As a butterfly falls to its death, the world becomes alive with the dancing and moving shells of many insects before who have suffered the same fate.
In case it needs to be said (and I guess it doesn't), I'm not an animator and as such sometimes I have no idea how certain animated films are pulled together and, in many cases, even how the creators were able to envision the final product to be able to start making it. In some ways it is easier for me to understand the storyboarding of a "normal" film with characters etc than it is to understand how this spiralling vision of dead insects and images came together. This is the plot though – a butterfly falls to its death and the shape it makes is caught up in a mass of similar shapes all spinning and moving against black backgrounds or aerial images of urban areas. All played out under music.
I don't know if there is a deeper "meaning" to be had here but watching the short is quite beautiful and experience; the images are odd as they are based on dead insects, however their movement, shapes and coordination is really fascinating to watch. The music works surprisingly well, giving the whole thing an upbeat feel – like watching a dance, which I guess is what we are doing. It works very well as a whole and I enjoyed it very much even if I am not knowledgeable enough to be able to appreciate the technical skill that undoubtedly went into making this.
