"We have known Scotland clutched in the grip of a mighty hand... now we'll set her free!" Signature Ent. in the UK has unveiled a trailer for the action drama Robert the Bruce, made by Australian director Richard Gray. Robert the Bruce is a hard-hitting historical epic covering the turbulent time after William Wallace's victories depicted in Braveheart. The epic story of one of Scotland's greatest heroes will be premiering at the 73rd Edinburgh Film Festival this month. Angus Macfadyen stars (playing the same role he played in Braveheart) with Jared Harris, Zach McGowan, Daniel Portman, Emma Kenney, Melora Walters, Anna Hutchison, Talitha Eliana Bateman, Patrick Fugit, Gabriel Bateman, and Kevin McNally. This also features original music from Scottish national treasure Lulu. Looks a bit dry and talky, but perhaps still an invigorating film about a great legend. Here's the official UK trailer (+ quad poster) for Richard Gray's Robert the Bruce,...

Jason Momoa is set to make his big debut as Aquaman in Zack Snyder’s “Justice League” next year, but before we see the actor as the DC Comics superhero fans can see him as a ruthless thug in “Sugar Mountain.”
The thriller centers around two brothers, deep in debt with Momoa, who fake a disappearance in the wilderness so they’ll have a great survival story to sell. Their hoax quickly turns sour when their plan puts their lives at risk.
The film is directed by Richard Gray and also stars Drew Roy, Haley Webb, Shane Coffey, and Cary Elwes as the local sheriff who begins to suspect fowl play.

American author Abbi Glines is showing a lot of faith in neophyte Australian producer/writer Gary O.Toole.
Glines has just sold an option on her novel While It Lasts to O.Toole, who recently launched production banner Red Rock Pictures after splitting with his producing partner at Three Kings Pictures.
O.Toole was alerted to the novel in 2013 by young Aussie actor Addam Bramich, who was keen to get the rights as he saw the project as a potential starring vehicle for himself.
At the time the novel was in The New York Times young adult best-seller list behind The Fault in our Stars, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Divergent. The producer initiated negotiations with the Alabama-based author and her New York agent and clinched the deal overnight.

Richard Gray is to write and direct a remake of Audition, for producer Mario Kassar...
News
Cinema has few experiences like watching Audition without knowing what's coming. Personally, I used to import region 3 DVDs back when it was incredibly economical to do so, and popped Audition into my DVD player with no idea what was around the corner. A stiff drink was required by the end of it.
Audition was put together by Takashi Miike, but it's now been revealed that one time Carolco supremo Mario Kassar - who produced the likes of Rambo III, Basic Instinct and Terminator 2 - is putting together an English language remake of the film.
Richard Gray has got the job of directing the new movie, having adapted the screenplay himself. Gray's credits to date include Blinder and Mine Games.
At this stage, it's traditional in a news story to describe the film itself a little.

Zombeavers. It’s all in the title. And given that such a title excites us here at Dread Central (but not in a necrophilia-bestiality kind of way, we promise), we figured it was high time to sit down with director Jordan Rubin to get the skinny on his upcoming horror-comedy feature.
Starring Cortney Palm (Sushi Girl), Hutch Dano (Zeke and Luther), Peter Gilroy, Rachel Melvin (Dumb and Dumber To), Jake Weary, Lexi Atkins, and Bill Burr, Zombeavers was written by Jon Kaplan, Al Kaplan, and director Rubin.
It revolves around three college girls who go on a carefree vacation of drinking games, topless sunbathing, and sexual exploration, only to find that their frolicking fun comes to an abrupt end when toxic zombie beavers try to eat them.

The cameras are already rolling on Bryan Singer's "X-Men: Days of Future Past," but we're still learning tidbits about the upcoming sequel.
The latest addition to the sprawling "X-Men" cast is Aussie actor Josh Helman, who can be seen in Tom Cruise's "Jack Reacher" and the upcoming "Mad Max" sequel. Helman also appeared in HBO's "The Pacific" and the Australian crime drama "Animal Kingdom."
We don't have any details yet on who Helman will be playing in the film franchise (honestly, what characters are left for him to play?), but according to The Wrap, he's "expected on set for several weeks." In the past, Bryan Singer has broken the stories himself via Twitter, so perhaps we'll learn more by keeping an eye on the director's feed.
Helman's latest roles include "Blinder," a soccer drama that's out in Australia, and "Mad Max: Fury Road," which has been in limbo for quite some time.

Ivan Sen.s new film Mystery Road, which will open the Sydney Film Festival, is bypassing the established theatrical distributors in a rare departure from the usual distribution model.
Producer David Jowsey and writer-director Sen have decided to release the murder mystery on August 15 via Dark Matter, a company they own with Michael Wrenn.
The rationale: If the film turns a profit, that will go to the filmmakers, not the distributor. The producers are paying for the marketing costs, avoiding the standard 25%-30% fee charged by distributors..
They.ve hired the Melbourne-based Backlot Studios to negotiate terms with exhibitors for a flat fee. Distribution veteran Alan Finney is a consultant and Tracey Mair is coordinating the national marketing and publicity campaign.
The film stars Aaron Pedersen as an Aboriginal cop, Detective Jay Swan, who's called on to investigate the murder of a young Indigenous girl and realises a serial killer is at work.

The $5 million football drama Blinder has posted a dismal box office opening weekend of just $47,394.
Like cricket film Save Your Legs!, which last week posted a disappointing box office opening, the film was distributed too widely. The Aussie Rules footy film was shown on 99 screens giving it a screen average of just $478.

Shot around Torquay, Victoria, Blinder is the story of a disgraced ex-footballer Tom Dunn (Oliver Ackland) who after a ten year stint away from home returns to face the scandal that tore his town apart. Embracing the life lessons his coach (Jack Thompson) once taught him he reignites an old flame and reunites the team, faces up to past mistakes and rekindles their love of football. After everything is done and dusted, it's not about giving your best; it's about doing your best. This schmaltzy finisher to the synopsis is the type of high strung morality that pervades Blinder. This is a shame as the material is compelling and murky; essentially underage sex and rape is buried under a mediocre story witnessed thousands of times before....

It's been a long time between kicks for Jack Thompson. The acting icon takes full advantage in Australian Rules Football film Blinder, some three decades after he last played a coach in the big-screen adaptation of David Williamson's The Club.
.It.s been 30 years since I played a coach . I thought I.m going to have to get myself into condition," the 72 year-old tells If Magazine. "But then I read the script and realised that it wasn.t really a reprise of The Club. This is a lot about the game and there.s some great football in it. It.s about a younger generation and a different aspect of football."

Save Your Legs! has posted one of the worst box office opening weekend performances among Australian films released in recent times.
The comedy, distributed by Madman Entertainment, grossed $164,654 on 176 screens giving it a screen average of just $936 despite attracting generally positive reviews. It is the first major Australian film released in 2013 and stars Brendan Cowell and Stephen Curry as suburban cricketers who travel to India. In total, Save Your Legs! has grossed $188,133.
By way of comparison, a similarly wide local release, comedy Housos Vs. Authority, took $526,166 across 151 screens for a screen average of $3485 on its opening weekend last November. Australian rules football drama Blinder is searching for a new distributor.
A theatrical release was originally planned for January 24 but a clash with another planned release by independent distributor Jump Street Films spurred the change, according to director Richard Gray.
The $5 million film will now be screened for distributors in the next fortnight ahead of a planned wide theatrical release next year. The film also stars Josh Helman (Animal Kingdom, The Pacific), Oliver Ackland (The Slap, Cloudstreet), Rose McIver (The Lovely Bones), Steve Bisley (Red Hill), Anna Hutchison (Wild Boys), Zoe Carides (Death In Brunswick), Bob Morley (Road Train...

Thompson told The Age: "If I get offered a small part in a big Hollywood film, and it doesn't really matter if I'm in it or not, I don't really see the point. The Cabin in the Woods Mondo poster This is one of the coolest movie posters I've seen. An artistic collaboration between Mondo, the collectible boutique arm of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, and the Phantom City Creative, this The Cabin in the Woods poster makes Drew Goddard's horror thriller seem unusual and unique. Here's hoping the movie is as artful as the poster. Written by Goddard and the film's producer (and The Avengers director), Joss Whedon, The Cabin in the Woods is thus described in the press release: "Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods. Bad things happen. If you think you know this story, think again. … The Cabin in the Woods [is] a mind blowing horror film that turns the genre inside out." A Lionsgate release, The Cabin in the Woods stars The Bay / Ex-Girlfriends' Kristen Connolly, Thor / Snow White and the Huntsman's Chris Hemsworth,...

It remains to be seen whether they'll find that Something or that Something will find them. I'm hoping for the latter, so Hemsworth will have that college/high-school-dude jacket torn from him. It'll then be revealed he's a man in his late 20s trying to pass for a teen or facsimile. In fact, The Cabin in the Woods is reportedly filled with unexpected twists and turns. Perhaps that'll be one them. The Cabin in the Woods was written by Drew Goddard, who also directs, and Joss Whedon, who directed Hemsworth (and Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Robert Downey Jr,...
