Domhnall Gleeson talks about his role as Levin, the young landowner who finds love with Kitty, in Anna Karenina
Clean-shaven, dressed in jeans and a light blue shirt, Domhnall Gleeson is almost unrecognisable as the actor who plays Konstantin Levin, a solemn young landowner with a coppery beard, in Anna Karenina. It's his biggest screen role to date, one that comes in the wake of accomplished turns in the Ira thriller Shadow Dancer and the new Judge Dredd film.
"They sent me the script for Anna Karenina and I thought, 'Oh, this is way out of my league in terms of the type of actor who would normally play this part'," he says. But he held his own during a five-hour audition in Los Angeles. Afterwards, when Wright called to say he had got the part, "I did a little dance on the street in Soho. It was wonderful."

He is best known for having a famous acting dad – Brendan – and admits he isn't classic leading-man material. But will his roles in the films Dredd and Anna Karenina change that?
On a fiercely sunny afternoon in London, Domhnall Gleeson lopes into the hotel courtyard in a blue hoodie and grey jeans, and sticks out a hand to shake mine. The cheerful 29-year-old pulls up a chair in the shade; he is pink and tall and skinny, with a shock of short orange hair in place of the lank locks worn in some of his most widely seen work. (He was Ron Weasley's scarred brother Bill in the final Harry Potter instalments, and a whimpering outlaw in the Coen brothers' True Grit.) He is well known for his well-known father, Brendan Gleeson, who makes such a feast of supporting parts that you wish he got more leads. The same can...

Last week, we took a look at the relative dearth of leading men in Hollywood: why Tom Cruise, Will Smith, et al. remain at the top of the tree and why so few serious competitors have emerged since. But one of the most exciting things about our job is getting to watch the new names that emerge, breakouts who have the potential to join the A-listers, or at the very least, deliver a host of hugely exciting performances for decades to come.
So we've decided to kick off our On The Rise selection for 2012 by looking at some of the actors who we're tipping for big things in the next few years. Last time we made these kinds of picks and predictions we did pretty well, listing the likes of Joel Edgerton, Edgar Ramirez, Jason Sudeikis, Adam Scott, Jake Johnson and David Oyelowo who have all gone on to become much-sought-after names,...

Peaches Geldof has been left unimpressed with a British TV drama based on her father's campaign to stage 1985 charity supergig Live Aid, branding it "exhausting" to watch. The story of how Bob Geldof and promoter Harvey Goldsmith put the massive event together, staged in London and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in just six months was dramatized for a BBC TV movie, "When Harvey Met Bob", starring Domhnall Gleeson as the singer and Ian Hart as the promoter. It debuted on Sunday, December 26 - and Peaches was watching.
