21st Century Dallas in disguise
doug2go28 October 2022
This could easily be a 21st century spin off from Dallas - an action shoot im up version clone of Texas Ranger Cordell Walker - it is not - this is a 21st century spin off of a socially correct Dallas melodrama I have tried to stop watching for some time - I have graded some shows as low as a 2 - recently but the show runner to his credit brings me back with shows like this - where there is an actual crime to solve , the chemistry between Walker and his Partner is obvious and could easily go beyond professionalism if the show runner has any sense I will continue to watch this show because I never know whether the show runner is going to waste my time with melodramatic family nonsense or provide a show like this.

Good Case of the Week & Continuing Seasonal Arc
Sarah42330 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This week Trey (Jeff Pierre) gets his hat as a Ranger after having the most circuitous career path of any supporting actor I've seen in a show. From boyfriend/support system to Micki, to a coach & counsellor type at the local school, to a Ranger--which actually fits because his backstory was as a vet like Cordell.

The case he gets is a horse theft and there is some discussion of groups trying to steal and set free wild ponies. (Again, we get the question of being part of the system upholding laws, but balancing doing the right thing.)

Trey handles the job well, but only after getting razzed a bit by Cordell (Jared Padalecki) and James (Coby Bell) who had an awful time with the same FBI guy back in the day.

Cassie (Ashley Reyes) joins in and it was fun to see the light-hearted ribbing they all gave the guy.

We also got to see them having Cordell's back as far as watching for signs of PTSD. Larry in particular, and that dynamic is heart-warming.

Also heart warming was seeing Cordi bring back the ponies, hoping to help his brother get through the same ptsd.

Only, of course, everyone's trauma is different and Liam (Keegan Allen) seems to be overcoming his rather quickly.

---

Besides the shout outs to the actors above, also kudos to the writers and editors who kept this hour balanced/realistic/moving along.

This show gets pre-empted a lot since it's on Thursday (a sports night.) I tracked it down, because the creatives behind it do such a good job.

Fun yet nuanced writing
romakashyap-1237828 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The episode was focused on Trey's foray into being a Ranger and it certainly brought in the much needed comic relief versus the first three episodes. One of the most poignant scenes was Cordell's inability to speak to Coop's Mom and how Jared dealt with it. The precise moment where he makes the decision to not meet her and just leave is so real and perhaps one of the best pieces of writing ever. It happens to all of us where we want to speak to someone about something but are just not able to. I guess that's one of the reasons why people go to therapy. The rest of the cast was great as well especially Bonham as the dad and his different dynamic with both his son's.
