The Best Episode in Anime
BadgerStorm434530 January 2022
This episode has the best twist in anime. The intensity of this scene was crazy and it was enhanced by stellar music and animation. Eren Yeager is the best fictional protagonist and he only gets better going forward. Grisha and Zeke are also incredible characters.

Emotion Packed episode
abdiluqman-4759331 January 2022
The emotions if Eren, zeke and Grisha in this episode is too tier, I really loved it. We see how a complex man Grisha was, Zeke gets to onow the truth with his father and gets closure. Who is the bad guy here, Eren or Zeke. The story keeps on shifting every episode and I am here for it.

My vote is 10

Plus the animation in this episode is some of the best i've seen!

Who made who?
Shmaden31 January 2022
I watched this episode yesterday and I was completely blown away by the twists in it. It took so many clues and small references across the show from Season 1 till season 3 and delivered what is possibly the biggest plot twist in this show up until now.

I won't go into describing what that is, because I want to let you guys enjoy it as I did. I was shocked, mind-blown and entertained throughout it's 24 minutes runtime. And the cliffhanger, my God, this show is headed for greatness and I'm not ready for that yet. Neither am I for this show to end.

Fantastic as always AoT! 10/10.

Warning: Spoilers
Do you people get it? Zeke told its father who brainwashed Eren, BUT ITS OPPOSITE!!! Now it seems Eren is walking a written path, where he knows how everything is played out. And he is doing it emotionless, with people and children dying around him, despite fact hes entire path is driven by revenge and childhood emotions... This show is so deep! Wow!

Eren Yeager, Puppeteer of His Own Fate
Qoenntrell30 January 2022
(I reviewed this early by way of the Attack Titan)

I'd first like to applaud the people responsible for the eerie silence when Eren starts talking to Grisha, never would I have thought that having no music would fit the atmosphere so well. I loved how the scarf scene was enhanced by Mikasa's utterance "It's warm" with a reverb effect and definitely the choice to reuse Wit's storyboards for the key scene with eye shots of Grisha and Zeke to connect back to episode 1 how he was looking at an estimation of Eren looking back at him this entire time. A most clever decision to maintain consistency and the foreshadowing genius of Isayama!

This episode was such a rollercoaster of emotions not just for us but for Eren himself, displaying various interesting faces in his journey through his father's memories.

In the paths before entering Grisha's memories, Eren displayed a bout of anger at Zeke's resignation of himself and his own bloodline for the sake of perishing for the greater good. But it wasn't a matter of comparing the bloodshed from either plan to which Eren calls messed up, but the ideology each brother abides by that are at odds with each other (as represented by Eren not catching the ball the previous episode). The rejection of one's people disgusts Eren, as someone who lives with the pride of being born and being free. His anger at Zeke and scorning him as a pathetic man who could only define himself by sacrificing his own dignity, that is the ultimate act of shame for him. Because "I don't want to just live (for the sake of it)(ED7).

But Eren is also capable of sorrow. After witnessing the bloodbath at his own hands at the cabin, Zeke thought nothing more and signalled Eren to move on, but the scene of him wrapping his scarf around Mikasa means a lot more to him. The scarf represents beauty in a cruel world for Mikasa, as well as the promise he made to his mother to protect her at all costs, a promise he had now discarded through Louise's words to Mikasa, representing a beautiful moment lost in the past. To MIkasa now, it is a symbol of her attachment to him, which Mikasa feels conflicted about at the moment. We don't get a chance to see this side of Eren very often, and it sucks that neither does Mikasa.

=I am me, I always have been=

I anticipated this moment since it came out years ago because it marks such a significant turning point for Eren's character because while he used the catchphrase "Because I was born into this world" rather loosely this was the first time we've heard Eren actually show some semblance of self awareness and acknowledgement of his nature. It's the moment of clarity we've all been waiting for as someone who understood that he was never brainwashed by anyone or even influenced by his environment to come to this point because the main driving force behind his unquenchable thirst for absolute freedom came from within ever since he was born. He had always felt this way, and this was something Zeke, someone who never wanted to become a warrior, who was content with living in the internment zone is safety, could never understand. It's a battle of nature and nurture within Eren and between Eren and Zeke, as brothers who foil each other.

=Bootstrap Paradoxes=

I'm certain that many are confused about how Grisha could "see" Zeke and to be clear it's very well established in the narrative how this happens without any plotholes. Grisha simply sees Zeke from Eren's POV as he peeks into the future memories of Eren by way of the founding titan's power (hence the title of the episode), thus also foreshadowing that Eren would have his way midway through the episode by gaining the power of the coordinate from Ymir to transfer it to him in the first place. Grisha is literally seeing himself from Eren's eyes as he "looks" at him, just imagine that for a moment.

Since dynamic determinism is basically confirmed by the existence of this causal loop through the path (and hence memories), all characters continue to preserve their own agency through compataiblism, which is the theory that supports the coexistence of both free will and determinism, so no worries there. It's just ingenius how this was all setup and foreshadowed from the very first episode, from the very first chapter, and the execution of "time travel" (though not really) just blows my mind everytime.

I was speechless then and I am speechless now, simply a 10/10 episode.

Well done Mappa
bardy931 January 2022
I was really worried about the animation quality and music for this crucial chapter as I was disappointed by these aspects of the last episode, but this one was executed perfectly. This episode starts off simple and just keeps building and building to a very chaotic and devastating final scene. Voice acting was on point and the animation held up much better than some of the strange animation choices in "two brothers". At this point, I've forgotten much of the plot of the manga, so it was nice to be shocked all over again by the twists in this (and they are really excellent) - it's a very well written episode, with a great story telling device functioning well at the centre of it, and some fantastic lines of dialogue - nothing too cringeworthy as this show sometimes falls into. Definitely my favourite episode of the second half, probably the best episode since "assault" imo.

Biggest plot twist ever
ThomasP90930 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Eren is the antagonist, protagonist and just a goated M. C. Grisha's voice actor had probably the best voice acting performance in all of AOT. The OST choices were spot on. 11/10.

That's where the downfall of the show starts
yoktr2 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Studio Mappa did a great job in this episode with the visuals and soundtracks, but the time travel aspect in the memories added at this point of the story makes no sense and is just added as a plot moving tool with no foundation and what's coming next is even more senseless.

So disappointed in Season 4 of Attack on Titan and this episode confirmed my fear (the story became too convoluted)
jeuv2 February 2022
Disclaimer: I wish I were wrong; but I'm pretty sure some will not even read what I have to say. Instead, they will jump on the hatewagon and downvote me to oblivion for simply stating my opinion. This is mean and vapid.

Anime-only here. I watched the last episode "Memories of the Future" and I never felt as conflicted about a show as of now. I understand what Hajime Isayama is trying to achieve but, for some reason, I found the execution lacking. To the point that I do not understand the high praises. For me, this episode is the epitome of what I do not like in Attack on Titan (AoT) since Season 4. I will explain why.

Do not get me wrong. I am a big fan of the show and Season 3 Part 2 is for me the peak. Tension and emotion reached great heights in the Return to Shiganshina arc. Think about Reiner hiding inside the wall; think about the epic fight against Zeke; think about Armin's sacrifice; think about the dilemma to choose between Ermin and Armin... I could go on and on about the incredible moments this arc offered us. This is for me peak fiction, definitely not Season 4.

I would surprise some of you, but I would not have been bothered if AoT ended with the ocean scene in Season 3. It would have been a perfect open ending for me. It was the end of the old AoT, the main goals of the characters have been mostly been completed with no more Titans. It just felt right.

Then Season 4 came and it was by far the most disconcerting experience I ever had. I did not recognise anymore any of the characters I used to love. I was saddened to see Mikasa and Armin having less screen time to the point they became tertiary characters. They introduced too many characters I did not care about such as Gabi or Yelena. Even worse, the motivations of the protagonists became so nebulous. All in all, I think the jump in the timeline did a disservice to my appreciation to the story. Adding to that, Isayama kept expanding the lore supplying us with a lot of information to digest (Mikasa has to protect Eren because she is an Ackerman, etc.).

Just to be clear, I do understand Isayama's motives (blurring the lines between right and wrong, changing our perspective to the story...). That is much to his credit, but it is not because his artistic choices are bold, that their execution cannot be criticised or disliked.

This leads me to why I believe "Memories of the Future" is the epitome of the failures of Season 4. To put it simply, the writing has became so contrived and full of retcons, it lost the appeal it had in the prior seasons. For me, AoT excelled in depicting an incredible sense of mystery, the tragedy of war and tactics & strategy in battles. This is what drew me to AoT.

For me, complex is not always synonymous of better. This episode proves this precept. For the most part, I don't believe in messing with time. It is easy to overcomplicate things when you incorporate time magic as a plot device. It is like changing the rules mid-game, almost cheating. Just to clarify, it is not about me not getting the point, but not liking the point. The story became so over-written for its own good with too many characters and plot points & twists that it derailed from its initial premise.

TLDR: So, to conclude, as a fan of AoT, I feel left behind, not because I don't understand the story. But because I feel the writing has became too convoluted and we lost what made AoT so great: human drama, war strategy and the characters that made the story. Am I the only one to be disappointed?

Maybe the best AOT episode of all time
JonyVeana31 January 2022
Im going to be Brief, this is my favorite attack on titan episode, the OST, the faces by the same guy who do the faces in death note, the voice actors especially Grisha one are amazing, and of course that plot twist almost at the end is the best twist in the show, I don't think anything can match this but who knows? 10/10 without a doubt this is the easist score i ever given on IMDB.

It felt like i am watching Dark
bsamad-5008831 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Every time there is a flashback episode on attack on titan you know that your mind is gonna be blown away , this one took us on a real amazing journey on grisha's memories, everything about this episode is pure masterpiece, the flashback of season 1 and seeing old characters and some sweet memories when eren was a child were so touching , the dialogues, the plot twist is just amazing and again i watched the episode twice , everything we thought happened is not exactly happened like we believed , i will try to explain what i understood from this crazy episode , zeke told eren that he has the ability the use the founding titan now and even after he found out that eren betrayed him he still thinks that's because of his father's brainwashing, so he took him to grisha's memories to show to him that his father was a bad person and that he brainwashed him, as a surprise and as they going through grisha's memories zeke finds out that his father was not as bad to eren as he was to him and that he learned his lesson ! That's where eren told him that he is not brainwashed, that's who he is since he was a kid ! Always pursuing freedom and by killing the bad guys that hurts mikasa he told him "since i was a kid , i killed everyone who tries to take my freedom away " not like you who couldn't even accept yourself , the surprise didn't stop here and we were taken to the most brilliant scene of the episode when grisha went to raiss family to take the founding titan ,zeke was like us the viewers waiting for grisha to kill raiss family but as surprise to us and zeke grisha did not wanna do it ! And this is where the amazing and shocking plot twist of the episode comes ! Eren was the one who told his father what he should do by reminding of all the cruel things that happened to him and this is where i felt like i am watching "Dark" in that show there was a familiar term called "the boostrap paradox" and to simplify the term , when there is a problem and you want to fix that problem you go back in time to fix it or stopping it from happening in the first place but it ends up that you the one who caused it in the first place which make you live a time loop forever , this is not what exactly happened to zeke but similar ! He took eren to see how bad grisha was and change his mind and as a surprise it looks like zeke is the one who started this whole thing by taking eren there ! See the paradox and the amazing plot twist !! Zeke made a huge mistake taking eren cause he believed he was gonna solve the problem but he was the one who caused it in the first place !! Eren's knew all that because he has the ability to see the future and now we know that eren from the start was the masterplan of all this 10/10.

What is going on?
s_iliya_p30 January 2022
We are at the Interstellar+ period of the show. So many questions are supposed to be answered in this episode, yet the writers have created so many more. The episode is surely finished at one of the most suspended cliff hangers of the show's history.

Whatever path the story had taken, once more, took a swift turn just about now and broke expectations. Even though this episode contains dialogues and flash backs mostly, the shocking element exists to a great extent. I am agitatedly waiting for the next episode... god!

Who started the story?
Adam-0926531 January 2022
This episode sets aside action and focuses more on explanations. Zeke and Eren run through their fathers memories and place pieces together on his reasons behind his intentions. How it all started, what it could possibly mean for the future. Who's intention was it to start with, influenced memories coming into light.

I liked the episode, not all greatness comes from epic action. I rated a 10 because i believe it's above a 9.5 but not a 9.9. We are gaining more hard truth about the story as the series goes but for me this episode sits at a strong 9.6, 9.7 or at most a 9.8.

9.8/10.

The enemy
Brolinit30 January 2022
Erwin (to Eren): "Who is the real enemy"

No one knows who the enemy is.

Marleys are convinced Eldians are the devils.

Eldians have to fight back.

Pieck points at the Yaegerists.

Zeke thinks it's Grisha, his father.

Eren sees the titans as the obvious threat to humanity.

The war continues.

This episode reveals the ultimate villain.

Very few series comes close to such levels of writing.

The Most Mind-Bending plot twist in TV history.
marveller-661 February 2022
There! I said it. The haters can go to hel. We could never have imagined this, ever. I mean...tbh, this even surpassed, Empire Strikes Back, Lost's twists, GOT's Winds of Winter & The Door, heck this even surpassed AOT's Senshi and That Day itself. I don't think I'll ever witness something as extraordinary as this MASTERPIECE. All I can say is that Isayama is a remarkable writer gifted with extraordinary story-telling gifts and talent. The Pure tension I experienced even after having read the manga is inexplicable. This episode had a psychological vibe to it like Death Note and I absolutely loved it. This is the most fascinating story ever told.

All other stories are trivial in comparison
joyconboyz14 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Eren Jaeger has the best writing for a villain ever, and it's not even close. And it's largely because it's really not as simple heroes and villains, it's just people doing whatever it takes to do what they think is right. I genuinely don't think it's possible to land a bigger plot twist than this one. After the previous episode they trick you into thinking that the Eren you wanted was back, but no, he had a plan so many steps ahead of everyone else that it was impossible to prevent, and the way it's slowly revealed throughout this episode was out of this world. There's no real action or near-death experiences and yet the next-level directing puts you on edge through the entire thing as you can feel that there's something else going on and when I realized what it was, I got a feeling that I have never had while watching anything. On top of all that, what truly elevates this to biggest plot revelation of all time is that in reality, nothing's changed... He's still the same Eren he's always been, we just didn't see it before.

Mind-blowing. Simply mind-blowing.
tea_in_a_cup1 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
While still not quite over the visual shock of seeing Eren's decapitated body toppling onto the ground, the viewers are once again led to another shock. But this time, it is a psychological one. Eren has completed his transformation: from a naive, impulsive young brat into a manipulative, calculating monster of the story. The twist in this episode is perhaps the biggest and most mind-blowing twist in the history of anime, and definitely among the best in the history of cinema. Isayama's brilliance is in how he has been hiding the answer right in front of our eyes by sprinkling hints here and there, yet we unsuspecting viewers never guessed the answer, only to be left in shock at the revelation.

The juxtaposition between Zeke and Eren in this episode is also beautifully laid out: both are born into this world - one curses his birth, the other blesses it. One was born special with the royal blood running in his veins, yet despises life. The other, born mediocre, yearns for specialness and lusts for life. "I was born into this world" drives the two brothers into two completely different paths in their quest for Eldians' salvation, with each brother believing that his is the only right path.

And hidden underneath the dark tone of this episode is the love that Grisha has for his sons and family. Attack on Titan, while making us our hearts sink at the sight of Eren transforming into a monster, is still able to put a smile on our face and warm our hearts at the reunion of two certain characters (only to make them sink back down at the last scene).

11/10. The scale is broken.

AOT reaches a higher level.
mohamedaa31 January 2022
Watching new episodes of AOT gives me a hype not all the shows and movies can do, AOT is at a high level where very few stories had reached.

The plot twist shouldn't be just about the surprise, It must make sense to the watchers, (Arya killing the night king is an example of how the plot twist can be so weak and stupid, The red wedding is an example of how the plot twist could be GREATLY written). This episode on another hand is a great plot twist to change the cards and to look differently at the characters.

This show shines with it's story more than anything else!
dmd_m30 January 2022
First of all a big thank you to Grisha's VA. What an immense work. Completely stole the show!

The revelations make complete sense and i think we can finally have our "three eyed raven". It is very rarely where a show ties all of it's mysteries so well and manages to surprise you even after you thought you've seen the best of it. I can't wait to see what's coming.

And ingenious writing that should definitely be taught in schools!
