In the age of peak TV, there’s a lot of bad television out there. But rather than take the time to highlight what everyone should already be forgetting, IndieWire is examining the heartbreaking misses of 2017; the shows that felt like they had something special — either in concept, talent, or early episodes — but failed to fulfill that promise.
For the shows that weren’t cancelled, hope rings eternal. TV is a medium that allows for development, improvement, and the virtual erasure of bad first impressions. The shows below might be a long way from getting good, but their break bad hurt enough that even for the most disappointing, we still hope for the best.
And if you like any shows on the list, then good luck and godspeed. You found something there that we only wish we could have seen. Maybe next year.

2017-11-06T07:23:20-08:00Lamar Odom Collapses at Night Club
Former NBA player and Keeping Up with the Kardashians star Lamar Odom collapsed at a Los Angeles nightclub over the weekend. The incident brought back memories of a near-fatal collapse that Odom suffered two years ago in a brothel in Nevada, after which he spent some time recovering in the hospital. Odom claimed that his 2015 collapse had nothing to do with alcohol or drugs, but he did check himself into rehab the following year. Sunday's collapse was blamed by Odom's publicist on dehydration and exhaustion, a malady that is the go-to explanation for nearly every mysterious celebrity health scare.

In a video posted by TMZ, the former Lakers star fell to the ground in his VIP booth at the Sunset Strip nightclub.

TMZ posted a video of Odom being lifted off the ground and into a chair by several security guards. In the clip, Odom is slumped over on the ground but appears lucid once he’s sitting up.
His rep told TMZ that Odom fainted as a result of dehydration due to an intense workout earlier in the day. The rep added that the club had been very hot when Odom passed out.

Comedians have to be an open book. Even if they don’t share every tiny detail about their lives or their preferences or their shortcomings (or those of the people closest to them), there’s a certain unspoken audience/funny person contract that says, “In exchange for this ticket or my invested time, I get access to your brain.” Some performers guide audiences to the universal. Some shepherd the audiences right into a pool of personal uncertainty, sharing openly about stresses and personal misgivings and deep connections with confidants and family members.
The latest Netflix stand-up special “Patton Oswalt: Annihilation” finds one of the world’s most famous comedian in an attempt to blend those two in a way that few comics can. At the very top of a hill, nestled in among perfectly manicured trees and rising above the billboards and neon signs of the Sunset Strip lies a castle with a very storied history. The Chateau Marmont has graced the skyline of Los Angeles since the early 1920's, when it was built as the city's first earthquake-proof apartment building. Not more than 10 years later the hotel as we know it was founded. The building was destined for star-crossed glamour; it was modeled after a Chateau in the Loire Valley that is believed to be Leonardo Da Vinci's final resting place. Almost as soon as it opened, celebrities began flocking to its hallowed halls. To wander the Chateau's grounds is to step into an alternate...

Lynn Castle Rose Colored Corner Light (Light In The Attic)
Coming across visually as a prototype Nancy Sinatra about to enter The Valley Of The Dolls, Lynn Castle in the 1960s was an entrancing and beguiling entity. Her debut album finally appears a few years shy of her turning eighty, and it is a tremendous affair, an index of splendid and unrealized possibilities, as stark as it is haunting.
Vocally she sounds like a female Leonard Cohen who's been listening to too much Nina Simone, whose smoke-laced croak she frequently echoes. Her look though uber-girlie doesn't match her sound, and simply serves to enhance the appeal of her beauty and big, big hair. Think Warhol's Candy Darling doing an arch Barbie doll look and you are nearly there. Add Jackie O shades and you have quite simply arrived. Jeff Spencer Gifts Us With This Gem
This week I have something old. Next time I’ll have something new. I’m aged enough that I might be living on borrowed time. But I’m not blue. Because I’m not writing about that which shall remain nameless but which rhymes with drivel bore pooh.
I was watching an old episode of 77 Sunset Strip– there’s no other kind – called “Mr. Goldilocks.” It was a typical episode; private eye’s on a case that he manages to solve in 60 minutes – of 40, if you zap through the commercials on your DVR. This week Pi Jeff Spencer was trying to recover some jewels which had been stolen while they were being transported from a Palm Springs show back to Los Angeles. Spencer tracked the thief, Abern Wills, into the desert and got shot in the arm for his troubles. Which was just the beginning of his troubles.

Wanna live in Harry Styles' house? Well you can—for a cool $8.5 million. The "Sign of the Times" crooner may be off the romantic market, but yesterday he put his three-bedroom, 4,401 square-foot Hollywood Hills home on the market for almost $8.5 million. The gated three-bedroom, five-bathroom home boasts "epic" views of downtown and the ocean, and is "perched" just above Los Angeles' famed Sunset Strip. The 14-room house was originally built in 1963 and features a breakfast room, living room, master bedroom, large patio, home theater and two other bedrooms. There's also a fire place, central heating and air, keeping this pad cool and hot at all the right times. ...

After four years Martin Scorsese is back with another six filmic gems from all corners of the Earth. Love struggles in the slums of Thailand and the economic boom town of Taipei; underdog heroes undertake troubled missions in Turkey and Kazakhstan, a Malay storyteller plays cinematic games with basic narrative, and a vintage Brazilian art film is pure visual poetry. They’ve all been rescued by the World Cinema Project.

Eric Burdon’s soulful, heart-stopping wail made him one of the most unforgettable voices of the ’60s. As the lead singer for British Invasion heroes the Animals, he injected a dose of gritty reality into the pop charts with hits like “House of the Rising Sun” and “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” and by decade’s end he had moved on to front the barrier-breaking funk group, War.
Today, the music legend remains an active advocate for peace, producing music aimed squarely at the status quo. In honor of his 76th birthday, Burdon is treating fans to a...

Michael Parks, longtime Hollywood mainstay and beloved character actor and singer, has passed away at the age of 77. The news was announced by filmmaker Kevin Smith, who took to his Instagram to share that “the best actor I’ve ever known” and his “cinematic muse,” had died. No cause of death was named.
Smith directed Parks in both his “Tusk” and “Red State,” having relished the longtime actor’s career since first seeing him in Robert Rodriguez’s “From Dusk Till Dawn.” Though Parks’ career stretched back to 1960, when he made his screen debut on TV’s “Zane Grey Theater,” in recent years, the supporting standout had enjoyed a revival at the hands of both Quentin Tarantino (who Smith deemed Parks’ “biggest fan”) and Smith, who continued to craft roles for the singular actor.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: How many episodes of a show do you watch before you’re comfortable reviewing it? All the screeners provided? Just “enough” till you form an opinion? Only one or two, etc.? The whole season?
Sonia Saraiya (@soniasaraiya), Variety
The answer has become four. If they provide less, I watch all of them. But if they provide more, I stop at four, which is about the length of a feature film — somewhere between 90 minutes and four hours. Sometimes (rarely) I’ll watch more than four — it depends on how I’m enjoying it, or what’s happening in the story. But I’ve determined that four episodes...

Jessica Jones Reconstructs The Crime
Well, I can’t put it off any longer no matter how hard I try. And believe me, I’ve tried.
The last time I started a column with those words we were engaged in a not-so-great Civil War. It’s how I began my multi-column series on Marvel’s Civil War II. Today we turn to the aftermath of Civil War II. Call it Marvel’s Reconstruction Era, only the historical one was probably less painful.
Inhuman Ulysses Cain predicted future crimes. Captain Marvel arrested everyone the predictions said would commit some future crime and put them in jail. I wrote about why this was against the law. You know, it’s a pity that this Captain Marvel is forcing a perfectly respectable Captain Marvel to call himself Shazam.
One of the future criminals Captain Marvel imprisoned was Allison Green. Problem was, the prediction about Allison was wrong.

[[tmz:video id="0_4kyvyepo"]] Skrillex was pulled over and handcuffed Wednesday night, and he blamed Elon Musk. Law enforcement sources tell us the superstar DJ was driving on the Sunset Strip in his Tesla with music -- his own music -- blaring for all to hear. Cops pulled him over to deal with the noise issue, but when they asked for ID, Skrillex came up empty-handed. That prompted the cops to order him out of the car and then slap on the cuffs.

[[tmz:video id="0_sc1rdrb7"]] Another big night out for Scottie Pippen ... but this time, no Larsa in sight. Instead, the ex-nba star left Bootsy Bellows nightclub on the Sunset Strip with a couple hot chicks in tight dresses. Of course, it's possible they're all just friends ... we're looking into it. Scottie and Larsa have been on much better terms lately -- and had appeared to reconcile after he filed for divorce back in October ... but court records show the case is still active.

La La Land’s singing and dancing stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone may be center stage in the Oscar-nominated film, but movie history buffs (and Angelenos) likely noticed another small but significant cameo right at the end when, ahem, the big thing happens. (No spoilers here.)
The Chateau Marmont, Hollywood’s most infamous hotel, makes an appearance, as the final real-life Los Angeles location featured in the film, which has been called a love letter to the city. But it’s not simply a quaint bit of nostalgia like the Rialto Theatre or Angel’s Flight.
