Love the premise of the show, but..

...the woman presenter is unwatchable. Watched for as long as I could stand her "enthusiasm," or whatever you want to call it. The guy was fine. If she weren't on this show, I would continue to watch, but I just can't. I really wanted to like it, because I agree with another reviewer that it is refreshing to see these older homes.

Enjoyable
earmusewicz12 October 2021
Main complaint nothing to do with actual show, but commercials here in CA are too many, too often!

COH Quite enjoyable! What a relief to be entertained with beautiful homes around the US, by an "average/normal couple", no joking joke cracking, jabs at each other, don't have to meet their families, etc.

Being a female in the industry I completely appreciate Elizabeths' knowledge however her voice YIKES, way too high pitch. We have to view with volume off.

Love Seeing the Old Homes
avakay-982872 March 2023
I watch with the volume turned very low. Can't stand the gal's voice and constant chatter. The guy is fine. She is obnoxious. Love seeing all the old homes and it's hard to believe they are so cheap. Love seeing the quality of the old woodwork. Buyers would really have to spend a great deal of time and money repairing and restoring these old homes. Many old homes stink and are hard to heat and cool. Expect high utility bills with an old house. I enjoy the road trip to see the next house. Love the guy's old Ford truck. He sure has it looking and running good. Hope some of the old houses are saved.

I'M HOOKED!! Love this adorable Old House Saving Couple! ;D
midnitepantera12 August 2021
What a breath of fresh air this show is, literally a joy to watch and fun! This cute couple is trying to convince Americans to SAVE all the Beautiful Historical Homes that you can buy for under $150,000. And they show you so many treasures and how you can restore original elements and even where to shop on a budget for those items.

I am So SICK of remodeling shows that just want to flip properties for money, (making the housing market the ridiculous mess it is today, and making it impossible for a regular working family to ever own a decent/safe home) :( And all those other shows that refurbish expensive McMansions. ICK!! :(

This is a real show, for real people, and a chance to remodel a historical beauty and make a home for yourself and your family. It's a wonderful History lesson full of FULL ON EYE CANDY if you love old houses, and Victorian era and other old school architecture. I"M HOOKED! Can't wait to see the next episode. I literally felt Joy in my heart watching this show and seeing all the houses they visit that were saved by loving, hardworking, artistic people whom appreciate Historical Artworks in Architecture. WATCH IT NOW!!! :D.

The perfect show!
kendallanthropus9 September 2021
I started following their instagram recently and was over the moon when I heard they were getting a tv show! It's such a wonderful departure from remodeling shows and it puts an emphasis on the history of the houses themselves - I've learned so much already!! The hosts are absolutely charming as well. Love it!

Disappointing
standupwr6 November 2021
Having renovated two old houses and subscribed to CIRCA Cheap Old Houses, I was hoping this program would reveal the real costs and difficulties involved in renovating/restoring them. It did not. Just like "This Old House, " It perpetuates the romantic notion of "returning an old house to its former glory" - which is practical only for those with more money than sense. Tossing around ideas on the fly about esthetic modifications like refinishing floors and painting is no help to someone who thinks they can DIY - even if costs are provided.

Anyone who has done this knows that the most expensive & difficult items in renovating old houses are structure, systems AND finding local tradesmen to repair/replace them. When buying a house at a deep discount to the going rate per square foot in the area, be prepared to spend as much or more on its repair & updating - IF you can find someone to do it.

Before someone takes on an "historic" property, they should ask the local historical society why the house has been allowed to dilapidate and if there are craftsmen in the area who are willing to do preservation, restoration, or renovation - at a premium.

Refreshing!

I LOVE this show. FINALLY, a show that promotes old homes for their true, artistic and architectural value and integrity! True old house enthusiasts will not be disappointed. Much old house eye candy to be admired. And, yes, keep those old windows!

Good start, but something is missing.
anarchyONtheSHORTbus23 September 2021
As other reviews pointed out, it's nice to see unique older homes for a change instead of the run-of-the mill-modern homes that lack any kind of warmth or charm, but....this show falls flat. The hosts are okay, but they travel around aimlessly. You never see any of their suggestions or ideas come to fruition. And when they do showcase homes that have been saved, the owner gets a flimsy little flag that looks like it was picked up from the souvenir section at the last gas station on the way there.

If they're given a season 2, I would definitely change up the format. Instead of going to see vacabnt houses, the hosts should focus on followers that have purchased homes seen on their page, offer design services, and document the work being done.

Great New Next Gen show
davefraser-202771 November 2021
What a great new show. So inventive, not the same old smash and renovate. Nice to see a show with history and imagination. All too often we see the same boring show over and over again. Cheap Old Houses, makes me want to buy one, restore it and make it historically period correct. I watched every episode twice, Elizabeth is brilliant and Ethan is hilarious. Go Ethan and Elizabeth!!!

A 3 only because the hosts seem nice but the show is terrible
jdmartin-0816721 August 2021
This might be the most pointless show on HGTV. Literally the show is like Seinfeld - about nothing. They drive to some town, look at 2 old houses for sale, and debate which is the better deal. That's it. That's the show. The only reason you're watching it, as George Costanza said, is because it's on TV. The show is so cheap that half of the filming takes place with a hand held camcorder by the hosts so they don't have to spend any money on camera crews.

This network is really going down the drain. I am waiting for "Honey Boo-Boo's Designs" to come next.

More old houses please! (10/10)

Season 1 was a whirlwind, and I loved every episode. The celebration of old houses - and the adventures folks who take on their restoration - was so wonderful to watch. Gimme season 2 now please!

Perfect for Historical Homes buffs
frsantariga-515244 November 2021
I love the enthusiasm that Liz and Ethan bring to the program. I'm Always waiting to hear about the history of the homes.

Reminds me of my first apartment, it was in a home which was built in 1740's in Norwalk Connecticut. I was lucky because the landlord (94 years old ) lived in the downstairs apartment and told me about the history of the home from who built it to when he purchased it back in 1917. Please keep the show going!

HGTV should be embarrassed
Masonstanfield30 August 2021
So bad it's sad. What a waste of time... You watch these two walk through old bummer houses and the payoff is....... they decide which house to post on Instagram. Don't watch. You'll never reclaim the time wasted.

See Old houses on the East Coast
krasmussen-270344 November 2021
I understand why some didn't like it but I watch it to see available old houses that are for sale. They also showcase someone each episode who has restored an old house which is interesting.

If you want to watch someone restore and old house this is not for you. If you just want to see houses with history that are available for sale then watch.

Swing and a miss...
rokbrnc7 September 2021
We were really looking forward to watching this show as we love seeing old houses restored. We recorded 4 episodes with the plan to bing watch and to be left looking at each other wondering what it is we just watched. This show is terrible, we deleted the remaining episodes and removed it from future recordings.

Not only are the hosts super annoying, they don't do anything. After further researching who they are we discovered they are nothing more than real estate agents, traveling around the east coast finding abandoned houses that they then list on their website for sale. As for the production, as someone already mentioned, they must have a budget of $100.00 per episode to cover their gas and food expenses. If you have an iPhone, you too could make a HGTV apparently 🤷‍♂️

Can't Wait For Next Season!
insurancelady-411354 November 2021
Absolutely Loved this show. It was wonderful seeing how homeowners poured their love into the historic homes. The details and beauty of these homes do not compare to the "cookie cutter" homes today. Saving a piece of history for future generations to enjoy is great. Hoping the show features homes in the Southeast sometime soon. Looking for my own Victorian home in the future. This show gave me the courage to do so. The hosts of the show are so knowledgeable and inspiring to watch too. Thank you!

She knows everything
johnnyslane-6299823 April 2022
There's nothing that gets past this architectural savant. She knows everything about everything. Makes for a terrible co-host. The kind of person that everyone loves to hate.

LOVE this show!
rmwfrgyjx3 March 2022
I love this show. Seeing what's possible and available for so cheap in today's crazy real-estate market is so eye-opening and inspiring. I wish they would follow up with improvements of an individual house so we could see the transformation. We need more of this show!

Most adorable show (and couple) ever!
racheldardenbennett10 March 2022
I love the show. Honestly, in the past I have not been super interested in houses, but watching Ethan and Elizabeth enthusiastically reveal a house and helping it find new love and life, has me hooked. I loved their show and couldn't wait to see what new treasure they would reveal to us. I never thought I would say this, but I'm excited now to buy an old house and give it love and attention, instead of just bulldozing over it and building something new! I'm excited and helpful about a season 2! All my friends are hooked as well!

Love learning about the little details that make old homes amazing from the knowledgeable hosts, and have even learned things I didn't know about our 1910s house from watching the tours.

rkraley3 March 2022
Love following @cheapoldhouses on instagram and this show brings it to life! It's amazing to see the potential of so many of these historical homes and how they could be brought back to life. Also love seeing how people who found their cheap old house have fixed them up! Such great stories. Loved season 1 and I can't wait for season 2!

My kind of show...sort of.
rwwetzel-230973 November 2022
I love shows where they renovate old homes, I'm truly tired of the same remodeling shows just with different hosts. That said this is not a remodeling show but will point out the wonderful design elements of yesteryear. They show you the character of the older homes withe hope that people will buy and keep these wonderful older homes closer to the way they were made to be. Yes it is NOT cheap and it's insanely expensive to do it and keep it nearly 100% as it was with modern codes and appliances. But if one takes a few classes they can do so much on their own. Though getting all the tools needed and a place to work in makes it difficult as well. But hopefully this show can get more than a few to want to save these beautiful homes before they're all gutted and modernized.
