While the Sundance Film Festival manages to catapult a handful of young, unknown actors to stardom each year, it's also a great platform for industry veterans looking to revitalize their careers.
The 2012 comeback queen could very well be Helen Hunt, who returns to the big screen in "The Surrogate" after several years of flying under the radar. The film received rave reviews thanks to John Hawkes' star turn as a man confined to an iron lung after contracting polio and Hunt's portrayal as his sex surrogate/therapist.
Aside from receiving some of the festival's biggest buzz, it also got the biggest payday. Reuters confirms that the drama was purchased by Fox Searchlight for $6 million dollars, the largest amount of the 2012 festival so far.
"The Surrogate" is based on the true story of poet and journalist Mark O'Brien, and also stars William H. Macy as a priest who counsels Hawkes' character.

New Line Cinema has confirmed that Malin Akerman has joined the cast of Rock of Ages, playing Constance Stack, a journalist who romances Tom Cruise’s Stacee Jaxx. But that’s not the only project the actress has on her plate. No, Rock of Ages brings Akerman to… six films headed to theaters in 2012: The Giant Mechanical Man, Medallion, Wildwood Inn, Serpent Girl, The Numbers Station, and, now Ages. As for 2011, Akerman appears in happythankyoumoreplease, Electra Luxx, The Bang Bang Club, Criminal Empire for Dummy’s, Wanderlust, and Inferno, the Linda Lovelace biopic that unceremoniously dumped Lindsay Lohan for...

Malin Akerman may not have secured the role of Lois Lane in Zack Snyder.s Superman, but the actress has absolutely nothing to be worried about considering she.s already got a slew of upcoming projects on her hands. While talking about her latest film, The Bang Bang Club, at the Tribeca Film Festival, Akerman took the time to run through her laundry list of new projects including Medallion, Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story and maybe one day Serpent Girl. Medallion is the one she.s working on right now, a bank heist action film with Nicolas Cage. Of course Cage had a little run-in with the New Orleans Police recently, but Akerman assures us that everything on set is business as usual. .There was a little moment of altercation there, but everything.s worked out,. she explained. .Production is still moving forward.. As for Lovelace, Akerman called that .the...

Subject: Helen Hunt, 47-year old American actress
Date of Assessment: April 6, 2011
Positive Buzzwords: Longevity, television, girl next door
Negative Buzzwords: Oscar, limited range, feature films
The Case: This week, we're dealing with yet another damn Academy Award winner and perhaps one of the greatest indicators that awards don't matter beyond a short-term improvement of the salary. In 1998, Helen Hunt won the Best Actress Oscar for her role in As Good As It Gets; she subsequently enjoyed a short run in a few high-powered blockbusters but then suddenly dropped off the Hollywood radar. Yet since the tender age of 10 years, Hunt's been working as an actress, although she didn't rise into mainstream popular culture until 1992's debut of "Mad About You." After seven seasons, a few Emmy awards, and a couple of blockbuster movies (including the aforementioned Oscar-winning role), Hunt pulled a Hollywood disappearing act for the most part. Indeed, the 1990s were hers,...

Serpent Girl – Kate Bosworth, Malin Akerman and Helen Hunt star in Matthew Carnahan's adaptation of his own novel about a young carnival worker who hits the road with a flipper-armed "serpent girl" in order to track down a band of thieving circus freaks. What's This S%^@ Called Love? – Fresh from Jesse Peretz' Sundance glow surrounding My Idiot Brother, the filmmaker has already begun work on his next project -- an '80s set family drama starring John Malkovich and Catherine Keener as parents of a gay teen who prefers to keep his coming out a low key event.
Don Peyote – Dan Fogler writes, directs and stars in Studio 13's film about "one man's apocalyptic dream and subsequent synchronicity-filled search for answers as he goes down the rabbit hole of 2012 mythology."
Spaceless – Louis Leterrier directs this sci-fi flick written by I, Robot's Jeff Vintar about a guy trapped in a race against time to save his life and figure out who left him out to die alone in outer space. Gore Verbinski produces with Blind Wink Productions.
The Stand – A double dose of development projects for scaremeister Stephen King. On the eve of Paramount announcing its plans to remake his Pet Sematary, the author found out that his post-apocalyptic tome The Stand was picked up by Warner Bros. by reading about it on the Internet.
