The riddle of dyslexia
dtucker862 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is a REALLY pioneering episode of Room 222 that tackled a subject that at the time probably not one person in a thousand had heard of, the subject of dyslexia. George Patton, Tom Cruise, Muhammad Ali and even Albert Eisntein suffered from this mysterious malady that causes one to see letters backwards. Alice Johnson is the heroine of this little drama as she takes under her compassionate wing a student named Otis a foster child for whom the only easy day in life has been yesterday. Like many troubled students he plays the class clown and then gets violent with a remedial teacher he feels is patronizing him. In the end he is correctly diagnosed and gets the help he needs.

Miss Johnson takes new student Otis in her creative writing class.

A good Season 4 episode. Otis was a foster child and he reads only at a 4th grade level. Alice thinks he has great imagination and humor. He gets angry if any tells him to try to read better. This may be the first time the word "dyslexia" was used on a TV sitcom.
