Not to, to bad... a pretty decent watch.
DeviantHitman18 October 2014
Had kind of a Teen Wolf meets The Lost Boys kind of thing going on.

I liked the fact that there was no CGI used it was all special effects and makeup, which was a nice break from todays excessive use of CGI. It's kind of what had me sold on it to be honest, the effort put into the costumes. You can see by the pictures they put a lot into the work on the wolves.

I think Angelica and Cayden looked pretty sweet as wolves, They looked about as real as a human/wolf could look, certainly looked better than Jack Nicholson's Wolf.

Yeah the acting wasn't spectacular, but really, when it comes to these kind of lower budget films.. It definitely isn't Underworld in that aspect but still it was a good little weekend special.

Low Budget Werewolf Flick that Entertained.
aussiefox23 December 2014
Looking for blockbuster CG effects? this ain't it. Your sure to be disappointed. However if your looking for something better then reality TV and Sharknado? Then this is a well done little movie, with some decent talent, although i wouldn't say the dialog or acting is Oscar worthy, The movie entertained me, i enjoyed it and most of the time that is exactly what i ask of my movies, allow me to escape to forget about my worries and dramas and enjoy some entertainment.

Looking for a decent quality movie without the hype? this is it. Some decent plot twists, kept me engrossed throughout. I would recommend it for ages over 10. Biggest surprise i can't recall any f bombs ... hmmm maybe i'm just desensitized to it these days.

Better than Average Werewolf Movie
Man9920420 October 2016
This is a better than average Werewolf movie. For a fairly low budget film, the quality is surprisingly high. The special effects are also much better than you would expect from this type of movie.

Jason Momoa is especially well cast as the head of the "Wolf Pack". He has the looks and the sheer physical presence to pull off this kind of role.

Far less successful is Lucas Till.At this point in his career, he simply does not have the experience to carry an entire movie. He comes across like a bland "Ken Doll", than a character with a dark secret in his past.

The script has a "been there done that" aspect to it. It steals elements from any number of previous movie sin this genre. Do not expect anything even remotely new or innovative here.

If you like werewolf movies, this one is worth your while to watch.

Highly Entertaining Adventure
claudio_carvalho11 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The teenager Cayden Richards (Lucas Till) lives in a small town with his parents Dean Richards (Stephen Sparks) and Janice Richards (Jennifer Hale) and is having violent nightmares. He is the quarterback of the local football team and his girlfriend Lisa Stewart (Kaitlyn Leeb) is a cheerleader. After a game, Lisa decides to have sex with Cayden for the first time in the car. However he transforms into a monster and she flees from him. He goes home and finds his parents murdered. He leaves town hitchhiking while he is wanted by the police and he learns that his parents were actually stepparents.

Cayden decides to find his origins and helps a prostitute at a truck stop that is assaulted by two men. Then he steals the motorcycle of one of the men and later he stops at a bar where he meets the weird Wild Joe (John Pyper-Ferguson). The stranger identifies that Cayden is a wolf and gives the direction to Lupine Ridge. Cayden arrives in a bar owned by the teenagers Angelina "Angel" Timmins (Merritt Patterson) and Gail Timmins (Melanie Scrofano) and he asks for a job, telling that his name is Danny. However he is not welcomed by the locals and he leaves the bar. But a man called John Tollerman (Stephen McHattie) hires him to work in his farm where he lives with his wife Clara Tollerman (Janet- Laine Green). Soon Cayden learns that John is his uncle and his mother was raped by the local leader Connor (Jason Momoa). He also finds that he is a pure town wolf together with John, Angeline, Gail and two other inhabitants. Connor is also pure, but has formed a pack of impure wolves and has a pact with the inhabitants to leave them in peace. But he is getting old and wants to have a baby with Angelina as part of the deal. But the problem is, Cayden and Angelina has fallen in love for each other and Cayden intends to stop Connor.

"Wolves" is an entertaining adventure underrated in IMDb maybe because it is indicating the horror genre, frustrating the fans of this genre. The plot is predictable but the characters are charismatic; Lucas Till and Merritt Patterson have a great chemistry; and the special effects and fight choreography are excellent. My vote is seven.

Title (Brazil): "Lobos" ("Wolves")

Note: On 10 Oct 2020, I saw this film again.

Painful.

Ugh why? Why oh why am I watching this on my day off?

I could be learning a new skill, doing some home improvements or even just cleaning. Anything would be better than this film.

I gave it a 4 due to production value only.

Not bad for a B flick
patrickmmc22 January 2015
I have to say that much of what has come out over the past 15 years has been lacking in one way or another, but particularly in originality. Additionally, stories always seem to fall short as a majority of the focus is on CGI effects and the sexual appeal to teen hormones.

I thought that this film did a fair job at being original in its plot and story. And though the story was not the greatest, it was different and it was entertaining. Nothing here was over done. As with anything, there was room for improvement, but I liked it just the same.

As for effects, the costumes and makeup were very well done. The stunts were reasonable and plausible for this type of film. Again, not over done.

I would be willing to see a sequel should the producers get the impulse to try again.

If you like werewolves, you might enjoy this film. Being a budget flick, the cost is low enough to own the DVD and not feel a pinch when you're done watching.

Difficult to take seriously
Leofwine_draca5 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
WOLVES is yet another teen-friendly werewolf flick that throws in a bit of everything in a bid to make something stick, but comes away looking shallow and vapid as a result. Our young loner hero ends up in a town populated by werewolves, but the only conflict comes from random rivalry between the major players. The main character is exceptionally dull and the SFX are a real letdown, ranging from ridiculous werewolf masks that look like something out of TEEN WOLF or WOLFCOP to lame CGI blood. Of the cast, it's only the seasoned professionals like Stephen McHattie and Jason Momoa who can make anything of this. The climax in particular is like something out of a soap opera, and just as difficult to take seriously.

I liked it for what it was, a low budget but well made movie.
datum99919 October 2014
You know what your getting from this, which is basically a teen wolf movie. As stated the acting isn't going to win an Oscar, but it decent enough for the budget and script given. The wolves are by far the best part. They are well made and aren't low budget at all, very good FX department. I would say you want a werewolf movie for the sake of that kind of movie then check this out. Jason plays his character well for this movie, not overly scary but you sure wont love him either. I would like to see a sequel to this that explain the history of the main blood lines and goes into that more. They can recast for that with no issues plot wise, which makes it an excellent jumping off point.

Quite PossiblyThe Worst Movie Ever

Worse werewolf movie of all time. Very disappointed, especially for a Jason Momoa and Merritt Patterson film. Not sure how people can give it a 6 or 7, definitely surprised to see 10s!

Worthwhile horror
s327616918 March 2015
I honestly don't know why some people have responded so negatively towards this film. Perhaps they did not watch more than the first twenty or so minutes.

It takes Wolves time to get off the ground and the segue into the story is not managed all that well, giving the initial impression of a clumsy B movie. If however, you persist you will be rewarded. Wolves improves as a the story progresses. The story itself is predicable horror fare but its competently done and very enjoyable.

The acting is solid too, and includes some capable Canadian actors you may be familiar with, such as Stephen McHattie, of Pontypool fame.

My advice ignore the negative nellies and give Wolves a go. You wont be disappointed. Eight out of ten from me.

Still a better love story than Twilight :)
yousy1218 February 2015
For a low budget movie, It surprisingly decent. After his great performance as Kal Drogo, Jason Momoa really show that he actually can act IMHO. He steal the thunder from main character of this movie. Well, I can't say much since English is not my first language but all I can tell, despite some of it's flaws such the weak plot and one or two scenes that made me cringed a little, I did enjoy watching this movie.

At the end of a tiring day, I just want to sit down on my comfy couch alone without my girlfriend bothering me, turn on my bluray and home theater system, and watch a movie that not trying to preach me about life lesson, or some chick flick come from fan-fiction that my girlfriend really like.

one for the teens
trashgang11 January 2016
I saw that it contained a few names I have seen before at for example Game Of Thrones or Saw or other to mention. And after seen the trailer I thought that it was worth a pick up, sadly at the end of this flick I was disappointed.

There wasn't any scary part or had any horror element. the effects were done CGI and when a wolf was eaten one's hand it didn't looked convincing in some ways. this is just a flick for teenagers who do like Vampire Diaries and stuff like that. Only Melanie Scrofano (Gail) shows some skin while having sex but overall this is tame. Not for me...

So-so werewolf film; bad acting.
suite923 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The Three Acts:

The initial tableaux: Cayden starts out as a high school quarterback with a fine girlfriend. Things devolve quickly for him. His behaviour on the field brings up questions. When the girlfriend suggests having sex in her car, his arousal triggers something else, and she runs screaming. He returns to his home only to awake with his parents dead and blood on his hands.

While the cops attempt to get enough evidence on him to put him away, Cayden hits the road. He eventually meets Wild Joe at a bar, and Wild Joe points him to Lupine Ridge.

Delineation of conflicts: Cayden wants to know more about who he is, and why he goes through these changes. The people in Lupine Ridge know some of the answers, but do not give them up all that easily. A gang in town is rather monopolistic about who holds what power in and around the town, and Cayden does not fit in that scheme. The people in the town and the gang outside of town have only an uneasy peace, and law enforcement seldom spends any time in the area.

Resolution: Cayden needs to uncover and resolve the tension between the town folk and the gang.

A town of werewolves in the Northeast with Jason Momoa
Wuchakk22 March 2019
A popular teenager in the Northeast (Lucas Till) discovers that he's a werewolf and escapes to the road after a tragedy at home. Upon getting a tip from Lemmy (John Pyper-Ferguson), he ends up in Lupine Ridge where he obtains a job at a farm and develops a relationship with a young bar owner (Merritt Patterson), which offends the wolfish town leader (Jason Momoa). Stephen McHattie plays the friendly farmer who takes the boy under his wings.

The creatively titled "Wolves" (2014) is a quality werewolf flick that's reminiscent of the Marvel comic book Werewolf by Night. (Even the werewolves resemble Don Perlin's versions a little). It has elements of The Howling franchise, but with better production values than the sequels, as well as a dash of "Twilight" (2008) and "The Messengers" (2007). (I hate mentioning "Twilight" because it will automatically turn off loads of people, but I mean the good aspects of that infamous movie).

"Wolves" has the right choices for the main cast, enough gore, some decent action, beautiful women, notable songs and exquisite Ontario locations with great nighttime sylvan ambiance. Yes, it's thoroughly comic booky, but it's well made for what it is and delivers the goods. I saw the theatrical version, but I heard the unrated version is a vast improvement with additional exposition.

The film runs 1 hour, 31 minutes and was shot in Ontario in the greater Toronto area.

"I need a hospital, or a vet, or something!"
Stevieboy66611 January 2020
This is one of those films that starts off by being narrated by its teenage hero, just like Zombieland or Stakeland, not really my style. Anyway this teen (actually played by then 24 year old Lucas Till) has a problem - when angry he unleashes superhuman strength, when he makes out with his girlfriend he turns into a werewolf and kills her. And he also appears to have butchered his parents, but has no recollection. In search of answers he heads off to Lupine Range, a place that sounds like somewhere in one of the Howling movies. As werewolf movies go this is pretty average. The plot is simple and predictable but sufficient to maintain interest. There is plenty of action, it never gets boring. The CGI effects are not great, but I've seen far worse. Jason Momoa as the lead baddie was very good, he certainly has plenty of on screen presence. What I did not like is the fact that on one hand this movie is pretty nasty, for example one scene has a young woman being viciously beaten by two bikers. But on the other hand the script contains many funny one liners, such as "What's more Halloween than getting eaten by a wolfman?", or the one quoted in my headline. Left me a tad confused as to what the makers intended, straight horror or comedy/horror? Wolves is no Howling (1981) but at the same time it's as good as some of the sequels and I felt reasonably satisfied when the end credits rolled.

Lots of howling and growling...
paul_haakonsen24 June 2018
When I stumbled upon "Wolves", I had not heard about it, but I was intrigued by the DVD cover. Why? Well, as a life-long avid fan of horror, of course I do enjoy werewolf movies.

"Wolves" turned out to be fairly generic in terms of werewolves movie go, but it was still entertaining enough for what it turned out to be.

The storyline in "Wolves" was predictable for sure, but still turned out to be entertaining enough.

They had a good cast ensemble, which performed quite well and actually managed to keep the movie from sinking into mediocrity. It was rather interesting to watch Jason Momoa in a movie such as this, and I must admit that he was cast quite well for such a role.

One of the best things about "Wolves" was the great special effects and CGI, because they really added lots of flavor and layers to the movie.

Luckily "Wolves" didn't turn out to be a revamped version of "Twilight" just with werewolves instead of vampires. It was actually rather enjoyable, although I doubt it is a movie that you will return to watch a second time around.

Nothing new
panther_husky18 October 2014
Watching the film reminded me of a Sunday afternoon Tele Movie, though I would have preferred to watch sport instead.

There wasn't anything new in the Wolves and it got boring with all the dialogue as if the director wanted to truly make you understand the reasons behind why all this was happening. I ended up not caring and wanted the film to end.

The acting wasn't too bad though the make-up effects were definitely made for TV and not anywhere near for theatrical release. The wolves were not scary and no where close to realistic.

The story line? A basic plot where the "hero" tries to be the hero and ends up the hero. Quite predictable except for one scene towards the end but then some of you may already figure it out.

Decent
gavin694216 April 2015
A boy (Lucas Till) is trying to find out about his family history and stumbles upon a town of lycanthropes.

Phil Brown, writing for Rue Morgue, calls this "an absolutely abysmal movie" and "a complete mess". He says this is "all stuff you've seen before and you've definitely seen it done better." Brown's only real positive comment is on the casting of Stephen McHattie, who he sees as something of a Canadian treasure.

Brown is too harsh. There is plenty to dislike, true enough, including a very forced plot that seems like paint by numbers (and seems to rip off ideas from werewolf novel "Bitten" without credit). But it still has some great effects and some strong wolf action. And Jason Momoa, who is quickly becoming a rising star in genre films and television.

Bad werewolf movie ...
peterp-450-2987166 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
"Life is like an onion. That's what they say. The more you peel it back, the more it makes you cry. Especially when you're afflicted."

It's obvious that everyone is looking for that gold mine to produce something similar like "Twilight". They even got help from David Hayter (writer of "X-men") and miraculously they found another theme. Imagine a brainstorming session at TF1 International : "Hey, Twilight used vampires . What if we use a pack of werewolves instead ? And a handsome young guy as a key player who meets a fresh, young wench somewhere in a remote place ? Maybe it's the start of a brand new series that will be so successful, teens will stumble over each other to see it ! ( followed by applause, cheers and heartfelt hugs) ". After watching this horribly acted and meaningless predictable story about an ancient tribe of werewolves who've retreated in a commune where they eventually compete among each other, I recommend to store these plans. Just to avoid a financial hangover.

Clayden Richards (Lucas Till) has a fairly turbulent puberty. For instance he dreams about werewolves at night. His parents blame this on his raging hormones that play tricks on him. However, everything is going really well for him. He has wonderful and caring parents, a gang of friends and the prettiest girl in school. He is a quarterback and has the appearance of an Adonis. Most teenage girls would melt just looking at him. Until he beats up an opponent during a match and while making out with his girlfriend, the beast in him bursts out. Literally. He flees from the place where he grew up and on his trip some guy called Wild Joe sends him out to the deserted village Lupine Ridge. Of course the place is swarming with werewolves. As you can see, the name of the village "Lupin" is distracted from the Latin word lupinus. Very subtle. What follows is the revealing of Clayden's past and his relation to Connor, a kind of alpha werewolf who rules the place.

Nothing new under the werewolf-moon and at times it's downright ridiculous. You really can't say it's exciting and it reminded me of "Teen Wolf" with Michael J. Fox. Only the latter I actually could appreciate. At times the transformation of the villagers looked successful. But mostly I thought I was watching the Muppet show with some wearing carnival costumes. However, I hope the makers weren't serious because I couldn't suppress a smile. I still don't know whether this was a smile because it all looked ridiculous or because that shown on the screen was actually meant to be funny. Some performances were pitifully poor. Lucas Till has the charisma of a flowerpot. Merritt Patterson looks delicious (useful for the werewolf Clayden) and sweet. Only Jason Momoa could convince me. But probably his huge impressive stature and his deep penetrating eyes caused this. The best acting performance was Stephen McHattie as the cooperative farmer who of course knows the whole history of Clayden's family.

"Wolves" is as thrilling as the stretched elastic in the underpants of a grandmother. Not really exciting. Even the presence of the beautiful Patterson and the sensual scene with Till doesn't help. I can still remember me seeing a fragment of a black and white movie when I was young, with someone turning into a werewolf because of the shrill sound of a school bell. That scared the crap out of me and for days I had nightmares (mind you I was only 12 years or so). "Wolves" will only keep me from sleeping because I'll be laughing irrepressible. And despite the sometimes bloody splatter scenes, you can hardly call it horror. It's also known that a person who's mutated into a werewolf, won't make use of his natural voice ! The term "Popcorn-teenager-horror" for tar sensitive souls will fit well. I praised "Wer" and thought it might be a revival of the werewolf genre. This film is quite the opposite.

Honest review
zeroduber24 October 2014
Hi, this is my review for David Hayter's Wolves movie.

First I want to apologies for advance for any mistake you find; I am not an English speaker. Now, let's get to business, I'm doing this for the different kind of viewers, the curious people, the fans of the genre (you know, vampires, wolves, Supernatural, Buffy, Anne Rice, kind of genre) and the maybe negative/ skeptical people.

By saying this is obviously I too am a fan of this series and books, so I know what people like to feel and watch when seen a movie that have supernatural beings. The movie is about a teenage boy who just discovered he is a werewolf, yes I know what are you thinking, more of Twilight crap, teenage lovers, perfect life, fall in love, etc. etc. but nope, because everything turns upside down as death and desolation came to the life of Lucas Till () until a estrange character does a really weird talk to him and makes him go to and even weirder small town full of people that don't like the poor teenage werewolf and things get very interesting a cooler.

The movie has a very easy to understand narration, with a nice speed, and doesn't exaggerate nor waste any time trying to explain the wolves transformation or the supernatural forces behind the werewolf experience, instead it makes the viewer enjoy the experience of being a lupine, the speed, the force, enhance abilities which is something no many movies even bother to do and just portrait it as something tragic or negative as a course, whether is a vampire or wolf is practically the same result.

So you get the teenage that by the way is pretty much mature and wiser kind of boy, who is forced to do this transition of boy to man/wolf to defend himself and the people he loves, and also balance his personal life with all the scenarios that a teenage may live, and yes that include sex, very ferocious, aggressive and hairy sex.

About the actors and their rolls, all of them make an perfect believable non stereotypic characters which I personally enjoy very much, Lucas Till was excellent, not only did make maybe the best teenage werewolf of any movie but David Hayter's work as a director was really make me want to see more of his work for future projects, Jasom Mamoa was a force to be feared most of the time, he really pushed the other characters and made them fear him Merritt Patterson and Stephen McHattie played a great complement and pretty much all of them make a mayor roll that is like a big circle that creates a very intelligent narration with a very welcome twist at the near end.

This movie has a lot of lovely moments, great characters, with very interesting backgrounds that actually make me wanted to know more about them, the story is a very good and enjoyable adventure, that opens the path to a second movie and maybe a TV series which I think know is be the perfect moment, even a prequel with Mamoa character past would be great.

I think this is one of David Hayter finest works, which really put him in the level of great movie directors; I am really waiting for his next move.

Not a bad werewolf flick, not bad at all.
bbickley13-921-5866416 November 2014
Does a good job of trying to give us the complete package.

Went to see it cause it was a werewolf flick, and I have not seen many in comparison to the vampire flick. I had no idea what I was in for.

At first it seem like I was going to get a Twilight for werewolves (even though there are werewolves in Twilight) as it started out as a movie about a pretty jock who discovers he's a werewolf by birth and goes on a journey to discover himself.

Than I saw Jason Momoa was in the pic and I knew it was going to be a man's flick, which is what it turned into.

Hot chicks, good fight scenes, and some impressive make up for a low budget horror movie.

Got to give it up for the voice of Solid Snake in Metal Gear, who wrote and directed this film. It was an exceptional effort.

Wolves in People clothing
one9eighty27 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
A young dude Cayden Richards (played by that geezer who plays Alex Summers/Havoc in "X-Men: First Class"; Lucas Till) with growing pains living with his adopted parents. Growing pains include sudden hair growth, insatiable appetite for blood, new pointy teeth, weird nightmares, and random howling at the moon. Things begin to go wrong for Cayden during a game of American football at his high school, nether the less his cheerleader girlfriend Lisa Stewart (Kaitlyn Leeb) tries to cheer him up with sex in a car but this also doesn't actually happen; Cayden's new wild side scares off Lisa. This is the catalyst for problems; Cayden's random growing pains see him blacking out and waking up to find he has slaughtered his step parents. Racked with guilt he goes on the run and soon encounters a stranger claiming to know his secret called "Wild Joe" (John Pyper-Ferguson) . Wild Joe advises if Cayden wants answers about his past and what has made him into a moon howling hairy troubled teenager then he should visit the random town of Lupine Ridge, and thus the merry journey begins.

Upon arriving at Lupine ridge Cayden hits a bar and meets Angelina "Angel" Timmins (Merritt Patterson) and Gail Timmins (Melanie Scrofano) who run the place, in fact most of the local residents are in the bar too making the intro scene easier. Some of the residents instantly sniff him out as a descendant of the original werewolf clan that formed the town, others less nasally strong just mock him as the new kid in town, including Jason Momoa (Connor) the current alpha werewolf of the town. The night ends unsuccessfully for Cayden. The next day John Tollerman (Stephen McHattie) offers Cayden (using the name of Danny for cover), it turns out he's actually Cayden's uncle - coincidence or what! Cayden soon discovered that he is the child of rape, when trying to gain control of the town Connor (Momoa) who is a pure local werewolf rapes Cayden's mum who is also pure local werewolf. Knowing the rape child would be groomed to be the new evil all conquering alpha the pregnant mother is hidden by some of the good guy locals and gives birth in secret, after giving birth the child is put up for adoption and the mother kills herself. Connor is led to believe that she died before child birth so he is unaware of the alpha heir. Aaaanyway.... The alpha heir is back and he's curious about his own background and upon learning wants to help out, besides that he's already fallen in love with Angel (Merritt Patterson) and she is entwined in her own wolf dramas also involving alpha dog Connor. Angel has been promised to Connor to birth a pure werewolf as his original son (in this instance Cayden who is suspected dead) dies in prior to birth - it's either this deal or Connor and his pack of cronies go mental and kill all the locals so Connor remains the only pure blooded werewolf. Finding Angel is promised to Connor like some kind of cash cow is the last straw for Cayden - this is his fuel for a fight with Connor (his dad), all hell soon breaks loose.

The big twist in this comes at the end (Despite the earlier spoilers this one is the biggest spoiler so be careful…) when Wild Joe returns to put the finishing blow on Connor, it turns out that Cayden hadn't been blacking out and killing people, Wild Joe had been grooming him as his assassin against Connor and had been killing people secretly and letting Cayden take the rap for it.

When I started watching the film I thought the effects were tacky but that's because it's old school so I didn't mind (there is no CGI or animation - it's all classic make up and effects). The werewolves do look like the werewolves of 30's B-Movie cinema, they'd have looked fine next to a slightly camp Frankenstein or the creature from the black lagoon - but this is endearing rather than off putting - to this point thought there was a charm to the film which made me stick with it till the end. Don't expect deep and moving character development or startling narrative twists to the story. What you can do though is easily drift into and watch the mindless narrative unfold without having to interact your emotions.

I've seen a lot of bad reviews on here but please don't be put of by them, I have seen worse, I have seen better, this one was harmless and I was able to watch it without the missus asking every couple of minutes what's going on.

Packs a whimper
jonnytheshirt4 November 2014
Despite Stephen McHattie and Jason Mamoa bringing some gravitas to the proceedings Wolves unfortunately trundles along in unspectacular stereotypical fashion. Touching upon slightly interesting themes of the nature of the Werewolves they soon fall apart with very forced plot turns. Perhaps they were hankering after the Twilight audience and they do indeed succeed in making Twilight look better in comparison. It's all very forgettable and the makeup was a bit naff to be honest. I suggest the European filmed Wer instead of this if you are in the mood for some Wolven hijinks. If you are in the mood for mild teen angst and a script by numbers then Wolves will allow you to relax.
