I found myself rooting for these folks to die and I just wanted it to end!
planktonrules17 May 2014
A huge trend in low-budget films over the last few years have been the so-called 'found footage' movies. In other words, the participants in some horrible massacre, ghostly apparitions or alien invasion supposedly used a home video camera and the film you see is that actual footage. In the case of The Blair Witch Project, a tiny indie brought in many, many millions of dollars. However, by now, 15 years later, the idea no longer seems very innovative…in fact, it's become a bit of a cliché. While some newer found footage films manage to overcome this and still entertain (such as "Alien Abduction"), a lot of it is just crap…and "sxtape" is just crap.

There are two huge problems with this film. First, despite the title, there isn't that much skin in this film. Instead, they talk about sex a lot and when the characters supposedly are having sex, you don't see anything. So, for someone just wanting a cheap thrill, there just aren't very many. Second, and this is by far the biggest problem, the characters are utterly hateful and I was annoyed every second they were in the film. And, considering they are in just about every frame, it made watching this movie a real chore.

Adam is supposedly filming everything in this, so all you get from him is his voice. He's a weak-willed guy who seems to do whatever his nutty girlfriend, Jill, suggests. She is a super-annoying young lady who seems completely absorbed by herself. The dialog between them is among the worst I can recall in a film—and they have zero depth to their relationship. They just cuss, talk about sex and she does whatever she feels like doing—exposing herself to others, shoplifting or breaking into an old abandoned hospital. And, the hospital break-in consists of most of the film. Jill and Adam decide to sneak into the place and make a sex tape. However, mostly they just rummage through the old building where it appears as if no one has been there in decades—yet, inexplicably, the lights still sometimes work and the water is also working (huh?!). Later, after one foray into this creepy place, they bring a couple equally annoying friends and they run amok in this place. There isn't a lot of suspense, however, as when the film began, you learned about their fate.

The bottom line is that having ANYONE occupy this much footage on a found footage style film is tough because the viewer will most likely tire of their antics. But, when you make the people THIS annoying and banal, then it's practically impossible to enjoy the film or recommend it to anyone. Overall, it's a film lacking originality and horror that is instead just a horror to try to watch.

Missing More Than The E
paul-day-clone8 May 2016
I should have known this would be miserable. And it was. The clue was the pretentious missing E but I actress was kind of hot and...well...I'm an idiot.

Jill and Adam live in the stereotypical "art space" that their parents probably pay for. They have a lot of sex and talk about "art". That's the extent of their relationship and about the only part of the movie that works. Adam finds an abandoned hospital and shows it to Jill. OOH! They can use it an an ART SPACE!. If you can get past the ridiculousness of this you have more tolerance than I.

They wander around making plans. Jill, in a clue to how much thought she put into her art, says she can just sign the garbage lying around and that's art. They find a room with a strap-down table. Adam straps Jill down and leaves her there for...well, we don't know how long, and she's assaulted by some spirit. Adam come back. They have sex until Jill's nose literally bleeds. Good job, Adam! They get freaked out, leave the building and...ruh-roh! - her car's getting towed away! Of all the BAD LUCK. They call for a ride from a friend who shows up with her dickish boyfriend.

And decide to go back in the building because it worked out so well the first time.

An hour later, the movie ends.

If you like movies where the characters actively work against their own self- interests simply because of the script and lack any kind of logic at all (the water, power and video equipment in hospital all still work) then you'll love this. If, however, you need even a hint of reality to your suspense, don't waste your time.

Not good
begob1 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This starts really well. You're presented with the mystery of three dead people as the police question the survivor.

The survivor is a ditsy artist, who is filmed by her boyfriend as events lead up to the killings. It's all hand-held camera from his POV, and the characters are well drawn by the actors.

Another promising thing is that there's some very good art on show, suggesting another way of seeing what's about to happen. Plus there's a good erotic element.

So the couple enter an abandoned hospital to scout out a location for her exhibition, and there's a great jump scare at about the half hour mark.

After that it slowly goes badly wrong. Another couple is introduced, and you soon get the feeling that the storytellers were stuck for a way of advancing the plot. The rest of the film is random running around corridors, entering dark rooms, getting glimpses of unscary creatures in hospital gowns, and it just feels like the director and writer lost the plot. The tension drains away and you end up clock watching.

I'd even question whether this is a horror, because it mostly feels like an exaggerated version of how a manic artistic personality went mad. The point of a horror movie is to make the metaphor literal, and the ghosts in this story don't succeed in that.

If you hang on to the end credits you'll get two gratuitous sex scenes that have at most a faint relevance to the story.

It's worth a look, but the epic fail of the storytelling is unforgivable.

Too little happens too late, annoying characters
victoryismineblast19 May 2014
A young couple embark on a road trip to an abandoned hospital with the man filming everything along the way. The woman is a painter and the idea is to scope out the hospital to hold an art show there at a later time.

When their car is towed, they call a couple of friends to pick them up, but plans change and they all re-enter the building. This is when bad things start happening as supernatural forces begin to manifest.

The characters are so annoying and their decisions either do not make sense or just plain drive you crazy. Too little happens too late and what does happen is not very interesting. If there were more supernatural goings on and the characters were more likable I think I would have enjoyed this a lot more.

Pathetic
bmcclure-5698718 May 2015
This is the first film I've watched in a long time that I kept checking the run time to see when it would finish. The only reason I watched it all the way through was because I'd spent so long watching it and waiting for it to get better, I thought I might as well see it through to the end.

The lead female character, Jill, is incredibly annoying she literally says nothing of any meaning throughout the entire film - just nonsense and clichés like at one point while driving pretty aimlessly around Los Angeles, she says, "This is where all the stars go to die.".

Apparently, her boyfriend (behind the camera) is an 'artist' and he's doing an 'art project' which basically involves filming Jill acting dumb and being totally 'edgy'... Her idea of edgy being stuff that we've all seen before (and probably done before too).

It's a boring film. If you're looking for something similar, but better, watch Grave Encounters, or even Grave Encounters 2 - both are extremely similar in location and theme and, although they were also filmed on a low budget, they're far superior to this nonsense.

I've given it a 3 out of 10 because the acting isn't the worst I've seen, it's just a bad script, annoying characters and a dodgy plot.

The real deal
b-bollinski26 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Lets start that I have watched dozen of these movies already and that this one really isn't that good. By using "isn't really that good" I mean super bad. I looked the movie up on this site and only because of one review I wanted to see it.

Now the beginning is actually the best of the whole movie. I liked it, even though there were only two main characters. The girl is crazy. All you need to know. The guy I think, likes to have sex with her (we saw that multiple times in the movie) and I guess that is the reason why he has a relationship with her IMO.

Now the storyline is pretty simple. Abandoned place with running water and electricity. Tons of rooms who are filled with "creepy" crap. When they go in, they girl flips. they go out, calls a friendly couple and they go back in. Sounds logical to me (not). From that moment the movie sucks. The guy from the couple that has been called is a huge douche who thinks he's a bad ass (carries a gun etc..) . Now This particular moment in the movie blows my mind => the crazy girl has sex with the douche in one of the rooms and gets busted by his girlfriend and then he has sex with her too (trio-style). Now, if that wasn't weird enough, the crazy girl (main character) plays with the douches gun while she gets "filled" and shot him on purpose and thereafter his girlfriend. Because (f-word) logic, that's why.

And that's is it. ow yeah she also shoots her boyfriend while saying to each other: I love you baby. Tadaaa written by a 6 year old who liked sex.

If you hope to see a horror movie, don't watch it. if you hope to see some soft porn, watch it. if you hope to see a ghost, you will: I think two or three times you see a pregnant woman (woohoo!) The end was unsatisfying. You hope they die because of the simple reason they don't make any sense. Whenever I watch a movie like this. I want to believe that when I am in that situation i would or could do that. Not even once in this movie.

I gave it a 1, I would have given it a zero but IMDb doesn't allow it.

(P.S.: every review about this movie that says Grave encounters AIN'T or MIGHT be better, stop reading the review)

I really enjoyed it!
Patient44417 May 2014
I see the reviews are harsh, I won't be the one to break the ice on a quite good one, in order to attract attention or mislead people, but for someone who never was into found footage movies, I got to say this one kept me still, watching, waiting for more.

It starts slow, some nudity, some jokes and builds up to the key point in around 20 minute. From there on, it grows more and more and starts to deliver. Sure, nothing mind blowing, but considering the fact that zombie movies and found footage are spreading like a virus lately, once you do find a good one, it's good to get things straight. In my honest opinion, SxTape is a good example and here are the reasons: 1) acting was good; 2) characters were typical and natural; 3) once the tension makes an appearance it stays there; 4) one or two good scares (let's face it, found footage can't really be scary anymore;) 5) the twisted situation involved.

So all in all, I would recommend this one, if you don't expect too much out of it, it will be OK. Somehow of a "Grave encounters", maybe better, dunno exactly. Anyway, if you do go in for it, enjoy!

Cheers!

What A Load Of Rubbish
omni_sik29 June 2014
O.K before anyone else thinks about renting/watching this movie a word of advice there are plenty of decent movies to rent better than this pile of hot steaming mess...

o.k lets break this down for what it is one of the WORST found footage movies ever made.

stupid plot, retarded lead female actor and one of the dumbest ending i have ever seen..

for the 1 hour and 24 mins this movie runs for there is plenty of better things to do or see.

whoever wrote the story must have been sniffing paint thinner or some heavy duty solvents because the story is so stupid.

any reviews that say this film is good are utter nonsense this is one of the most boring, dumbest films ever.

would give it a 0 if i could.

Don't WATCH THIS TRUST ME ITS THAT BAD.

Another Found Footage Disappointment
Poptart_Psycho4 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I have mentioned in my other reviews that found footage isn't my favourite in the horror genre only a few I liked, but I feel this one is too cliché and predictable. It flows of many other similar style films.

Saying that is does have a few good things going for it, the lead actress is very attractive and the couple had a very wild side which maybe could of been explored more? Its only when 2 new characters were brought in the first half hour was okay.

So the plot.., We start of seeing a woman being interviewed by detectives explaining her partner has died, then it shows Los Angeles artist Jill having her life videoed by partner Alex, the couple have a very sexual manor and nothing is too extreme. Alx tells Jill he has the perfect place for an artshow, an old institute for bad women. Wanting to look inside Jill goes in and find some disturbing things. Regardless of what they found Jill straps herself to a gurney and Alex insists on making a sex tape... After jokingly leaving her for a few minutes it turns to disaster an angry ghost unknowingly takes over her.

This is when the movie goes downhill... the couple leave after being shaken up but bump into friends Bobby (a flirty womaniser who wants Jill) and his partner Ellie. The film turns into more macho trying to get Jills attention ignoring the fact shes possessed.

The ending isn't so bad I wont give that away but I guess that makes the movie somewhat redeemable

Please stop finding these "found footage" movies
jfost756 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I ran across this movie on one of those Amazon Prime deep dives, first red flag, those never work out.

What I got was a paint by numbers FF horror flick that offered nothing by way of plot or originality.

This movie is about two 20-something whites kids who decide to poke about in an abandoned hospital l, with the occasional break to fill them having sex.

My best interpretation is that the gf gets possessed by the crazy horny ghost girl after she is left strapped fo a bed for and indeterminate length of time.

They escape the hospital, just to immediately go back in when their friends arrive to give them a ride.

Blah blah blah, possessed gf has sex with her friends bf, engages in a little theeesome action then goes on murder spree until the final smash cut to her ripping off some guys unit in a bj gone horribly, HORRIBLY wrong!!!

This movie was a waste of my life, don't let it waste yours!!

Really good. No clue why the rating is so low
bl-telfair20 May 2014
I love any and all things horror and found footage stuff is always worth a look for me. Since this was free to watch (look around), I figured I would do one of those 10 minute run throughs. Watch the first scene, fast forward looking for good parts, back up if I hit one, and then watch the ending. I ended up watching the whole damn thing. Quite liked it. It's no Grave Encounters, but it's worth a watch for sure. 9 times out of 10, if the IMDb reviews suck..they're usually spot on. Completely disagree here. Some of the bad reviews seem to be from people who don't even like found footage in the first place. Not sure why they posted here. I'd definitely recommend it though. Good stuff. Rate it 8/10 on a horror movie scale.

Pretty girl, nasty people
TdSmth526 October 2014
A girl is interviewed by the police. He mentions a tape, that her boyfriend is dead and that two others are missing.

And now we get to see the tape. Basically a guy films his girlfriend at all times. She's a painter, free spirit, fun-loving, wild and very cute. We follow them one day as they mess around, go to a coffee shop, into a store, then drive around as he shows her a place that could be used for a fancy art exhibition of her work. The place is an abandoned hospital. She of course rushes in through the fence and goes inside. He's reluctant but joins her. And of course everything seems fascinating to her. Incubators, children's toys, old beds. She gets on one and he restrains her. Then he leaves here there for a good while. A ghost appears and enters into her of sorts. At some point she starts bleeding profusely out of her nose. As they leave, he car is being towed so she calls a friend. A couple arrives. They of course wants to see the place. So even though the girl was freaking out earlier now she goes back in. They start tagging the walls. This new guy is a complete jerk and a bully. He even has a gun with him and gets very touchy with the girl even though his girlfriend is right there. They separate, run into each other again. Our first couple meets up, discovers the archive room and she finds some tape and a file and starts bleeding again. Meanwhile camera guy finds a room with cameras and sees what actually happened to the other couple and why they are missing. But his girl flips out once again. At the end we get some more background story of the place and its patients.

sxtape has one big advantage over all other crappy found footage tapes. It's centers on an attractive girl. If you are going to make a lame POV movie, that's what you want, your camera on a pretty girl occasionally in erotic situations. And this movie for the first half hour is fun and entertaining. But from there it goes downhill when the other couple arrives an we get nothing but abusive and obnoxious behavior. While the background of the hospital and the patients is interesting enough the movie unfortunately settles for psychological terror, which is never particularly scary let along interesting. A decent effort to rehabilitate the dreadful POV horror subgenre that doesn't go far enough.

A Perverts Excuse to Make a Pathetic Horror/Porn "Movie"
soulcrisis2821 October 2021
I'm not even half way through this flaming pile of garbage filler and I'm done. The bf, who stays behind the camera and delivers half the lines in the movie, is above and beyond annoying and his girly little prepubic voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

The gf is an airhead, cute but dumb as a box of rocks. I have no idea what stupidity is left in this movie but I'm sure it's not worth commenting on. I'll just be waiting and rooting for these two and anyone else in sure that pops up to die. If only this was a snuff film and it was for real.

Another Found Footage Movie
JoeB13130 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So this movie is about a wannabe artist who wants to be a video star, and her boyfriend films her when they have the brilliant idea to break into an abandoned mental hospital, because nothing bad ever happens there.

We are treated to the tired Found Footage Tropes of horrible things happening, but the characters just can't stop filming or putting down their cameras and just running away.

It has some nudity and dull as dishwater sex scenes, but the rest is pretty predictable and makes you want them to put a 10 year moratorium ban on Found Footage and Zombie Films.

Really Brandon? No clue why the rating is so low? Let me tell ya.
mallyrain30 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Here's why. The movie is a repeating pattern of done-to-death clichés. You like it, it probably means it's your first FF experience. Congrats. You have no clue why other people hate it - well, again, it probably means it's one of ten movies you have ever seen and this one was the best. No shame in lack of experience though, I guess.

Enough of the cruelty. The movie stinks - of boredom, nonsense and drivel. If this was the very first FF movie ever made, then maybe it would have stood the test of time, but this being 2013, well it's a no go to anyone that admired the first Blair Witch Project or The Last Broadcast. This one here, ladies and gentlemen, is a failed student project. But the blonde chick was kinda hot. Crazy, but hot.

Like Grave Encounters if nothing happened
wormsoftheerth23 July 2014
So my girlfriend and I decided to give this one a shot because we are fans of found footage horror movies and really liked the Grave Encounters movies. We didn't expect too much from this movie, and that's about what we got. To sum up sxtape quickly, just imagine Grave Encounters...now remove all the parts where stuff actually happens, and you have this movie. Firstly, having only 2 characters for the bulk of the film really limits what can happen, especially when the story and dialog are as horrendous as they are here. The characters are not developed whatsoever and I feel like they act in completely random ways during the events of the movie and I don't get any kind of definition as to their character or personalities. The setting itself is great, but highly underutilized. Once again, we have yet another movie in an abandoned place where the director expects the location to carry the movie and make it "creepy" and "unsettling" by default without adding further elements to conjure those moods. So, we're left with a movie that mainly involves two people walking around in an asylum (that was performing lobotomies in 1982 apparently! to hell with sense. oh and the water and power still works. suuuure) and talking about random stuff (sometimes sex, sometimes "this is weird we should leave...but let's stay for some reason"). I didn't get the feeling that there was anything beyond a very loose story arc for this movie (there is going to be a boring intro, a "creepy" overly drawn out mid section, and a brief & very predictable climax). There was some stuff that happened, but there was no particular purpose behind any of it and none lead to any significant developments. One huge flaw I found with the movie is that any time a scene starts to pick up - you hear something in the distance, ominous music starts to play, some ghostly voices echo in the background, the cameraman starts to run...OK this is about to get good...and then, bizarrely, the camera shuts off and comes back on a second later in a different location where nothing is happening and nothing became of whatever situation was about to go down. This completely kills the mood. I have no idea why this "technique" was used over and over throughout the film but it made it a chore to sit through, since any time you think something is about to happen you are jarringly let down. I think there is also a plot about ghosts or something, but it is never fleshed out, nor does it have much bearing on anything that happens other than to provide a boo scare or two.

Ultimately, this is just a bland attempt to follow in the footsteps of movies like Grave Encounters. Not the worst thing ever, though not particularly worth watching unless you absolutely must see every found footage horror movie out there.

Don't waste a minute on this tripe!
phrankee-804256 April 2023
It's not scary, not sexy and most definitely not good. If you've read other reviews you already know this is one of those "found footage" deals. Come to think of it, I'm no sure I've ever seen one of those I actually liked.

The "story" involves a totally annoying female lead whose voice and acting ability will make you consider offing yourself. And if your looking for cheap thrills, she's not the answer. Also, her bf Adam who is just a whiny annoying voice carrying a camera throughout the film

Watch this at your own risk, but seriously I can't say enough bad things about it...total waste of time. Probably the biggest giveaway was when annoying bimbo bottle blonde was in the hospital going through records and found a lobotomy that was performed on April 31, 1982. Director's joke: I doubt it. Just 1 more bit of stupidity from this waste of time flick.

You're A Good Girl!
wandernn1-81-6832744 April 2022
2013? How'd I miss this all these years????

What a great found footage movie!!!! It's got skin! It's got a very fun girl in it, at least in the first half. Then she kind of gets sorta not fun. You got the dumb boyfriend who never turns off the camera. I mean it is almost perfect. Well except the concept is of course way overused and all that, but geez it's a found footage film!!!

Oh and did I mention the girl is fun???? Oh and the very end, oh man that's gotta hurt. LOL 5/10.

Another twisted FF film
LiamBlackburn16 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The first half of the movie is pretty uneventful in terms of shocks or scares. It seems slow and pointless until you realize it serves to build up a complex dynamic between the two main characters. This film should be judged as a thriller not a shocker or paranormal. It's more about the characters than it is about the ghosts. Ultimately it seems like the ghost is somehow part of the main girl's psyche or something like that. There is definitely a connection to her being objectified by her video-taping boyfriend and the ghost etc. It's like the boarded-up institution is her inner-emotions and the ghost is the unleashing of them. She keeps wanting to go into this old abandoned mental institution but he doesn't want to. It's like he won't listen to her...But then she gets caught on cameras having sex with the other guy and the she shows her true demonic self anyway. Even in the end she shoots him and complains how he never listens to her.

The first time they leave the institution you actually see the ghost in a split-second screenshot as the camera turns around.

When you see the ghost later on in the movie it isn't that scary but it isn't cheesy either.

Considering this is a really low-budget movie, the acting is really good and it holds its own as a solid FF film....and the ending is cool. You just have to think deeper instead of only looking on the surface.

Pretty OK
batteredcakes26 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This actually wasn't a bad movie like what some reviews are saying. It's decent, has suspense, mostly good acting, and decent scares. I did get annoyed of the characters at some point. They were pretty realistic until somewhere in the middle where the characters were just starting to annoy and irritate me. Nice guy chases after (not nice word for chick who sleeps around) scenario to an obnoxious extent. Chick doesn't care, pushes him away for no reason all the time, sleeps with someone else while boyfriend is worried and looks for her then she whines for awhile throughout the movie..."someone needs to shoot her brains out soon" is all I could think about. The nice guy also gets annoying. Wants to leave, whines about wanting to leave, but doesn't and can't take no or leave me alone for an answer. So yes, it can get overly obnoxious towards the end from the middle but this was an entertaining movie with some decent acting and OK story. Watch it if you have nothing else really to watch. Just know, it doesn't live up to the other found footage films like Grave Encounters, Blair Witch Project or a couple of the Paranormal Activity movies.

Terrifying, Skillfully Directed, Honest & Underrated
walterradunsky18 May 2014
While SX_Tape is not one of the best written films directed by Bernard Rose, it is nonetheless wonderfully executed. As far as found-footage horror films go, this is the best and most terrifying one I've seen. I can only assume that the low ratings received for a film this well done and frightening has more than a little to do with the behavior of the films protagonists, which many critics found "hateful" and "annoying." One such user review is even a word-for-word copy of a review published in 1INFLUX Magazine. I'm guessing that the characters got so far under the critic's skin, he couldn't help but to discredit this film anyway he possibly could. But truly bad or mediocre films are not so provocative. The lead characters in SX_TAPE are in fact self-absorbed, careless, insensitively voyeuristic, sarcastic, and self-destructive; but so are a great deal of today's youth. While depicting a boyfriend choosing to film his girlfriend bleeding rather than turning off the camera and helping her is unpleasant, it is nevertheless an honest reflection of a society in which there have been so many instances of people using their cell phones to record videos of others in trouble instead of calling for help. Once again, Bernard Rose has held a mirror up to our faces, and many of the critics don't like what they see. And whereas critical reflections of society were once praised, in today's mob-ruled media, they are vehemently despised.

Ridiculously underrated

I didn't want to write a review about this flick but after I saw the ridiculous 3.9 rating I had to write something good about it. The first thing to say that almost the whole movie is filmed with a hand-held camera - like Blairwitch Project, REC, Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield etc. I've seen quite some flicks in this pseudo amateurish camera style and I have to say that this and REC are clearly the best I've seen so far. You may dislike the content and characters of this movie. You may even dislike the whole plot, story or setting BUT there are 3 things you cant ignore. First, the whole cinematography is really good. It begins with gimpses of the fun-loving, naive life of Jill and Adam which slowly transforms into a very intense psychological, nihilistic, surrealistic horror show. The atmospheric shots of the abandoned mansion environment are great. And last but not least - I really liked the performance of Caitlyn Folley as Jill. Don't get me wrong, this flick is not a mind blowing piece of art and you cant take such flicks too seriously. In the very last 2 seconds the movie makes that abundantly clear. This movie is a good, solid psychological horror shocker - nothing more, nothing less - and it should be rated accordingly. 7/10

Give it a try. It's a good ride.

Warning: Spoilers
With one of the film's final moments given away in the first few minutes, we find out that Jill's boyfriend Adam is dead. Adam is that vital ingredient of any found-footage project, a fanatical film-maker. He spends so much time behind the webcam that we only really see him at the close, with an impressively rendered hole in his head.

Jill is a carefree wild-child, an unsuccessful artist who feels that a show staged inside an abandoned hospital, The Vergerus Institute for Troubled Women would help give her the exposure she craves, in more ways than one. Not long after they (illegally) enter the hospital, the couple talk about filming a sex-tape with her strapped to a bed.

Momentarily abandoning her in that vulnerable position, Adam fails to realise that in his absence, she appears to have been entered by a malevolent spirit. From then on, her behaviour spills over from impetuousness into murderous intent and madness.

Sx_Tape is exceptionally well-played. Caitlyn Folley is terrific as the central character, persuasively and increasingly erratic. Her boyfriend Adam (Ian Duncan) is irritated by her behaviour, but goes along with her anyway. It isn't until they meet up with two friends Ellie and Bobby that her behaviour gets really cruel. Bobby (Chris Coy) is an objectionable bully – we don't know whether this is the influence of the spirits, or just an extension of his overbearing personality.

As the group unwisely re-enter the hospital, 'Sx Tape' becomes less focused and less interesting, relying on endless investigation of (admittedly creepy) rooms and wards, punctuated by sightings of the very unfrightening spirit. Things are lifted toward the end as we realise the extent to which Jill has been influenced by the spirit, and yet further by an implausible ending which is nevertheless painfully amusing.

Online reviews have been unnecessarily scathing of 'Sx_Tape', mainly because any sexual activity is not as graphic as some people would like. As a found-footage project, I was thoroughly entertained by this, mainly due to the actors.

My Review Of "SX_Tape"
ASouthernHorrorFan10 May 2014
Bernard Rose's "SX_Tape" is a paranormal, found footage film starring Caitlyn Folley, Julie Marcus, Ian Duncan, Daniel Faraldo, Diana García and Eric Neil Gutierrez. The story focuses on Adam and Jill, a young couple in the throws of a spicy, sexual relationship as it unfolds on camera. The course of the day, kinky sexcapades and subsequent horrors take shape in a blend of psychological thrills and nightmarish chills.

The story of "SX_Tape" isn't anything new or overtly original but it is well thought out and executed nicely. In an attempt to blend the sex tape phenom into the horror story, Eric Reese develops a pretty convincing concept with some actual eerie moments. There is one aspect that fails in "SX_Tape" that is an Achilles' heel in many of the found footage stories, the plausibility that a person will continue to maintain control over a camera or keep a strong composure in the face of such a horrific, life altering moment such as unfolds in this film. It is debatable and doesn't really kill a story, but when it becomes a question mark for a good third of the story, it slows down the chilling nature of a major component in the film's main gimmick. However "SX_Tape" still manages to fully present a thrilling concept with a edgy, darkness that is entertaining.

The acting in this film is believable, with most of the character driven drama hanging on one person, Jill, played by Caitlyn Folley. Her ability to emote on camera the elements of both happiness and terror is both chilling and captivating. In the beginning I felt she was more mentally challenged than I am sure she meant to portray in this free spirit, whimsical character but as the movie went on I found her really more convincing. Over all the film's intended vision stays present and creates a chilling nightmare. "Sex_Tape" holds it's own in the found footage, paranormal genre without being too cerebral or too mundane. The film offers a pleasant medium of drama, thrills and suspense.

"SX_Tape" offers up a nice blend of effects both in soundtrack and effects. The horror elements are at a minimum as far as the visceral components but with the creepy sound effects, sudden shock moments and constant pace toward the inevitable "SX_Tape" gives the thrills in expected places and some not so expected places. I jumped and cringed several times in the course of watching this film. Bernard Rose gives good chills, and is worth checking out by any fan of paranormal horror, especially for the fan of this ever-growing subgenre we call found footage.
