As the embodiment of kindness, generosity, and Yuletide beneficence, Santa Claus presents some mighty big black boots, much less a red suit, for any actor to fill. But jolly old Saint Nicholas has appeared in the movies for as long as the movies have existed, and here are some of our favorite actors who’ve steered the sleigh (not counting Billy Bob Thornton and anyone else who has played a guy who is pretending to be Santa):
Kurt Russell in “The Christmas Chronicles” (2018) and “The Christmas Chronicles 2” (2020): There’s more than a little bit of Russell’s trucker character from “Big Trouble in Little China” in his take on Father Christmas, but that blue-collar bravado and dad-bod energy make this character, in the words of critic Nathan Rabin, “a Santa who f–ks.”

Trouble in your neighborhood? Getting in fights? Mom getting scared? Whistle for a cabbie and head to the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” mansion, which has been made available as a nightly rental on Airbnb — and Will Smith is the host.
Ok, so only part of the crib (Will’s wing) is being made available and just across five nights — the whole thing is a stunt timed to the 30th anniversary of the classic TV sitcom. But still, the digs are dope for the five lucky temporary tenants. Plus, the Boys & Girls Club of Philadelphia (Smith’s hometown) is getting what we’re sure is a sizable donation from the home-rental website.
“Yoooo!! Y’all think we should rent out the @freshprince house??” Smith tweeted out on Sunday alongside a photo of him and DJ Jazzy Jeff in front of the L.A. home. “We’re making it happen with the squad at @airbnb!

The Banana was unpeeled on Wednesday’s “The Masked Singer” to reveal Poison frontman Bret Michaels was the celeb behind the mask. And though the episode aired tonight, it was shot months ago and Michaels, of course, had no way of knowing that it would be his last turn on the Fox singing competition — or that there would be a special, unintended significance behind his final song choice, “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.”
“This is the irony of my life, are you ready? Tonight, when that airs, will be the 10th anniversary of the survival of my brain hemorrhage,” Michaels told TheWrap Wednesday. “Me having no clue when these shows would air. And literally, 10 years ago, tonight, they were operating on my brain while this show airs.”

Scott Z. Burns, the screenwriter for Steven Soderbergh’s prescient 2011 thriller “Contagion,” has found a new protagonist: the coronavirus itself. In an “infect and tell” open letter to the United States to be published Saturday in Graydon Carter’s Air Mail, Burns imagines Covid-19’s first-person account of the pandemic that has shut down much of the world economy.
“To go back to the beginning, I was hanging out in a seafood market in Wuhan, China, late last year with this bat I knew when I decided it was time to get out and see the world,” Burns’ version of the virus writes. “Maybe there was a pangolin involved, maybe not. (I am not one to infect and tell.) But when I met my first human being, I knew I had found my dream home … Now I understand what Herpes was talking about all these years — you guys are everything...

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel-hosted “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” revival fell 45% in ratings on Wednesday from its week-ago debut, according to initial data from Nielsen. The show premiered to a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49 last week and settled for a 0.6 rating in that same demo last night.
Elsewhere, “The Masked Singer” was also down from its previous episode, airing a sing-along special with no contestant elimination, but the numbers put up by the competition series combined with the Season 1 finale of “Lego Masters” to lead Fox to a Wednesday win.
Over on NBC, Dick Wolf’s “Chicago” dramas ended their seasons strong, with “Chicago Fire” earning a series high in total viewers.

While Todd Robinson’s The Last Full Measure does center upon the cost of war, it’s neither a pro-war or anti-war film. He instead allows the idea of battle to exist as an imperative within Airman William H. Pitsenbarger, Jr.’s story. Not only did this young man enlist to go to Vietnam, his bravery led him to voluntarily exit his helicopter above the massacre of Operation Abilene in order to help a division of total strangers who just sent their only medic up for evacuation. Pits saved many men’s lives that day before waving the chopper off, taking up a gun, and doing what he could to save more. His heroic death deserved a posthumous Medal of Honor. What he received instead was the Air Force Cross.

Will Smith says he might owe his entire career to action movie director Michael Bay’s insistence that he take his shirt off in that one scene in the original “Bad Boys.”
The actor was on “The Tonight Show” to promote “Bad Boys For Life,” the third installment in the “Bad Boys” franchise that began in 1995, in which he stars opposite Martin Lawrence.
“So Michael Bay was shooting this scene, and I wanted to have my shirt on. And Michael was like, ‘Dude, I’m gonna make you a frickin’ movie star! Take your shirt off,'” Smith told Jimmy Fallon on Thursday. You can watch the original running-with-a-gun scene here.

Legends of Tomorrow technically returns on January 14th with the final part of “Crisis On Infinite Earths,” but after the defeat of the Anti-Monitor and the restoration of the multiverse, it’s back to business as usual for the crew of the Waverider, as seen in a series of photos from season 5’s opening episode.
“Meet the Legends” sees the misfit team having suddenly become famous to the excitement of everyone except Sara, and as a result, a documentary crew is invited to film them as they investigate a timeline issue. This turns out to be caused by Rasputin, one of the souls that Astra has begun releasing from hell after Constantine’s botched exorcism damned her and her time in perdition turned her evil.

It was a strange morning for the Director’s Guild of America (DGA) Monday, as the organization announced some — but not all — of the TV nominations for the 2020 DGA Awards.
A note included in the official nomination statement explained that the nods for the Comedy Series, Dramatic Series, and Variety/Talk/News/Sports — Specials categories will be announced on Friday, rather than today as scheduled, due to an error related to the organization’s newly implemented electronic entry submissions process. The categories in question require a re-vote, the DGA explained. Variety reported last week that the DGA sent members an email stating that “Transparent” creator Jill Soloway had been mistakenly omitted from the comedy series ballot for her direction of “Transparent Musicale Finale,” and advising members to recast their vote in the category if they so chose.

Wednesday wasn’t “Good Times” for Donald Trump, but it was an Ok night for ABC. The network’s “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” mixed with impeachment coverage and led the Disney-owned broadcaster to a third-place finish.
The “Good Times” and “All in the Family” re-creations faced some stiff competition in primetime, and this Jimmy Kimmel-Norman Lear effort was way down from the one last season, according to Nielsen.
Fox was No. 1 on the night with its “Masked Singer” Season 2 finale. CBS was runner-up with the conclusion of “Survivor” Season 39.

Although its characters get drunk all the time, “And Your Bird Can Sing” is as sober as it gets. Captured in the triviality of everyday life in northern Japan, Sho Miyake presents a lackluster love drama based on a novel by Yasushi Sato.
“And Your Bird Can Sing” is screening at Five Flavours Asian Film Festival
A nameless book dealer played by Tasuku Emoto (“Air Doll” 2009) falls in love with his coworker, Sachiko. His roommate, Shizuo, also has interest in her. Normally, a perfect base for conflict. But somehow Miyake misses to build up the tension. I don’t blame the actors. Shota Sometani (“Parasyte” 2014) as Shizuo and Shizuka Ishibashi (“Nights Tightrope” 2016) as Sachiko are doing their best. Natural acting, becoming one with the camera and creating harmony on screen. Unfortunately, this does not help the pace of the film, who fails to arouse the interest of the viewer.

Bosnian filmmaker Jasmila Zbanic’s upcoming drama about a family trapped in war-torn Srebrenica, Polish director Agnieszka Holland’s postwar film chronicling the rise and fall of a mysterious Czech healer, and Luxembourg helmer Jacques Molitor’s tale of a wealthy and bloodthirsty clan of wine-growing lycanthropes are among the projects taking part in this year’s Venice Gap-Financing Market.
The 6th edition of the market section, which runs during the Venice Film Festival from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1, presents 51 international projects in the final stages of development and funding, including 28 feature films and documentaries.
Among the projects selected for the market, part of the Venice Production Bridge program, is Zbanic’s tentatively titled European co-production “Quo Vadis Aida.” In the film, the director of the Golden Bear-winning “Grbavica” revisits the horrors of the Bosnian War in a story about a family trapped in Srebrenica during the city’s occupation by Serb forces.

Luke Mitchell with Jessica McNamee.
Luke Mitchell shot Andrew Traucki’s Black Water: Abyss, a survival thriller about five people who are attacked by killer crocodiles, in a purpose-built pool near Brisbane, but it was no picnic.
“The fear factor was real. There were tricky conditions as we were immersed in rising water in the dark with only our headlamps and torches for illumination,” the actor tells If after returning to his home in Los Angeles.
Mitchell readily accepted the role for several reasons. He wanted to “get my hands dirty” after playing Captain John Abraham in The Code, a military legal drama which screens on CBS All Access in the Us and here on 10 All Access.
It was his first ever genre film, it enabled him to come back to his native Queensland, and it was his first chance to work with Jessica McNamee.

The National were supposed to take a break. They sure as hell deserved one. After 20 years of tirelessly burnishing their reputation as the country’s most consistent rock band — after selling almost 1 million records, becoming President Obama’s de facto campaign soundtrack, and laying down the definitive rendition of “The Rains of Castamere” along the way — a little time off sounded like a good idea. The National had just released “Sleep Well Beast,” their emotionally fraught seventh album, and this traveling circus of middle-aged dads was just one quick massive world tour away from the breather they’d been chasing for so long. “Let’s just survive this” is how lead singer Matt Berninger sums up the group’s shared attitude at the time.
And then, on September 3, 2017, filmmaker Mike Mills sent Berninger the email that changed everything.
