Ponch's partner in Mister Dixon's class
dtucker866 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Roy Hemmings takes over Pete's class for a week while he attends a teacher conference and to say he makes a dramatic entrance is the understatement of the year. He comes to class dressed and in character as Benjamin Franklin and he goes to Alice's English class dressed as William Shakespeare as the two of them perform a scene from Romeo and Juliet together. He is the kind of substitute that makes learning fun but you don't technically learn (he throws away Pete's lesson plan). Pete confronts him about a student that really needs his help (played by a pre "CHIPs" Larry Wilcox) and force hi to admit he is nothing but a play actor who doesn't want to seriously buckle down and teach.

The Unconventional Substitute

A substitute teacher Mr Hemmings entertains the students with his costumes and humor.

An entertaining Season 3 episode. Hemmings is played by Ben Cooper, who played youths in classic films like "Johnny Guitar" and "The Rose Tattoo". He has a great first scene as he enters the class dressed as Ben Franklin. He also imitates WC Fields and tries to get a date with Miss Johnson. Larry Wilcox (later on CHIPS) plays a student who needs some tutoring.
