Premiere Entertainment has acquired the international rights to family faith-based film “The Girl Who Believes in Miracles” after the film’s solid performance at the U.S. box office over Easter.
The Oklahoma-shot feature was written and directed by “Hannah Montana” co-creator Richard Correll and stars Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino (“The Mighty Aphrodite”); Austyn Johnson (“The Greatest Showman”) and celebrated voice actor Pete Coyote (“The Roosevelts: An Intimate History”).
The feature, co-written by G.M. Mercier, focuses on a child called Sara (Johnson) who achieves overnight fame when her prayers appear to start healing local townsfolk.
These miracles come at a cost however, as the toll of fame and the girl’s deteriorating physical condition force those close to her to take action.
Produced by Trailmaker Productions and Gerson Productions in association with film investors Stephen Hays and Peter Graham’s 120dB Films, the title was released via Atlas Distribution to a total of 1,333 U.

Title: For Greater Glory Director: Dean Wright Starring: Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, Eduardo Verastegui, Rubén Blades, Peter O’Toole. The director (and visual effects supervisor) who is best known for fantasy movies such as ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, and ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe,’ tackles an important and neglected moment in history: the Cristero War. “La Cristiada” was an attempted counter-revolution against anti-clericalism of the ruling Mexican government. During the 1920s, the country was thrust into civil war when President Plutarco Calles outlawed Catholicism, banned religious activity, confiscated all church property and exiled clergy. Priests and nuns that protested were arrested or publicly [ Read More ]

Producer Pablo José Barroso has established the privately backed production and finance company based in Mexico City.
The goal is to produce two to four features in the $10-50m range and one to two television series budgeted at $5-10m a year.
All content will be English-language with “positive messaging” for a global audience.
The first two film projects are the animated feature Max & Me and Maccabees, a live-action feature about an ancient Jewish revolt led by Judah Maccabee.
“We are a company that puts material first and will develop and explore inspiring stories and find a way to bring them to the big screen,” said Barroso, who will run the company as CEO alongside producing collaborator Claudia Nemer as COO.
“We believe there is an underserved market for content touting strong values so our ambition is to help fill this void in the marketplace and deliver the highest quality movies and TV product to audiences...

The internet has been buzzing about Filly Brown. The film starring Gina Rodriguez, Lou Diamond Phillips, Edward James Olmos, and Jenni Rivera hit theaters this past Friday and made close to $1.5 million over the weekend. It’s an impressive opening for an independent Latino film.
Historically, Latino films have struggled at the box office but once in a while there’s a breakout hit. Last year’s most successful Latino film Casa de mi Padre, a Spanish-language comedy starring Will Ferrell, Diego Luna, and Gael Garcia Bernal, made $5.9 million. Only two other films were able to surpass the million dollar mark, For Greater Glory starring Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, and Ruben Blades ($5.6 million) and Girl in Progress starring Eva Mendes ($2.6 million). The remaining top grossing Latino films of 2012 each made less than $200,000. (Take into consideration that mainstream Hollywood blockbusters make hundreds of millions of dollars.)
What does it take for a Latino film to hit it big?
It’s hard to predict what makes any film successful but there are a few factors that can help. Last year’s hits all had big name stars. So far this year’s Latino blockbusters (I’m using this term loosely) have also had the benefit of celebrity lead actors, an Oscar nomination, and being adapted from a popular Chicano novel. No, starring Gael Garcia Bernal, grossed $2 million and earned Chile its first ever Best Foreign Language Film nomination. Bless Me Ultima brought Rudolfo Anaya’s beloved book of the same title to the screen and reached $1.5 million.
Is that all it takes, a famous actor?
No, not really. There are lots of examples of films with celebrities attached that bombed at the box office. But, it definitely helps. So does using targeted traditional marketing, getting some good reviews, employing grassroots techniques such as advance screenings to build word of mouth, and engaging audiences with social media. It’s not rocket science; it’s the same for all indie films not just Latino ones. But, despite the fact that Latinos go to movies way more than other ethnic groups marketers have mostly failed at attracting Latino audiences to Latino films, en masse.
What’s been tried in the past?
There was a time in the eighties known as the “Hispanic Hollywood” when major studios distributed films like the smash hit La Bamba ($45 million), Born in East L.A. ($17 million), and Stand and Deliver ($14 million). For the first time they created bilingual marketing campaigns and even circulated film prints that were subtitled or dubbed in Spanish.
In the early nineties, studios moved away from grassroots campaigns and poured their money into English and Spanish-language television advertising. They also hoped for a few good reviews from newspaper critics to help raise a film’s visibility. Towards the late nineties, as it became apparent that Latino films were not likely to be box office hits distributors began to experiment with “hybrid films” that included multiethnic casts and targeted a general audience.
At the turn of the millennium, Latino and Latin American movies experienced a golden era in the States. Films like Frida, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Y Tu Mama Tambien, El Crimen de Padre Amaro, and City of God earned multiple Oscar nominations and millions at the box office. They achieved these numbers by not emphasizing the Latino elements of the films and targeting a more ethnically diverse audience including arthouse moviegoers. Despite the success of these films, a Latino box office slump quickly followed.
What do we do now?
What’s been tried in the past hasn’t worked, except for a few outliers. I personally think that the theatrical distribution of Latino films is a mistake. It is not a moneymaking venture. Yes, Latinos go to the movies a lot but these filmgoers are mostly young English-speaking Latinos who, up until now, have not shown interest in Latino films (in English or Spanish.) But, I do think there is way to make it work, to get Latinos to watch Latino films.
Let’s use what we know about this audience. Latinos watch movies more than other ethnic groups and they are the fastest growing group of internet users. The moviegoers are young, speak English as a first language, and use social media. They also watch a lot of television, in English and Spanish. Recently, the Spanish-language network Univision has been beating out NBC in primetime ratings for the key demographic of adults aged 18-49 (mostly because Latinos love novelas.)
Independent Latino films can’t spend a bunch of money on T.V. ads, print advertising, or make multiple copies to circulate in theaters. So, what’s the magic formula? Maybe a small theatrical run (N.Y. and L.A.) for a weekend preceded by a big bilingual social media push and then followed by a V.O.D. release and online streaming. On demand screenings via Tugg might help build buzz too.
Obviously, it’s all a gamble. Who knows if it will work but I truly believe that the failure to attract Latinos to watch these films is a marketing issue. Talk to Latinos in their language (maybe Spanglish) via media channels that they use (i.e. Facebook and Twitter) and give them the option to watch the film on a small screen as soon as they hear about it. It’s worth a try!
P.S. If anyone wants to give me money to employ this distribution strategy, I gladly welcome it.

The Oscars are almost upon us, and the past few weeks have treated us to the shortlists competing in a number of categories, including Best Animated Feature, Best Visual Effects, Best Documentary, and Best Original Score.
With the nominations announcement creeping ever closer at the start of next month, the Academy have now announced a seventy-five-long list of songs that are eligible in the Best Original Song category.
The list features some absolutely stellar songs that have debuted on the big screen this year, including Adele’s impressive Bond theme, Skyfall.
Tom Hooper’s highly anticipated Les Misérables is also in the running with Suddenly, composed specifically for the film, and it should be great to see how it’s received both by audiences and the Academy in the coming weeks.

There are 75 original songs that qualify for the Oscar this year, but really everyone has been waiting to hear about one.

I mentioned on today's podcast that my three nominees for Best Original Song for the 2013 Critics' Choice Awards were "100 Black Coffins" from Django Unchained, "Skyfall" from Skyfall and "Ladies of Tampa" from Magic Mike. Of my nominees only "Skyfall" made the official list of nominees, but hopefully the Academy will right a couple of wrongs as both "100 Black Coffins" and Matthew McConaughey's "Ladies of Tampa" are among the 75 songs listed as in contention for a nomination at the 2013 Oscars. The Academy just released the following list of which all voting members of the Music Branch will receive a Reminder List of works submitted in the category and a DVD copy of the song clips. Members will be asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in the category. So far, we’ve had the shortlists for the Best Animated Feature, the Best Visual Effects, and the Best Documentary categories.
Now the Academy has announced the list of 104 films that are eligible in the Best Original Score category, and it’s going to be very interesting to see what makes the final cut come nominations time next month.
I think Hans Zimmer’s score for The Dark Knight Rises is, hopefully, a lock, because it is amazing. I also loved James Horner’s score for The Amazing Spider-Man, but can’t decide whether or not I think it will earn a nomination.
Alexandre Desplat has three films in the running this year, with Argo, Rise of the Guardians,...

As far as I'm concerned, the two most memorable scores of the year belong to Cloud Atlas and Beasts of the Southern Wild. That said, I made an egregious and unforgivable mistake when filling out my Critics' Choice nominations and forgot to include not one of them, but Both of them! Shame. I feel it. Now I have to hope my fellow Bfca members came through where I failed. However, we will discuss Critics' Choice nominations more on the upcoming episodes of the RopeofSilicon podcast, for now we're talking Oscar as the Academy has released a complete list of all 104 original scores competing for Best Original Score at the 2013 Oscars. I have not yet posted my predictions for Best Original Score and while I am making a fuss above concerning Cloud Atlas and Beasts of the Southern Wild, I think both of those stand a very strong chance at a nomination this year.

An angry Mexican with a thick black moustache and a Marriachi uniform of sorts strides into a bar. The camera focuses on his destabilizing eyes and zooms into his face. Down at each end-tip of the villain.s long-hanging facial hair-handles, are two teeny-tiny guns (made possible thanks to the wonders of CGI).
With a piercing, dangerous gaze over at the .Mexican cliché.s. at the bar, the walking embodiment of a .Mexican cliché. shoots down the stereotypes around him.
The villain-cum-hero blows the smoke from each gun . one hanging left and the other right of his face on his moustache. .Why am I angry?. he asks. .Because I am Meh-i-hano. And Mexico is much more than just clichés..
And so the message of the Hola Mexico Film Festival trailer is revealed: Mexico is not just sombreros, tequila and bad westerns. According to the director of the film festival, currently travelling around Australia,...

Miami, Sep 20 (Ians/Efe) Mexican actor Eduardo Verastegui says that he does not see his profession as a springboard to money and fame, but rather as a type of priesthood that allows him to advance through life carrying "the flag of love".
In his latest work, "For Greater Glory", Verastegui plays the real-life hero Anacleto Gonzalez Flores, who fought against Mexico's secular government seeking religious freedom.

O'Toole was nominated eight times for the Best Actor Academy Award, though never won. In 2003 he received an honorary Oscar for his body of work. Most recently, he appeared in "For Greater Glory: The True Story of Cristiada" with Eva Longoria and Andy Garcia. He's also appeared in several episodes of Showtime's "The Tudors" as Pope Paul III.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brings you the Oscars (yep, that's why they're called Academy Awards), and on Friday, the organization announced that it was prepared to invite 176 new folks to its fold.
In a list posted on its website, the Academy deemed Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Terrence Malick, Jonah Hill, Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and a host of other film luminaries worthy of inclusion in its nearly 6,000-member army.
The Academy has drawn the ire of critics who bemoan its overwhelmingly male, white population. A Los Angeles Times investigation found that of all Academy members, 94 percent are Caucasian and 77 percent are male. A mere 2 percent are black, with Latinos constituting an even smaller portion. Only 14 percent of members are under the age of 50.
Full members of the Academy select and vote on Oscars nominees. The organization was started in 1927 and is now governed by a 43-person board.

Eva Longoria has spoken about the importance of diversity in television and film. The actress found success after starring as Gabrielle in ABC's Desperate Housewives, which wrapped up its series finale in May. Speaking at the Monte Carlo Television Festival, the actress noted that Latinos are "still under-represented" but offered suggestions on how that can be improved. "I think we still have a lot more work to do," Longoria said. "In the United States we're 16% of the population, but we're only maybe 10% represented in television and films, so we're still under-represented. "That's why it's important for Latinos to tell these stories like For Greater Glory. Devious Maids is another one - it's about four Latina maids. "It's important for us to support those shows as Latinos - to stop (more)...

It looked like Ridley Scott was going to pull off a huge win Halfway through the weekend with his return to sci-fi Prometheus, but Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted leapfrogged ahead Saturday night for a massive $60 million opening. The power of being a family film, having a much shorter running time, and playing to nearly 1,000 more theaters ultimately gave the animated film the edge. Prometheus finished second with an equally strong $51 million, becoming the 10th highest opening for an R-rated movie. Both films benefitted from smart viral campaigns, which drove up the awareness of each as they headed into the competitive weekend.
Prometheus staged Ted-like talks with Guy Pearce in character as a young Peter Weyland touting his research and development. Between these essential videos and addictive trailer/TV spots, Prometheus had great midnight numbers Thursday night, which gave it a $21.8 million Friday. But word began to travel of its polar effect.

Directed by Rupert Sanders, and starring The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2‘s Kristen Stewart, Thor‘s Chris Hemsworth, Prometheus‘ Charlize Theron (as Ravenna, picture), and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides‘ Sam Claflin, Snow White and the Huntsman easily took the crown at the North American box office this past weekend. [See also Snow White And The Huntsman International Box Office, Snow White And The Huntsman vs. Mirror Mirror.] According to box-office actuals found at Box Office Mojo, Swath took in $56.21m at 3,773 venues, or a tiny bit less than studio estimates. Its per-theater average was $14,900, particularly remarkable for a 2-hour+ 2D movie. Also worth noting is that Snow White and the Huntsman grossed more than the next three movies (Men in Black III, The Avengers, Battleship) combined. It also grossed more than twice Men in Black 3‘s second-weekend take, $28.07m (-48% — which isn’t really bad, considering that the previous Sunday had preceded a major holiday). When Universal Studios asked the magic mirror who would be the fairest movie in all the land this weekend, it replied, “None other than your own, Snow White and the Huntsman.”
The dark adaptation of the classic fairy tale bumped Men in Black 3 off of the throne with a $56 million opening weekend. It was a slight surprise considering Snow White opened to just 3,773 theaters, a wide release certainly, but not as wide as Mib 3, which was still playing in nearly 500 more theaters than Snow White. Universal was able to receive some redemption after Battleship flopped and while it wasn’t the perfect film, we have to say that it was worth it to see Charlize Theron’s performance.

Despite some last minute worries about the box office potential of Snow White and the Huntsman, Universal Pictures came away from the weekend smiling as the movie managed to open with a magical $56.3 million. That makes it the fourth highest debut of 2012 and gives it a better start than Men in Black 3 (not to mention the year's other Snow White film Mirror, Mirror, which opened to just $18 million). Mib 3 and The Avengers fell to #2 and #3 respectively, while Battleship and The Dictator rounded out the top 5. For Greater Glory also came out of nowhere to jump into the top 10 this week, possibly helped by religious groups in support of its Christian message. Elsewhere, Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom continued its strong performance in select theatres, while Piranha 3Dd actually did the opposite. Next weekend, Prometheus will be put to the test. 1. "Snow White and the Huntsman" proved to be the fairest of them all at the box-office this past weekend. Universal Pictures' action retelling of "Snow White" opened strongly at No. 1 with $56.3 million. Hollywood was expecting about $30 million for the flick starring "Twilight's" Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron as Queen Ravenna, and Chris Hemsworth as the Hunstman.
Overseas, "Snow White" sold $39.3 million of box-office tickets for a grand total of $95.6 million in its debut weekend.
Previous weekend's box-office champ, "Men in Black 3," fell to No. 2 with $29.3 million. Starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, the threequel which added Josh Brolin to the mix has raised its domestic total to $112.3 million after two weekends and $78.6 million overseas for a grand total of $386.9 million. "Mib 3" took the top spot in the international market for this past weekend.
Meanwhile, Disney's superhero extravaganza, Marvel's "The Avengers," proved that it has strong legs amid competition.

Snow White and the Huntsman didn't exactly receive a fairy tale debut at the box office, but the latest cinematic retelling didn't come up short either. Earning over $56 million it easily took first place, but needs at least one more solid weekend to push into profitability against its weighty $170 million budget. Meanwhile The Avengers hit two more major mile markers this weekend. With $552 million in domestic sales it surpassed The Dark Knight to become the third all-time highest grossing film. As well, with over $1.3 billion in sales world-wide it also pushed into the number three spot on that chart. It has a long way to go and a very slim chance of topping the number two movie on both charts. Titanic holds a firm grip on its position with $658 million domestic and over $2.1 billion world-wide. Chicago – “For Greater Glory” attempts to bring back the David Lean style epic – even recruiting Peter O’Toole from “Lawrence of Arabia” to participate – in the story of a Mexican religious war in the 1920s. While a sincere effort, it can’t match the story to the epic history. The cast includes Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria and Bruce Greenwood.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Without knowledge of this 20th century footnote, the premise of an atheist president outlawing the Catholic Church in Mexico seems impossible now, but that is what happened. The acting is mucho heartfelt, as the cast works diligently to portray an important piece of history. Andy Garcia strikes a perfect balance between his heroic stance and the conflict his character feels about religion in the first place, but the film is muddled and focuses on story elements that are not as compelling as the main conflict.

Chicago – Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron dominated at the box office this past weekend, as “Snow White and the Huntsman” made an estimated $56.3 million in three days, more than good enough for first place. The film is already close to crossing the $100 million mark internationally and is a definite hit, notching the second-highest three-day total of the season after “The Avengers.”
The success of “Snow White” demolished the rest of the market as most other films fell more than 40%. “Men in Black 3” was down over 46% and has made $112.3 million domestically in ten days and a total of $387 million worldwide. Snow White, Agent J, and Thor dominated the field as the top three films made significantly more than the rest of the top ten.
In interesting news, Fox Searchlight’s “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” continues to expand impressively, climbing up to 6th place and “Moonrise Kingdom” lurks just outside...

Universal may have struck out with Battleship, but Snow White and the Huntsman is off to a good start with $56 million. In second place is Men in Black 3 with $29.3 million and a total domestic gross of $112 million since opening.
The Avengers was the only other film on the list to earn over $20 million and is now 3rd on the list of unadjusted all-time domestic grosses, behind Titanic and Avatar. While the film could hang out in theaters long enough to pass Titanic’s $658 million, it’s hard to imagine The Avengers getting close enough to Avatar‘s $760 million.
Piranha 3Dd opened in theaters this week, but as it only played in 86 theaters around the country, you may have missed it. The film earned $179,000 in theaters this weekend, but was also released on-demand at the same time. Next week’s big genre release is Prometheus, and while we expect it to open big,...

Queen Ravenna and The Runaway as I prefer to call it seized the box office kingdom with ease this weekend. It helps when no other big movie dares question your right to the throne. Given that the last Snow White picture Mirror Mirror didn't open even half as well, it's left to us to wonder: What accounts for the fair princess's drawing power this time around?

Mexican-born actor Eduardo Verastegui tells CineMovie why his latest movie, based on a true story in Mexico's dark past, changed his life. He hopes movie-goers will feel the same about For Greater Glory.
Watch video interview below
For Greater Glory centers on the real-life Mexican civil war known as the Cristero War or La Cristiada in the 1920s when the Mexican president enacted a religious persecution against Catholics. Eduardo tells CineMovie's Fernando Esquivel this part of Mexican history was not taught in schools in Mexico, assuming the country tried to hide its dark past.
Starring with Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria ("Desperate Housewives"), Oscar Isaac (Sucker Punch), Catalina Sandino Moreno, Peter O'Toole (Lawrence of Arabia) and Ruben Blades as President Plutarco Elias Calles, Eduardo plays Anacieto Gonzales Flores, one of the men responsible in hiring Garcia's character General Enrique Gorostieta Velarde to

Any worry that Snow White and the Huntsman would only appeal to young girls wound up being completely unfounded*the revisionist fairy tale played well across all demographics, and easily claimed the top spot at the box office this weekend. Mib 3 and The Avengers did fine business in second and third, while Mexican historical drama For Greater Glory wasn't all that great in its nationwide release. The Top 12 earned $134.6 million this weekend, which is off 12 percent from the same period last year. Snow White and the Huntsman opened at 3,773 locations and grossed a strong $56.2 million. That's the fourth-highest debut this year behind The Avengers, The Hunger Games and The Lorax, and above last weekend's Mib 3. It's also more than Universal's Battleship has made through 17 days ($55.4 million), and is close to previous Snow White movie Mirror Mirror's entire run ($62.9 million). Among other comparable titles, Snow White obviously didn't come close...

Snow White and the Huntsman was awoken to the tune of $56.3 million this weekend, according to studio estimates. That’s a big win for Universal Pictures, especially considering that the studio’s last film, the sinking big-budget bomb known as Battleship, opened to less than half that amount two weeks ago.
Snow White also marked the best debut for star Kristen Stewart outside the Twilight franchise, and the second-best start for Charlize Theron after Hancock. The film skewed female, but just barely, as 53 percent of its crowd consisted of women. The PG-13 revisionist fairy tale was also pretty evenly split between younger and older moviegoers,...

<< Continued from "'Snow White' Takes Big Bite Out of Box Office Apple"The Avengers dropped 44 percent to $20.5 million, which is the fourth-highest fifth weekend ever behind Avatar, Titanic and The Sixth Sense. On Friday, the superhero team-up passed The Dark Knight ($533.3 million) to move up to third place on the all-time domestic chart, and on Sunday it passed $550 million in a record 31 days (it took Avatar 38 days). To date, The Avengers has earned $552.95 million, and it's still on pace for around a $600 million total. Battleship took another big hit this weekend, plummeting 54 percent to $5.1 million. Its 17-day total reached $55.4 million, which is off from John Carter's $62.4 million through the same point. The Dictator fell 49 percent to $4.7 million for a total of $50.8 million. It could still pass Bruno's $60.05 million, but it's definitely not taking the trophy for first R-rated comedy hit of Summer 2012. In sixth place, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel dipped 30 percent to $4.5 million,...
