Waste of time...
madogancay12 February 2024
Good director(Erdem Tepegoz), good scenarist(Erdi Isik), wonderfull cast(Funda Eryigit, Alperen Korkmaz, Mehmet Gunsur)...unfortunately the result is not satisfactory. The idea of the plot is interesting . But i think that the screenplay is written in a hurry.. needs elaboration and more toughts. On the other hand the characters are not well developed. They are unidimensional. The link with Anna Karenina is ridiculous . Laughed a lot at the final scene. We are not expecting art movies from Netflix but we still deserve better works. As i've mentioned earlier most of the latest contents of Netflix started to be below average.

Terrible
ahmetcemil11 February 2024
Everyhing in this low budget clishé movie is overused to the point of losing all meaning.

Made me want to cancel Netflix subscription.

This cliché romance cheating wife movie relies heavily on tired tropes and predictable plot twists, failing to offer any originality or depth. The characters are one-dimensional, the dialogue feels forced, and the emotional stakes are undermined by shallow storytelling. The portrayal of infidelity lacks nuance, reducing complex human relationships to superficial melodrama. Overall, it's a forgettable and uninspired addition to the genre, offering little substance or genuine insight into the complexities of love and betrayal.

A niche film for a target audience
MillennialO712 February 2024
This film would be perfect for someone I knew a few years ago...she was in her mid-40s, had an Instagram account, did that lip smacking thing probably because she thought it was sexy, and worst of all attended Drake concerts.

Target Audience:
  • Divorced, seperated, unhappily married
  • Over 35
  • Have an interest in romance novels
  • Enjoy cliche Turkish dramas

Sound like you?

Go click that play button!

(I'll be curious to read your review)

On a serious note, objectively aligning my mindset with the desired target audience the film does what it says on the tin. You don't watch Jason Statham movies (excluding London) for the stellar acting. You watch it because you know what to expect. On that note I'd give it a 4.

The production quality is excellent.

The lead actress did a good job.

Honestly, I'm a little baffled to the low reviews. Are we rating based on quality or our own subjective taste? If that's the case then I'd give those brilliant Pixar animations 2's all days long. Can't stand sitting through them blasted Animations with the kids, however, I recognise quality when I see it!

Not to get carried away, even in this niche this film isn't great but it certainly isn't awful.

Terrible, unrealistic movie 🤢
cankutb21 February 2024
Congratulations to those who made such a terrible, unrealistic movie. Mehmet Günsür will be in a terrible movie in his career, it's a pity. The movie makes you say that it's a pity for all the expenses and efforts, it's as worthless as ash like its name. The only good thing about it is the beautiful images of Istanbul. The cinematographer did a good job, but the cast, script and directing can be taught as a lesson on how to make a terrible movie in schools that teach cinema. If you want to torture yourself, it can be a nice torture tool, it is a sad that something like this comes out of this geography, Turkey, which has a lot of original stories to tell.

Oh Good, I'm One of The First to Watch This Garbage...
french-5531811 February 2024
As the first reviewer states, Netflix is a major player in the streaming movie game, and this is advertised as one of the "most watched" or "popular" movie. So me being me, I decided to tune in to see for myself why this movie is rated as "popular" by netflix. Man i tell you I wish I would have passed this mess of a movie up.

The acting is completely over-bearing and portrayed exactly like their drama coach would have advised. The over-acting blends well with the complete crappy music that drones on in the background. Most soap operas are done better than this, but I suspect they made and completed the film in less than a month as its release date is 2024.

If you decide to pass up this film feel good about it, because you are not missing much.

Gave 1 star because I can't give 0
d-lol_lol-b20 February 2024
Waste of time. The bazaar/farmers market scene was extremely bad. I felt like I was watching an indian film about indian slums. I am not looking down on them but it is not nice when a country (i think purposely) is represented in a very wrong way. Characters were shallow and acting was meh. Final scene felt like it was rushed. Anna Karenina was thrown in the script to make it look meaningful but it was ridiculus overall because it literally had no connection to any character. And scriptwriter or director - I don't know whose BRILLIANT idea was this but- made a "groundnreaking" plot twist by making another writer claim the book "Ashes" as his own falsely. Wow. Amazing. As usual from Netflix: There is a pretty woman, there is a hot guy and there are sex scenes. Anything else doesn't matter. A good story, good acting, good cinematography... those are irrelevant to netfix filmography. Shame on the Actors/Actresses for accepting to work on this garbage. No sense of career management...

Ay Yapim...
yusufpiskin9 February 2024
Streaming services have begun to attract independent/art-house cinema screenwriters and directors not only in Turkey but also in the world. And filmmakers welcome this offer because these services provide them with a freer and richer space.

Netflix, in particular, has dominated almost all awards in the world for the last 10 years.

And thanks to this, we watched many successful movies...

So, we can look at why this mathematics does not work in Turkey through this movie.

Director ; virtue overhead .... we know from art-house/independent works.

Most of the actors, writers, cinematographers... The cast is almost made up of such people.

So why wasn't this movie made? Because no matter who is in front of or behind the camera, the label on the movie is ay production and this movie is nothing more than a typical ay production series.

Unless the monopoly of the streaming company in Turkey is broken, there is no way we can watch Roma.

We have talented cinema workers and sufficient technical infrastructure...

As usual, there is no production company that comes from TV. Channel D, ATV series, where it is easier to make love, swear, alcohol and cigarettes are not censored = Turkish works on Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime etc.

Should have been consigned to ashes
geewhiz4612 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A married woman who spends most of her time in almost frontless dresses - finds a manuscript detailing the love affair of an unknown woman. It describes the town the street the building and a man - called M. Curiosity drives her to check out the description and she finds that it is an actual place and a real man that has been described.

Naturally she wants to know more about the man who is a carpenter called Ali - but goes by M - she inserts herself into life and commissions him to make a mirror for her shop.

She virtually forces him into having an affair.

Of course hubby gets suspicious and checks out who wrote the book. It turns out to be a woman who committed suicide.

For some incomprehensible reason an author claims the book is his.

I think that is this writers idea of a twist.

Totally idiotic and laughable.

There have been many good Turkish series - this is not one of them. It should come with a warning label - art house - do not enter.

a nice movie to spend some free time
seydaelmas13 February 2024
The movie begins like a romantic movie with a classic romantic story. Then, it turns into a psychological thriller by combining elements that keep the audience curious.

Some deficiencies in the story structure of the main characters are occasionally felt while watching the movie. At the same time, these deficiencies also affect the continuity of the story in some parts while watching the movie.

It has a storytelling style that can be enjoyed if not watched with high expectations, and the performance of the leading actors is quite good considering Turkish films. In addition, the film's overall scenario, storytelling and cinematography are quite well constructed when compared to films in the same category.

This Isn't It!
Raeleesun18 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I kept watching this movie even though, well the wife has quite a few screws loose. That's fine it's a movie but this is, dare I say...cringey. She behaves how a teenage girl who's never felt lust before would possibly behave as well as being very controlling. I didn't dislike everything about the movie. I did like the scenic scenes and thought they were all well done as well as the wardrobe choices for the actors and actresses.

I like where the movie was headed with the twist towards the end but the very end, ugh, well that ruined what good was left of this movie. Spoiler...Her friend saw who she was having an affair with and told her it wasn't appropriate. So her lover kills her husband in the husband and wife's home and she gets off without any issues from the police? They'd have to be pretty dumb or paid off. It was a hard watch and the end was even harder. Netflix has been picking movies that are genuinely not worth watching. Just sucks for someone who isn't a couch potato and wants to watch a good movie let down again and again.

'Ash', a Turkish movie
importgermany15 February 2024
Excellent novel of passion and suspense, photography, lighting, plot, setting.

Directed by Erdem Tepegöz and with the original title 'Kül', 'Ceniza is a dramatic film that introduces us to Gökçe (Funda Eryigit), a married and wealthy woman. His life changes irreversibly when he begins to read an unpublished novel. When he meets Metin Ali (Alperen Duymaz), a mysterious carpenter with whom he falls in love.

The intoxicating fantasy of the book you are reading will give way to a dangerous romance that will cause many conflicts.

Beyond the risqué scenes, which there are, the film gains interest when it leaves the purely romantic.

Don Quixote Meets Anna Karenina
lavatch4 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
There was some genuine creativity on the part of the filmmakers of "Ashes." The film combined romance and mystery in a baroque drama exploring the conflict of illusion and reality.

Gokce is the protagonist who reads and considers manuscripts for publication for her husband's firm. In the "Ashes" novel, she becomes enmeshed in a story that seem so realistic that she is drawn into the vortex, attempting to live out the realities of a work of fiction.

In turn, the audience is caught up in the illusionistic impact of the charismatic carpenter. There were intriguing references to "Don Quixote" and "Anna Karenina." The strong performances and intriguing settings added to the dramatic impact of this heady film.

Anything you watch could be better than this.
olcare15 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I'm watching the latest productions of Netflix Turkey, and every time I say, "this could be improved, that's missing," but this movie is beyond bad, beyond criticism.

First of all, the acting is terrible. It's like everyone's worst performance; I couldn't believe if I was watching the right actors. Mehmet Günsür tried hard, but he seemed like a victim of the screenplay. As for Funda Eryigit, it's her worst performance that I've seen. Everyone is overacting unnecessarily, and it just makes everything cringeworthy without adding anything meaningful.

The screenplay is incredibly bad. 'Someone read a book and thought it was real' could have been depicted much better. They handled the fantasy theme exactly how it shouldn't be handled; the fantasy elements felt artificial, clichéd, and didn't evoke any interest. And they used some effects in certain scenes, but those effects were terrible. I haven't seen worse editing; I'm sorry.

I don't want to blame or criticize the entire team individually, but is this what we get for this concept and this budget? Bad acting, simple single-shot scenes, effects that look like sand on the camera, terrible editing; can everything be this bad?

We should be able to do more than this, especially when we have quality actors and actresses. We should make the most of them before they age. A whole generation is wasted on mediocre scripts. I've written too much already; it's already a contender for the worst of the year.

I am not able to recognize the beautiful part of the city Balat
meliketuzlen-0965125 February 2024
In the movie, Türkiye and Turks are pictured as if they are Iranians, Araps or Afgans.

Balat is a very nice part of the city. In Balat you can find very modern coffees, chef's restaurants, beautiful scenery of Halic. It is not a place where you can buy spices, it is not a spice bazaar. It is very disgusting to show places and people in a way where the truth is not reflected.

The movie itself is also horrible. Characters are very superficial. A lonely rich woman, a rich and busy man, a wild and poor man. These are the prototypes and even a normal person can write such a text with these superficial characters. I wanted to rate it with a zero but it is not possible. Horrible.

What is the aim? What kind of movie?
muzaffergil25 February 2024
There is something I don't understand. What kind of movie is this and what purpose does it serve? If I want to watch a movie with sex content, I will open the movies that serve it and watch it. But to put more than 5 minutes of sex content in the movie for the first 20 minutes, which perversion is the work of which mentality, which I will watch for a story? We're tired of this ridiculous content. Shame on your time. Good players. Good shooting. Everything is good, money was spent. But who adds such ridiculous sex scenes to so much effort? Please anyone, I hope I don't meet in the next content I will watch.

No love, no mystery, no adventure. Nothing.
MovieandTheaterMaster27 February 2024
Scenario is meaningless. This was an attempt of a movie to quietly end Mehmet Günsur's cinema career. Who is responsible for selecting the films for Netflix Turkey? These questions linger in the minds of subscribers and especially Turkish cinema industry and citizens as they navigate through the streaming service's catalog. The identity and criteria of the individual or team (?) behind the selection process should be announced.

Finally I can say that despite its efforts, "Kül" fails to evoke any genuine emotion from its audience. Unfortunately this film manages to miss the mark at every turn. In the end, "Kül" is a forgettable exercise in mediocrity that does a disservice to cinema.

What's
Likethinkanna9 March 2024
Max Turkish romance. I couldn't stand it for 10 minutes. Simple acting of the characters. In which category do they write the scenario?. I am writing empty details for me to complete the text. Turkish players can never go one step further. Alperen is an unnecessary player. I criticize impartially.

The movie about the relationship between a wild man and an unhappy woman

Although it is creative to associate this with a book, the processing is so ordinary,

It's not even monitored with the phone in hand, that's it.

1/10 movie. It can be watched as one of the last 1-2 things to do in life.

Thanks.

How are the actors okay with this quality?
vgfxkzvv11 March 2024
The movie characters are just copies of countless cliches, acting is bland and the scenario feels like an attempt of a romantic movie by a generative AI. The cheating wife has been overused, the life they show you is not realistic.

There is no character development other than sprinkling some cliches on each character. The wife owns a cute shop, the other man is a mysterious, poor but trustworthy person.

If I was an actor I would be ashamed to be part of something like this. I would stop writing if I was the writer behind this. I would stop directing movies if I was the director who filmed this.

The only good thing was the cinematography.
mayssach7 April 2024
It's like the writer didn't know how to make the main actress cheat on her husband so he made up the whole book thing.

Story line is messed up, we didn't get answers to many questions.

Big actors but pale acting, exaggerated sex scenes.

The only good thing was the cinematography.

Don't know what else to say so I'm going to copy the above.

Complex psychological thriller
chwechter21 February 2024
Not sure why all the bad reviews. I definitely enjoyed this film, a welcome departure from the usual Turkish traditional dizis which I also love for different kinds of viewing pleasure.

So happy to see Alperin back in anything. Been missing him and his gifts as an actor. Funda Eryigit is also excellent as she was when these two acted together in Son Yaz(a great binge). The husband Mehmet Gunsar Is also great but I am unfamiliar with him up until this film.

Ashes presents a very passionate, deeply psychological, sophisticated and complicated plot with lots of interesting twists and turns and in the end, much is left up to the individual viewer's interpretation. Still thinking about it and trying to understand what it all meant- in a good way.

Interesting story / terrible end / felt too much concern to have another follow-up movie to Netflix(please stop doing this)
kalenderburak23 April 2024
End of the movie is not good at all! It felt to me that we want to make another movie to Netflix, that's why we are leaving so many open areas at the end.

This movie can be ended much better if there is no concern about "Ashes 2"!

If the end of the movie doesn't have any concern about Ashes 2, average rating for this movie could be around between 7-8 instead what it has 4.3 right now.

As a watcher, when I see a movie that is invested into a follow-up second movie, it immediately irritates me. Unfortunately, I felt this way in Ashes.

It has to be understood that if a movie is good, movie watchers request a continuation movie. My message is for producers/scenarists/writers.
