. . . on a Sunday morning in Ataples, France, inspired the long KISS of NOTORIOUS! "Romance must not be interrupted, even by urinating," NOTORIOUS! director Alfred Hitchcock says in a Feb. 12, 1963, archival audio interview included here in THE ULTIMATE ROMANCE--THE MAKING OF NOTORIOUS!, remembering the girl-assisted leak he watched from a distance about 40 years earlier as if it had happened yesterday. Now it's more than 90 years since that particular draining of one specific lizard, but polls continue to place the kiss inspired by this public whiz among the greatest in cinematic history. However, by the time that this tinkle was transmuted into Hollywood gold, said Tinkler could have been killed by War, by lightning, or even by the "girl" who'd once so brazenly offered her hand. Further, even IF Mr. P. were alive and kicking when NOTORIOUS! hit the Big Screen, and even IF he were the movie-going type and saw it, and even IF 1946 film censors had allowed Hitch to reenact this romantic pee as he witnessed it, more likely than not the "boy" in question would not recognize it as a personal experience. He may well have been drunk with an urgent need to go at the moment he inspired Great Art, relieving himself against the red brick wall brightly lit by the rising sun one Sunday morning after drinking all night long Saturday. Still, you can say Hitchcock, with NOTORIOUS!, won one for the Dripper!
