Broken Promises
gamskee4 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I was told by the creators of the film that they had packed as much sex, gore, and disgusting depravity into a film that they could- in other words, a truly overloaded slasher flick of the most base and disgusting level, something I could get behind.

When the lights went down and the film came on, whisper quiet audio and mumbled poorly delivered lines were drown out by the raucous laughter of those who had (obviously) created the film. After a long and awkward atypical guy tries to get some action car scene, he gets out of the car only to be... thrown in a trunk? After being thrown into said trunk, his girl is murdered in perfect darkness, an effective device if the audio and acting support it- which they totally didn't. The flat and ineffectual screams and whining from cast kept any of it from really having effect. The guy gets out of the trunk and is run down by rubber mask Sloth from the Goonies, has his guts torn out, and we go to the best scene of the movie.

Sloth, AKA the Goat Man, takes a saw to some limbs in some dark building as rock music plays and a swinging light causes his shadow to loom on the wall. It looks cool. If the whole film looked this way, it would've been a slick and stylish low budget piece.

The film quickly goes nowhere as we get some cars filled with more mumbling, not funny, young people who we'll eventually see get murdered. Still can't hear the jokes as they are laughed over by the crew.

The plot meandered along, still barely audible, acting no better, and we hear about the goat man and see some guts outside a park ground bathroom just sort of hanging out. We half hear the legend of the goat man, and for some reason, there is a guy eating poop in the bathroom- gross, but sort of random. There was a car breakdown and then...

I don't know, I got up and left the theatre. As a low budget film, there is a lot that can be forgiven, but you can't forgive everything. Poor writing, directing, acting, audio, and film quality makes for an all points bulletin of unwatchable. If the jokes had been funny, pass, if the gore over the top, pass, if the sex crammed in, pass, but it had none of these elements.

On the plus side, I give credit for attempt at a full length feature. However, when I see the starting sequence of the sawing madman, I can only think that if they pulled off that much visual menace in the beginning, it shows they could have done more with the rest of the film.

Over all, if you promise depravity, sex, and gore packed to the gills, you better deliver within the first half hour of the film.

The worst film ever made
I honestly have no words to describe how unbelievably terrible and wasteful the last 75 minutes of my life have been watching this. I got it for £5 and thought it would be a funny film to watch and didn't have high expectations going into to it, If you see it for cheap and think 'it will be worth a laugh' you're wrong just save yourself the money and go buy a packet of cigarettes it will be better for your health. Not to mention the ridiculous sound and deaths in the film just the entire atmosphere within the film itself was on par with with what you leave in the toilet after your first cup of coffee in the morning. I believe on the box it states 'Gore fans will love this' you won't, you will hate it with every fibre of your being and wish you spent the last hour and 15 minutes of your life eating glass, it truly is terrible, 1/10 is generous. Do not buy !

Terrible Film do not waste your life.
in_my_tree3325 March 2013
I never write reviews but seeing as people connected to the film and the god awful company that made it 101 seem to be writing reviews saying its a classic i thought i better. I am a massive lover of horror films from Bad Taste to Nightmare on Elm street Halloween to The Burning. I don't care if the acting isn't world class in a horror don't mind to much if the story is rubbish its all about the atmosphere the scares the bad guy etc etc. This film is tragic the guy trying to cop a feel and the way that whole scene plays out is retarded its like a PG movie 'oooh i wanna touch your tits' 'no don't touch me' on and on bla bla bla. filmed in the style and with the budget of a porn i put the DVD straight in the bin after i watched it (no joke) If you wanna watch a good low budget horror there is loads. Bad Taste Halloween etc etc these films prove you don't need a big budget to make a film work.

In conclusion there is no reason in the world to watch this film if it was a matter of life and death id happily get my coat and say my goodbyes.

Hope this saves you some trouble Laterzzzzz

one of the worst films ever
rjsmith31119 May 2013
i wouldn't even rate this movie 1/10 its that bad, unfortunately i have to rate it 1/10 on here but seriously its an easy 0/10 from me, only movies that are as bad as this are, Hellinger, Legend Of Harrow Woods, Dead Matter & Nazi Zombies.

i am a serious horror fan and movie reviewer however i really cant be bothered to write a serious review for this as it was offensive nonsense.

if you bother to really watch it then good luck.

but don't say i didn't warn you.

The box is a lie
brooklynquaint1 March 2014
I purchased this film for my best friend for Christmas on play for 6.99, as we love cheesy scary movies. However, this film is a lie. Everything about it is terrible. The box has an actual goatman on it, whereas in the film, the villain looks like the beast man from The Goonies. Not to mention the title of the film isn't actually The Goatman Murders, but in fact Deadly Detour. We were conned.

The sex scenes are terrible, the actors are woeful - the only one believable as an actor is the fat guy. Mike O'Mahony has an awful lot to answer for, he has ruined film in less than 90 minutes, Hitchcock must be rolling in his grave.

Falsely advertised piece of dirt. Avoid at all costs or you will lose all faith in film making as a whole.

The person who allowed this to go on sale to the general public has some serious explaining to do
DrZazlos8 July 2013
This movie is nothing more than a "Home Made" movie produced with a generic camera and very amateur effects. This film is an insult to the Horror genre. I made the mistake of walking into my local ASDA (Wal Mart for you Americans) and looking at the cover thinking it could have potential. Big mistake. I feel violated. Please people, DO NOT view this movie, you have better things to do. This piece of trash lacks any story, acting and meaning. I have had more enjoyable experiences like jumping into a bunch of nettles with no clothes on than the experience of watching this rubbish. One thing is for sure, the local dump it site will be having a great time incinerating this rubbish.

Awful Avoid (contains spoilers)
xkazx898 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
1/10 Bought this from my local Cash Generator for 50p and never turn down a bargain. Within the 1st few seconds I could tell that this movie wasn't going to be great due to the poor acting. The blood and guts you see from the 1st on screen (pre credits) death is clearly just some sort of material. I mean why couldn't animal guts be used to make it look a bit more realistic? The sound man on this film did a really poor job its hard to hear any of the actors furthest away from the microphone. Why was there a disabled person in the mens toilet when there was clearly a toilet marked for disabled people? Normal toilets never have their own disabled toilet when there's a separate one! Now mash potato looking sick? No sick I've ever seen looks like that. All of these problems are less than 20 minutes in. There's footage of a highway and then suddenly there on a road through the woods? What was the point of the random stock footage of the highway exactly? I'm confused as to the age these people are meant to be as they look in there late 20s to early 30s but I'm guessing they are meant to be teens. I also don't get why in films people happily have sex with their friends about but would anyone actually do that? I highly doubt it. When the ginger guy is peeing why is there a close up of it? I mean it's an awful fake everything! Why does no one hear anyone screaming they haven't gone that far and would still hear it! The fat guy was running away from his girlfriend yet end up running back towards her without turning round? How that works I have no idea! The girl with the red streak in her hair has to be the worst actor as her screaming is awful and just her acting in general is bad. Also how would a car shred the geeky guy to bits? Its not that powerful! The deaths of the blind people on the bus are just stupid. These people are blind not dumb I'm sure they would recognise something bad was happening and try to run not just sit there Wouldn't recommend this film to anyone its full of flaws and is just awful.

Utter garbage
lsg-590374 April 2017
I have to admit I've seen some car crashes of movies in my time; this is one hell of a motorway pileup... There is absolutely nothing redeeming about this movie at all. If you insist on watching it still, then just for the gore - there's plenty of it - and don't get me wrong, I'm a gore fan, but it is just so poorly executed. Think of this more as a guide of how not to make a film.

Take This Detour
Bonanza08752 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I read a critic's review about Deadly Detour where the reviewer referred to it as "Slasher Porn at it's finest" and after seeing the movie I have to say that I couldn't agree with that statement more. If you get off on slasher flicks then you should blow your load watching this. It has blood, gore, violence, sex... the works. Is it a good movie? I won't lie to you, it's not. It has problems with sound, a couple of continuity issues, and some scenes that didn't make sense at all. What Deadly Detour is, though, is an excellent first attempt at film-making by Mike O'Mahony, a talented writer and director who shows that he may very well be going places. While some aspects of the film didn't work, other aspects worked very well. There were some shots that looked studio quality, the humor was spot on (the 'Want Some?' scene is classic), and the over the top in your face violence was exactly what you'd expect. Actually, there's a bus scene at the end of the movie that is way MORE than you'd expect, but to me it makes the whole thing worthwhile. And while the acting was far from Oscar worthy, keep in mind that these are not experienced actors and the film was shot on a shoestring. One standout is James Costa as Zach, who seemed to be channeling John Belushi. Erich Ficke also did an excellent job as The Goatman. I'm not really sure WHY he was called the Goatman when he didn't really look like a goat at all but more like a deformed psychopath, but I believe that it ties into an old urban legend in Maryland which is where the film supposedly takes place. While I wish the mask had more expression, Ficke commanded the character with an imposing presence. He's a big guy, and I can see him taking up the mantle of Jason Voorhees one day. Thumbs ups also go to Stacey Hartman as Jenna for being super hot and Julie Ann Hamolko for being hot in a Zooey Deschanel sort of way. Hamolko shows she's got some acting chops as well and I look forward to seeing her again. And lastly, Fred Ficke, Erich Ficke's real life father, steals the show with his cameo as the doomed bus driver of that final scene. All in all, Deadly Detour is a great first try, it could very well become an underground classic, and I look forward to future films from Maniac Films.

OPEN THE TRUNK. THIS ISN'T FUNNY, HEATHER.
nogodnomasters8 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
First off, the film is bad, but does have entertainment value. It opens with a couple parking. A guy in a Hawaiian shirt with an Elvis air freshener is attempting to get a girl drunk so he can score a kiss. He has his interior lights on and wipers going. There is an insect on the camera lens that is distracting. No money for retakes.

Goat man likes to disembowel his victims and leave visible entrails. The initial killing takes place in Pennsylvania and apparently they were able to get a good deal on pig intestines before they went off to the scrapple factory. 9 kids are on their way south to Florida for vacation. They travel in two cars that are designed to have the maximum internal conflict. They are traveling on a back road when we see a sign for Maryland on their way south to Florida. The next thing know they are near West Chester, Pennsylvania traveling on I-95 stopping at an Interstate rest stop. Then without getting off 95 they are suddenly on a back road, apparently the detour in the title, as one vehicle breaks down and we can guess the rest except for that one thing at the end which was Troma gory, funny, WTF scene involving ...well a bus filled with... Now that made the film.

This is a film for lovers of bad indie slashers with bad acting, unlikable characters, an omnipresent killer, and over the top effects.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex, nudity (male and female) gore, blood squirts.

The old school horror
filmperson523 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
After months of me anticipating the release of Deadly Detour, I found myself excited to see it for the first time. As I sat there in the theater I was amazed of how good the camera work and the FX work was for a low budget independent feature horror film.

The story of the film was also good and solid. The film is about a group of kids that are on a road trip to Florida. They stop at a rest area, but little do they know that this killer called "The Goat Man" is in the woods around the rest area that they are at.

This is your typical gore horror film with laughs in it. I couldn't help but laugh about half of the things that were going on in the film. But that is what filmmaker Mike O'Mahony was going after. By the end of the film I wasn't sure if I could take it seriously or not. But regardless whether or not I could take it seriously it is was a good film to sit down and watch.

The only two things I saw that could be fixed was the sound of the film and some of the acting. But once again I talked to Mike about that. He told me that that was what is was going for that cheesy old school horror look and sound.

I would recommend this film to anyone who is into that cheesy old school horror that has lots of nudity, sex, gore, and killings.

Don't go into the woods today!
celticogam28 February 2013
I have read other reviews for this Title and i shall now totally ignore them!

Given the obvious small budget this movie has a nice feel and some genuine scares! The direction is solid, and the cast (Though unknown) Does a bang up job. The effects team shows a lot of promise, and I would like to view future releases from this crew!

Overall! A very enjoyable movie with plenty to please the gore hounds among you. So give this a go, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

It's great to see the smaller, Independent Film makers out there getting a bigger forum for their work!

An amazing classic. IGNORE OTHER REVIEWS
mark_235617 April 2016
I do believe the only reason this title is actually rates so low is because of the bad promotion to the release straight to DVD. The scenes that were sexual were compassionate and touching and the murder felt real and gruesome. I was pinned to my seat the whole time. The goatman was terrifying and the make up was so life like. I saw the cost of the production was around $200 which means the actors didn't get paid. But they deserve so much credit for releasing this title without payment. I wouldn't be surprised to see a select few on stage or starting with other top stars soon. I advise you to ignore all other reviews and watch this gripping, dramatic, dark and scary film. You will NOT be disappointed. 10/10!!!!!

P.s if you watched this off the back of my review and you came back. YOUV'VE BEEN CURSED!!!!!!!!!

Obviously low budget - Dont care
jagiddins27 January 2018
It was clearly obvious that the budget for this movie was low, but I actually did not care, there were scenes in this movie which were absolutely brutal, especially at the end.

Cheap, short, very gory and a lot of fun
Stevieboy66625 March 2024
UK title - The Goatman Murders. The British DVD cover is quite misleading as it shows a half human/half goat creature but in fact the Goatman is one ugly looking dude, a bit like a smaller unmasked Jason Vorhees. Mind you he's better looking than one of the kids, a stoner who looks like Ed Sheeran! The opening scene is very gory but then we get 30 minutes of 20 somethings' car breaking down in the backwoods, so they pass the time by drinking beer, smoking weed and having sex, which is all quite entertaining. Then Goatman appears and the rest is a gorefest! This is obviously a very low budget movie, the picture and sound quality is not great and the acting is very amateur (though I have seen far worse). The gore is quite extreme, given the budget the special effects aren't bad at all. No horrible CGI either. There is plenty of bad taste, one scene has a mentally handicapped man eating excrement (surely fake!?) at a service station, there are gay jokes galore and Goaty boards a school bus and slaughters all of the blind passengers. When I first watched this it had me in stitches of laughter, the second viewing didn't have quite the same effect but even so, with a few beers, I still found this to be a silly, bloody and enjoyable fun slasher flick. DVD runtime - 68m.
