Can we get a lie detector test up in here?
Howling_at_the_Moon_Reviews16 February 2024
I felt a bit emotionally exhausted after watching this one, so you know that means something in and of itself. This is a slow burn psychological horror/thriller about trust, trauma and discerning what is reality and what isn't.

Some people are going to find this boring, but I couldn't unglue my eyes from the screen. It was so captivating and atmospheric in the strangest way. There was something about this one that felt very unique and special.

The acting here was pretty stellar all around. The husband had some cringe moments when upset/crying but I think it was supposed to come across as ingenuine. But truly, our three leads here did a really great job.

This is not the most fulfilling movie as far as story goes, so be forewarned that you might feel a little... wanting at the end. There isn't a whole lot of background explained and is left pretty open ended. I would have loved a little more explanation/closure but I understand that wasn't really the point here. But yet also the point because she didn't know what was going on either haha. There was just a lot left up in the air... but it also added to the confusion and atmosphere.

I feel like if there was just a little more to the story it would have easily tipped over into the 7's but regardless this was a really solid watch that I would definitely recommend.

A bit confusing story saved by great acting...
paul_haakonsen17 February 2024
Stumbling upon the 2023 movie "Somewhere Quiet" here in 2024, by random luck, and seeing it was a movie that I hadn't heard about, much less seen, then of course I opted to sit down and watch it and see what writer and director Olivia West Lloyd had to offer.

The movie's synopsis definitely sounded interesting enough, I will say that much. However, I found the narrative to be somewhat slow paced and confusing. Sure, the storyline had some interesting aspects to it, and I guess that writer and director Olivia West Lloyd managed to portray the mental breakdown of Meg rather well.

One of the drawbacks to the narrative in "Somewhere Quiet" is that the audience is left with a bunch of unanswered questions throughout the course of the narrative. But writer and director Olivia West Lloyd definitely was on to something interesting and good here with this 2023 mystery thriller.

The movie has a rather small cast ensemble, and I wasn't familiar with the actors and actresses, except for actress Marin Ireland. But it should be noted that the acting performances were good, and leading actor Kentucker Audley (playing Scott) and Jennifer Kim (playing Meg) carried the movie quite well.

I have to applaud Jennifer Kim for her performance in the movie, because it was really great. Her performance as Meg really made up for a somewhat weird and a little bit confusing narrative.

"Somewhere Quiet" was listed as a thriller and horror, but it is in fact a mystery thriller.

My rating of "Somewhere Quiet" lands on a six out of ten stars and Jennifer Kim is really the driving force behind this movie.

Final Girl
BandSAboutMovies20 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Meg (Jennifer Kim) is trying to find a new normal after being part of a brutal kidnapping that she barely escaped. One way that she's achieving self-care is to take a trip to Cape Codd with her husband Scott (Kentucker Audley). His family has a huge countryside compound that will give her the peace that she needs until his cousin Madeline (Marin Ireland) shows up. Her snobbery unleashes nightmares in Meg as she starts to deal with what she's live through as well as the truth behind why she was abducted.

Meg and Scott's relationship begins to unravel as an old woman shows up in the woods and Meg begins to feel that Madeline and her husband are keeping secrets from her. Of course there's a much darker story behind all of this, as you just knew there was.

Director and writer Olivia West Lloyd has put together a movie that slowly makes you wonder who is right, why Meg has gone through all of this and whether anyone can be trusted. I always wanted to see a movie where a Final Girl tries to deal with the PTSD that had to come from dealing with a horrific situation. This does that but puts her into an even worse one.

Do not watch!
bigbluefan-336294 February 2024
This is not a horror movie or a thriller. It is almost 2 hrs of the most boring stuff ever! The main character is spaced out the whole movie, along with her husband. I kept looking for chances to fast forward in the movie. I still don't know the point of this whole movie it's like OK she went through something traumatic. She can't tell reality from what she's imagining and neither can the audience. This movie should not have been labeled a horror. This movie was a waste of my time. It's one of those movies that you wish you can get your time back. It's like a Netflix movie that you take your chances on and it's a dud.

Terrible Ending and tons of unanswered questions
paulmaisonet5 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
So many questions unanswered and this is one of those movies that has an ending that is up for interpretation BS. And no it's not a horror in the slightest. Suspense and/or thriller, sure, but no a horror. Waste of our time.

I seriously don't know how this got such a good Rotten Tomato's score.

You don't find out anything about the cousin, who she really is, why is she lying about a dying mother. And you never find out any details about her kidnapping other than there may have been a tape. But you never truly find out why she was kidnapped.

Do yourselves a favor and wait until this is ok Netflix I guess. Straight garbage.

One of the worst movies I have ever watched.
juliancedrone5 February 2024
An absolute waste of 2 hours. Nothing is resolved and the entire movie makes zero sense nor is any part of the plot explained. It's basically 2 hours of a guy sighing and the main character having random dreams that have nothing to do with the story. Avoid at all costs unless you like watching movies where you are constantly fast forwarding because the scenes are drug out so long where nothing happens. This movie should never have been made. This is even worse than the Netflix movies. I would rate this travesty zero stars if I could but even that would be too many. I feel dumber for having watched this and I award you no points.

It leaves a lot of things unanswered. And I don't mind that.
Otkon4 February 2024
It's a rather simple story along the lines of Gaslight. Or is it? Mwah-hahaha. You'll get the idea. And then again you won't because there are so many little things that are just left unexplained.

Like the whole cousins thing. And the fishing dude. And the roadkill. The bed lady. Who dun the thing that caused the issue to begins with? Why was the dog named Minnow? The game of Charades and the dinnerware connection. And pretty much everything. To the point where you won't know up from down.

But I suppose that is the point.

Of course the entire time you will be looking at the lead actoring guy (whose fake real world name is Kentucker Audley - yes, he's a pretentious mumblecore filmmaker) and you will be thinking "hey, that's not Logan Marshall Green - who is also not Tom Hardy".

And now this was something somewhat different that has been watched by me.

Non-horror snooze fest
cmwpmsmj7 February 2024
Who ever placed this film in the horror category should be charged with fraud. An absolutely incoherent, rambling mess. The three main characters are in an open competition to see who can be most unlikable. I wouldn't even be able to label this a drama either, as the only thing dramatic that happened was me wishing my six dollars back. I will say the film was well shot and the production value was solid, which made the trailer catch my eye in the first place. Somehow this is sitting at 91% on rotten tomatoes but I can assure you it is a hoax. Also I can guarantee the "people" on here giving it high scores are studio plants.

Warning: Spoilers
I always enjoy movies like this : just enough given to leave you thinking, little clues to piece together a story, ambiguous turns that leave you confused and when hoping for a typical wrap it up ending, it makes you use your BRAIN instead and really think.

I've never written a review before, but I've read some from movies similar to this that have left me befuddled, and as I researched, I tried to find some reviews that piece together the mystery of a well crafted and well directed movie.

So in the sense of helping those confused, that enjoy a slow burn of a movie that keeps you throughly entertained yet wanting a little more I'll add my two cents.

Now mind you, I've only watched it once and just finished it.

Now the obvious is that the beginning of the movie is the ending, which begs the question is that- what we just witnessed- was that her capture and psychological torture? And did she finally escape her captives.

I come to that conclusion because of the missionary work of her "husband's" family in Korea given to us by the picture on the wall and the tacit conversation about it.

Was she always a mind slave captive by this sanctimonious, over-bearing imperialist family? Does that explain the visions of the old woman in the movie because she is able to remember repressed memories as she becomes more aware of her imprisonment.

This is my first take on this.

There is a reason that the beginning is the ending of the movie, there is a reason the husband tried to kill her, The clues to piece together are their.

I love movies like this, but they are far and few in-between.

Ken.

I'll never get those 2 hours back
deanna-5328519 February 2024
My husband picked this movie, he's notorious for picking bad movies but this was the lowest of the lows.

It's starts off interesting, woman gets kidnapped, woman escapes, woman finds a man in the road and steals his truck and finally gets back home. Her husband takes her away to a family home where his odd cousin shows up. You watch thinking something is about to happen except they play a game, they eat, they may or may not have gone swimming, her husband may have made out with his cousin, there may or may not have been an old woman in the woods, she ends up in a basement then gets out of the basement, then there's more swimming for some unknown reason, then she ends up on a road driving a truck, then stops driving. The end. I wish I could get those 2 hours of my life back it was that bad.

Creepy, slow burn psychological thriller with incredible sound design
jssmqthwx17 February 2024
It seems that most people leaving reviews simply just don't get this movie. Not everything has to be wrapped up in a neat little bow! The performances from the 3 main actors were all amazing. The setting, the music, the sound design, the overall sense of foreboding dread.

I absolutely loved this movie and wish it was easier to find on streaming somewhere so more people could see it.

It'll leave you thinking and speculating at the end but that's one of its strong points in my opinion.

One point that really stands out to me is the sound design and how most of the movie is near silent. Every little sound has a HUGE impact in the absence of unnecessary noise and it makes it all the more scarier. Almost like horror ASMR.

Really excited to see what comes next from this director and these actors.

Ridiculous
heatherjbates18 February 2024
Besides the fact that her bangs never moved and remained one solid block on her forehead in every scene, there was no through line for this plot. It would have been better billed as a Twilight Zone episode. In general, it made zero sense and nothing added up and there were silly eerie props timed with music to make you think something was actually happening and yet nothing, absolutely nothing, was happening.

Pros: you watch it until the end because the whole time you think something might make sense and add up.

Cons: nothing makes sense or adds up and you lost 2 hours of your life you'll never get back.

Maybe the worst movie I've ever seen
alexhawkinsme-8936012 February 2024
I typically approach films with an open mind, understanding that art is subjective, but "Somewhere Quiet" left me bewildered and disappointed. From the outset, the film struggles to establish a coherent narrative, meandering through scenes with little to no purpose. The dialogue attempted to be profound but often felt forced and pretentious, leaving the characters to flounder without depth or relatable qualities.

The cinematography, which could have been the saving grace, was uninspired, failing to capture any visual interest that might have compensated for the lackluster storyline. The pacing was another downfall; what was intended to be slow and suspenseful instead came off as sluggish and tedious.

The performances were equally underwhelming, with actors delivering their lines as if they were just as confused about the film's direction as I was. It's a shame to see talent go to waste, but not even the most skilled performers could have breathed life into such a poorly written script.

"Somewhere Quiet" was a film that I had hoped would offer a peaceful introspection but instead left me with a feeling of restlessness and frustration. It's one cinematic experience I would not recommend, and certainly one I won't revisit.

Art House Installation, that kinda Slow
bettyshields-4328910 May 2024
I watched this and am still confused how no one understands this is not a film but a fringe museum video installation someone might think is artwork in the nether regions of Williamsburg Brooklyn. I could actually feel the inner workings of my retinas slowly decomposing as I watched this, it's that slow. At no pint did I feel any tension or the slightest feeling of fear or for that matter any feeling at all. My legs may have fallen asleep during the film. It's not a horror film and it's not a thriller. It's not engaging in terms of style or storyline. I'm still really confused by this film but not in a good way. I was really excited at the beginning of the film and thought it would continue down the road of what it was doing there but it did not unfortunately.

Uncertainties dragged the movie down
olcayozfirat21 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is classified as horror, but it is a thriller. There is tension and uncertainty in the film that works well. The atmosphere is gloomy. While watching, different scenarios appear in your mind between both the events and the types. So far so good. The dose of tension is also gradually increasing. That's good too.

The movie is produced in 2023. A husband and wife come to a forest house. The news that was seen at the gas station on the way back shows that the woman was kidnapped and detained for a long time. She somehow escaped and escaped from the city with her husband. By the way, a woman, the man's cousin, lived near their house. This woman is no exception. Over time, the kidnapped woman begins to experience strange events.

It is not clear whether what happens in the movie is real or a hallucination.

There's a lot of uncertainty,

How did the woman escape the first time she was kidnapped?

Is the man having an affair with the woman he calls his cousin?

What is that broken plate story?

Who is the man fishing on the beach and hanging out with the woman at the bar and what happened to him?

Are they trying to drive the woman crazy?

What happened to the woman the other woman called her mother?

Who is the old woman wandering around?

Are her husband and the other woman involved in the woman's kidnapping? Or did they deliberately hide the videos after the kidnapping in order to get their money?

What is this sea scene seen in detail?

And most importantly, what happened at the end of the movie?

In other words, the tension that was going well with unanswered questions is suddenly destroyed and the film's score drops because it cannot be understood. It's a shame.

There is no sexuality or nudity in the movie.

Twist and shout
tazkykamen29 March 2024
Creating a quality twist story with a functioning internal logic is not easy. Somewhere Quiet remained somewhere halfway between a failure and an intense experience. The film contains several chilling images, but in most scenes it remains only at the hint of something promising and what is even worse story is predictable. In my opinion, the unreal scenes are not well edited and are the biggest weakness of the film. Marin Ireland plays too affected, Kentucker Audley is bland and Jennifer Kim is unfortunately only average. The ending can be interpreted differently, but I'm not sure if that was the intention.

If you want a slasher go watch something else
darkmomo-818317 February 2024
Because this isn't that. It's slow, meandering, a mind f of a plot that leaves you wondering who's wrong, who's right, and how much of this is even real. Normally, these movies get ruined in the end, but thsi one wasn't. I wanted to explore more and figure out exactly what was going on, but it kind of felt honest that there was no final answer. That her mind is so fragmented and her life is such a twisted ruse that there is no closure. All in all, I really loved this. The lead acted her butt off. The music was creepy and interesting. All of the backdrops were fantastic. There's not much more to say than just watch it. It kept me glued from beginning to end.

Director has a lot of potential
Ria19976 February 2024
I loved the characters, setting, overall suspense of the film and yes the movie is a tad bit too long but it has something refreshing and different. The drawback is that the ending leaves a lot of questions unanswered which kind of makes the movie bland even though the suspense was enough to get me going through the entire movie.

Firstly, Joe was a bit confusing because he had so little screen time and although his character looked interesting like I was waiting for something to happen between him and meg or that he would add more to the storyline but he just disappeared before we get halfway in.

Secondly, Madeline was such a interesting character which I thought would play into some kind of unexpected twist in the end but again, a lot of the story felt unanswered and unfinished but overall I loved how character was so opposite to that of megs.

Honestly in my head if I could make a thriller series I would just put all of these characters and storyline into it because it would make it much more interesting and mysterious because the movie felt like pushing too many good ideas and characters into a 2 hour screen time so you to scrunch it all in.

Creative
erinemileemiller5 February 2024
Acting was superb... beautifully filmed... creative storyline... interesting music choice... location was gorgeous!! It kept me guessing the entire film and was very out of the ordinary. There were "unanswered questions", but aren't there always unanswered questions in life? I'd rather have unanswered questions than a cliche and predictable storyline. If you were really paying attention, I'm sure your questions would mostly be answered. Smart film and I wish there were more like it! If you enjoy films that make you think and you enjoy walking in the woods and really appreciate good acting... do yourself a favor and watch this! Loved it!!

Slow burn thriller
kmwehri25 February 2024
To those giving sh- reviews - they must not get this movie.

This is a very entertaining movie with great acting portrayals and an interesting and unpredictable plot. It has tales of PTSD, trauma, and tells the story of the "final girl" AFTER the movie ends. It's an interpretive movie where you have to use your imagination to decifer what happens. If you'd pay attention everything gets wrapped up in the end but leaves you pondering as well. I love movies like this. Those saying this isn't a horror- This is literally horror. Just not a jump scare gore film. Enjoy the psychological ride it takes you on.

great movie, breaks the mold
mbobrien-2760316 August 2023
This movie was a massive shake up and just what the doctor ordered. It played out as a kind of phenomenological deconstruction of a certain social class and the generational troubles they embody in their exploitative relations with other groups of people from other parts of the world. Full of surprises and refusing to meet expectations, this movie was a journey not to be missed. Early on I was convinced that a certain thing was bound to happen, and kept waiting for it around every corner - but the writing just kept surprising me, and the images and emotions carried the aesthetic to a T. Excellent writing, cinematography, direction, acting. Ten stars.

The best thriller I've seen in years.
jo_henderson-9618215 March 2024
Excellent movie, it left me thinking about it for days.

Highly recommend if you enjoy intelligent, palpably tense, slow burning, menacing, suspense thrillers. I think the people that have given negative reviews probably don't enjoy movies that make you think too much or draw some of your own conclusions. In my view it's a haunting depiction of how suffering a severe trauma "rewires your brain and lives in your body". Meg's struggle to readjust to life after being kidnapped pulled me in and gripped me to the very end. The distrust, the isolation, deciphering what was real or perceived, all of it was brilliant. Incredible writing by Olivia West Lloyd. Incredible acting by Jennifer Kim.
