I think I’m finally beginning to understand James Gray‘s aesthetic with ‘The Lost City of Z‘. His classic nature, his fascination with these over-arching narratives. The first film of his that I saw was technically ‘We Own the Night‘ a forgettable but classic-in-approach New York City cop drama. I wasn’t much of a fan, and never quite got his appeal after that. He then did the interesting romantic-comedy-drama ‘Two Lovers‘ with Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow, which I liked a little more, but frankly, I mostly remember that movie now ’cause of it’s involvement in Joaquin Phoenix’s off-field actions as he was doing his crazed Andy Kaufman-esque performance art piece and trying to become a rapper-thing during the promotion of that film. I know some who really enjoyed it; I thought it was okay, but not special. Before that run, Gray had only two movies in the previous 12 years,...

One morning in 2012, Mindy Cohn’s life changed forever.
“I was walking around my neighborhood in Los Angeles and I suddenly got so tired,” says the actress best known for playing Natalie Green in the ’80s sitcom The Facts of Life. “I just couldn’t go anymore. Taylor Sheridan is going to go test-drive some horses. That is the exact phrase he's just used: The 47-year-old actor-turned-screenwriter-turned-director is in his car, heading to Spanish Fork, Utah, for the express purpose, he says, of taking a few thoroughbreds out for a spin like they were a couple of Ford Mustangs. "It's for a TV show I'm doing," he claims, referring to the forthcoming family drama Yellowstone he's prepping. "But yeah, I highly recommend before you buy any, maybe take 'em for a spin. You know that saying, 'You broke it,...

Glow may stand for Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, but for Britney Young, the Netflix series represents something different.
Born in Tokyo and raised in Alaska, the actress walked an untraditional path to Hollywood success (assuming there's such a thing as a traditional one). Though at the time she lived there there was only one English-speaking television program airing in Japan, Young says she was a natural-born performer, forcing her parents to put her in plays in Tokyo (her mom, a preschool teacher, put on many of her shows as a toddler), and gravitating toward her father's ‘80s movie collection for "research."
More: Alison Brie Talks Comedy Roles, 'Glow' and Mild Humiliations of Auditioning

This week Unearthed on Science Channel shines a light on the mysterious lost city of the Incas, Machu Picchu. After this time Machu Picchu was not rediscovered until 1911 when American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to a wide audience. The location is dramatic and theories abound...read more...

Starring sweet-as-candy teen pop star Mandy Moore and rising TV and film actor Shane West, the movie was an early entry in a long line of Sparks’ book-to-movie adaptations.
These romances follow a reasonably simple formula: take a heart-wrenching premise, add in some beautiful people and a stunning North Carolina-esque backdrop, be sure to incorporate some inspirational action that overcomes all adversity, and you are on the road to a Sparks success.

Gambling, and likely any other form of addiction, depends on either a heavy dose of delusion, the reckless hopefulness that despite the odds you’ll still come out on top, or a masochistic drive toward self-sabotage. Or else it’s a large helping of both. Mississippi Grind focuses on two individuals who share these characteristics in spades.
There’s Gerry, as portrayed by Ben Mendelsohn, who we meet listening to an audiobook detailing all the various tells that poker players may exhibit. The Angulo brothers spent their childhood locked away from the world, under the tyrannical rule of their father, unable to leave their New York City apartment. It sounds like something out of a fairy tale - or a horror film. But that is the true story told in a new documentary, The Wolfpack, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday. "Coming on the stage last night was extremely emotional," director Crystal Moselle told the audience after a screening of the film on Monday. "Afterward, they all cried and hugged. We all got very close through this process. How could you not be?...

Crystal Moselle’s documentary spotlights six snappily-dressed brothers who have only rarely left their Lower East Side apartment
There’s an old maxim about living in New York City: nobody knows their neighbours. The Wolfpack, a striking documentary from new film-maker Crystal Moselle, is just the thing to get people wondering what sociology experiments are happening in the apartment next door.
The six Angulo brothers (two of whom are twins) dress the same and all have long black hair. They and their (mostly off-screen) older sister are the children of Oscar and Susanne Angulo. The parents met when Susanne, midwestern hippy, went to Machu Picchu and fell in love with a new-agey tour guide. At the time, Oscar was into Krishna, and decided he wanted to breed, as his eldest calls it, “his own tribe”. When you begin exploring the work of director Werner Herzog some (if not most) will argue Aguirre, the Wrath of God is likely the best place to start. Though I don't think you get the full picture of this portion of Herzog's career without including Fitzcarraldo or the documentary My Best Fiend, which came another 12 years later, detailing Herzog's work with Aguirre star Klaus Kinski. Without Kinski, Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo and, most likely, Herzog would not be the same. With that in mind, know this is the first review in a coming triptych, meant to build off one another to the point an entire picture begins to form. History, in this case, cannot be ignored. Considered an entry in the West German New Wave, Aguirre is very loosely based on the accounts of Spanish Dominican monk Gaspar de Carvajal (played in the film by Del Negro) as well as the life...

The Voyage Of The Damned is a solid instalment for Da Vinci's Demons, despite lacking in focus...
This review contains spoilers.
2.3 The Voyage Of The Damned
One of the little pleasures of Da Vinci's Demons is the way the show works Da Vinci's actual achievements into the show. From his invention of the Gatling-style machine gun to his testing of flying wings in the very early stages of the first season, when the show brings one of Da Vinci's mad inventions to the screen, it usually is one of the coolest aspects of the episode. During this episode, we get a prolonged genesis and creation of one of Leonardo's most interesting creations: the submarine.

Last September, Den Of Geek had a day out in South Wales to visit the impressive Da Vinci’s Demons set. Here’s what we learned…
Driving through Port Talbot’s rolling green countryside on a sunny September morning, the first hint of anything out of the ordinary was the sight of two fully garbed, bewigged Ottoman Janissaries leading their horses into a car park.
As we alighted the minibus, more fifteenth century Turks came into view, one reading the paper on a sunny verge, another texting in the shade of a double decker coach, a hatless, wigless queue forming at the catering van…
Led down a leafy sylvan path, the soil underfoot gradually turning into sand, we emerged blinking into the light of a steep golden dune. Dotted around the hillside were military banners, decorative earthenware pots, iron braziers, straw-stuffed training dummies, and a draped Ottoman tent,...

Nicholas Bell: Name me three of your favorite “2013 discoveries”…
Mauricio Zacharias: Machu Picchu and Pre-Columbian architecture. Brazilian film “O Som Ao Redor” (Neighboring Sounds), about the fears, anxieties and resentments of the new Brazilian middle class. Mad Men season 6 – this TV series keeps inspiring me to explain less, and write more.
Bell: How does your collaboration with the director of your screenplay influence the finished script? For instance, after having written two features for Karim Ainouz and, now, two for Ira Sachs, what changed after the first collaboration that may have made the next project easier (or more difficult?)
Zacharias: Each director has a different approach to collaborating on a script. Some are very hands on, others don’t even want to see any pages until the draft is done. After having collaborated with several directors from different nationalities, I believe that spending time before any word is...

Ever wondered what compels people to go after such odd accomplishments as World's Largest Hula Hoop or Longest Duration Balancing a Lawnmower on Chin? The acclaimed short documentary "The Record Breaker" introduces the audience Ashrita Furman, a health food store manager in Queens who has amassed over 350 Guinness book records over the past three decades. The 24-minute film, which garnered the Vimeo Audience Award at this year's Full Frame Documentary Film Festival as well as the jury prize at Palm Springs International ShortFest, traces Furman's life and follows him as he sets out on a bizarre, potentially unperformed task: climbing Machu Picchu on stilts. And the film has just been made available online for free via Vimeo: The Record Breaker from Brian McGinn on Vimeo.

★★★★★ What defines a bona fide cult classic? Is it its bold, inimitable style? It's army of loyal devotees, perhaps? Or is it its unconventional approach to the cinematic form as a whole? Whichever of the aforementioned attributes floats your monkey-infested raft, Bavarian director Werner Herzog's 1972 effort Aguirre, the Wrath of God more than meets the criteria. A firm favourite among critics, filmmakers and arthouse admirers the world over, Herzog's existentialist trek through the perilous Amazon rainforest helped to herald in the era of New German Expression and also introduced wildman Klaus Kinski to dumbstruck audiences.
Now newly restored and returning to selected cinemas in June of this year courtesy of the British Film Institute, Herzog's third feature stars the incomparable Kinski - once described by Herzog as "probably the most difficult actor in the world to deal with" - as the titular Don Lope de Aguirre, a power-crazed conquistador...
