Gaffe? Improv?
HelloBlockbuster26 August 2023
Picture it, in the Queen of Hearts Saloon for Ned Yost's bachelor party. All the men around the table, discussing the Nichols & Dimes Barber shop and Ned throws out this one liner:

"Nevermind that I've been driving with the top down since my thirties."

Bill Avery, played by Jack Wagner, looks down with a furled yet puzzled brow before looking at Ned then looking away. It appears he's trying to grasp what was just said in relation to a literal timeline. (The actor, not the character.)

Was this a gaffe? Or impromptu? Was this saying around in 1919? (Show started 1910 and it's now season 8, so 1919 is a guesstimate.)

I think it was Hrothgar Mathews' (Ned Yost) actually responding in a way he does in his actual life, albeit by accident. And they just kept it because the only one who caught it but let it slide was Jack Wagner. Great Easter Egg if you ask me!

Pre Wedding Jitters

Warning: Spoilers
Elizabeth is having a hard time processing Nathan's revelation. She tells Rosemary that not much makes sense to her anymore and while Rosemary tries to help Elizabeth the whole episode and give her advice, Elizabeth is dismissive of her and treats her unkindly. Is she justified in her words towards Rosemary? Grief comes in all shapes and sizes but this is not a very likeable version of Elizabeth right now.

Clara and Minnie make the food for Florence's bachelorette party. Clara walks in on Jesse and Hickam eating pie in the kitchen and she assumes that they are eating the food for the party. She realizes she made a mistake and ultimately apologizes to Jesse.

Allie goes to the saloon to return Lucas's gift back to him. They have a little chat and it is very lovely. I'm glad that these two seem to get along.

Hickam finally asks Fiona to dinner! Yay!

Elizabeth tells Lucas what Nathan's secret was. She is mostly upset because Nathan withheld the information for a long time. Lucas asks Elizabeth's permission to ask Nathan why he waited so long to tell Elizabeth but she declines. She gets a little rude with Lucas too but he reassures her that he is always there for her.

Fiona and Carson still are not on the same page. They both want different things. Carson doesn't propose but he suggests that maybe they think about marriage and how that might affect the way they move forward with their dreams. Honestly I think it's a bad suggestion. They need to just sit down and have a "where is this going" conversation and make an ultimate decision.

Rosemary and Nathan run into each other at the library and he confesses to her that he's actually a reader and even likes books written by women but he still will never understand them. Rosemary tells Nathan about her own love triangle with Elizabeth and Jack and that she regrets causing them pain. He tells her that he can't let go of Elizabeth just yet.

We meet Florence's son, Paul, and it seems like he may have a crush on Allie.

Rosemary is doing some research on the town and it may seem like she is wanting to build something or, as some people are guessing, she might end up being Hope Valleys new mayor.

Elizabeth goes to Nathan to talk more about his prolonged secret and he tells her that he felt guilty about Jacks death and requested the transfer to HV but didn't anticipate falling in love with her. She doesn't say anything and just leaves.

Gowen mentions Abigail to Christopher. Maybe Lori will be back in season 9 after all?

At the bachelorette party, the guys merge over to play games with the ladies. Fiona suggests one game that is "risqué". Florence goes first and has to find Neds hands by holding all the other men's hands and guessing (while she's blindfolded). She gets it correct. Then it's Elizabeth's turn and as she is guessing for Lucas, she ends up holding Nathan's hands.

The next day Lucas comes to her house to check on her and she admits that she's mortified that she didn't pick out Lucas's hands. He is not upset about it all. She then tells Lucas that Nathan told her that he loved her again and Lucas asked what her response to him was. She tells him that she didn't say anything and just left. Lucas is bummed by this statement and when Elizabeth asks him to come inside, he politely declines. Poor Lucas.

Elizabeth tells Rosemary what Nathan said to her and asks Rosemary if she encouraged him in his feelings for Elizabeth. Rosemary says no but that she just wants what is best for Elizabeth and, again, Elizabeth chooses to get snippy with Rosemary saying "how do you know what's best for me? How does anyone know what's best for me?" Rosemary is upset and goes home.

Overall this was a hard episode to watch because Elizabeth is going through some hard stuff and lashing out on others as she is processing. I hope she comes to her senses soon.

Inconsistent Writing, But Kevin McGarry Truly Shines.

Inconsistent writing: figuring it out as they go along. A wonderful performance by Kevin McGarry in this episode; he truly shines in his scenes. Secondary storylines, like Faith and Carson, are definitely drawn out and feeling repetitive.

Warning: Spoilers
This was the romantic season finale I ever saw. So happy Elizabeth chose Lucas. It was the culmination of a love story that started almost 3 years before. I can't wait to till season 9.
