a soft landing
chandlerlbell25 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
After six seasons, we've arrived. It didn't end with a bang or a twist, just a soft place to land after a whirlwind of a season, and it was beautiful.

The themes of the cyclical nature of life and the continued impact those that are gone have on us were delivered in a way that seems more lifelike than grand.

Thank you, this is us, for ending with a hug and one last lesson, that it is not pointless.

A balm on life. Thank you.
elliottremblay25 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I must begin this review with the following statement: there could be no other end than this. This end was the sweetest, most complete and most conclusive that anyone who followed this beautiful story and this great family could have wished. It couldn't have been a turnaround or a stunning punch line. The This Is Us series finale was exactly what a series finale should be: a conclusion. In their bed, Rebecca and Jack said whatever was most relevant, they explained that they have succeeded, that Rebecca has succeeded, that their children are happy and fulfilled, that they will remember their mother and their father. That the image of a family is the first that cherishes and excites us. This Is Us was able to bring to light this lasting memory of our first home to everyone. The smell, the image, the memory, our past, our future, our life. Us. The final episode was perfectly what it should be, in no way this episode should be explosive, full of twists and fast with breathless scenes. It proposed the introspection of each, the summary of each, the memory of each and the synthesis of the life of this small family around which all these adorable characters revolved during these decades. If you watch it again and listen to it, you will literally catch a life moral in every dialogue.

At the end of this episode, I not only felt that this story ended, that Jack and Rebecca had accomplished their task of parenting, or that Kevin, Kate and Randall had accomplished their life, and are full of ambition for their future. No, I felt that each dialogue applied to my life, the one I had, the one I lead now and the one I will lead in the future. All these dialogues from everyone pierced me. The series finale of This Is Us is a balm on everyone's life. A balm on each of our lives, our past, our present, our future, our love, our family, our friends, and above all, a balm on death, which without it, would not allow life to exist.

In this way, as respectfully, politely and kindly as possible, I strongly consider that anyone who criticizes this episode, as not being up to a series finale, or considering the episode to be long, boring and he offered too many scenes in the past, I doubt very much that these people understood the whole point of the thing: a real conclusion, an introspection, a balm on life.

On the other hand, for anyone considering that the series left several unresolved elements, it seems important to mention that this episode was not designed to solve all the mysteries; since they were all already resolved, and had been for several episodes. I believed for several years that the series would give all its answers at the true end of the last episode, but I realized very quickly during the course of the last season, that This Is Us was much more brilliant than that, this series gave us this balm on life, that's what This Is Us was, and that's what the series finale was able to put forward without hesitation and with shine.

This episode didn't have to be emotionally destructive or some kind of emotional roller coaster, it had to be just what it was to perfection. I cannot thank Dan Folgeman enough for creating this story and for encouraging his team to bring us this wonderful and incredible story, which I will definitely be listening to again in the years to come.

"It's quite something, isn't it? Dan Folgeman's This Is Us."

Simple. Beautiful. Wonderful. Nothing left for interpretation.
CHUDMasterPatriot25 May 2022
This series finale was incredible and beautiful. There was nothing left for interpretation. It was simple and great. There's nothing else to say but goodbye to the Pearsons and everyone connected to Jack, Rebecca, and The Big Three.

Well Done
The second to last episode felt like the finale and this felt like more of an epilogue. A nice way to wrap up a great season and great show. It was fun seeing the new old scenes that were filmed a few years ago.

A big 10 for the big 3
justw-6324825 May 2022
A fitting end to an incredible series.

Was somewhat steady going into the last 10 minutes, but then it hits you like a ton of bricks. The series really went full circle, with great call backs to the early episodes (including the very first) and a final goodbye to Jack and Rebecca.

Great parenting and life lessons to be learned here. Whether we like it or not, life will pass us by, so it's important to appreciate the small things and the little moments.

When you're young, you want to be older.
hobogirl-3960325 May 2022
When you're old, you want to be younger. At a point in everyone's life they will feel this.

I just wanted to see 3 kids that grew up and have a happy life from being raised by loving parents. This touching series was able to succeed in that respect.

I'm going to miss the Pearson family every Tuesday.

Beautifully simplistic ending to a beautiful show
adamsmith-9469325 May 2022
This show always knew how to tug at your heartstrings. It became a staple of the show to be able to do this so effortlessly, while maintaining the ability to showcase a perfectly imperfect family dynamic throughout several decades.

Always a brilliantly written series, and this episode was no exception. We were provided with enough of a conclusion to the story to keep us satisfied. We knew (thanks to the cast) that this episode was going to feel like a hug, which it definitely did. We didn't need to be given one last shock at the end, or a final twist. It's always been about love, loss, and family. This is what we saw within these final 40 minutes. I will definitely miss this show, and this final episode has taught me to enjoy the little moments while you are in them. Thanks, This is Us.

Maybe not the ending we are expecting
fersiaf25 May 2022
This is a good episode, however, for me, not worthy as a finale. The Train could have been the better ending. Well, the last episode took a bold risk of keeping to its element of putting special memories together to tell a story. They could have just considered a funeral where the big three shares their eulogies and in the end we find out that Rebecca also prepared something for her funeral. But then again, This is us sticks to it creative way of storytelling. Putting together moments where we the viewers may learn a lesson like appreciating each moment before it becomes a memory, that we when were young excited to grow up and then when we're already adults we wish to go back.

Honestly, I am a bit disappointed (Id given it a 9 as my way of showing I still appreciated the series). While watching, can't help but think how are these scenes selected, why this particular timeline.. i am sure from the scenes where they were children to young adults there could have been more special memories, but why this.

Also, who finds it weird during the cottage scene it could go like complete quietness and then when they speak there's this chirping of birds that go with them as they speak. Sound mixing in this part is annoying, volume goes up when they start speaking, fades, complete silence and then volume goes up again.

I wish also they have shown the concert scene of Jack more with montage of very special moments..

An Epilogue after the Finale
GerMalaz25 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Yet, there is a lesson Randall learnt, the one Kate knew, get the little moments. That's why he looks at Jack and nods, and he is doing the same in the last scene.

Could have ended in the last episode but it was not superfluos.

A fitting goodbye
estathena225 May 2022
One last look into the Pearson Family as they say goodbye to the matriarch, their mom, Jack & Miguel's Rebecca. It truly is a day in the life of The Big Three as they remember the quiet days, the every day, those moments too often taken for granted until they're remembered & cherished for the sweet simplicity.

Six seasons of family that evolved into all this final episode captures & encapsulates - it's collective sigh as it prepares itself for what's next, tomorrow.

Profound

Warning: Spoilers
Part of me wanted a big final twist and part of me wanted to see the big three in the future carrying out their aspirations, but I think this simple episode was a beautiful way to end the series. I struggle to come up with the words as to how profound this show is and this episode especially...but it truly is. This show has always been about life and it's so interesting how this episode captures a moment in time that is remembered throughout the rest of the Big Three's lives. This season has really focused on looking back and wanting life to slow down. The series ends beautifully, with Jack telling Rebecca she will still be able to be with them along the way as they go about the rest of their lives. "It's quite something, isn't it? Us."

fersiaf summed it up perfectly
m-rugen25 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Their review was absolutely spot on. This was a fine episode, but the three preceding episodes were nothing short of amazing. It would have been hard to top any of those episodes, specifically The Train, but this was a little underwhelming for a series finale of such a fine show.

While the scenes of the kids were nice, we didn't want to see 40 minutes of the young Big 3. The majority of the episode focused on them and Randall. Outside of the small scene between Kevin and Nicky, and the small scene between Kate and Toby, you didn't see them again until the final 10 minutes or so of the episode.

Altogether, absolutely beautiful acting and equal happiness and sadness. But I would have preferred more screen time to older Kevin and Kate. Perhaps they filmed more scenes and were cut to get it down to a normal runtime as opposed to an extended run.

A worthy, beautiful episode of a fantastic series but an underwhelming finale. I hope awards season is kind to them, they deserve every award possible.

I'll be in the minority here....
marymcfarland-0186625 May 2022
This was...fine, and fine is not what I was looking for in this series finale. It had its moments, but when the credits rolled, I said to myself, "Huh. Guess that was it."

The Train was far superior to Us. Thumbs down all you want. This last episode simply did not give me what I was hoping for.

Oh well....time to move on to whatever other thing I'll be watching.

EDIT: Critiquing reviewers who express opinions that are not in keeping with whatever you felt about this episode does not help anyone. Save that nonsense for the social media dumpster fire arena. This place is meant to opine on the program itself so folks can get a sense of whether it's something they'd like to watch.

The Little moments
hashaamzeb23 July 2022
Its been a while I have written a review on IMDb, but after going through some of the reviews here and seeing some unsatisfied reviewers here, I was compelled to drop my two bits. Yes there were no big twists here, not much sobbing, no over the mile drama but that was the perfect conclusion to a series which was built on the foundation of little things in life and how those little moments shape the rest of our lives, how it makes us, US!

They just picked a normal, perfect, lazy Saturday of Pearsons family and glimpsed into it. No commitments, no thanksgivings, no Christmases, no big moments, just a cozy, rainy, lazy Saturday at home spent among the parents and kids. What a perfect way to end this show, I swear there was no other perfect way to conclude this. I've never felt so satisfied with any other series finale than This is Us, it was top of its game! Cherishing the little small moments with BIG implications later in life.

I hope we all learn a thing or two from this TV series and make this world a better place for our generations to come. So long Pearsons! You did well!!

The simplicity of this episode WAS the point...
cosmochickita28 May 2022
Yes, initially, I too was disappointed. It's not that I wanted a big reveal or a twist, oh no, but I think I wanted for this to pull at my heartstrings one more time, and so I was waiting for some profound emotional moments.. whether from flashbacks or funeral time.

But I think given us this "soft landing" episode that felt more like a run-of-the-mill middle-season episode was the point: we're always so focused on wanting more or thinking of the future, that we forget to internalize the simple moments, the memories that together make up the tapestry of our lives.

Think about it. We're all saying how we're gonna miss this show and this family. Well then what better gift than to give us just a few more minutes, a few more scenes of beautiful Pearson family life.

For having lost a parent not long ago, trust me... you'd give anything for just one more laugh, one more scene, one more dinner or evening in the living room together, one more simple moment.

Also, there was no other way:
  • a shock twist or ending would have caused controversy and people either loving or hating (think Lost finale)
  • a view to all the futures, same, some would have loved, others not (think Will & Grace finale)...

I give it an 8 because:
  • yes some dialog and scenes felt forced in that attempt to pull at heartstrings or find meaning.. like that look between pregnant Deja and older Randall at the end, or Rebecca trying to be funny saying she doesn't want to watch them shower.

  • and because my need for symmetry wasn't fulfilled, Randall got more screen time and got the final look of the show to his dad. Why him? Why couldn't Rebecca, lying next to Jack, just have closed her eyes and fade to black.

This was a soft landing. Someone else said: an epilogue to the true finale The Train. Now we know not to expect anything grand, we should watch it again, no expectations, a final goodbye just watching the kids and the flashbacks one final time.

Goodbye Pearsons. Thank you Dan Fogelman.

Farewell to this masterpiece.
kadiri_alex26 May 2022
One word for this show is CONSISTENCY! This is us consistently had me in my feelings, consistently taught me real life lessons. This last episode made me wanna cry for no apparent reason. Maybe Nostalgia, maybe the fact that I'll no longer get to await new episodes. God, I love this show and I'm gonna miss it. I'm thankful that I got to know about it and watch it. The storytelling is beyond topnotch, it's out of this world. I'll miss them all, the triplets and all the other Pearsons that graced my screen and made me laugh and cry and smile all these years. I've come to know and love them all like they were my real life friends. Bye TIU.

"Us"
ldochnenko26 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So I see a lot of reviews saying it's not what people expected for a finale. I personally thought it was a very fitting send off. There's a review about how we seen the "little big three" more than the adult "Big Three" I viewed this as how the memories of an upbringing like this shaped each of them and how it affected how they raised their own children and how Little Jack went on to raise his own daughter. I took from this, that ideals and such are made and passed down through generations. So even though the ones who started the traditions (ie Pin the tail on the donkey) aren't here, their memory lives on in the traditions they created whilst alive.

I personally thought this finale was perfectly done and fitting for such a beautiful series.the only issue I had was where was Philip at the funeral? I don't recall seeing him.

One of the Best Endings
shankay-6333026 May 2022
One of the best series finales of a show I've seen. "The Train" episode was really the finale in terms of closure and story, but this episode "Us" gave you that little extra the remember them by. I really feel like this final season brought everything back and made up for some dwindling pizazz of prior seasons. So happy This Is Us will go out this way!

If you did not bring a hankie or kleenix really something is wrong with ya.

But that like one reviewer says that you may not get what you want in life but that it is about moving on for the sake of your own families and yourselves.

How that Kate will be a teacher and mentor, Kevin will hopefully continue to act as well as be there for his family after having issues with finding a love interest, and Randall that is on the fast track in politics.

As someone in the family will become a grandparent in the not too distant future. Should had been a two-hour series finale and not just one.

But really ended all too soon IMHO. Thank you for six seasons you all. Will miss ya.

Future and past, the inheritance of generations.
wisamo-9225 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Some reviewers can see weakness and deficiencies in this ending..maybe some additions would have given it a nicer appearance.

But I acknowledge the beauty and deep meanings of the words that Jack said to his two sons when he was teaching them to shave.

So, to live the beautiful moment with those we love with all its details and engraved it in our memories because it will return one day after the passing of the years and a flash in our imaginations to be another existence for those who left us, through ours memories and repeat their good actions.. And this is what Jack meant to Rebecca in the last scene.

Also when Randall looks at Deja, he remembers his father when he was looking at him with passion as a child.

A very beautiful and smooth finale, just like how Chris Sullivan described it "a nice soft landing".

I am going to miss this show so much; the incredible writing, the talented cast, the nuanced characters, THE BIG THREE! I am so grateful for those 6 years.

An ambiguous ending...
wip11-253-72703625 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I jumped onto the show late. Most I'm the women in my life we're watching it and I just wrote it off as another cheesy drama. Boy was I wrong, This Is Us slowly became one of my all time favorite shows. I was glad that they were able to end on their own terms. So often, shows keep going and going until the material gets stale and it loses all its luster. With that being said, this finale doesn't do a whole lot for me. As I was watching I was waiting for a big turn, a big reveal, a truly defining and impactful moment. Instead, what we got was just another episode. Maybe my expectations were too high, maybe I need to watch it again. But all I feel is a little let down. Don't get me wrong, this is a beautiful episode with many appearances from characters past and present. However, so much is left unresolved. Maybe that's on purpose but who knows. If I were to write this episode, first it would've been double the length because honestly it felt rushed. I need some kind of flash forward for the Big 3 and their kids. More of Jack Jr, does Randall win the presidency? Kate and Phillip opening more schools, Kevin expanding the non-profit. So many storylines untouched and I think that even another 20 to 30 minutes would give space for this episode to breathe. I'll miss this show and I'm sad to see it go this way.

one simple question.... WHY?????
tarek_fathy25 May 2022
Why didn't they put only useful 15 minutes from this episode to the train episode and make it the finale !!! It would be a great ending episode.

However... it is the most beautiful drama show in the history.

The negative reviewers seem to have consistently & fundamentally missed the entire ideology of the show.

Why were you even watching if this is your interpretation of the finale?

I feel sincere pity that you took so little out of a good finale.
