A horror movie slated to open in October means buzz and solid expectations. It used to be you rarely saw the genre at any other time — back before studios discovered how cheap they were to produce and how palatable they were to teens looking for something to do on a Friday night whether it proved enjoyably worthwhile or not. Securing this coveted spot was therefore a win for Stx Entertainment and their film The Bye Bye Man, either through hard work or sheer luck. Watching it shift up from October 14th, 2016 to June 3rd may have even been a testament to its success until yet another shuffle to January 13th, 2017. Don’t let the connotations Friday the 13th conjures fool you. The Bye Bye Man was dumped.
Suddenly my cautious optimism evaporated into knowing skepticism as another sub-par riff on the Boogie Man appeared to be making its way onto...

Last month, Eric Prydz revealed that he would be dropping his first ever essential mix under his techno alter ego Cirez D. The celebrated DJ has gained acclaim for his previous essential mixes for BBC Radio 1, and he delivered the debut Cirez D mix last weekend for the packed crowds at UK based festival Creamfields.
An audio rip of the essential mix has now hit SoundCloud, givings fans the chance to hear the hour long set from Prydz. As expected, the set weighs heavy with top notch techno and features a number of unreleased tunes from the Cirez D project, mixed in alongside music from Sam Paganini, Monica Kruse, Jel Ford and more.
Eric Prydz delivers a solid hour of techno on the Cirez D essential mix, seamlessly blended together to provide an irresistible dance experience. The presence of a number of unreleased IDs will appeal to fans as well,...

Primera Mirada, a privately funded works-in-progress showcase, formed to promote Central America and Caribbean cinema, screened five films out of a total submission of 46 works-in-progress during the Panama Film Festival.
Evaluated by an international jury during the International Film Festival of Panama 2016, two works in post-production won awards and three won kudos as well. “Noeli Overseas”/ “Noeli en los países” will screen in the Cannes Market this May.
Serving as international jury of Primera Mirada were Iván Giroud Gárate, director of the Havana International Film Festival, Yissel Ibarra, responsible for Strategic Projects of the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (Imcine), and Jaie Laplante, director the Miami International Film Festival. I can hazard a guess that these films will be screened in Jaie’s and Iván’s respective festivals when they are completed. All five have great strengths, which is, of course, why they were chosen out of 46 submitted works-in-progress.
The jury awarded the prize of Us$ 10,000 to the Dominican film “Noeli Overseas”/ “Noeli en los países” by director Laura Amelia Guzmán, with the expectation that this award will help the film find its way in the international scene. Laura Amelia Guzmán is a producer and director, known for “Cochochi” (2007), “Jean Gentil” (2010) and “Sand Dollars” (2014). Producer Desiree Reyes comes out of Cuba’s Eictv and has produced Laura’s films “Sand Dollars” and “Jean Gentil” as well as numerous more recent films. In this documentary, Noelí becomes an actress and travels to Europe, where she reunites with her mother and starts feeling homesick.
The jury also awarded Us $5,000 to the Panamanian debut film “Sultán” by director Enrique Castro, with the hope that this support will help its completion and help this story be seen by many around the world. December 20th 1999, a grandmother, her daughter-in-law and her grandson live a conflict and mourn. They blame each other for the death of a man - her son, her husband, his father - the night of the brutal U.S. military invasion of Panama ten years ago. It all gets worst when Sultan, the grandmother's dog, kills her grandson's puppy. Now only the deceased can reconcile them with their past.
This industry section is solely funded by the private equity, whose monetary contributions are directly handed to the winner.
Primera Mirada’s winning film, “Noelí en los países," will also benefit from an agreement between Iff Panama and Marché du Film de Cannes; one of the few agreements between Cannes and Latin America (aside from their partnership with Ventana Sur). The film will screen in the Marché, an integral part of the Cannes Film Festival, widely regarded as one of the most prominent film festivals and film markets around the world. Travel and accommodations are included in the prize package. In addition, Boogie Man Media, a renowned design company that specializes in creative advertising campaigns, will design the film’s poster.
"Noeli Overseas"/ "Noelí en los países" will screen as part of the Panama film showcase along with the Audience Award winning “Salsipuedes”.
Read interview with filmmakers of "Salsipuedes".
Primera Mirada was created in 2015, and its first winner was Guatemalan director Julio Hernández-Cordón and his film "I Promise You Anarchy"/ "Te prometo anarquía". The film premiered in Locarno, continued to Tiff and a surprisingly long list of top festivals in the international film festival circuit, while also receiving critical acclaim. “I Promise You Anarchy" was finally projected at Iff Panama 2016, much to its audience’s delight. Latido represents international sales. The Film Collaborative holds U.S. rights.

With the death of horror film legend Christopher Lee, the last of the legendary honor guard of horror has passed on. He was part of an elite group that created the horror genre. Lee’s passing is a reminder that it’s been a long time since we had a new horror film superstar. Is the day of the horror film specialist gone forever? Where are the big-screen boogie-men for the 21st century?
Once upon a time there were a group of actors, known as the ‘screen boogiemen’ who created the horror film/monster movie genre (starting in Universal Studios and later in Hammer Studios.) They were specialists who understood the psychology and performance style of horror cinema and became legends in the industry. The first was silent film star Lon Chaney Sr. (Phantom of the Opera, London After Midnight, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Unholy Three, the Monster,...

One of the zombie apocalypse's most durable survivors, an elite galactic hunter, a well-meaning Mogwai, a ghost with a sense of humor, two vastly different characters from Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas, and more are included in Hallmark's recently unveiled lineup of 2015 holiday ornaments:

Holding his crossbow, Daryl may give off a lone-wolf vibe, but his actions prove otherwise. Time and again, he risks his own life to protect those around him, making himself a valued group leader and a popular character with fans of AMC's The Walking Dead."

It was very sad to hear of the passing of Mike Vraney on January 2nd, he was only 56 years old. Anyone who is a true movie geek, film fan, or cinema addict owes him a debt of thanks. With Something Weird Video Vraney made available hundreds, if not thousands of hours of rare, obscure and vintage films, most of which were, well..really weird.
Consider his association with Dave Friedman and H,G. Lewis, Swv put out virtually their entire catalog of films first on VHS and then dvd. Not to mention the films of Harry Novak, Coffin Joe and his bizarre films from South America and many other rare titles that were impossible to see, not so long ago.
Swv put out hundreds of collections of nudie cutie loops, stag films, trailers for drive-in swill and compilations of highway safety and class room instructional films.

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry draw the line in Japan.
Aerosmith: Rock For The Rising Sun , recorded during their 2011 tour of Japan, is the storied American band’s first live video release in nine years, since the release of You Gotta Move in 2004.
In March 2011, Japan was beset by a huge earthquake, a monstrous tsunami and the subsequent meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear plant. In the autumn of 2011, despite advice to the contrary, Aerosmith brought their “Back On The Road” tour to Japan, a country with which they’d always had a special relationship.
Rock For The Rising Sun follows the band on that tour, combining full-length live tracks with behind the scenes footage.

April is a banner month for Rob Zombie, who made two bloody splashes in one week: last week not only marked the theatrical release of his long-awaited feature film The Lords of Salem (check out our Salem interview with Rob here), but he also rolled out his fifth full-length solo album Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor, the first release on his own label Zodiac Swan. The follow-up to 2010's Hellbilly Deluxe 2 is a strong career move for Rob, who opted to dig deeper and tap into his late '90s roots in White Zombie, namely the legendary Astro-Creep 2000. HD2 was still a cool album in itself, and a solid sequel to Rob's career-defining solo debut, but the Z-man has wisely chosen to diversify his style while balancing his old and new musical strengths on this project. Zombie's signature sound has certainly not been overthrown for anything radically new here, but the...

Without getting too spoilerific, it seemed clear from the end of Sinister that Pagan deity Bagul (aka Mr Boogie) was being set up to potentially stalk again. Since the film made north of $85m on a $3m budget, it's no great surprise to hear that producer Jason Blum, via his Blumhouse production company, is setting the wheels in motion for Sinister 2.The first film involves Ethan Hawke as a hack true crime writer, who moves - along with his wife and kids, duh - into a house that was the site of a previous family's gruesome murder. He then discovers a box of 8mm films of other murders stowed in his attic, and finds his ongoing investigation leading into dark territory. The big bad was eventually revealed as the aforementioned Boogie man, who eats the souls of children and can get at you through pictures of himself (whether they be recordings,...

On Monday, June 4, Starz announced that their hit show "Spartacus" wouldn't go beyond Season 3. Though fans will be disappointed to hear the news, it sounds like this season is going to be even more intense than the last. Zap2it spoke to executive producer Steven DeKnight, who gave us some information about what we're going to see in the final season "Spartacus: War of the Damned."
He tells us a bit more about the new character Crassus, played by Simon Merrels. "We have mentioned that Crassus is kind of the "Elite Roman Boogie Man". Everybody whispers about Crassus. You don't want to cross Crassus. We really knew that we were gonna introduce Crassus, but we wanted to lay in that feeling that this is a guy that not only the rebels fear, but also other Romans fear. It's no secret that we're big fans of Eddie McClintock around here. The sexy star of Warehouse 13 has not one, not two, but three photo galleries on our Facebook page, and had us tuning in to the show long before they ever introduced a gay character last year. The former wrestler from Ohio is loudly pro-equality, with a wicked sense of humor that comes from a genuine place in his heart. He recently spoke with me about the show, playing gay on Felicity, growing up in the Midwest, his family, and the created family he now has on Warehouse 13. He even invited us into his home for a revealing photo shoot. This is obviously the beginning of my campaign to have him in our Hot 100 this year.

Last week, record turnout for the midterm elections shifted the balance of political power in the United States, swinging the pendulum of public opinion back to the Gop. Despite Jon Stewart’s rally to remind Americans where the common ground exists, the election was a particularly insane clash of sniping and finger-pointing. Rarely does political discourse become a meaningful debate anymore, never more evident than the regularly scheduled shouting matches the television networks pass off as news to fill their 24-hour cycles.
Swirling a veritable maelstrom of spin cycles is Fox News, whose “fair and balanced” motto is more of a punchline than a promise and whose slanted punditry is typically more provocative than it is informative. It’s also a fitting new home for Republican political analyst and now Fox News contributor Karl Rove, the “architect” who made mudslinging an art form and is widely credited for the successful...

This week I watched five Animated films of differing styles and topics that were My Neighbour Totoro, The Incredibles, Nightmare Before Christmas, The Lion King and Grave of the Fireflies.
Now we are around the half way mark at week 26 I’m starting to consider the films which are not on the list and wonder how the voting for certain films was done. For example the Pixar and Miyazaki films are all stunning, brilliant movies and deserve to be in the top 250 movies or there about in terms of animated films but are they really the best animation has to offer? Wall-e was the clear favorite animated movie at the placing of 43 on our list (Now placed at 47 on the current IMDb list) and at the time of writing this post Toy Story 3 has actually got to No. 6 which is incredible.

Leap Year: "People who subject themselves to romantic comedies (and I'd be one of them even if it weren't my job) know to expect and accept a certain amount of formulism and a few standard contrivances when they step into the theater. But Leap Year is wholly unacceptable. It's an appallingly bad movie, painfully dull and achingly false. There's not a low enough expectation that you could set before viewing Leap Year that would allow you to avoid disappointment. If you go in expecting to have your bowels punctured with a rusty blade, you'll still walk out wondering why they used a pitchfork." - Dustin Rowles

Richard Finch, a music producer and co-founder,of Kc and the Sunshine Band (remember "Shake Your Booty" and "Keep It Comin' Love"?), has reportedly acknowledged having sex with teenage boys.

Best Films Of The Decade (aka The Naughties) From Alex & Terry
List # 1
By Alex Simon
When Terry and I initially discussed writing these lists, I had a tough time thinking back on 20 films over the past decade which I was really taken with, thinking that movies have sunk so low over the past ten years, that even choosing a dozen would be a short-order job. Thirty minutes into it, my list had nearly 60 titles! After much cutting, pasting, and re-cutting and pasting, here are my top 20 films (in no particular order) of the first decade of the 21st century, dubbed by many as “the naughties.” --A.S.
1.No Country for Old Men (Coen Brothers, 2007) An elegiac blend of stark beauty and full-throttle despair from two of our finest filmmakers, set in the contemporary American West. Every frame is damn near flawless, and would have been an even more perfect vehicle for the late Sam Peckinpah.

A year after the 100-day writers strike, Writers Guild of America West President Patric Verrone took to the stage to celebrate achievements made following a February 2008 deal with the Alliance of Motion Pictures and Television Producers.
“This is our future, and we are embracing it,” Verrone told the congregation, citing a handful of projects written for the Internet. Last year’s ceremony was canceled due to the strike.
Dustin Lance Black won for his original screenplay, Milk, and Simon Beaufoy received the honor for best adapted screenplay, Slumdog Millionaire. The latter looks poised to win the “Best Picture” Oscar on February 22 after sweeping the awards for the Writers Guild, Screen Actors Guild, Producers Guild of America, Directors Guild of America, and the Golden Globes.

I knew that Woody Allen would eventually show up. One should never bet against him in the Screenplay races. Remarkably he'd been pretty absent up until now in the precursors. This lineup is bad news for both Jenny Lumet's Rachel Getting Married and Courtney Hunt's Frozen River which had been getting precursor attention. The Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) and the Writers Guild of America, West (Wgaw) and have offered up The Dark Knight as a legitimate contender for Best Adapted Screenplay by making it one of their five nominees in the category. On top of that my favorite film of the year, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, saw Woody Allen's screenplay nominated for original screenplay along with a few you may not have expected. As Ryan Adams at AwardsDaily points out, this is Woody's 19th WGA nom and could potentially lead to his 15th Best Screenplay Oscar nomination on top of his two Oscar wins. The complete lists for Original, Adapted and Documentary Screenplay noms are below. Winners will be honored at the 2009 Writers Guild Awards held on Saturday, February 7, 2009, at simultaneous ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles. The Writers Guild of America has announced their nominations for outstanding achievements in screen writing during 2008. The ceremonies will be held simultaneously in New York and Los Angeles on February 7, 2009.
It looks like the WGA was a little more careful this year and put the titles in alphabetical order. Last year the original list was in no particular order other than the obvious “most votes” to “least votes” ranking, which turned out to be true when the statues were awarded to Juno and No Country for Old Men.

Influential Republican operative and all-around evil genius Lee Atwater was a man of contradictions: In 1990, he released an album of classic R&B covers called Red Hot & Blue with help from Isaac Hayes, B.B, King, and Billy Preston, yet his deep love of African-American culture and music didn't keep him from making scowling black rapist/murderer Willie Horton a household name, cannily exploiting racism while running George H.W. Bush's successful 1988 presidential campaign. Stefan Forbes' conventional but absorbing documentary Boogie Man chronicles Atwater's meteoric rise from wisecracking Southern good ol' boy to top political consultant. Atwater emerges as a complex figure, a backstabbing Iago who plotted furtively against mentor Ed Rollins and taught the dark art of manipulating public opinion to protégé Karl Rove. At the height of his personal and professional success, Atwater was stricken with a fatal brain tumor that was treated with steroids, which in turn.

Stefan Forbes is a courageous documentarian that says what he believes and believes what he says. In his latest effort, Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story he sheds a microscopic light over the life of the Republican Party’s last rock star, Lee Atwater. While working on both the Reagan and Bush (the first one) campaigns, Atwater found ways to persuade an impressionable American public by using tactically fabricated realities to sway their vote. Though his methods were hardly admirable, they were powerful in the sense that the fables he concocted were not only believed by Americans, but completely accepted on a national level. Boogie Man reveals the web of lies surrounding Atwater’s systematic stranglehold on Washington for more than a decade, right up to his shocking demise. Forbes provides us with a...

"I think until Democrats take Lee Atwater seriously and study his playbook, they're going to have a hard time on the national level." That's what filmmaker Stefan Forbes told me in a telephone conversation on Thursday. Forbes's new documentary Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story (InterPositive Media) is set to open this weekend in Los Angeles and Columbia, S.C. The movie chronicles the life of brilliant Republican political consultant Lee Atwater who rose to power in the 1970s and 1980s and reached his pinnacle by masterminding President George H. W. Bush's defeat of Michael Dukakis in the 1988 presidential election. Soon after the victory, he was named chairman of the Republican National Committee, but he was tragically diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1990 and died in March of 1991.
