Boring if your not high
soldier94289 March 2014
Before the movie started the audience are told to smoke some weed because you supposedly can't watch the film without being high. Well let's just say I don't have the best access to it so I watched sober. The movie is probably right. I thought the movie was quite boring and the relief being that it was very short and had Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa in it. The movie is sort of like watching weed porn in a lot of ways. Since half of the movie is showing Wiz and Snoop or their friends getting high in all the different ways. The plot does not have a lot of substance to it and ultimately this movie probably is only for when your high. If your not high, you probably shouldn't watch it. There are some moments that are pretty funny though even if your not high which broke some of the disinterest. I didn't think this movie was terrible, but it wasn't good either for me personally.

A Huge Cloud of Fart Flavored Pot Smoke
fender9184 July 2012
I am a fan of both Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa. So when I heard that they were collaborating to make a stoner comedy I was excited. But unfortunately (in my opinion) this is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Here's some reasons why I think this.

The first problem is at the beginning of the movie, when we're introduced to "Slow Burn". A poorly animated cartoon joint that, really, looks like a white banana. Slow Burn delivers some of the dumbest and unfunny dialogue I've ever heard. Slow Burn then proceeds to tell us that we have to get high to enjoy this movie. Now, it's no lie that weed makes some terrible movies more enjoyable. But relying on the intoxication of your audience for a films enjoyment is pathetic.

The next issue came when I began to uncover what the overall plot was. A cool kid helps a nerdy kid become cool. This story has been reused 1000 times over. When put into the right hands, this plot could possibly become effective, but usually this is not the case.

Now I could be wrong about this, but, while watching, it seemed that the overall point of the movie was to sell music. When you make a movie specifically to sell something or some things ("Jack and Jill") it will usually not turn out well. Especially when it's obvious.

I could go in depth about how bad the acting was or how flat the jokes fell, but I'm not trying to write a book. Which is sad because this is a movie that I've been anticipating as a fan of Wiz and Snoop, and a fan of stoner comedies. But good stoner comedies have good characters that you like and care for. I could care less if Mac & Devin don't graduate (or for that matter DIE).

Was actually loving it at first but started to go downhill quite rapidly after that.
Boba_Fett113826 June 2012
Well, here is the one guy that actually liked watching "Soul Plane", so I also was quite into the humor of this movie at first. However about halfway through this movie started to go downhill very fast.

As the start of the movie literally tells you; in order to enjoy and appreciate this movie you really first need to smoke some weed. Now I am not saying you should take drugs before watching this movie but it should tell you something about the movie its style and type of humor. If this doesn't sound fun or appealing at all to you, then simply stay away from this movie and never even come close to it.

The comedy of the movie is quite random at times and very often has nothing to do with the movie and its main story at all. I seriously don't mind this, since most of it really cracked me up. It however starts to become tiresome after a while, especially when it becomes apparent that the movie isn't going anywhere anymore with its story and is completely starting to loose focus after some time.

There comes a point, about halfway through the movie, that it becomes too much of a drugs movie. Seriously, every characters starts doing drugs (well, only marijuana) and only good things come from it, all the time. Not that this movie is necessarily a pro-drugs movie though, it's just far too silly for that of course but in parts it's actually still advocating for legalizing and using marijuana but this movie is of course not the best way to do so and isn't exactly setting the right example for any youngsters out there, though Snoop himself will probably disagree with me on this.

The way I see it; every now and then Snoop Dogg decides to have some fun and call a couple of friends to make a movie with. Nothing too fancy or expensive, just a simple movie to make, to pass some time with and to have a great and fun time while shooting. This for most part can be seen back on the screen, which is a positive thing to say, since it makes the movie a really fun one to watch at parts but the quality and money put into is all far too little to truly consider this a good enough movie, or even to take it serious enough as one.

Snoop Dogg is actually also the reason why I sometimes watch these kind of movies. I really like him as a person and actor and his personality and comedic style always makes me laugh and smile. He also definitely is being the highlight of this movie. Without him I would had most likely absolutely hated watching it.

Not a good movie by any means but I at least still got some laughs out of it. Thanks Snoop!

re hash(no pun) of a re make of a re cycled etc
cksd-205-85732820 June 2012
Cheech & Chong for the 2012 generation, tries to capture the Kid'N Play feeling from the 80's but fails, just a film to advertise the use of "smoke" as a way of life. Snoop has no acting abilities and it shows, the whole cast seems to be a sycophantic group hell bent on pleasing their leader. Film clearly a platform to "sell" the soundtrack, which like the film has predictable lyrics and strives to be "contraversal" in it's message, but is about 50 years to late (Hendrix, Joplin, Jim Morrison etc etc etc) told us to tune in and drop out far more eloquently.Sadly this is purely a commercial venture, those that will watch it and will promote It, will do so just because they think that they are "stickin it to DA man"

One of the worst films I've seen in recent memory.
A_Concerned_Critic23 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Note: Not that it genuinely matters, but the follow contains spoilers for the entire film.

Mac & Devin go to High School is a truly remarkable human achievement. Never before have I seen a collective group of human beings manage to take nearly half a million dollars and somehow transform that into some of the worst 75 minutes in cinematic history, looking cheaper and more amateur than many budgetless shorts I've seen on youtube. You'd also think that a film made by musicians wouldn't contain at least 7 royalty-free midi sound files populating the supposed "soundtrack", but it simply serves as testament to how absolutely little anybody working on this project gave a f***.

Starring in the film are rappers Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa, Snoop Dogg playing himself, but essentially as a creepy 35 year old man still in high school, and Wiz Khalifa playing as a "stuck-up" nerd, suspiciously wearing a long sleeved, button down shirt for most of the film to hide his tattoos. Andy Milonakis also makes a cameo appearance as a wheelchair bound, fart sucking cripple, proving that it is actually physically possible for a human being to sink lower than rock bottom.

The viewer is immediately greeted by a talking, time-traveling CGI joint from 1996, possibly once a banana on a stock model website, recolored white and given eyes and a mouth. He informs the viewer that it is near mandatory to watch this film while under the influence of marijuana, suggesting a parallel between seeing it uninebriated and watching a 3D film without the glasses. This should be the first warning sign to any rational human being to proceed no further, the fact that the writers are literally admitting that you have to be mentally stunted to appreciate the film's attempts at humor.

I understand that this is a "stoner" film, as begrudgingly I am to acknowledge that as a genre, but even a film like Half Baked doesn't required one to forcibly drop their IQ to appreciate at least a portion of the film's humor.

"So what?" you might, suggest. "It is just a crappy stoner comedy. It isn't trying to act like anything more." and I would completely agree with this sentiment if the film wasn't such a bitter, morally reprehensible affair.

A supportive girlfriend who dares suggest that she wishes for her Valedictorian boyfriend, the film's main character played by Khalifa, to attend Yale after finishing school is mocked as a "controlling b****". Snoop Dogg, on his 15th year of high school, manipulates the main character into consuming a cannabis brownie, transforms him into a lowlife hood, and decks him out in full body and face tattoos, (say goodbye to Ivy League or an actual job for that matter)and we are supposed to like and support both of these characters. Late in the film, Khalifa's girlfriend is shocked and dismayed at her Valedictorian boyfriend's new appearance and lifestyle (man, what a controlling b****) and in retaliation, our courageous protagonist cheats on her by having sex with a hooker.

After both get arrested, I suddenly start to think "maybe the makers of this film aren't complete sociopaths at all. Maybe we'll see our protagonist realize his fall from grace and try to redeem himself." Nope. They both get out of jail and neither face any consequences for their actions. Khalifa graduates valedictorian, rapping a song instead of giving a speech, his girlfriend falls for him once again, and Snoop Dogg cheats on a math test, finally graduating from high school and banging a substitute teacher who for some reason spends the whole movie in revealing dresses= and heavy makeup.

The film then returns to our CGI banana joint friend, who so eloquently enthralls the viewer with the film's thesis. "A lot of totally smart people smoke weed and it gives them inspiration and stuff. So it totally shouldn't be illegal, man," If this film is supposed to be exemplary of the intelligence level of the average marijuana user, I can only hope it stays illegal for a very, very long time.

Disappointment
phily1825 July 2012
I normally don't write reviews, but I felt compelled to write one after being highly disappointed with the outcome of this movie. Being originally from Pittsburgh, I was exposed to Wiz Khalifa when he was just an underground mix tape artist. The moment I heard him and Snoop were doing a movie, I was dying to see what type of film they would put together. I knew it wasn't going to be a Oscar nominee, but I was excited to see it for what it was, a stoner movie. I anticipated it to be a movie like How High mixed with a little bit of Superbad. The movie starts out with a cartoon clip of this character slow burn who at first seems like a good addition to the movie. He tells you to smoke some weed before the movie because, well lets face it, you cannot watch this movie sober (it's that bad). At various points, slow burn stops the movie to say some irrelevant things that seems like they are just there to fill up some space. It really bothered me, it is like when you are trying to watch a movie and someone keeps trying to talk to you, it really messed with the flow of the story (if you can even call it a story). Also, the movie was stopped multiple times for Mac and Devin to preform full length songs, which also seems like it was there to just fill up space. It would have been less irritating if the videos were placed at the end of the movie or added into the special features. The movie didn't have a smooth flow or an actual plot line. The story was a recycled script that was generic and vanilla. I know it's a movie, but it still has to be some what realistic. I couldn't take Snoop seriously as a 15 year senior, it just wasn't logical. I laughed a few times, but only because of the stony persona they both have and because I'm a long time fan of both the artists (also i was a little spacey). The movie was pushed back multiple times and it seems like they knew it was going to be bad, but they just hyped it up so that people would buy it. I wouldn't consider it a movie. Maybe if they posted it on YouTube or made it for TV then I would not have been as upset with it. Thank God I torrented it and didn't pay actual money for it. At the end of it, I was scratching my head thinking....how in the world did this movie get made? This is coming from a fan, I wanted to like the movie, but I just could NOT enjoy it….that's saying something. It seemed short and the ending didn't feel like a real ending. I don't care if it was low budget, that is no excuse. Wiz and Snoop should stick to what they know best, making music and smoking weed. Films are definitely not their thing. The soundtrack is great though!

Please Don't Watch This Movie
Zetsumei239 October 2014
Let me begin by stating that, despite the suggestions of the poorly animated talking blunt in the beginning of the movie (no, seriously), I was not high when I watched Mac and Devin Go to High School. Unfortunately, you would have to be stoned out of your mind to find anything in this movie even remotely funny, and so I sat through the most grueling and painful movie experience I've ever had the extreme displeasure to be subjected to.

In plain terms, there is a very real possibility that this is the single worst movie ever made.

But hey- I haven't seen every movie ever. There is a (small) chance someone managed to make something worse. I just doubt it. Every aspect is just so... stupid. The jokes would be funnier if you tried to make stupid jokes. The music is a sad attempt at a washed-up, has-been rapper to remain relevant.

But by far the worst thing is the plot. Presumably, Snoop and Wiz payed a small fortune to a group of preteen boys who just discovered weed, curse words, and girls (in the same ten-minute span) to write the first draft, forced at gunpoint a single homeless man strung out on crack to edit it, and then gave it back to the preteens for the final script.

Yes, this movie was low budget. But why? Could Snoop Dog, easily one of the most successful rappers of all time, not get a real producer? Hire someone with a tiny sliver of talent to do the effects? Hire an actor who could actually act? No. Because no self-respecting person would have anything to do with this movie. In an industry that would buy almost any script, no one would invest a nickel in this movie. It would be so much easier to just tie their career to a post and shoot it.

If you like extremely stupid pot jokes, incredible headaches, vast stretches of mind-numbing boredom, and watching a 40-year-old man pretending to be a high school-er, knock yourself out. Also, please get out of the gene pool before you manage to make humanity even worse.

But if you have even a tiny shred of self respect and/or an IQ over 7, please, just walk away. If you really, really just want to watch a terrible movie, go watch The Room. At least The Room is so awful it's funny.

Good Stoner Flick
michaeltrivedi23 September 2019
Mac & Devin Go to High School is a pretty decent movie for the marijuana enthusiasts out there. Of course, any stoner movie with Snoop with a guaranteed good time. It was also cool seeing Wiz Khalifa as the nerd coming out of his shell. The movie was not made exceptionally well, and could even be deemed amateurish. But it was definitely fun to watch. I was high-ly recommend it!

Don't bother, even if you're high!
prettybluefairy20 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Not that anyone expects this movie to be another Citizen Kane, but this was honestly one of the dumbest movies that I have ever had the displeasure to see. It was not funny at all, the actors and actresses involved all acted as if they had no experience in front of a camera or like they were acting in a school play, even the ones who usually are able to give a good performance in other projects. I spent the entire movie being embarrassed for the actors involved in this who actually do have acting talent. (I'M DISAPPOINTED IN YOU, MIKE EPPS!!) The storyline was weak and has been done to death already. They say, "You have to be high to enjoy this movie" but I was high as the stars in the sky and it was STILL one of the dumbest movies I've ever seen!! Snoop and Wiz's talents are much more suited to their musical careers, and I think they should both just stick to music. As for Andy Milanakis (or however you spell it), do us all a favor and accept that you are not black, you're not a rapper, you're not a thug are not hard core by any stretch of the imagination. You are a pasty white, chubby, unfunny wannabe and I think you should just give it up already. Please stop taking roles like this. All in all, I gave this movie 2 stars, but really it only deserves 1. I rated it two stars only because it contains nudity and a couple good songs. Unless you enjoy actually feeling your IQ dropping as you sit there, then skip this one.

You either like these kinds of movies or you don't
danleppert7816 March 2014
I think a lot of the other reviewers missed the point of this movie... the mediocrity is what makes this movie good. The jokes are dumb and the movie plays bad stereotypes and that's why it's funny! This movie isn't about character development or conflict... its ridiculous and just for fun. The fact that we have "slow burnin" the animated joint chiming in at random points in the movie just adds to the ridiculousness. Honestly if you look at the cover and saw that you were going to watch a movie where 40 year old snoop dogg is playing a high schooler of the same age who just hasn't graduated yet, you should expect what you're about to watch.

This is the kind of movie you watch when you want to just relax and watch some low class comedy. Invite some people over, talk through the movie, drink or whatever, and just enjoy something stupid for a while.

An Accurate Review
d33566211 July 2012
Being a fan of the Mac and Devin Album I found the movie to be entertaining. Whilst I found many of the reviews on this site to be rather misinformed or misleading. First off Wiz's acting wasn't up to par because let's face it he's a rapper not an actor, contrary to popular belief not all entertainers can make that transition into a different medium. Considering the circumstances, his first time on screen, I think Wiz did great and if that were something he would want to continue to do it would take work and time. While some of the reviewers found Snoop's acting a little dry I would have to disagree. But with awards and even more nominations Snoop has already proved himself to be a successful actor. Check the facts, it's not up for debate.

I can't stand the comparisons to "How High" or as one reviewer even went as far as"Superbad". As far as low budget films go it was pretty good. The "movie" was an hour long, more like a TV special if you ask me, so any comparisons to a higher budgeted feature film just seems unfair. If you didn't enjoy the film because of their promotion of weed culture Im sorry to say its Wiz and Snoop. What did you expect? I found some of the jokes to be corny, predicable, or unfunny while I found myself dying from laughter at times. I could have honestly done without Andy Milonakis character.

To those of you that didn't enjoy the musical breaks in-between scenes, I regret to inform you that the movie was adapted from the concept of a collab album, not the other way around. You would really have to be a fan of the music and the album to truly enjoy the film. The film wasn't meant to sell an album that was released almost a year ago, nor was it meant to be an extended music video to songs they already have videos for. It was made to go that extra mile and give a little extra to the fans and they succeeded in that delivery.

Sigh.
parodymaker1 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is terrible and caters to 13 year old pot-heads.Anyways, here's some reasons why i think it's awful: It's terribly unrealistic. Yes, most comedy movies are but this is unbearable. With most comedies, there is a slight possibility that the things in depicted in the film are possible. First off, 15 years in high school? Yeah, okay..Why couldn't you drop out? Someone blowing smoke in the form of a gun that shoots smoke across the room is stupid. Someone inhaling smoke through their a** and exhaling it as a brown smoke is stupid, not only that but it's the stupidest fart joke in history. Then the final scene where instead of a valedictorian giving a speech, he raps the most stupidest song which gives teens a reason to drink, smoke and have sex.Valediction status, amiright? Second on the list of crap: The effects. I am not a man of special effects but this was ridiculous. The smoking effects looked like someone made them on some off-the-shelf CGI program. Could they not afford movie pot? Was the budget spent on real pot and smoked in between takes? The tattoo scene with Devin getting tattoos is not only unneeded, but it looks like a photo of a hand and tattoo gun someone moved around various parts of Khalifa's body and then the tattoo appears. Third: there were so many unnecessary parts. For example, a joint narrating the story. Then at the end, gives a speech "informing" why pot is good for you. The scene with Devin getting tattoo's was god-awful and not important. The scene where Mac's two "b*****s" bail him out then they start making out was unneeded as well. This movie was made to sell a soundtrack. It caters to potheads and annoying horny guys.

GOING FOR THE GREEN
nogodnomasters15 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens up with a talking joint informing you that the only way to watch this film is to be stoned. It is designed to be cheesy and campy with names like "N. Hale High School" and "Ralph Skinnfloot". It has an immaturity appeal to it. The plot is immaterial and the film would have been better as a "Groovetube" type film than trying to follow a plot about an old pot dealer in HIGH school.

The humor was re-hashed jokes and dialogue that would indeed sound better stoned. The movie suggests that you smoke pot continuously. Even seasoned pot smokers know better than that. The cartoon aspect of the film was good as was the talking joint with the bloodshot eyes. If they had incorporated the joint into the film, rather than someone talking as an aside, I think that would have been more entertaining to a stoned audience.

Parental Guide: Over abundance of F-bombs and N-words. Sex and Nudity. Sex talk.

If you liked 'How High' then you'll HATE this movie!
colinfaddis7 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I don't have a whole lot to add to the other reviews that hated this movie, I just wanted to write one and say I hated it, too!! I hated it so much that it prompted me to write my first IMDb review! First off, I should say that I have been a fan of Snoop's since 'The Chronic' and 'Doggystyle' and have been a big fan for the last 20 years, and that is probably why this movie is so disappointing. To start off the movie "Slow Burn" the talking joint is a joke and is kind of racist if you ask me- perpetuates the ignorant black man stereotype. Especially at the end of the movie, "Slow Burn" says something like "No matter what field you in, creative, blue collar, white collar..there's a lot of genius motherf**er$ out there that smoke herb on the regular" and goes on to say "if smoking weed can bring people as opposite as Mac and Devin together, there's nothing weed can't do!" I'll admit that I am a daily weed smoker, but I don't think sentiments about the positive effects of marijuana delivered in this immature manner are NOT helping the cause. Also at the end, Devin(Wiz) gives his valedictorian speech, but stops right after he begins to say "You know, a good friend told me to look at it like this..." and starts singing 'Young Wild N' Free' which, by the way, plays at a TON of transitions in the movie. This kind of brings me to my overall thoughts on this movie, and that it is really just a bad, long-form version of a 'Young Wild N' Free" music video. Plus, as mentioned by other reviewers, the movie is halted several times for music video breaks, and even these are really lame compared to your average rap video. Anyway, I've already written more than I wanted to about this. So in short, this is a terrible movie - bad acting, bad script, non-existent plot! If you want to see a good stoner/rapper movie, go check out 'How High' with Method Man and Redman! That movie is, at the very least, a REAL movie. 'Mac and Devin' is NOT a real movie, watch only if you want to see a complete train-wreck!

Probably the worst movie I've ever seen
edvin-nilsson9 August 2018
At the start of the movie they are warning you that you can't watch this movie without being high. That part was true, and I should have listened.

Though I seriously doubt that being high would help, and even if it did, why not watch an actually fun movie while being high? Twice the pleasure.

jacobs-jody8 July 2012
bad acting, bad cgi, bad storyline

only saving grace for this movie is Teairra Mari's smoking hot body, awesome tits by Carla Howe, oh and the end credits reel. why a person needs to be smoked up to enjoy a movie is totally - well to paraphrase another review - is pathetic. Smoking weed would allow a person to see how crap the movie actually is.

i love Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa, but this is nothing more than a platform to promote 1 awesome song. so what we get drunk, so what we smoke weed... thanks for that, now i can no longer enjoy the song without thinking about this bad movie

THIS MOVIE IS SO INSPIRING
swaggyPeterGriffin16 March 2021
This movie has really inspired me to become a scientist. I saw Mac put the weed into the beaker and when the lightbulb lit up, it blew my freaking mind! I've been trying to figure out the liquid that they had in the beaker before they added the catalyst, aka the marijuana, but man oh man, is being a scientist expensive. I'm buying an eigth of marijuana off of Will and Kaylie a day to keep my experiments going, but I can't seem to figure out what they used in the movie! I've watched this thing over 145 times with no luck! Please help!!!!!

Warning: Spoilers
Everybody who hated this movie is missing the point, why would you even? Its not like they made it with the intent of winning an oscar, the two lead roles are played by rappers for crying out loud. The point was to make a simple yet funny movie to watch while high, in the beginning of the movie they litteraly say: if you arent high, turn off the movie, if you didnt listen to that its not surprising you didnt enjoy the movie, i've watched it a number of times and i enjoy it every time.

Stoner Alert!
SundanceNagrial24 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this last night. I love 'Stoner' movies through and through and the fact that Snoop is the Star fills me with such a delight, as I recall spending nights in the hood with the boys rolling blunts and free-styling in the Garage in those cold winter months. Also Being 27, I graduated from high school ten years a go, so it was nice to see Snoop Finally Graduate. Ha! Good movie to watch it you are stoned, otherwise you might lose interest, its a low budget film and sometimes you wonder if they were as stoned in the editing room as they were on set! Ah yes, there's a weed game too....but you must listen to the little Joint, in order to know what must be done of you. - SundanceNagrial

leifkruse20 May 2017
Wouldn't watch it again. With exception of a few funny and creative moments the movie is very monotonous and has no plot. Usually I like Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa but they do not make good actors. You cannot believe that they still go to High School because they look older than the teachers. The movie confirms every stereotype of ghetto (drug) style. The artificial claim does not hold if you are interested in a good movie. I wanted to break up watching it but I kept because of the music acts that are more high class than the whole movie. I will not watch the second movie.

I do not recommend this

I was very disappointed with this movie. With the great cast , it had potential to be an excellent movie. 50% of the movie was about weed and the other 50% was comedy. The comedy bit was alright, although it was not all funny. It was generally a stoner film. If you weren't getting high while watching it, its pretty boring . The comedy is also targeted for a small audience.Unless your prepared to watch an hour of Snoop dogg an Wiz Khalifa pretending to get high ( and probably getting high ) , don't watch this movie unless you are high.
