Absurdly poignant and moving. Warning: Spoilers
This rather deep gem of an animated short was a nice surprise, I wasn't expecting all that much from the look of it, as it looked a little rough around the edges..but it was quite melancholy and so sad! It features an aged dinosaur-like creature who lives in an apartment just like a regular guy, and going by the vintage monster movie posters all over the walls he was once upon a time a world famous B-movie monster great of the '50s. Unfortunately though the current trend of horror pictures just doesn't really have a place for his kind anymore and he's pretty much washed up as an actor and the times have moved on since his glory days, he's a behemoth from a long gone era of motion pictures.. And the poor guy laments as he gets a call from his agent who basically confirms that he really isn't a draw anymore and he sits down and enjoys one of his cheesy old movies as he imagines he's terrorising the fleeing citizens once again, and then he slumps in his chair, and dies! It's really sad, more so than I'm probably making it sound with my unflattering description. He's clearly meant to be a take on Godzilla, because there's a headline that mentions Mothra. I love the animation and the black and white visuals which are kind of evocative and moody while still having a sort of endearing cuteness at the same time. I love what the late Mr Zacherle says as the shorts finishes, very poetic. What a wonderful melodious voice the man had, he was so great as the voice of Aylmer... The spirit of those kinds of movies still lives today, and I think stop-motion animation and claymation are art forms that have a special magic that never dies, and this short in part feels like a loving little tribute to that particular fun and classic chapter in movie history. Thank you, don't forget to show some love to those old movie monster greats once in a while folks! X

Bygone Behemoth (2010)

An over-the-hill movie monster lives a lonely life inside his apartment where the walls constantly remind him of his glory days. The monster doesn't have much to do but watch his old movies on television. BYGONE BEHEMOTH is a rather charming and touching homage to the classic movie monsters from the 1950s. The film runs a very quick five-minutes and features a monster that you can't help but enjoy and at the same time feel sorry for. If you're a fan of the older monsters movies then there's no question that you'll connect to the story and the love that the film pays to the genre. There are many touching and funny moments throughout the film including a brief cameo by horror host John Zacherle in his final credited role.
