A great opening to series nine
Tweekums20 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The big question at the end of the previous series was would Ros survive? This being Spooks it was of little surprise that this series opener started with her funeral. After the service Harry and Ruth gave us a surprise though; he proposed to her and she gave him evidence that the previous Home Secretary had been involved with the Nightingale conspiracy. He pays the man a visit to deal with him in a permanent manner. The main story of the episode begins with Lucas boarding a cargo vessel with the intention of killing Abib, a senior Al Qaeda operative. This plan has to be abandoned when Somali pirates seize the ship. It turns out that they are working with Abib. He orders the murder of Lucas and Beth Bailey, a woman he believes to be a prostitute, but the two of them turn the tables on their would be executioners and escape. It turns out she is working for a private security firm and has also been following Abib. The two of them must get off the ship to alert Harry about Abib's involvement with the pirates. This leaves one other undercover operative on board the ship to try to slow Abib down. The people at MI5 don't have Abib's target but they have intercepted his communications with a known Al Qaeda hacker who was thought to be based in Pakistan… Ruth however believes he is in London and the team rush to find him. Beth turns up giving them information suggesting the target could be anywhere in the south of England. It is believed the most likely target is parliament; the team must find the hacker and to make him reactivate the security system as the only other solution is to set of an electro-magnetic pulse in the middle of London.

This episode quickly got us back into the action we expect in Spooks; that action was filmed in a way that made it look believable and genuinely dangerous. As always Peter Firth put in a fine performance as Harry, he seemed genuinely world weary after Ros's death. Newcomer Sophia Miles put in a spirited performance as Beth, it looks as if she is going to make a welcome addition to the team. Once the main story was over we were given a nice teaser suggesting that one of the team isn't who they claim to be; I won't spoil who that was though!
