For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the horror-comedy sitcom “Holliston,” which aired for two seasons on the now-defunct FEARnet in 2012 and 2013.
Adam Green and Joe Lynch are two filmmakers and genuine horror fans who have given their fellow horror fans so much over the years, including some great movies like Mayhem, the Hatchet franchise, and Frozen, as well as the upcoming Suitable Flesh. Among their many contributions to the genre was their horror sitcom, “Holliston.”
The best way to describe the series for the uninitiated would be if “Spaced” had a head on collision with “Friends” and was re-attached into a weird, funny monster. Originally premiering as the first original series on the now defunct FEARnet in 2012, “Holliston” is set in the small town of Holliston, Massachusetts, and stars Adam Green as “Adam” and Joe Lynch as “Joe.” Both stars play fictional versions of themselves that are best friends and roommates.

Ahead of Horror Channel’s UK TV premiere of Adam Green’s Victor Crowley, the great director shares his personal tragedies, George Romero’s inspirational words, the importance of genre comedy and hints that the Bayou Butcher may rise again…
Adam, you’re back on the UK’s Horror Channel this Friday night with your latest ‘Hatchet’ instalment Victor Crowley. Excited?
I’m always thrilled to hear that another one of my films will be playing on the UK’s Horror Channel! It’s crazy to think that the Us hasn’t had a horror specific television channel in 6 years now, only horror themed subscription platforms like Shudder. Then again- look at the real life horror we’re dealing with here as far as our current President goes. Clearly our country has made far worse decisions than doing away with our horror television network.
You’ve called Victor Crowley your most personal movie ever.

With a decade of monumental horror coming to an end, we pay homage to the genre's recent past by looking back at the horror releases of 2012 on a new episode of Corpse Club!
It was the year when "Gangnam Style" took YouTube by storm, when the Twilight film series came to an end and The Hunger Games began on the big screen. It was the year when Bane set out to break Batman’s back and Gotham's spirit. 2012 was a year of many things, including another year of great horror.
Continuing our retrospective series on the 2010s, Scott Drebit, Tamika Jones, Derek Anderson, and Jonathan James take a look back at the memorable horror releases of 2012, including the introduction of Bughuul in Sinister, the return of Alice (and other familiar faces) in Resident Evil: Retribution, the haunting feature film debut of Richard Bates Jr., the divisive Alien prequel Prometheus, and...

Filmmaker Joe Lynch recently enjoyed a well-received world premiere of his new movie Mayhem (read Heather's review here) at the SXSW Film Festival, and true to form, the Holliston co-star is showing no signs of slowing down, as he's now set to direct the horror film Taste from a screenplay by David Cohen, the screenwriter behind 2012's No One Lives.
Deadline reports the news of Lynch taking the directing reins on Taste, which will be produced by Erin Eggers, Chase Hudson and Matthew Porter of Penchant Entertainment, with Cohen on board to produce as well.
Filming on Taste is slated to start in Los Angeles this summer with a food-centric (and potentially cannibalistic) plot (via Deadline):
"When a young chef-on-the-rise is invited to cook for a revered master’s private supper club, what at first seems like a career-launching opportunity soon turns deadly with the discovery that she and...

Her delectable desserts have honored Hellraiser’s Cenobites and paid tribute to Elm Street's dream stalker, and artist Janine Lister's latest creepy creation celebrates another formidable force in the horror genre: filmmaker Adam Green.
Featuring characters and settings from the worlds of one of her favorite filmmakers, this incredible Adam Green cake was conceived when Janine wanted to design a dessert that would encompass multiple horror projects that were all created by the same person.
Being a passionate fan of Kane Hodder, Janine watched the horror icon play Victor Crowley in Green's Hatchet movies, which led her to seek out more of the director's projects, including Frozen, Digging Up the Marrow, the horror anthology Chillerama, and the Holliston series, all of which are represented on her cake:

One of cinema’s most vengeful creatures could be coming back to the big screen, as a Pumpkinhead reboot is currently in the works and could start filming as early as next year.
EW reports that Peter Block, executive producer of the Saw films, Holliston, Frozen, John Carpenter’s The Ward, and numerous other horror movies, has purchased the rights to the Pumpkinhead franchise that kicked off in 1988 with Stan Winston’s directorial debut and continued in three sequels (the latest one being 2007’s TV movie Pumpkinhead: Blood Feud).
Along with writer Nate Atkins, Block has put together a screenplay for a Pumpkinhead reboot (at this time titled Pumpkinhead) that has the same spirit of the first film without being a shot-for-shot remake. Block is currently searching for the right director to helm the reboot, and he’d like to begin filming in early 2017.

The problem with found footage movies is sometimes, instead of pulling the audience closer into the action, we end up thinking that the person behind the camera is just an idiot who should have dropped it and run for his life when things got dangerous. However their are rare occassions where you can just enjoy being taken along for the ride… As is the case with Digging Up the Marrow.
Playing himself Adam Green films a documentary about a man, William Dekker (Ray Wise) who contacts him promising proof of the existence of monsters in the world. Taking Will Barratt along with him as camera man he interviews Dekker about the claims, agreeing to investigate the claims.

Part documentary, part narrative, there are no easy labels for writer/director Adam Green’s latest movie, Digging Up the Marrow. On one hand, it features Green and a number of his regular collaborators playing themselves. At the same time, it stars Ray Wise as a Dr. Loomis-esque obsessive on the hunt for real-life monsters. It’s told as a straightforward documentary, but it also features cool-looking monsters designed by artist Alex Pardee (whose artwork served as the inspiration for the film). The pieces might be recognizable in and of themselves, but put together they make Digging Up the Marrow a movie that doesn’t quite feel like anything else out there.
It’s difficult to describe the premise of Marrow without giving too much away, and this is the kind of film where it’s better to go in cold. Suffice it to say that Green plays himself, a...

Since bursting on the scene with the throwback slasher Hatchet in 2006, writer/director Adam Green has built a career on doing this his own way. He has written and directed multiple features, produced films for up-and-coming filmmakers, created, written and starred on two seasons of his own sitcom Holliston, co-hosted The Movie Crypt, his own successful weekly filmmaking podcast and much, much more.
Digging Up the Marrow, Green's latest feature, is something totally different: a blend of documentary and narrative that defies any easy categorization. In the film, Green plays himself, a horror movie director with his own independent production company (ArieScope) who is contacted by a man named Decker (Ray Wise, the best he's ever been) claiming that monsters are real and that he knows exactly where to find them -- at an entrance to an underground world he calls "the Marrow."

After traversing the indie-horror scene for years, Adam Green still manages to bring an admirable level of excitement and enthusiasm to projects that might otherwise be dubbed “generic” without proper ambitions. Digging Up The Marrow could have suffered a more mundane fate in the wrong hands, but Green’s nurturing touch encourages individuality and creativity – or in more horror specific terms, it spreads like a devilish infection, eating deep into your mushiest cranial tissue.
Green’s found footage mockumentary analyzes man’s ability to rationalize the existence of monsters living among us, and he does so with the help of creature-artist-extraordinaire Alex Pardee – an illustrator whose work inspired a whole gaggle of heavily-detailed monsters ready to unleash themselves on excitable audiences. Green’s child-like enthusiasm is infectious as he seeks to answer questions many of us might be afraid of, but the documentary aspect eventually gives way to Pardee’s colorful,...

Five years after it first premiered at Sundance and was quietly released into a handful of theaters, Adam Green’s Frozen might still be his best film. It’s certainly his most accessible: unlike the goopy splatterfests that are his Hatchet movies or the brooding psychodrama of Spiral — all of which are great in their respective ways — the terrors of Frozen are universal. It’s the kind of movie that speaks to everyone in the audience: What Would You Do If…?
The premise is brilliant simplicity: three friends — couple Dan (Kevin Zegers) and Parker (Emma Bell) and third wheel Joe Lynch (Shawn Ashmore, playing a character named after Green’s real-life best friend and fellow director) — find themselves stranded on a ski lift in freezing temperatures with no rescue in sight for at least five days.
That description barely scratches the surface of what Green has in store, as his...

So, this one has me frothing at the mouth.

Austin - "Everly" puts me in an uncomfortable position. Sure, nowhere near as uncomfortable as the circumstances faced by Everly (Salma Hayek) over the course of the film, a one-room action movie, but as a film critic, I find myself really wrestling with my reaction. On the one hand, I like the energy of the film, and I think Hayek is about as appealing a lead as she's been in a while as the film opens in media hell, with her as a sex slave who finds herself at a turning point, freedom in her sights, but with a whole wall of mayhem between her and escape. The film makes a lot out of its single location, and I'm a fan of films where you watch one space get more and more destroyed over the course of an evening. Director Joe Lynch directs the film like a hungry man chasing a ham sandwich,...

In life there are ‘certainties’ and then there are ‘near certainties.’ Whilst the former might be represented by the rising and setting of the sun, the latter is most fittingly represented by Adam Green’s on and off the screen FrightFest attendance record. With a slight sense of amazement he reflected, “Every movie I have ever made has played here… every single one… its crazy.” In 2014 the trend is set to continue as the lights fade in the Discovery Screen 1 on Saturday evening for Digging up the Marrow!
So as Green prepares for his eighth FrightFest in nine years [abstaining from FrightFest 2012 not by free will and with an amusing story to the value of $75,000 to follow] he took us behind the story of one filmmaker and one festival.
There’s no better place to start than at the beginning, so how did your FrightFest journey begin?
Hatchet had world premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, and whilst it did great, Tribeca is not a genre festival.

John Schneider has done it all. He's found success in television, music and film. Most recently he decided to try his hand at something he's always loved: horror movies. With his new film Smothered being released soon, Schneider sat down with us to talk a bit more about the project.
As John Schneider isn't a name we normally associate with the horror genre, the writer and director of Smothered explained what led him to make the movie. "I've always been a horror fan," Schneider said.
"My mother used to subscribe to some magazine I remember seeing when I was a kid that had Frankenstein on the cover," he said of his early influences. "And when I was growing up in New York, there was a thing called 'Chiller Theater' and I'd watch that every week. I can still see the hand and the 'Chiiiillller' thing. So I've always been a fan.

I don’t have the world’s greatest relationship with Holliston. I remember reading about it, prior to the airing of season one, and being excited. Then I remember the disappointment I experienced when finally having the ability to watch it, seeing as Fearnet has a pretty limited reach, as far as availability goes. All of the elements were there, but it just didn’t click with me. One of the main problems I had, was that for the type of show that it was, it was way too long. Shows that feature the sitcom format should never go on for any longer than thirty minutes. By the forty minute mark, the novelty has worn off, and some viewers are beyond ready for the episode to end. That’s not to say that there wasn’t some entertaining moments, it’s just that whatever momentum it created, was ruined by the excessively long running time.

In addition to being Oderus Urungus, the frontman for the groundbreaking metal band Gwar for over three decades, Dave Brockie (as Oderus) starred in Adam Green's sitcom "Holliston." Green had some words about his co-star and friend he wanted to share.
If you are a fan of Brockie's work in Gwar or "Holliston" or his outrageous interviews, do yourself a favor and read Adam Green's blog entry on his friend Dave Brockie. It's a truly heartfelt and touching tribute.
Green wrote this entry because, as he put it, "I want to tell as many people as possible who the great man behind that costume really was."

By now I'm sure you've heard the devastating news concerning the passing of Dave Brockie – best known to horror and music fans as Oderus Urungus, founder and famously outrageous vocalist for the legendary metal monsters known as Gwar, and regular on the Fearnet original series Holliston. While this tragedy undoubtedly marks the end of the band's three-decade history, their manager has come forward to announce that this year's fifth annual Gwar-B-q – the band's notoriously crazed summer festival – will go on as scheduled, but will feature a tribute to Brockie's memory, scheduled for Friday, August 15th (the day before the show itself). Details of that ceremony have not been disclosed as of this writing. “On behalf of Dave Brockie's family, Slave Pit Inc. and Gwar, we would like to thank all the loyal fans worldwide for the outpouring of love and support shown to us over the past few days,...

All of us at Fearnet were deeply saddened when we learned of Dave Brockie's passing yesterday. The founder of horror band Gwar, Brockie was probably best known by his alter ego, Oderus Urungus. Oderus was an integral part of Fearnet's original series, Holliston.
In honor of Dave / Oderus, Fearnet will be airing a 24-hour Holliston marathon, beginning at 6am on Wednesday March 26th. You can find Fearnet on your cable network here.

The world lost an amazing person today. Some truly shocking and tragic news is coming out of Virginia as Gwar frontman Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus) has passed on at the all too early age of just 50 years old.
According to MSN, officers were called to Brockie's home Sunday evening (March 23rd) and found the singer dead inside, Richmond police spokeswoman Dionne Waugh said Monday. Detectives don't suspect foul play at this time, and the medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death, Waugh said.
The band, founded in 1984, is best known for its members' high-profile costumes and stage theatrics, but beneath it all they had a strong message and were anything but shy in terms of getting it out there and shouting it from the hilltops. Brockie was also a staple of the Adam Green and Joe Lynch show for FEARnet, "Holliston," in which Brockie as Oderus played Adam's friend and confidante.
