries, and filmmakers surveyed by Variety about the subject have mixed feelings about it. For decades, documentary filmmakers and the companies that back their work have campaigned for Emmy statuettes after a fight for a little gold man,...

“Boys State,” the Apple TV+ documentary film directed and produced by Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine, won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special on Sunday afternoon.
The documentary special, which premiered on Apple’s streaming service in August 2020, followed a group of teenage boys in Texas who created a representative government. Apple’s official synopsis for the documentary reads:
“‘Boys State’ is a wildly entertaining and continually revealing immersion into a week-long annual program in which a thousand Texas high school seniors gather for an elaborate mock exercise: building their own state government. Filmmakers Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine closely track the escalating tensions that arise within a particularly riveting gubernatorial race, training their cameras on unforgettable teenagers like Ben, a Reagan-loving arch-conservative who brims with confidence despite personal setbacks, and Steven, a progressive-minded child of Mexican immigrants who stands by his convictions amidst the sea of red.

HBO’s “Welcome to Chechnya” and Netflix’s “Dick Johnson is Dead” were strong contenders for Best Documentary Feature at the Oscars this past year, but neither made the cut with the motion picture academy. However, the Oscars’ loss is the Emmys’ gain as both nonfiction films are nominated for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking, along with another film that just missed out at the Oscars, “76 Days.” But which film will win?
Unlike in past years, there are no Oscar nominees in this year’s Emmy lineup; documentaries used to be anomalous in that they were often eligible at both events. But the Emmys instituted a new rule stating that “any programs that have been nominated for an Oscar are no longer eligible to enter the Primetime Emmy Awards competition.” So no more cases like “Free Solo” winning the Oscar and then sweeping the Emmys a few months later.

Honoring the best scores, soundtracks, and songs made for TV, film, and even video games, the field has awarded some iconic movie music, with past winners ranging from Disney’s “The Lion King” to “The Social Network” score to Lady Gaga’s “Shallow” from “A Star is Born.” Let’s take a look at this year’s contenders for these awards in media music.
SEECan anyone beat Olivia Rodrigo for Best New Artist Grammy? Make your predictions now Best Song Written For Visual Media
This category could have a wide range of media represented. The front-runner in my opinion is H.E.R.’s Oscar-winning “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Winning the Oscar is not necessarily a guarantee of winning here, but...

When Mark Crawford started working on the recent Netflix documentary “The Social Dilemma,” he was originally only working as a sound recorder for the film. “At the beginning I had no expectations that I would become the composer,” he tells us in our recent webchat (watch the video above). While recording he would think about what kind of music to put along to the film, sketched out some ideas and sent them to Davis Coombe, the film’s editor, who put them into some of the scenes which caught the eye of director, Jeff Orlowski. “He kind of stopped and said, “Who did this piece?’ And it always kinda came back to me and so that was where the first initial discussions happened.”

As the new school year begins, Netflix is making the documentary The Social Dilemma available for free on YouTube, through the end of September. After just a couple of days, it’s recorded over 63,000 views, with one viewer commenting, “Literally one of the best and worthy documentaries I have ever watched in my life.”
Television Academy voters have proven similarly enthusiastic. The documentary directed and co-written by Jeff Orlowski, produced by Larissa Rhodes, and edited and co-written by Davis Coombe earned seven Emmy nominations, more than any other single film.
“We were totally speechless and really not expecting any of them, let alone seven of them,” Rhodes tells Deadline of the nominations. “For this team, we just felt hugely proud and humbled by that response and that recognition.”

While Jeff Orlowski was very passionate about tackling social media in “The Social Dilemma,” the film’s producer, Larissa Rhodes, questioned the importance of the subject matter. “We thought we have really big existential crises that we need to tackle–climate change being one of them. How was this story and this message on par with any of those kind of big scale problems,” Rhodes tells us during our recent webchat (watch the video above). But as she started to hear what former insiders from Silicon Valley and industry experts were saying in their interviews, her point-of-view quickly came around. “It really became clear how detrimental the social media platforms and search companies were to our society.”

Last Year’s Winner: “The Apollo”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: After Netflix took home back-to-back trophies in 2016 and 2017 (“13th”), HBO has rattled off three consecutive wins in the Best Documentary or Nonfiction Special category: “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling” (2018), “Leaving Neverland” (2019), and “The Apollo” (2020). HBO remains the most-awarded network in the category’s 23-year-history, with 11 total wins.
Fun Fact: This year, 78 documentary or nonfiction specials made the Emmy ballot, falling just three submissions shy of qualifying for an additional nomination. Due to the sliding scale the Emmys instituted last year, categories with 20-80 submissions will nominate five projects, while categories with 81-160 submissions will nominate six projects. Had a few networks known an extra nomination was that close, perhaps they would have scrounged up three more documentaries for the ballot.
Notable Ineligible Series: “Hemingway” (the three-episode PBS documentary is running in the Documentary Series category); “My Octopus Teacher,...

Can Conan O’Brien finally win Best Variety Series? These Experts say he’ll upset ‘Last Week Tonight’
Conan O’Brien took over NBC’s “Late Night” in 1993 — 28 years ago. But after almost three decades in late night he still hasn’t won the top Emmy for variety programs. This past June he ended his latest venture, TBS’s “Conan,” after 11 years on the air, and the television academy subsequently welcomed him back to the race for Best Variety Talk Series. Can he dethrone the five-time reigning champ “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”?
Though O’Brien’s “Late Night” started in 1993, he wasn’t nominated for the top award until 2003, at which point the Jon Stewart extended universe started winning and has never stopped. Since then, no other talk shows have won. His “Daily Show” won Best Variety Series 10 years in a row (2003-2012). Then after the Emmys split that award into talk and sketch categories, “Daily Show” won again in 2015 for Stewart’s farewell season. In-between, “Daily...

Last month, after the release of his latest documentary, “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain,” Morgan Neville disclosed that he used artificial intelligence to simulate the voice of Bourdain. Outrage ensued and writers used it as an opportunity to pen headlines that said the project served as a reminder that documentaries are journalism.
But while it’s true that documentaries have never been a part of the fourth estate — an institution whose ability to be completely objective is debatable — most documentaries set out to expose a truth via journalistic tactics including research, making sense of the facts and interviewing subjects. This year many such projects — including “City So Real,” “Allen v. Farrow,” “Framing Britney Spears,” “The Social Dilemma” and “Welcome to Chechnya” — received Emmy nominations.

This year’s batch of Emmy nominated filmmakers for both documentary and nonfiction encompass a wide spectrum that include veterans who have greatly influenced the genre and younger creatives getting their first dose of wide exposure. In getting to talk with them, it was incredible to hear them not only talk about the works that influenced their decision to go into nonfiction storytelling, but also the nonfiction works that have stood out to them in more recent years. Gold Derby recently had these discussions with Kirby Dick (“Allen v. Farrow”), Amanda McBaine (“Boys State”), Steve James (“City So Real”), Tom Campbell (“RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked”) and Jeff Orlowski (“The Social Dilemma”) during our recent “Meet the Experts” panel.

Even though the current president doesn’t weaponize Twitter the same way that his predecessor did, Jeff Orlowski wants people to know that social media is still further polarizing the country. “Each and every one of us has a different Twitter or a different Facebook, that’s being personalized and customized to my experience just to keep me on the platform,” Orlowski tells Gold Derby in our Meet the Experts: Documentary and Nonfiction panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). Seeing how social media has further isolated us as a society and help to prop up things like Covid disinformation and conspiracies that resulted in the riot at the Capitol on January 6th has left Orlowski with a pretty stark take on things. “I fundamentally do believe that this technology is incompatible with a healthy and functioning democracy.”

Emmy nominations in the doc categories are giving films passed over by the Oscars a shot at some trophies of their own.
Dick Johnson Is Dead, directed by Kirsten Johnson, 76 Days, from director Hao Wu, and Welcome to Chechnya, directed by David France, earned nominations in the juried category of Outstanding Merit in Documentary Filmmaking. Each of those films had made the Oscar Documentary Feature shortlist earlier in the year, but didn’t earn Oscar nominations.

Updated with quotes from original 8:54 a.m. story: Framing Britney Spears, the New York Times documentary that brought renewed attention to the pop singer’s conservatorship, earned an Emmy nomination Tuesday for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special.
“It’s really wonderful to be recognized,” director-producer Samantha Stark told Deadline. “We had a big team that made this so it was great to be nominated in this category because it’s the whole team’s work together.”
But she added, “We have mixed feelings about it because Britney is currently in this [conservatorship] court battle… So it is a little odd for us to be celebrated in this way when that’s happening. But what I hope it signifies is how many people want to know the truth about Britney and are interested in really learning the real stories.”

The TV Academy music branch is clearly not impressed by big names.
None of the superstars who entered the 2020-21 Emmy competition in the music categories — including H.E.R., Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, Sara Bareilles, Dolly Parton and Cher — were rewarded Wednesday when the 73rd annual Emmy Award nominations were announced.
Rather, the majority of nominees in the seven music categories were largely familiar composers, songwriters, music directors and music supervisors within the scoring community.
The biggest musical names nominated were Marcus Mumford for the theme for “Ted Lasso,” Grammy president-ceo Harvey Mason Jr. for “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” jazzman Branford Marsalis for a History Channel documentary, two-time Oscar winners Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for their hummable songs for “WandaVision,” and Tony winner Marc Shaiman for a song on a YouTube special.

HBO took back the top spot in the overall Emmy nominations count, thanks to HBO Max, topping Netflix by a single nod on Tuesday.
HBO/HBO Max scored 130 nominations, beating Netflix’s 129. Disney+ was the third-most nominated platform with 71. NBC was fourth and first among the broadcast networks with a very distant 46 nods. If we’re breaking out HBO from HBO Max, HBO would have placed second with 94 nods.
However, when that figure breaks down by media company, Disney (which owns Disney+ and Hulu as well as ABC and Freeform) comes out on top with 136 nominations. On the studio side, Warner Bros. led with 79.
Netflix’s 160 noms last year shattered HBO’s prior record from the year before, when the pay-cable network earned 137 nominations.

In the narrative world, sequels are all the rage for films and even “limited” series if the first installment is wildly successful, but seldom do you see follow-ups for documentaries. But all six filmmakers at Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: Documentary panel — Samantha Stark (“The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears”), J. Clay Tweel (“Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults”), Cecilia Peck and Inbal B. “The Social Dilemma” showcases the harmful impact social media has had on society, and for director Jeff Orlowski, he hadn’t always seen it that way. As an “avid, super-heavy user,” Orlowski “used it all the time.” “I describe myself as addicted and that has swung all the way to today where I don’t touch it at all,” he shares at Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: Documentary panel (watch above). “I don’t use it. I haven’t deleted the accounts because they still provide access to people and connectivity, but as I learned during this project, they don’t provide connection really. It’s a false sense of connection. But it has been such a huge shift for me personally to remove social media from my daily life.”

The 14th annual Television Academy Honors list is out, recognizing seven exceptional TV programs and their producers who used powerful and innovative storytelling to advance social change.
The list spans three documentaries, two dramas, an anthology series and a late-night comedy news show: For Life, I Am Greta, I May Destroy You, Little America, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, The Social Dilemma and Welcome to Chechnya. Read details on each program below.
Television Academy Honors annually celebrates programs across numerous platforms and genres that elevate complex issues facing society.
