What happened?
amgreaves127 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
First let me say I love Melissa & Joey. Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence are great in this show and make the whole love/hate relationship funny. The first 2 seasons were great. The first season had 30 episodes and the second had 15. I get that considering Melissa was pregnant and had her baby just before the second season ended. But I digress, the reason I named this review "What happened?" is because of the 3rd season. Where is Stephanie? Why isn't there anymore Toledo crisis Mel has to face? Are there new writers or something? The 3rd season is focusing mostly on relationships with Mel and some random guy and Joey with some random girl, even Lennox with too many boyfriends to count. I loved Ryder's gf Holly, too bad she dumped him. Well anyway I miss the other topics rather than fixing or not fixing relationships. Since I am a die-hard Melissa & Joey fan I will still DVR every episode, but they need to get back to roots that made this show great in the beginning.

Sweet, funny and sadly underrated
mush_disaster8 September 2013
Melissa and Joey tells the everyday life of young councilwoman Melissa Burke as she becomes legal guardian of her teenage nephew - Ryder - and niece - Lennox; and Joe Longo, a successful businessman who, after falling victim to a scheme and losing everything, becomes Melissa's male nanny, or "manny" - much to his own frustration.

What could seem like a bland show actually reveals itself as sweet and very funny! The characters go wonderfully together, each of their distinct personalities is adorable enough to fall in love with. Melissa's childishness and apparent ADHD brings a lot of energy to the show. Combined with Joe's charming sarcasm and egocentricity, Ryder's adorable and innocent goofiness and Lennox's selfish yet nurturing concerns about the world makes Melissa and Joey delightfully entertaining, a pleasure to watch!

Give it a try...
redster2611 January 2013
I would actually give this show 7.5,but since IMDb doesn't allow that,I'll go with 8.This show is based on a very peculiar concept: I mean, male nanny who was once a trader but was then hired by a politician to take care of her niece and nephew: who's dad was the reason the man was reduced to what he became? It's an impossible situation. But if you can get past that,it's a good show with some good quality entertainment that hasn't disappointed so far.It has potential, which means we can always look forward to better episodes. It's a light hearted comedy,so i suggest everyone to look at it that way rather than comparing it to other sitcoms or questioning it's plausibility. So if you are ever bored and want a good show to pass your time: You have it!

Miss these kinds of shows
a_filmcritter25 May 2021
Melissa & Joey is my comfort show. I can always turn it on and I'll have a fun time watching it. The characters, story line for the episodes, and of course the humor. I do miss simple shows like this these days.

Retro and FUN!
oddity9411 May 2013
I've been reading comments about how this show is copying bla, bla, bla. I just want to say that there is so many shows on so many different topics already recorded that its hard to come up with fresh ones. I really like this show it has a really good background story but actors are so much more. They seem to be born for these roles. I mean Mel and Joey are just perfect, plus Ryder and Lennox are such a great success. My point is that if you copy some show and you make it worse that is lame, but if you manage to make it this great that my friends takes some skill and commitment. I have watched all seasons of FRIENDS, Supernatural, Joey(from friends), Seinfeld, The big bang theory and a lot more but i've got to say that this show IS WORTH OF EVERY SECOND of your life. . I just want to thank to actors and writes for doing that great of a job. And i'm hoping for a lot more seasons with Melissa and joey.

So who's the boss
bkoganbing28 June 2013
Being that Melissa&Joey is on the ABC Family Network certain parameters will have to be observed. Still this 21st century somewhat warmed over version of Who's The Boss does have its appeal. And not like Melissa Joan Hart formerly of Sabrina The Teenage Witch and Joey Lawrence formerly of Blossom haven't got experience in the G rated world.

Melissa is a City Councilman who's life is already in a fishbowl and a family scandal sent her sister and brother-in-law fleeing leaving their two kids with her. Budding bad girl Taylor Spreitler and class nerd Nick Robinson. Given their types different issues and plot situations will come up for each.

Former commodities trader Joey Lawrence comes into their lives, his life one that was ruined by her family takes the job as a nanny, just like Tony Danza did with Joanna Kerns back in the day. Danza must have coached Lawrence for the part. No Brooklyn accent, but Lawrence has the rest of Danza down pat.

Melissa&Joey has already lasted three seasons and it's pleasant enough entertainment. Not terribly demanding but nice to see.

Delightful Show!
kspears-33 October 2010
I have just fallen in love with this new delightful show...Ever since her days as the lovable Clarissa Explains it All and Joey's Blossom, I have loved these actors. So glad to see them acting together in a well-written family show. The cultural references add a nice touch, but it's not overdone. The story is relevant to today's audiences, but not in a ridiculous unbelievable way. The sets are lovely, costumes fun and well styled, dialogue witty and smart. It's fresh and fun, sweet and light, and the characters are really likable. Better than almost everything I've seen from the big networks' fall lineup! This should be a must-watch for anyone looking for a great half hour of television!

What happened?
grif0220-220-97475623 January 2015
Up until now I would have given a 10 star rating. I do not like the actress that is playing Joes daughter, I am not sure why they even had to add this character. Did the show take off so well you got carried away? What happened to Holly? What happened to Mel's job and those issues at the office, what happened to her office? Maybe you married them too soon. I will be surprised if there is another season after this one and its only been two shows so far this season. I think if someone doesn't fix something I am afraid you will look back and see that you moved way too fast on this one. I really like these two together but its just not the same anymore. I only look forward to Baby Daddy now, if M&J were on AFTER that show I would probably be turning it off now. Sad. =(

ABC Family has Struck GOLD with Melissa and Joey
Mohammedsiddiqijr4 June 2012
I actually look forward to watching ABC Family because of this show,Its nice to see a couple on TV with as much chemistry as Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence. Taylor Spreitler and Nick Robinson add fresh faces and believable characters to an already awesome cast. Love watching the characters develop and come into their own. They actually tackle everyday family issues but without having to revert to terribly fake conversations you often saw characters have in 90's sitcoms. I grew up learning more from Mr. Feeny than I did from most of my teachers until I got to College, this show gives me hope the world will be filled with more Aunt Mel's than Kim Kardashians.

perfectly likable sitcom
SnoopyStyle5 August 2015
Melissa Burke (Melissa Joan Hart) is a local councilwoman in Toledo. She's forced to take in her niece Lennox (Taylor Spreitler) and nephew Ryder Scanlon (Nick Robinson) when the kids' father run off with company money. The financial scandal ruined Joe Longo (Joseph Lawrence)'s career who was actually a honest successful trader in the company. After Joe confronted Melissa publicly, she ends up hiring him as her live-in nanny.

With Melissa and Joey, this has two veterans of successful broad teen sitcom shows. The two younger actors are charming and lovely. It is a very nice cast and it is a perfectly likable sitcom. They have a fun chemistry together. There is no risk. It is an easy to digest half hour show. The show started off relatively PG but it soon added more sex jokes as the kids grew up.

Fine new comedy
studioAT2 August 2014
This show just debuted recently here in the UK and like a lot of people I'm sure I really only watched the first episode to see how Melissa Joan Hart looked now.

The answer is that she looks great and more importantly she acts very well in this smartly written sitcom.

It's one that doesn't go too over the top with it's situation and the laughs seem to come naturally from the characters themselves. Hart has always been a natural comedienne and although Joey Lawrence is good in his role (as well as the teen characters not being too annoying) with this new (I know the show has been going a while in the US) role and makes up for perhaps episodes where the story isn't as strong. It's good to see old faces you grew up watching doing so well.

Adorable and very well casted.
sesimonton12 September 2020
Love Melissa and Joe together. Always thought they are an adorable screen couple. The chemistry these two share of knowing each other their whole lives shine on screen. Everyone works perfectly together. It's awesome seeing all the guest appearances and hearing all the one liners that bring their past shows into this one.

A funny show
taylorkingston2 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I'm sad that this show got cancelled, but it did get four seasons, which is pretty good for sitcoms nowadays. So overall, I'm happy with what I got.

This show is about Mel Burke, a local politician, who has to take in her niece, Lennox, and her nephew, Ryder, after her sister goes to jail. She realizes that she needs help, so she hired Joe Longo, a former big-shot, to take care of the teenagers, and cook, and clean. Eventually, she falls in love with him, and stuff happens.

Overall, I give this TV show an 7 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Great.

Bad script, bad acting.
dlivingstone022 December 2012
Very amateurish in both acting and script content. The canned laughter all over these unfunny lines makes the whole thing extremely cringe-worthy. There is no connection between the characters, this makes it very difficult to feel any empathy for the characters. The main plot is contrived and expected, girl doesn't like boy, boy doesn't like girl, awkward situation ensues in which they have to get along and live together. There are a number of specific issues, for example, any time that they are on the telephone, they do not allow enough time for the imagined response. It may sound harsh, but it appears Melissa Joan Hart has forgotten how to act.

The best comedy TV series on air
alexander_23 January 2012
I can definitely say that Melissa & Joey is the most exciting comedy TV series on television at the moment.

Certainly, the show's formula for success is the chemistry between the two main characters, smartly brought together again by ABC Family after starring in another successful TV comedy - My Fake Fiancé.

The dialogue is smart and funny, the stories are very interesting, and moreover, presented in an entertaining way.

The show is an excellent way to just sit and relax for 30 minutes. Luckily, ABC Family gave it a green light, ordering 30 episodes for the first season, with a second one upcoming. I highly recommend Melissa & Joey to everyone; it is suitable to be watched with friends, family, or simply by yourself when you need distraction from your daylife.

A lot of fun
sheilaholland124 January 2014
I came across this programme whilst staying in New York and found I really enjoyed it. I am very fussy about the TV programmes I watch so it was nice to see Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence, two actors I grew up watching. The themes and ideas are brilliant and love the role reversal aspect. Melissa's character is so out there and Joey does think he is god's gift to women, which makes it so easy to laugh at them. But, you do feel the love in the family despite this and I think it has been executed very well. It tugs at the heartstrings very well and really makes you want the characters to be happy, which I've not felt from a programme in so long. Of course the ideas are out there, which makes it so much easier to laugh at, this is a comedy after all. This may not be for everyone but I have really enjoyed it and have watched every episode so far.....

60% a really sitcom
xhidden9919 May 2015
The first 2.5 seasons were really nice. Great acting, writing. Very breezy and easy to watch and enjoy. It looked going in it would be able to stave off the sitcom cliché blahs. For 2.5 seasons it held up. Then mid season 3 it crashed bad. I guess they ran out of ideas or writers or talent or the execs punted. Who knows but it blew up big time. Every cliché every mediocrity every painful tired wrung out trick. Talk too fast. Every line shouted and screamed. The stories went straight in the toilet and relied solely on that sitcom warhorse, the lie. The lie is where some family member has to be "protected" by a massive bizarre days long lie and all the hysterical hijinks that result. Because after you see that a million times it only gets funny.

Great straight funny forward show
usaon1 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This show is one the best shows on TV right now.

I first heard about the show when it debuted but just started watching and it is hilarious.

I love that this show is just a great written multi camera show and not one of those boring and stale, democratic-liberal single camera crap shows, which are only watchable by democratic-liberal college kids.

This show is just very well written like sitcoms used to be and are starting to be again. The acting between Melissa and Joey is just great. They have such a great chemistry. The last couple on TV that had that kind of chemistry was Tom Allen and Patricia Richardson.

On the trivia site it says they now each other since they were 5 and you can really see that in the show.

This show should be on the regular ABC.

Right now it seems like the cable networks make funnier shows than what's mostly on the broadcast nets. I also like the shows TV land is making right now. Like the exes for example which is just hilarious, the fist season was great but now in the second season they are just hilarious. If you like this show you should definitely give TV lands shows a try.

Good show but already repeats
mariedaly66315 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Melissa and Joey is a pretty new TV show in Ireland and I follow it since it started here as I like it, but unfortunately I stopped watching it because it's repeating episodes already and more than twice the same episode!! that's embarrassing. When I watched it for the first time I loved it as I used to watch Melissa when she was in a different TV show when I was very young where she was a teenage witch and it reminded me of my childhood. When Melissa and Joey started I felt that finally there was something fresh and new on TV as everything else it's already finished so they repeat over and over. However it didn't take too long for this new TV show Melissa and Joey to repeat the first episodes already. I gave it a try a few times but it was certainly repeating too many times so I am not watching it any more.

Melissa and Joey is *******Awesome!!!!!!
delbertrose843 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
So I recently watched Melissa and Joey Pilot, and i'll be damned now i am watching season 3 and it is still just so great!!!! I find this show a refreshing comedy that is just adult enough to make you feel justified in watching a show on ABC family, Which again i am surprised about. I find myself cracking up at everything that Burke and Longo do. I have always considered Melissa Hart a funny person and have enjoyed watching most of her previous works. Now in this Comedy she plays a funny ex party girl politician which oddly enough i can believe. It is amazing to see how well Mrs. Hart plays "Aunt Mel". I find myself literally rolling on the floor laughing at every little expression and movement that she does because with her it goes beyond just speaking funny jokes. Melissa sells the disdain and smart-ass comments so well. As far as Joey he is just as funny. I think that he plays off Melissa so well that i can actually believe every unsaid thing between them and all the jokes are just that much funnier because of these 2. I would say watch this and be ready to literally die laughing it is an amazing show and i will be watching this show until the end of it which i hope is many years from now!!!

Fun, light classical sit-com with one obvious flaw
almqvist_199213 February 2014
"Melissa and Joey" delivers the kind of easy situational comedy that one can always watch, no matter what mood you're in. The characters work well together and the concept lends itself to some funny episode-plots.

The show has one great flaw in one of the lead characters though. Joey's traits of being smug, arrogant and extremely judgemental serves a purpose in the comical banter going on in sit-coms like this. But this actor takes it too far, making some epiodes unbearable to watch. He's THAT obnoxious!

Once an actor gives off that vibe, however you wish to define it, it ruins the character forever. Luckily the remaining cast carries through and Joey himself has his moments of pure comedy, and so I keep watching it. But Joey's obnoxious characteristics are there, every single episode they bother me(...and hopefully others, I do think this review would represent more viewers than me). His "unlikeability" and creepy nature is unfit for a sit-com.

Oh, God, why?
kiddaviator28 June 2012
I've never groaned so much over a television show. I can't believe this sad excuse for a script actually made it to the air.

I'm sorry for the average clichéd, angry review but after watching a full 30 minutes of unrelenting stale comedy, I am left uninspired. I can't imagine a more generic show premise than "She hates him. He hates her. Now they have they have to live together! And they grow to love each other! HOW WACKY!!!!" I feel sick just typing that. I feel sick that there was a writer who couldn't find a more natural transition into one of the most overused plots in television history. The whole show just feels forced like they were trying to hard to jam this show into the formula that they just gave up and said, "SCREW IT! This is taking to long, let's just use every overused 'awww' line ever used and maybe the audience can fill in the blanks." I'm not even mad anymore. I'm just disappointed.

Tolerable at best
sammie_sambal20 December 2014
Yet another generic sitcom that for some reason seems to do quite well with audiences even though it doesn't bring anything new or interesting to the format. So what does it do? Well, It brings 2 relatively beloved faces from the world of sitcom together and lets them fall in love so everyone can go "aaahw". No wait, there's more to it! You didn't think it was that uninspiring did you? Noooo. See, here's the kicker.. SHE has a busy life while also having to take care of her niece and nephew and HE is the young attractive nanny she hires to help out with that. And what do we have? A formula for success. Oh, and they use their real names as well.

Yes, i am being a bit harsh, but i'm just tired of all these uncreative shows littering television now-a-days. And to be completely honest, out of all of them i will say that Melissa & Joey isn't all that bad. When it's on i don't get the overwhelming feeling to find the remote and change the channel, like i have with Anger Management for instance. And that is probably the nicest compliment i can give this show, that i can stomach it.

And that's why i'm still giving it a decent amount of stars. Among all the bland and uninspired shows that are out there at least it's moderately enjoyable. Though i will switch the channel in a heartbeat as soon as Seinfeld/Community/Scrubs/The Big Bang Theory/Friends/Brooklyn Nine- Nine/That '70's Show/Modern Family/Broad City/Parks & Recreation is on.

its 2016 and I'm watching this, but i love it!!!
samanthaanker9 July 2016
I started watching this about three days ago and I'm already halfway done with season three. I love this show and have become addicted to it. The show kind of reminded me of full house, and i loved that show so i thought i might as we all give it a try. Im glad I did! From the very first episode i was sucked onto the world of Melissa and Joey. Now, Im not going to spoil it for everyone, but the show was very captivating and exciting. i think its going to be my summer binge watch(even if that's unhealthy). As the show goes on, you will learn to love all the characters, as I did.(Even if that sounds creepy). All in all, I rated this show a ten out of ten because I felt like I could relate to the characters and the story line always kept me on the edge of my seat. Melissa and Joey also had a great sense of humor, and made me laugh, even if I was having a bad day. If you are looking for a show to start obsessively watching, I would definitely recommend Melissa and Joey. I hope you enjoy the show as much as I did.
