. . . a 92-second animated film tribute to one of my favorite actors on the Old Time TV Channel growing up, Harold Jay Smith. Since an earlier live-action feature--MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON--had stolen some of the pizzazz from the surname of "Smith" by the time Harold became a professional thespian, his agent decided to anchor his middle name with the fan designation fondly bestowed upon him during his younger years as a wildly popular Canadian lacrosse star for the Toronto Tecumseh's, and became Tinsel Town's Jay Silver Heels. Son of a World War One hero, Mr. Smith has been inducted for the Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, after years of working as a stand-up comedian on John Carson's Tonight Show and as a TV guest star guiding The Brady Bunch through the Grand Canyon, among other memorable roles, Jay suffered a stroke which ultimately claimed his life.

There seems to be some sort of a typographical . . .

. . . error in the title of this Bullwinkle episode's "Fractured Fairy Tale," SLIPPING BEAUTY. Since Frances Beauty never slips during this picture, but eventually lapses into a century-long snooze, it appears fairly obvious that the main titles dudes were instructed by their script to devise a namesake card reading SLEEPING BEAUTY. Alternatively, maybe Bullwinkle's rights and clearances team were under the impression that the Walled Dizzy Corporation held a copyright on the SLEEPING BEAUTY heading, since it had traumatized America's Baby Boom tykes less than two years earlier with an animated feature by that title in which the Evil Queen transforms herself into a giant dragon. The misnamed SLIPPING BEAUTY is far more suitable for youngsters, displaying no dragons whatsoever.

Heroes!?

Rocky and Bullwinkle arrive in Washington to a heroes' welcome. The upsidasium is put in a compound, guarded by Marines. Boris and Natasha are going to blow it up but realize they and their superior would die in the blast. So, a new plan is to steal it, putting it in trucks. Boris disguises himself as Rocky and gets past the guards. The boys try to put a stop to things but are unable to. What will they do next? The Fractured Fairy Tale is the story of "Slipping Beauty" who enlists the help of a witch to put a spell on her so a handsome prince will come along and kiss her. She sort of picks the wrong witch. I forget how unfunny the Mr. Peabody episodes are. This time he and Sherman visit Emperor Nero, who takes violin lessons. The whole thing is quite dull.

James Bond fans are sure to enjoy . . .

. . . Part 30 of the Up-See-Daisy-Yum Saga, since it provides the template for Secret Agent Double Oh Seven's spoof of America's Fort Knox in GOLD-FINGER. Of course, the characters of this Bullwinkle Show episode are less cartoon-dish than those of Broccoli's live-action feature. Mr. Big is a far more ominous bad guy than Bond's title dude, Mr. Gold-finger. Furthermore, the three-dimensional Fort Knox guards rescued by 007 are way more inept, ludicrous and unbelievable than the sentries guarding Up-See-Daisy-Yum storage facility Fort Knickknack in this animated short. About the only aspect the Bond picture innovates better is the spray-painted bare babe.
