Having not seen the original Manga, I can't comment on the conversion aspect. But being classified under the comedy genre doesn't quite fit.

The premise is a guy almost get drown from accidentally falling from a bridge into a river but is rescued to this village of strange inhabitants. There's reason this guy was on the bridge in the first place. The citizens of this village are very strange in terms of appearance and personality. There is Hoshi (which means star) but he has a literally star-like face. There's birdman, a cross dress nun... and so on and so on.

I think it's commenting on the homeless and how some are actually fringe but intelligent people.

It's serious in that the theme it tackles are more philosophical than the moral perspective. The setting is interesting and obviously the many characters.

Each 1/2 hour episode subdivides further in 3 sub-episodes or segments. Eac episode cycles through the inhabitants and leads eventually to a show down. (But you have to see the Special as to how it all ends.) I don't think the costumes and faces is trying to be over the top or to be weird for being weird, but rather symbolic in some other sense.

Very enjoyable that it's different enough from all other clones but staying on course.

Can't wait for the movie finale.
