Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping was – yep, it’s time to call it - the funniest film of 2016. For those who blinked a little too long and didn’t catch it on its brief appearance in UK cinemas, the DVD release is your chance to find out what you’ve missed: a hilarious parody of current pop music’s excesses that blends acerbic criticism of predatory gossip shows and social media mobs with a sweet story of three feuding rappers struggling to mend their friendship. The fact that this touching tale also features Seal fending off a pack of wolves, Justin Timberlake dressed as a fish, and a bagpiper playing a lament at a beloved pet turtle’s Viking-inspired funeral comes as no surprise...

The Lonely Island joined forces 15 years ago. Instead of waiting around and struggling to find work, the trio — Jorma Taccone, Andy Samberg, and Akiva Schaffer — began generating their own, which led to them working on Saturday Night Live. “Lazy Sunday,” “Dick in a Box,” “Laser Cats,” and their other digital shorts are some of SNL’s most […]

This has been a fun, and weird, and uneven, and sometimes upsetting (Remember when He Who Shall Not Be Named hosted?) season, and it has been a pure joy to write about it, in both good times and bad. But as the great Nelly Furtado once sang, all good things come to an end, and so tonight we witness Season 41’s swan song-- guided by Fred Armisen, famous for his own run on SNL, his musical skill on Late Night with Seth Meyers, his IFC shows Portlandia and Documentary Now, and that time we let him play Obama because he was the most ethnic cast member SNL had. Cold Open: Hillary Clinton celebrates her inevitable victory while drinking at a bar with a slightly bitter Bernie Sanders. The two set aside their differences for a dance together. When people talk about how much better SNL was when it was first starting out,...

Andy Samberg is the kind of inherently funny guy who just seemed destined for comedy fame. That destiny wouldn't have happened quite as quickly as it did were it not for his work with The Lonely Island. Thanks to a few clutch songs on Saturday Night Live that went viral (the first being "Lazy Sunday"), Samberg and his fellow Lonely Islanders Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone became the go-to team for creating songs both hilarious and also insidiously catchy in their own right. The Lonely Island don't exclusively do musical spoofs -- they also made the great, underseen Hot Rod -- but for their next project together they are going all in on pop culture. It's called Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping and if the first red band trailer for it is...

Today is definitely no “Lazy Sunday” for Emmy Awards host Andy Samberg. The Saturday Night Live alum, who is hosting his first major awards show, has a lot of ideas about what will go down on Sunday, Sept. 20, but his guess is as good as anyone’s. “When you take on something big like this, where you have 15-to-20 million people watching across the world, it’s a lot of different senses of humor,” he told The New York Times in an interview late last week. “One person’s [...]...

All this week, we’re presenting the Vulture TV Awards, honoring the best in television from the past year. The nominees for Best Viral Moment are: Nicole Kidman on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Jon Snow at a dinner party, Late Night With Seth Meyers "Too Many Cooks," Adult Swim Anne Hathaway’s “Wrecking Ball” performance, Lip Sync Battle Australia takedown, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver And the winner is ..."Too Many Cooks" When "Lazy Sunday" first aired on Saturday Night Live back in 2005, the TV universe seemed to shift a bit on its axis. (Perhaps because it really did: The Lonely Island video, one of the earliest professionally created YouTube sensations, helped usher in the age of internet-tv convergence.) It would be a stretch to suggest Adult Swim’s "Too Many Cooks" will end up having a similar impact, but for a few weeks last November, Casper Kelly...

The title of The Lonely Island’s feature-length comedy has been revealed, and it’s suitably weird. Conner4Real will find the satirical musicians playing members of a broken-up boy band, who reunite when one member’s (Andy Samberg) rap album is an embarrassing, possibly career-killing bomb. Today also brings word that Tim Meadows, another Saturday Night Live alum, has joined the cast.
Meadows, recently seen in canceled NBC comedy Marry Me, will play Harry, the rapper’s irrepressibly optimistic yet heavily overworked manager, who encourages the rapper to get back together with his old bandmates (Jorma Taccone and Akiva Shaffer).
Judd Apatow is producing the pic, which was directed by Taccone and Schaffer (who previously delivered comedies Hot Rod and MacGruber). The film is being envisioned as a skewering of content-light musical documentaries like Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, One Direction: This Is Us and Katy Perry: Part of Me.

Universal Pictures today announced that production begins this week on Top Secret Untitled Lonely Island Movie, starring digital-shorts superstars Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, who are collectively known as The Lonely Island.
Co-directed by Schaffer and Taccone, the comedy from producer Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, Bridesmaids, upcoming Trainwreck) will be set in the world of music.
Taccone, Samberg and Schaffer have been friends since junior high school in Berkeley, California. In 2000, the trio began writing, directing and producing its own brand of comedy and showcasing it on www.thelonelyisland.com. The three writing partners are responsible for creating the popular SNL “Digital Shorts,” which reinvigorated the series and spurred many water-cooler moments over the past decade.

Production began in Los Angeles this week on an untitled musical comedy feature that will star the Lonely Island trio of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, Universal Pictures announced earlier today.
The Judd Apatow-produced movie will skewer musical documentaries like Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and One Direction: This Is Us, centering on a rapper (Samberg) whose latest album tanks, forcing him to reteam with his former boy band in order to stop his career from going down the tubes.
Of course, that there would be a satirical element to the Lonely Island’s movie, currently shooting as “Top Secret Untitled Lonely Island Movie,” is only to be expected, given that the group first came to international attention with irreverent Saturday Night Live videos like “Dick in a Box,” “I’m On A Boat” and “Lazy Sunday.”

It's hard to believe that YouTube is just 10 years old. It seems like it's been around forever, and it's difficult to recall how we ever lived without it.
Nonetheless, it was only 10 years ago this week, on April 23, 2005, that YouTube posted its first user-uploaded video. (It was a 19-second clip called "Me at the Zoo," uploaded by site co-creator Jawed Karim, showing him commenting on his own visit to the elephant exhibit at the San Diego Zoo. It's been viewed 19 million times.)
Today, YouTube seems a ubiquitous part of our lives. But whether you post your own videos or simply watch those made by others, you're adding to the growth of a platform that has forever altered the formerly passive way we used to watch television. Here are 10 ways YouTube has changed what we watch and how we watch it.

On the eve of its 40th anniversary special (though the anniversary itself isn't until October), what is left to say about "Saturday Night Live"? There have been multiple books written about the show, several documentaries, countless essays — riding the never-ending roller-coaster between "Saturday Night Dead" and "Saturday Night Lives Again!" — best-ofs, worst-ofs, and every other kind of list you can think of. I don't know that anything I write over the next few pages will provide new insight into one of the most influential comedy shows ever made, but I wondered if you could tell the story of the show — through good times and bad, through revolutions and evolutions and retrenchments — by looking at its sketches. I wound up picking 21 in all: some among the show's most famous, some obscure but important. These aren't meant as a definitive breakdown of the best "SNL" ever had to offer, but as a...

There's a lot that will seem different this weekend when the 40th season of "Saturday Night Live" premieres, with Chris Pratt as guest host. Many old faces and voices gone, some new ones just arrived, and even some on-air talent demoted But more than those cosmetic changes, what should we be expecting from the four-decade-old comedy show?
For one thing, we can expect the chaos and growing pains of last season to continue. That doesn't mean the show's in crisis; indeed, for a show that's been around so long, it's all but inevitable to muddle through periods of upheaval.
About once a decade, "SNL" seems to go through what losing sports teams call "a rebuilding year," scrapping much of the cast and starting from scratch with newbies. Unfortunately, "SNL" fans have to watch them learn on the job. We have to endure horrible seasons like the 1985-86 year or the 1994-95 stretch.

The Lonely Island – the satirical comedy and music group featuring Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone – currently has a movie in development with Judd Apatow onboard as a producer.

Universal Pictures is developing The Lonely Island’s feature after acquiring a pitch from the group. Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone will star and produce the comedy along with Apatow (Knocked Up, Bridemaids, This Is 40).
The Lonely Island achieved fame during Samberg’s stint on Saturday Night Live, which ran from 2005 to 2011. Schaffer and Taccone were writers on the NBC comic sketch show. Thanks to a jump start on "Saturday Night Live," the comedy hip-hop group known as The Lonely Island has become a viral sensation online. It all started with "Lazy Sunday" and has since spread to hilarious hit tracks like "Dick in a Box" and "I'm on a Boat." Now the musical trio formed by Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone are heading to the big screen in a currently untitled comedy at Universal Pictures with Judd Apatow on board to produce. All three of the members will star in the film, but the only story details known at this time are that it will be set in the music world, which makes perfect sense. If you're not familiar with The Lonely Island for some reason, here's some videos to watch: THR reports the film will be co-directed by Schaffer and Taccone, which is both surprising and not for two different reasons.

There's probably a lot of overlap between people who love ice cream and people who love "Saturday Night Live," and to capitalize on that affection, Ben & Jerry's is creating four new flavors inspired by sketches on the long-running series.
The ice cream purveyors made the announcement this week that they're creating a new line of flavors called SNL Batches in honor of the series' upcoming 40th season. Four flavors will be released throughout the year, and two have already been announced. They are:
Gilly's Catastrophic Crunch, inspired by the maniacal Kristen Wiig character, made with chocolate and sweet cream ice creams with caramel clusters, fudge-covered almonds, and a marshmallow swirl; and Lazy Sunday, inspired by one of "SNL"'s first digital shorts (and Lonely Island collaborations), starring Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell, made with vanilla cake batter ice cream with chocolate and yellow cupcake pieces and a chocolate frosting swirl.

"Saturday Night Live" has brought us a number of memorable comedy songs over the years. "D**k in a Box," "Lazy Sunday," "Jack Sparrow" and "I'm on a Boat" were highlights of the Andy Samberg era. Now that's he's gone it appears the ladies have taken over. On "SNL" this weekend host Anna Kendrick and a number of the cast members premiered an opus that we'll assume will be known "Dongs All Over the World." They are four international "nasty girls" who are doing every "dong" in he world. It features Kendrick rapping (and arguably better than her stylings in "Pitch Perfect") and a cameo from dance music stars Icona Pop. You may love it, you may hate it, but you can't stop watching. A comedy about cops seems like a no-brainer, and yet, the concept has been barely explored by most networks. With uniforms, a strict code of conduct and regular exposure to the nutjobs of a modern-day American city, the police force, it appears to me, could be a lucrative comedy goldmine. So props to Brooklyn Nine-Nine, certainly the best new offering from Fox this fall, for entertaining the audience on its own terms, with its well-cast crop of actors and immediately distinctive spin on the workplace comedy.
There are some familiar parts at work at the precinct in Brooklyn Nine-Nine – the show nimbly lifts some of the same character archetypes that worked so well for NBC shows The Office and Parks and Recreation. When Andy Samberg joined “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” plenty of “Saturday Night Live” fans probably figured his best comedic days were behind him. How could a sitcom format contain the madcap brilliance of his Digital Shorts? “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” is funny in a different way from “Lazy Sunday,” “Dick in a Box,” and other “SNL” classics. But it’s still really funny. One of its strengths is that it isn’t just a star vehicle for Samberg. It’s an ensemble from the “Parks and Recreation” team of Mike Schur and Dan Goor that gives all the varied cast mates lots of shots at being funny.

They eventually showed it to him and he agreed to air it and encouraged them to do more. It was their next one, "Lazy Sunday," which put them on the map. From that point on, Lonely Island's digital shorts helped define the next seven seasons of SNL. We all know the huge ones — "Dick in a Box," "Iran So Far," "Laser Cats" — and the many Lonely Island music videos. Last night’s Saturday Night Live, hosted by Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine with musical guest Kendrick Lamar, reminded me of high school. Not because of Levine’s acting, which was worse than the time I tried to explain to my math teacher that I had "a make-up drum lesson" for the third week in a row. Nor because Levine’s comedic timing went totally missing (again, "make-up drum lesson"). And not because I was simply over it about half way through, but rather because so many of this week's sketches represented high school archetypes.

For every insta-classic Maya Rudolph episode, there was a stinker hosted by Daniel Craig; for every innovative new sketch (come on, you liked “The Californians” the first time it aired), there was a bit that wore out its welcome long ago (did we really need to see Gilly one last time?).
Still, the year’s five most popular sketches exemplify why EW’s Ken Tucker thinks Saturday Night Live is “displaying a surge of renewed energy it hasn’t shown for a long time” — they’re fresh, funny, and largely original,...

Andy Samberg is a free agent. Having left Saturday Night Live, the funnyman and burgeoning movie star is revealing SNL secrets in the Playboy's July/August 20Q issue, on newsstands now, from how he got Natalie Portman to talk dirty to his "funny and gross" kiss with Scarlett Johansson.
Video: Andy Samberg Gives Adam Sandler 'Brass Balls'
"It was that scene where I play Kuato, the head from Total Recall that's coming out of Bill Hader's stomach, and she's the female Kuato in Maya Rudolph's stomach," explains Andy of his live smooth with Scarlett. "It wasn't so much a kiss as licking each other's tongues. It was a kiss the audience definitely didn't want to see happen."
Samberg's SNL reign lasted seven seasons and was highlighted by his many digital shorts that featured such stars as Justin Timberlake, Steven Spielberg and Natalie Portman singing and getting silly.

During the regular TV season, I spend many a Sunday morning recapping the previous evening’s Saturday Night Live. With the show in hibernation till fall, I thought this weekend I’d take a trip down Recent Memory Lane and count down the 10 best sketches of Season 37. From a Kermit the Frog encounter to an all-star Weekend Update, here are my picks:

The last time I spoke to Will Forte, it was a transitional time in his career. He was a year removed from his eight-season run on "Saturday Night Live" and the box office disappointment of his starring vehicle, "MacGruber." At that time, It seemed things were just starting to happen again for Forte, which left him quite reflective. Now, it's safe to say, things are very much happening. So much so that we've dubbed this weekend, "The Weekend of Will Forte."
This weekend there are two wide release movies hitting theaters: "Rock of Ages" and Adam Sandler's "That's My Boy." Will Forte is in both of these movies. Also, Sunday is Will Forte's birthday. The Weekend of Will Forte, indeed. Forte is currently in Ireland filming the indie movie "Run and Jump," but he took the time to call in to address his celebratory weekend, the latest on Alexander Payne's "Nebraska,...

Just because Andy Samberg plays Adam Sandler's son in "That's My Boy" doesn't mean the latest graduate of "Saturday Night Live" is following in the Happy Madison hero's footsteps. The 33-year-old is definitely forging his own funnyguy path.
For starters, Samberg left the NBC mainstay of his own, albeit quiet, accord, opting to say farewell to the show after seven years with simply a pair of digital shorts. Secondly, he's keeping one foot on the small screen. Following promotions for "That's My Boy," he's heading to the U.K. to work on a show for the BBC.
Still, working on a film with Sandler – the first of three, with "Hotel Transylvania" and "Grown Ups 2" to come – feels like a strong start to a solid film career. Could an "SNL" spin-off flick like "Shy Ronnie" be far behind?
Adam Sandler has done so many movies and you guys both started in "Saturday Night Live.

Chicago – As the chorus of “Goodbye Ruby Tuesday” signaled the recent season finale of “Saturday Night Live,” it was Kristen Wiig that said farewell to the show, but not before a lingering twirl from Andy Samberg, who just announced his own departure. The next phase for Samberg begins with a co-starring role beside Adam Sandler, in the film “That’s My Boy.”
Andy Samberg was born in Mill Valley, California, and grew up watching “Saturday Night Live,” as a self-described obsessed fan of the show. He spend two years at the University of California, Santa Cruz, before transferring after two years to New York University, to study filmmaking. It was with his childhood friends, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, that he would form a comedy troupe called Lonely Island. The trio landed a gig on Saturday Night Live on their writing staff, and Samberg broke out as a featured cast member on the show.

"I felt like it went better than I ever could have imagined there," the star - known for his digital shorts including "Lazy Sunday" and "D*** in a Box," with Justin Timberlake - continued.

Somewhere, Shy Ronnie is shedding a single tear. After seven years of hilarity on Saturday Night Live, Andy Samberg has officially decided not to return to the show next season. There was definitely much speculation that the Digital Short pioneer would move on, especially when you consider her last clip was entitled “Lazy Sunday 2″, a tribute to video that made him famous back in 2005. From there the Digital Short segment often became the highlight of the otherwise live sketch show, providing classics like “D-ck In A Box,” “I’m On A Boat,” “J–z In My Pants,” and many many more.
“It’s an incredibly emotional and strange moment in my life,” he told The New York Times. “Obviously it’s not a huge shock, but I did officially decide not to come back…Something about it just feels like it’s the moment.” Perhaps it has something to do...

"Saturday Night Live" is going to be down at least two regulars going into next season. Andy Samberg has confirmed that he's leaving the sketch comedy show.
Samberg broke the news to the New York Times on Friday (June 1) that he will join Kristen Wiig as the most recent alums of the program.
"It's an incredibly emotional and strange moment in my life," Samberg tells the publication. "Obviously it's not a huge shock, but I did officially decide not to come back."
He adds that leaving "SNL" was "one of the hardest decisions I've ever made...Something about it just feels like it's the moment. My contract's up and I did so much more than I ever thought I would ever even do."
Samberg joined the program in 2005 and became popular for his digital shorts including "I'm on a Boat" and "Lazy Sunday."
It may not be the last for funny man on the show.

Andy Samberg's announcement that he'll no longer be a part of "Saturday Night Live" starting next season surprised precisely no one. The comedian's possible exit had been rumored for months, with buzz recently reaching a boiling point thanks to the closing lyrics of "Lazy Sunday 2," his final Digital Short: "On these New York streets I hone my fake rap penmanship/ That's how it began, and that's how I'mma finish it."
But even though Samberg is walking away after a seven-season run, don't think the comedian arrived at the decision easily. MTV News spoke with Samberg and his co-star (and fellow "SNL" alum) Adam Sandler as they promoted "That's My Boy," and the Lonely Island artist...

It's the end of an era for Andy Samberg, as the Lonely Island frontman has finally confirmed his exit from "Saturday Night Live."
Samberg spoke with The New York Times on Friday (June 1) and described the decision to depart "SNL" as "an incredibly emotional and strange moment in my life." He added, "Obviously it's not a huge shock, but I did officially decide not to come back."
No, it isn't a huge shock — Samberg's final Digital Short, a sequel to "Lazy Sunday," strongly suggested his impending exit — but it's nonetheless "one of the hardest decisions I've ever made," according to Samberg. Seeing as how rumor has it that Andy Samberg is leaving SNL along with Kristen Wiig (and maybe Jason Sudeikis), I won’t harp as much as I would like to about the missed opportunity for a Raven-Symone cameo. It’s just that Samberg deserves the best, and that…that would have been the best. Other than that, Lazy Sunday 2 was the perfect way to round out the almost seven years since Chronicles of Narnia (Lazy Sunday) first aired. Chris Parnell‘s rage face, a shout out to sage butter, the lines “Sneak in a flask filled with sweet vermouth / We take more shots in the theater than John Wilkes Booth.” You know what…I take it back. This thing was still pretty Raven. It was the perfect amount of Raven, in fact.

Are you still crying? Or, at the very least, do you still have "Ruby Tuesday" stuck in your head? It's Ok to admit these things. I mean, look, the 37th season finale of "SNL" was a fairly sub-par show, but it included one of the greatest moments -- Wiig's send-off-- that the show has ever produced. Though, there are still those lingering questions about about Jason Sudeikis' future, which we'll take a deeper look at, too.
But, if there were any doubt who won this week's Relevancy Poll...
(Note: On Tuesday, we'll be publishing the all encompassing, in-depth, full season Relevancy Poll -- so today's offering, other than a few main points, will be kept to a minimum.)
1. Kristen Wiig (Last Week: 5) No matter what you thought of Wiig's eccentric characters, with her departure, "SNL" will look drastically different when it returns this fall. Wiig had a remarkable run and she will be missed.

Kristen Wiig on SNL's Season Finale

There are many different ways to leave "Saturday Night Live." Some castmembers get dumped after a few episodes and are never heard from again and others have long, productive runs and graduate to movies. But most just kind of disappear and are replaced by someone younger, prettier, more versatile or just newer when the next season rolls around.
Kristen Wiig was never a typical "SNL"er. On a show that has minted a galaxy of stars, Wiig always had a little something extra, and when it came time for her final curtain call you could tell.
