I've known two people who died from ALS, so this film interested me on that basis, but I think it appeals to all audiences dealing with the prospect of someone dying at some point (in other words, everyone).
Carla is an entertainer who seems to do a bit of everything, but in this film will probably be remembered for her quirky and (to some) irreverent sense of humour. Be prepared for some really painful puns and other wordplay. And lots of condoms. But it's worth it.
ALS affects people at different rates, and Carla declines quickly. But neither Carla nor the film is negative about this. Carla does suffer some very bad times, but her personality is strong enough to override all that. She insists on finding the positive and the humour in everything, and where there is none, she makes it. It's not denial. It's making the best of it. I think most people will leave the film with a happy smile, powered directly by Carla's determined but genuine positivity.
It was also nice to see the very caring relationship between mother and son in this film.
