I like the story with the psycho girl.
Sjoerdkromkamp8 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Didn't like the woke stuff.

But the story arch with the girl who is a psychopath is really good. Looking at the the chess piece and saying "yes she is my friend"

Bad beginning but sound ending
jamitol18 April 2021
This episode was poor to say the least at the beginning. But, EVENTUALLY came to a point if understanding. Although a bit too political fpr my taste, it makes sense with our society's current situation.

Wandered So Much What Happened and.. Thank God.
alpber18 April 2021
I started watching the show only a month ago. I work in HR and "how can I help" approach is a very good example of servant-leadership. It's inspiring even if my business have nothing to do with healthcare and even if as all movie-making, evey technical detail is not accurate considering normal flow of life and sector. If drama and scenario writing was not included, believe me you did not even glare a second. Watch how movies are made in "The Invention of Lying". Anyhow, I was not there for technical objections.

I was there because I did not want to believe such a great show, even risking to drive into "our new normal" unlike the majority, just messed it up. What I watched was relying on discrimination, especially about races. And I really wished IMDB to rebalance their evaluation system so that this show's handling the discrimination subject will not be confused with Game of Thrones like, Dexter like and Boardwalk Empire like messing up the whole.

I cannot say that every oppinion, every course that characters go is exactly the way it's supposed to be. But I have hope that it will find its way and there's time for it. For political botherers, your wishes for the show to be non-politic is like me wishing you never express your so-I*call "stupid ideas" around. But I try not to be a tyrant, a discriminator, a bully, etc. We are complete when every oppinion, idea finds its way to be expressed, limited with ethics and law. And these can change on time, look only a year ago which things were appropriate to do and look today which things are not. And maybe if humanity succeeds to overcome Covid and variants, in a few years, what seems mandatory today will look meaningless.

I want this show to express its oppinions on social matters, that's what makes this show great. But producers of the show must know that once they start to give judgments about controversial issues, it will become a problem. So far, I see conclusions where people accept involuntarily but also live with it. Or walk away from what they do not want in their lives. As long as different judgments are made by different characters, it won't affect the show's progress. But if we started seeing that every major character accept one of the choices in a controversial situation one day, I think it would be the moment that the show is supposed to end.

Emma Hong
mradarley-4766111 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Emma Hong is going to be a phenomenal actress, her performance twice now as a child psychopath is genuinely terrifying. Anyone who understands psychopathy will recognise how well constructed her performance is. Remember her name she will be a big star.

What the heck was that?
Dog-River8 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I know the real world is messed up, but I just want to watch tv to get away from life's problems. It's ok to add a storyline into an episode, with other stories as well, but this was the majority of the episode. The writing was just bad and the episode was so boring. Not for one minute am I going to believe that Max would ever ignore a doctor for 2-3 years that was asking for help. On another issue, I knew they weren't going to have Helen and Dr. Shin together forever, but the way it ended made no sense. I hope the rest of the season has better writing, because this was definitely not a good episode.

All the 1 star reviewers are showing their true colors. These issues are important. If it makes you uncomfortable, good. This is the world we live in. If you want to bury your head in the sand because the show is too "woke" or "preachy" then by all means, stop watching. I'm sure you can fall back on Duck Dynasty and feel like you're apart of the majority again.

If you gave it 1 star, you were not listening !
hftkwm8 April 2021
Majority of people here reviewed this episode with 1 star saying : I want to watch a medical drama, not the news. Well guess what, racism is a medical issue and a major one. If you bothered watching the show with an open mind you would understand.

Trying too hard

Warning: Spoilers
Max came across as a dunce in this episode, like a Dr with his responsibilities would have time to paint a message on a floor. And why are doctors not wearing masks in the building but then putting them on outside? Senseless!

Very relevant and well done. Be proud of your work.
ROBSMST7 April 2021
If you work somewhere where your company is actively trying to improve diversity and inclusion and improve the impacts of systemic racism, you will really appreciate this episode. In a short amount of screen time it displays many different point of views and what people are experiencing. The people that just want to be entertained with a medical drama don't realize that this is what many hospitals and companies are experiencing. It is extremely relevant to our times.

Seriously
mfeierskov29 June 2021
The show didn't go heavy enough on the social justice already? There is like one straight white guy on the cast and every single other person is gay, overweight, trans, black, middle eastern, a little person, latino etc.

And then they make an entire episode of Max running around with his crying face getting critized for trying to help.

These are literally supposed to be like the 1% of income in the world, and they are whining about allies and wage gaps. How tone-deaf do you have to be to make something like this...

More Juliet Please
ebnc10 September 2021
I admit this episode was a little boring only because you have to be deaf, dumb, and blind not to know systemic racism exists in the United States. The U. S. was built on it, but I don't want to watch it on New Amsterdam because it won't change anything. The change that needs to happen occurs off the set, but nice try. Anyway, I watch New Amsterdam to see a medical drama and interesting stories like the one about the character, Juliet.

Hard to watch, too preachy
repete5210 April 2021
The last several (or more) episodes have been hard to watch, only did so cuz spouse wanted to see what's going on. The preachiness about current social issues is too much. Instead of pretending the characters are having conversations with other characters with their preachy messages, they should just stare at the camera/screen and lay their homilies directly on the audience. It would be more realistic.

Freema Agyeman is the best consistent actor on this show. But the ridiculous situation they put her character in, involving her sibling in the Middle East...just bizarre. Giving up her personal life and various professional situations to "reconnect" with a spoiled, demanding, entitled brat...just crazy. Freema's acting skills come thru despite the lack of overall quality directing. There are many (potentially) good actors on this show who could be doing better, with better Directing, Writing, and Storyline; in that order. A better director would be able to get more from these actors. If my wife does watch another episode, AND tells me that things have greatly improved, I may resume watching this series. If not, which doesn't seem likely, I'm done with this show. Too many other good things to watch. Many of them British or Australian.

Continues to be the best series ever!
jem888822 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I think this is the best (primetime drama-type) series ever, having watched a lot of medical, law, fire rescue, law enforcement, etc., shows--and this episode, as a whole, is another bolstering reason why.

All because New Amsterdam has such heart, dusted with humor among the gravity (and I love the quirky music). It doesn't dig up every opportunity to shock you, and I've found so much original in it. I consider this episode one of its defining, hallmark episodes, much like S1Ep10, "Six or Seven Minutes" (I'll updt this, if it's not the one I meant), covering a lot of territory--and it's all relevant. This show is all about moral issues and not having all the answers, yet still trying your very best to surf--or fumble--through! Helping as many as possible along the way. What makes this one so special in being dissed? Is it hitting a lot of people's sore spots or sensitive areas or--*gasp*--unknown privilege? Max explains exactly why each photo is coming down, although, yes, the whole wall coming down is extreme (dramatic). Maybe a wall of simple portraits could be put up, but those ones in lab settings deserved to be taken down, as I heard each reason. (At the time, I thought they should go to another place--if not suitable for a museum, then perhaps a history room within the hospital itself. Just a thought, wasn't expecting actual storyline on it.)

Then, there's the Superman story for the big hit to the heart.

ER was all about shock value, Grey's Anatomy was often a soap opera. I find this series just full of heart and humanity; and "Why Not Yesterday" is one of my top 2 most heartfelt episodes, 3 most memorable--so far! Emma Hong gave a chilling performance as juvenile psychopath, Juliette, in S2Ep5, "The Karman Line," and happens to revive her role in this episode, as well!

This was a great episode!

Some good, lots of bad.
josephrennie14 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The story arc with the psychopath girl was great. So glad she is a recurring character.

The politics however is starting to get boring. I've just about finished this season and almost every episode is related to racism or some other social issue. Having an episode or two like that is normal, but at some point it gets pretty heavy handed. Some are done better than others, there is an episode relating to gay injustice and the blood banks which I found pretty good. But on the other hand, there are some pretty awful and shallow ones.

Season 1 and 2 had an alright amount of politics, season 3 is more political noise than medical drama.

AMAZING - episode, love the connection to CURRENT EVENTS!!!!
Teebern11 April 2021
I've been a FAN of Ryan Eggold since his Blacklister days, but he has evolved into such a dynamic actor! Seeing all the OUTRAGE (LMAO) at this episode & illustrating systemic RACISM means it did exactly what it was meant to do. Keep crying, 58% of the country is HAPPY! This episode was SO good, my Mom has become a fan and binged the rest of the season to get caught up for this week!! Keep it up, NA writers!!!

Politics in entertainment is not entertaining!!!
brennansmomma5 July 2022
The series has been preachy for a while now but this is over the top. How many social issues can a writer cram into 43 minutes.....gosh, let me count them. Max is mirroring the insane ways of NOT making a difference. If you tear down monuments or take pictures off of the wall, it still doesn't change history. Teach it, show the kids the pictures and monuments and use it as a teaching tool. By doing anything else, it's about making you feel better, not about making the world better.

I care about social issues but that is not what I want to see in my entertainment. My prediction - the series will go the way of the others that have used their great entertainment as an avenue to preach social justice. If something doesn't change, this series is on its last leg.

Do not end with a positive and show previews of the following week with a negative
stevenobles23 September 2021
The premier started great..ended uplifting...one of my favorite shows..had a few tears because Sharpe is gorgeous and they look good together..then the previews for next week are mostly negative which takes away from what they wanted to accomplish at the end of the show. Now positive went to negative..now a show that was uplifting is now not so much for the next 7 days in the world we now live in..leave it as it is and do not show previews of the next show.

Experience the television version of nausea
polite-4569222 September 2021
Experience the television version of nausea while watching this episode. It is as bad as other reviews have stated. It seems there is a concerted effort by the producers to sabotage the show and/or to make it into a parody.

On this date, the IMDB rating was 6.0, which does not seem possible considering the reviews.

A Very Misguided Episode!
reviewer323 May 2021
I tape the shows that I watch in order to see them on my schedule and to fast forward thru the frequent multiple commercials.

I finally got around to watching this episode (Season "Why Not Yesterday" aired 4/6/21) recently and was beyond disappointed.

I thought that I was going to watch a medical drama but instead was bombarded with the writer and director's over-the-top attempts to educate viewers on "systemic" racism.

Lead actor Ryan Eggold's performance came off as offensive as he over-acted trying to convince an audience of the writers and director's political viewpoints.

New Amsterdam should stick to being a medical drama (this includes a subsequent episode on gender "inequality") or risk losing your core audience.

Boring
mantrhax18 April 2021
Boring, repetitive, the path is wrong, it's not forcing people to swallow this new reality that it's going to happen, it just creates more antipathy. That's why it never works. That's not the way. TV shows must be entertainment, when it's not, it's gone.

NO MORE!!!
debb-3491812 April 2021
I've enjoyed this series until this episode. If this is the way it's gonna be from here on I will definitely stop watching. I get enough about racism on the news every time I turn on the TV and every commercial. I am so over at all.

Hell, I might stop watching TV altogether. I am so tired of having this shoved down my throat.

This is what happens when politics gets mixed with Hollywood
pedro-9779715 April 2021
Leave trends and political campaigns out of these shows, your viewers want "out" of the real world to enter a new one, with a story that has a beginning, middle and an end. Period!

Forcing down Covid, Racism, Gender Opression and completely forgetting about the main story is throwing a huge middle finger to your viewers.

I almost feel compelled to say im sorry for beeing white! Should i?
