Despite the fact that the future has given you new, powerful, efficient machines that do everything for you, it's still important to keep fit and stay in shape. George Jetson is as unfit as they come, but he'll have to limber up and buckle down if he's gonna lead Spacely Sprocketts against Cogswell Cogs in an athletic championship, and you know he will since he never has a choice. So, after having to manually walk Astro and getting abused by the auto-dresser, George clocks in to work a second early and hits the console, just as Spacely introduces everybody to Laser Jack, a macho health guru who's looking for a company to build him some new athletic equipment. It was a toss up between Spacely and Cogswell. But all Mr. Spacely needed was a contestant for the competition, to whom he promised a very special prize. With all the other employees voting against this, Spacely simply hand picks George, despite his vehement protests, to be their contestant. George hates this idea because he doesn't want to get in shape, so he goes home to gripe about it, as Jane goes on and on about sweater patterns and Elroy and Judy enjoy 'Little House on the Planet', which is apparently a western shootout here, and what's more, the mechanical knitter goes haywire while knitting George's sweater. He curses the machine and Jane replies, "machines have feelings too, dear." ...Shut up, Jane; The next day, we see George get tortured by a stretching machine. But in a vain attempt to throw in the towel, he feigns injury. It works until Spacely brings in a personal physician to examine the bemoaning contender and diagnoses him with acute hypochondria. Back to the work out, George. Unfortunately, he's lousy at doing even simple exercises. His sit-ups send Elroy flying across the room, but luckily Astro catches him as it appears both of them are getting more exercise than Georgie Boy. He mustn't give up. When going to Lunar Park to jog one evening, he spies his competitor, Orville Krieger, who although appears to be a brawny, lumbering man is in fact a scrawny weakling underneath it all. Looks like George has got it made. He goes back to exercises and working out, giving it his all. With his family cheering him on and training from Laser Jack, George has got it in the bag.
The competition is on at Orbit Stadium. Cogswell appears the fool to have such a weakling for a contender, but knowing Mr. Cogswell like we all do, he's just bound to cheat his hiney off. Now according to rumors, Orville has a brother...and we can all guess what his name is, right? Well, as it turns out Orville's brother Wilbur...right... is the complete opposite of Orville. He's brawny, strong, and a real jerk. Ooh, this is gonna hurt; let the games begin! First, space slalom. George and "Orville" hit the slopes, but it's the slopes who end up hitting the former. Wilbur triumphs at pole vaulting, courtesy of Cogswell the cheater, so now the score is tied. George was in big trouble, so Elroy and Judy step in to lend dear old Dad a hand. Judy distracts Wilbur, leaving Cogswell with no choice but to put in Orville for the final competition, light sensor boxing. What a bright idea; Unfortunately, old George is still oblivious to Orville's twin and calls him a wimp, which causes him to get his lights punched out. Orville wins, Cogswell triumphs...until they expose his devious deeds, instantly disqualifying the cog-Meister and ruling Spacely Sprocketts the winner. Hurrah, hurrah! George is commended and given the special prize he was promised: a lifetime membership to any Laser Jack health club...cue muted trumpets.
This episode just falls flat. It isn't terrible, but it's nothing special. It's another Spacely vs. Cogswell story with George in the middle...again. I consider this part of an unofficial Jetsons sports trilogy, along with "Team Spirit" and "One Strike, You're Out", both of which were lousy too. Granted this episode had some good moments, the pole vaulting was cool, it was nice to see Judy and Elroy working together to help George, Little House on the Planet sounds like a smash, and we finally get to know Jane's sweater size. But anyway, "Winner Takes All"... not much to take; Why the repeated premise? Spacely and Cogswell can both go out and stuff it for all I care. Fans and non-fans, I'd say skip this one. Like George on the pole vault, it falls flat on it's ass.
