Learning the lingo

I can imagine the meeting. "But of course, my dear producers," said Sigourney, "I speak amazing French." Sadly, she doesn't. It's a brave attempt but it surely must be grating to any French person's ears. She gets the vocab right but scores zero points for the lack of any accent or inflection. It's like listening to a school French tutorial.

At least the regular cast save this episode - especially Camille in her showdown.

OK except Sigourney

While this show always manages to get the "human" touches right, namely the personal stories of the agents, the storylines involving the "talents" sometimes lack warmth.

This is especially true for this episode, where Sigourney Weaver plays - not very convincingly - an insufferable diva version of herself. I hope it was just playing, because her character was quite annoying.

Also, the plot threads again the path of female empowerment, where they went over and over again, and in this particular instance the 70 yo actress demands a love interest half her age because that's what male actors do and nobody cares. That is not so true, especially these last years, when a huge age gap between male and female raised more than an eyebrow.

Jumping the shark
dplatt-110 August 2021
The Sigourney Weaver episode came close to jumping the shark for this otherwise brilliant series. The addition of the American actress brought with it a rickety and unconvincing plot involving how randy older women should be portrayed in cinema- and even lapsed into a weird and hammy dance number at one point. That- plus a silly Laurel and Hardy caper/surveillance subplot with Elise (whose contract must be the worst commercial document ever written) just rounded off the meh quality of this episode. The one outstanding element was the Mathias character development which was touching and effective. Weakest episode of the fourth series.
