Heading into May, the UK's Horror Channel have a number of impressive UK premieres up their sleeves - including Sean Hogan's terrifically chilling The Devil's Business (review here) and Keith Wright's touching and modest Harold's Going Stiff.

Keith Wright's very funny and surprisingly touching tale investigates a mystery illness turning men in the north of England into something resembling bloodthirsty ghouls. One such victim is Harold (Stan Rowe), an old man whose transformation into something sub-human might just be arrested by the love of Penny (Sarah Spencer), a dedicated home care nurse. Emmerdale actors Dominic Brunt and Mark Charnock are to host a Zombie Film Festival in Leeds for a sixth consecutive year.
The pair, who play friends Paddy Kirk and Marlon Dingle on the ITV1 soap, will screen a collection of movies featuring the walking dead at the Cottage Road Cinema in Headingley on Sunday, April 21.
Six films - a mix of modern and classic movies - will be shown over 12 hours at the event, which runs from midday to midnight. One film in particular called Before Dawn is very close to Brunt's heart as he starred and directed in it.
Brunt said: "Mark and I have been spending our time arguing and fighting over the lineup and it's a strong year mixing foreign, classic and brand new. Every single film is a crowd pleaser.
"Also, I cannot wait to show Before Dawn to its own rightful crowd as we couldn't show it last year.

"Build it and they will come". That was very much the philosophy that led to the creation of Screen Stockport Film Festival around two years ago. What started out as making a short film with my friends, turned into a desire to create a film festival in Stockport to give fellow young filmmakers an opportunity to share their films with an audience.
Screen Stockport was then born, with the ambition of it becoming an inclusive, grassroots film festival for filmmakers of all ages and experiences. I wanted to give young people who aspired to have a career in the media an environment to share their passion and enthusiasm with other creatives and connect with industry professionals from the North West.

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry (15)
(Alison Klayman, 2012, Us) Ai Weiwei, Danqing Chen, Ying Gao. 91 mins
Art and activism merge in this fascinating inside portrait of China's best known artist, which conveys both the roots of Ai's provocations and the authorities' paranoid responses to them. He comes across as a fearless creator, a reluctant hero, a committed campaigner and a fallible human being, treading a perilous line between the adoring global art market and China's Kafkaesque state apparatus.

Ted (15)
(Seth MacFarlane, 2012, Us) Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane, Joe McHale, Giovanni Ribisi. 106 mins
Those unconvinced by MacFarlane's Family Guy cartoon series will be even less convinced by his first feature – basically a routine manchild/bromance story with one novel idea: Wahlberg has a magic talking teddy, which has grown up into an obnoxious party animal – thus creating relationship issues with shrewish girlfriend Kunis. It's all gags and no comedy. And if you're anything other than white, male and pop culture-literate, you'll find the humour at best patchy, at worst, downright nasty.
Sound Of My Voice (15)
(Zal Batmanglij, 2011, Us) Christopher Denham, Nicole Vicius, Brit Marling. 85 mins
As with Another Earth, co-writer Marling takes an unorthodox line through a familiar genre here. This time she's a spacey/scary cult leader who claims to be from the year 2054. A couple of investigative journalists get out of their depth taking her on.

★★★☆☆ Bravely attempting to shake the onset of rigor mortis from the tired and overcrowded zombie sub-genre, Keith Wright's low-budget British zom-com Harold's Going Stiff (2011) displays a surprising amount of heart and tenderness for a film of its ilk. Utilising the tried-and-tested mockumentary format (though not confined to it for the film's entirety), we watch on as titular Oap Harold Gimble (Stan Rowe) slowly succumbs to Onset Rigors Disease (Ord), a neurological virus sweeping through the nation's male populace.

Today's selected trailer of the day at the Sydney Film Festival is the zombie comedy Harold's Going Stiff. About the film: Fashioned in the style of a BBC regional documentary about a sensitive local health issue, Keith Wright's very funny and surprisingly touching tale investigates 'Onset Rigors Disease', a mystery illness turning men in the north of England into something resembling bloodthirsty ghouls. Far removed from the shuffling hordes of Dawn of the Dead and the sprinting flesh-eaters of Zombieland, the semi-dead creatures here are geezers like Harold, a lovely old man whose gradual transformation into something sub-human might just be arrested by the love of Penny, a dedicated home care nurse looking to put a little zing into her love life. Austin Film Festival is over for another year. This year I saw fewer films than I have in the past, but I have to say I'm really proud of the way Austin and Texas were represented overall. The newly re-named and expanded Texas Independents program was a big hit.
I didn't get much of a chance to see films that didn't have a local connection, but thankfully I did get a chance to see the delightfully poignant Harold's Going Stiff (writer/director Keith Wright pictured above with an unknown Aff guest). I was also pleasantly surprised with Sironia, which hopefully will play again in Austin soon, as it was a real crowd pleaser with some outstanding music. You Hurt My Feelings was a surprise because it's such a sneaky little quiet movie, one that may be the breakout film for Steve Collins and John Merriman (pictured below).

Just when you thought the Brits had cornered the market on reinventing the zombie genre, writer/director Keith Wright brings us a fresh new take in Harold's Going Stiff, which won the Austin Film Festival Narrative Feature Competition this week.
Using a mockumentary structure, Wright introduces us to pensioner Harold (Stan Rowe), whose stiffening joints and painful muscles aren't merely old age. he titular Harold is the first known sufferer of "O.R.D." or Onset Rigor Disease, an infliction that starts with painfully stiffened muscles and ends up with the classic diminished intelligence, lack of speech and violence of a zombie-like state. His new visiting nurse Penny (Sarah Spencer) cheerfully tortures Harold with painful therapies to help him keep the disease from progressing. In the meantime, controversy reigns over vigilantes hunting down the afflicted who've reached the final stage of the disease.

Wow, spellcheck just exploded there with zomedy but what better way can there be to explain the new feature film Harold's Going Stiff from writer and director Keith Wright. The idea of the zombie comedy is nothing new but there seems to be an abundance of low budget flicks in the pipe for the genre...
Harold's Going Stiff was shot entirely on a digital Slr camera in about 6 days. It's also coming out of the UK and it's going to be hard not to compare it to Colin. Another low budget zombie flick. Harold's Going Stiff looks great and it was a surprise to learn it was all shot on a camera that most people probably have kicking around their house.
Here's the plot synopsis from the official site. "Lonely pensioner, Harold Gimble, has become the first man to suffer from a new neurological disease that is slowly turning him into a zombie-like state.

New zombie comedy coming from the UK!
Bloody-Disgusting gets credit for hunting down the trailer for Harold's Going Stiff, a new zombie comedy from British writer/director Keith Wright. Here's the synopsis:
Lonely pensioner, Harold Gimble, has become the first man to suffer from a new neurological disease that is slowly turning him into a zombie-like state. Harold’s hermit-like existence is shaken up when a vivacious nurse, Penny Rudge, is sent along to alleviate his stiffness. Her ‘special’ massage techniques work a treat on Harold and they become close friends.
