Good acting even better soundtrack
cdecrescenzo26 August 2021
Wasn't impressed with the first episode but this one got my attention. The acting was much better and the storyline got a lil more interesting. But bravo to whoever made this soundtrack on this episode.

Excellence.
corinneppierson26 August 2021
The second episode of the premiere gave the series a more authentic feeling through the general focus on the plot rather than the introductions of new characters and establishment of moodiness in the setting.

Seeing Wittrock's performance in this crushing role makes one feel like they're watching a modernized (and albeit less criminally insane) Dandy Mott work his way through several internal and external conflicts and become a character truly worth the extra effort worked into him. Hats off to Wittrock for a stellar performance once again. Incredible.

Lily Rabe's Doris Gardener shines within this addition with the added conflict between her, her daughter, and husband. The layers to Rabe's character and the humility present makes her feel like the only sane character who truly deserves explanations for all that had been pushed upon her in the few feeble days within the episodes. You feel for Doris Gardener and you feel for Harry and Alma as well.

Each role is perfectly casted and each performance is another level on top of the mountain of praises I wish to sing to every actor within it.

What a start...
landerdevos26 August 2021
This episode adds some layers to the characters. I feel a great connection with Doris especially. Sarah Paulson also steals the show as TB Karen.

The show reinvented itself again. Gone is the campiness that was a little too much in previous seasons. The tone has not been this serious since Asylum. The cinematography just feels expensive. We had to wait two years for this new season. It was worth it. I am hoping that the season continues to be as great as these last two episodes. I am hooked. Bring it on, AHS!

WOW The acting, Writting and Directing is just so good
harry-3451826 August 2021
This epsiode is just so good and so intresting as the story of this season devolps creating an amazing mystery. The writting is toop notch and some of the lines are just so well written. The shots here are amazing theres a great one where it turns from night to day around Finn Witrocks character. Lily Rabe is great aswell as Ryan Keira. Sarah Paulson does such a good job as a town Crazy. Billie Lord is great however I am worried about how much more of the season she is going to be in as most of what we've seen of her in advertising is in this episode and I love the character. Leslie grossman is amazing however I do feel she is being held back by the role as she has so much potential. Overall I Would argue this is one of AHS's best episodes and this season will rival for one of the best.

Wardrobe is Hilarious.

Warning: Spoilers
I'm really happy AHS is back, it's like a few odes to random (but connected) culture. I feel a little Shining with a nod to Salem's Lot...which is awesome, I think.

I do have to say tho...who outfits the tweakers? Those coats are just insane with the shoulder pads. I know they are supposed to be scary but I'm more concerned about milky eye than the Shoulder Pad Posse.

For the first two hours, they sure packed in a LOT. I'm happy and grateful, AHStories were kind of a let down, but that's Ok. Thoroughly enjoying this and very interested in where ALL this will go. Again, it's the best thing about this show, all the sub-stories, history, etc. Hotel was my favorite season, mostly for the Music and the Magic.

Couldn't believe they were playing At the River, it's been forever since I heard that (by Groove Armada, I wish they played that version).

I love this episode and season so far, episode one was good, and now this, is one of the best AHS episodes I've ever seen. Loved every moment and the general idea for 'Red Tide' is very strong.

Not sure about this season yet...
Yvie819 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure about this season yet. It all seems a bit too predictable. Like you take the pills and you become hooked and become a vampire to satisfy your 'lifes needs' or whatever in turn for creativity. Except when you're not talented, then you turn into some meat eating/blood drinking vampire/zombie kind of creature. The thing is, with AHS I'm always kind of hoping for some shocking and surprising elements. I haven't seen anything like that just yet! If I want to see some meat eating zombies, I'd rather watch The Walking Dead. These zombies/vampires also act and look way too over the top to even remotely be scary to me. Plus we've already had a vampire themed season with AHS Hotel, except eternal youth now seems to have been replaced with eternal creativity.. Anyway, I'm hoping there'll be some more original plot twists to come!

On another note: I'm very happy to see Macaulay Culkin in a big acting role again after all that he's been through!

Even better than the premiere due to impeccable acting
hnt_dnl28 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
PALE wastes no time in jumping right into it's pseudo-vampire story with the Gardner trio quickly morphing into the Torrances a la The Shining. Harry has become addicted to the black pills and is obsessed with finishing his Pilot to the point of lashing out at his wife and daughter, while Alma herself secretly takes a pill in order to perfect her violin piece and Doris plays mediator in trying to talk Harry down while disciplining Alma. Meanwhile, Harry goes to even deeper lengths in feeding his newfound ideas by going on a killing spree with Austin and Belle to replace his body's nutrients that are being drained by taking the pills. To make the feeding of human flesh go easier, Harry gets special dentures from the Dentist Lark (a cheeky Billie Lourd in her first appearance of the season). Also, Karen and Mickey bond in a really funny and oddly heartwarming scene as they each contemplate taking the pills to set themselves on a path to success.

The performances in this episode are superb. Finn Whitrock nails Harry's descent into addiction and madness. Lily Rabe is rock solid as Doris, the loving wife and mother losing control of her family. Ryan Kiera Armstrong is a revelation as the wise-beyond-her-years Alma and in particular, the scene where she burns Doris as an "ordinary" person was hard to pull off for a 9-year old and the young actress really hit it out of the park. Evan Peters chews scenery in the best way as Austin. Frances Conroy is witty as the lethal, bloodthirsty Belle. MacCauley Culkin is perfectly cast as the struggling Mickey and his rant on TV and film was hilarious in a way that only Culkin could deliver those lines. Leslie Grossman as Harry's agent does a good job playing her typical fast-talking eternally sarcastic character. But the best performance of the episode probably goes to Sarah Paulson as the tragic yet strangely lovable Tuberculosis Karen, ironically the most self-aware character of the series so far. The actors are helped by dialogue that straddles the line between horror, camp, comedy, and tragedy. Brilliant episode.

Is this the same show???
kikilangmore31927 August 2021
I haven't been this impressed by a season of AHS since asylum. After a good few years of mediocre and campy seasons (not without their cult followings), we get a gripping season with a distinct atmosphere and a very different formula. You might even find yourself forgetting it's American horror story, and not a new HBO frontrunning thriller with a massive budget.

After watching a very little bit of American Horror Stories (not AHS) , I got nervous for this season. However, the soundtrack, cinematography, and casting are above anything in the show's recent past.

At this point, I can only comment on the first two episodes; but, I am already more intrigued/invested in this season than I was for any other recent season. The direction is incredible, even masterful at times. Given that this season has less overall episodes, and includes another separate story, the shorter runtime of Red Tide (6 episodes) could allow it to build and maintain momentum until the end. If done right, it could find itself as one of the better seasons in AHS history. They have me eagerly waiting for next weeks episode for sure.

Great BUT VERY VERY LOUD!
cwade223 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The concept is great! But the music and Extremely loud Sounds are way too loud! I turn volume up to 12 and can barely hear the talking! Then something happens and BAM! Sounds are 10 times louder than the talking! My neighbors are mad at me and it's 3am! What idiot thought it was great to make dumb loud "jump scares" with the noises?! Unnecessary! I shouldnt have to adjust the damn volume 100 times an episode because the idiot creators editors or whomever wanted loud noises/effects/music to be so damn loud! I was rating this 9/10 but im dropping it because it's so annoying to watch with the loud noises/music! And alma playing the violin! NO! String instruments are way too loud! This applies to every episode of this season as im watching the 3rd and wow! SO DAMN LOUD but the talking is so damn low! I hate that! Rating this a 6/10 because of that factor.

Her shtick is getting so tired. The same annoying character in everything she does. It is ludicrous. People who act like that in real life get smacked.

AMAZING!!!!!
mefecig25 August 2021
After the American Horror Stories disaster, I was nervous that Ryan Murphy may ruin AHS as well; but contrary to my prejudice it was well-written and perfectly acted. It is nice to see all of the actors and actresses who I hoped to see in American Horror Stories appear in their new roles. They all played their lines perfectly to immerse the audience completely into the beginning of a whole new masterpiece. Both the directors and the cast is on fire and I am looking forward to watching the next episode.

The connections and continuations to the previous chapters are amazing. Ryan totally did it this time... It would have been nicer to see a few more aspects of horror tho

Also, the character of Finn Wittrock is absolutely amazing owing to the amazing performance by the actor. I am totally in love with it. Also Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters are amazing amazinnng actors... Would have been better if Darren Criss acted in this tho. His Filipino accent is amazing.

A Tour de Force
JoshuaMercott27 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There was little to nothing wrong with the manner in which the much-anticipated season 10 of "American Horror Story" began. Its 'double feature' was a huge risk... If people hated the first one, even the first half of the first one, will they even bother to see the second episode, let alone the rest of the show?

In the case of episode 1 "Cape Fear" and episode 2 "Pale" on Hulu, the answer is a haunting and resounding 'YES!'. Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk - the show's writers and creators - most definitely brought their A-game.

I was personally concerned about this season, but now that it's here - with its much welcome and familiar AHS alumni - I was ecstatic from start to finish, soaking up the sheer Stephen-King-esque horror vibes and classic AHS tropes that thoroughly entertained, captivated, terrified, and discomfited from the first minute to the last. Some curious Lovecraftian elements were present as well, but what in the horror genre doesn't, I ask you - that writer was and still is a legend in the craft.

John J. Gray was given the huge responsibility of directing episode 1 of season 10 "American Horror Story", and he certainly did an ace job. Instead of cleverly avoiding clichés and familiar ground, the man steered the first episode straight across forbidden country and raised all the right dust clouds. Following in the rich horror-ific footsteps of this epi came the second one, directed by Loni Peristere, who only took things up a notch, if not several.

Both episodes were assuredly powerful and significant ways to start a show that is in its tenth season.

The cast... This, by itself, did its bit to pump up season 10's fan-value. I mean, look at them! Evan Peters as Austin, Lily Rabe as Doris Gardner, Leslie Grossman as Ursula, Frances Conroy as Belle Noir, Finn Wittrock as Harry Gardner, Sarah Paulson as TB Karen, Adina Porter as Chief Burleson, Billie (frikkin') Lourd as Lark (I love her!), and Macaulay (dang) Culkin as Mickey (he ain't alone in this home, that's for sure). Special shout-out to Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Alma Gardner.

It was scripting success from start to finish, and casting excellence all the way. Mac Quayle's musical scoring and Andrew Mitchell's cinematography beautifully complemented Chloe Arbiture's production design, Jonathan Bell's art direction, Brandi Kalish's set decoration, and everything the rest of the crew brought to this double feature, including the costume and wardrobe department.

The whole of season 10 is divided neatly into two parts. The first one is titled "Red Tide" and contains episodes 1-6. The second one is labelled "Death Valley" and packs the rest of the episodes from 7-10. The words 'Double Feature' apply to the season itself, not just the first two episodes they released by way of welcome. As of now, only episodes one and two have aired, with the rest on the way.

With S10E01 and S10E02 of "American Horror Story", the creators and company transcended ordinary television viewing and took things to a cinematic level. These episodes weren't unduly extravagant or flashy, and that's what made them work. They were elegant and simple, words not usually associated with the horror genre. Both epis blended drama (and similar elements) to create a sort of balance that worked wonders on season 10's beginning-behalf. The plotline in both episodes remained true to the dictum: 'Not a penny more, not a penny less'.

Having been with the "AHS" franchise from the get-go, I can honestly say I have never felt more relieved, more satisfied, more shook, and more entertained to watch Murphy and Falchuk do justice at this juncture in the seasonal lineup. This 'double feature' for their S10 was a winning start to a thrilling all-new season of "AHS" filled with all the right chills. And don't get me started on that unsettling cliffhanger ending!

Emmy for Ryan Murphy!!!
yzsnfcg26 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Lily Rabe and Finn Wittrock are amazing this season finally getting a main lead in the show; loved how the whole family are all struggling in different ways, and Lily Rabe again just always knows the part so well! Very reminiscent of Hitchcock's rear window from the intensity and estranged eerie feeling. Ryan Murphy is having fun like it's back at season 1 of murder house and it's amazing!

Thrilled
alicej-1370627 August 2021
I am genuinely blown away. Even without the GOAT, Jessica Lange, this season is brilliant. I liked this episode better than the first as the acting from everyone was just first class. I am so happy to see original returning actors, as well as the newer ones from previous seasons, it just feels so great to have this cast together again!! Ryan Murphy you are a genius!! I swear you are a user of those black pills ;)

The Muse
gedikreverdi27 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
If you take the Muse the black pill, then you become a lot more talented at whatever you're talented but if you have no talent whatsoever, then you end up being one of those in the streets that chased the Gardners. The three writers drove to kill a thieving man in his house and the scene looked really good with the beautiful car and iconic Francis Conroy. The Gardners seem to have ended up taking the pill at the end. The homeless woman Karen and her bestie Mickey (Macaulay) consider taking it too but she has some reservations because she finds it scary to be like Belle Noire having to kill all the time for success. But Mickey took it too to become a successful writer. I really enjoyed the first two episodes but I'm also expecting to see some twists and turns.

Hum.. what
kuroael28 August 2021
Have we seen the same thing ? It's tired, predictable, filled with overdone tropes and devices, you can literally predict everything that's gonna happen ten minutes before it does. It certainly looks good but that's about it. What a bore.

Sucked In!
QuadeC201027 August 2021
American Horror Story started off as being one of my favorite shows of all time, but by the time Freak Show rolled around, I found seasons 4-7 to be very underwhelming. Starting with season 8, I've noticed that it has improved a ton!

I have to say, based on these first two episodes, this has the potential to be the best season yet! The atmosphere stays creepy, the actors are amazing, the pacing is perfect, and the music is fitting in every scene.

I pretty much predicted the ending of the second episode, but it was still executed perfectly. The final shot has me completely invested to see where this is going to go. It brings up so many topics and ethics we need to really think on sometimes.

The last time the show has been this good was Asylum, and honestly, this is an even better beginning than that season. Color me hyped for the new season. Despite the slump seasons in the middle of the series, it seems AHS is back and better than ever! It's about time. Maybe they needed the extra time off to really get this right. If you've fallen off the bandwagon over the years, maybe it's time to tune back in.

Did you all notice when Doris got mad and typed random words on the laptop, Harry didn't delete them, and he started typing again?

By the way, the music was soooooooooooooo good.

I loved this episode.

Builds well off the first episode, develops the story more
awessel-5811731 August 2021
I like this one almost as much as the first episode. It maintains my interest and keeps me on the edge of my seat to see what's next. Though I will say there were moments in this episode that greatly reminded me of Hotel due to the posh upper class feeling some of the characters portray through their elitist attitude.
