Walton Goggins
estathena212 April 2024
It takes one hell of an actor to slowly seduce the viewer - especially as a ghoul whose suffered the effects of extreme exposure to nuclear materials.

Goggins embodies the antihero with such charm, charisma, & apt sarcasm that one cannot help but wonder, is there anything Walton cannot do?

His southern way - the drawl, parlance, swagger seduces the viewer so slowly that you're feeling empathy for a ghoul before you even realize it.

This dystopian series serves as a warning to us forgetful apes utilizing wit, humor, music, and subtle acting talent that draws the viewer in slowly & holds them still.

A masterful work that uses all of its tools - set, lighting, & soundtrack to transport as transcend.

I'm hooked & happy to hold still to see where the story takes me.

"There's what people said they did and what they did."

Warning: Spoilers
What a rollercoaster ride! The game continues. As we move along into this new episode, Lucy gets a little closer to understanding that there is a different element at play, in its entirety: The Ghouls (also the name of this episode). We learn a bit more about what this element is all about, from Lucy's perspective and also from Norm's finding at the Vault. When he stumbles upon he and Lucy's mother involvement, it is a much different fight that he could have ever envisioned before.

The Ghoul, in desperate needs of drugs, brings them both to a facility that he buys vials from, where Lucy's naïveté almost costs her her life on more than one occasion. After helping him, she is back on her solo journey to find the head and take it to Maldaver.

A lot has happened in this episode. There's a lot of trading going on, a lot of negotiating and ultimately it lands Lucy back with a likely teammate.

Still Enjoying It

Another great episode in what is quickly becoming one of my favorite series. I'm enjoying it more having looked up the general premise behind Fallout and the vault system. Basically, with the exception of a few control group vaults, each one is a different social experiment gone awry which ends up making them each like a themed zone.

There were two main plots being pursued this episode: the A plot following Lucy and the Ghoul, and the B plot following the brother. Maximus was non-existent.

The A plot story wasn't really advanced any, more of a side quest. However we did get to see Lucy's character develop quite a bit. They've done the most work on her her so far, seconded by the Ghoul, which maybe why I enjoyed what is otherwise a detour episode. The B plot took some major strides towards discovering what nefarious intentions propel the experiments conducted on Vaults 31, 32 & 33.

Of the four episodes so far, 'The Ghouls' is probably my second or third favorite. It's not as funny or as action-packed as the others, but there's a lot developed in terms of character and world.

Best Episode So Far

I absolutely loved this one. Although it was missing the third main character Maximus, I felt like pushing forward the dynamic between Lucy and The Ghoul was really well done. This episode probably had the most references to the video game series and had some of the best world building for people who haven't tried the games. It also developed Norm into a character with courage and probably got me the most interested in the vault side story since the actual pilot. It did a great job of explaining some of the unanswered questions like why The Ghoul desperately needs vials. I really like Lucy after what she did for him even after how awful he's treated her throughout the show. 4.5/5 stars.
